KOKIA in flashback - 2002

KOKIA starts off the year of 2002 with her second full album, trip trip. This album opens with the song Chouwa ('harmony'), of which especially the later version from 2006 will end up becoming one of her most well-known and requested songs even today. It is the first song to use KOKIA-go, or KOKIA language, in this case by reversing the syllables of the lyrics. The album also features the song Pinku no zou ('pink elephant'), with the elephant (specifically of the pink variety) continuing to pop up in her logos and merchandise in the years to come.

The album also sees a China mainland release with a KOKIA comment and bonus track, CURRENT, which is used in a commercial for Suntory Oolong tea in Shanghai in April this year.

KOKIA travels even further overseas thanks to a Subaru car commercial in Europe, featuring the song a gift from this album.

Her first full solo concert, that's why I was born, is also in 2002, and parts of it later feature in her 10th anniversary memorial book with DVD. Aside from her previously released songs, she performs the songs Douke ('clownery') and U-cha-cha there, songs that won't be released on CD for quite some years to come.

They went so hard and this song itself really shows off each member's creative strengths with singing and rapping. I'm so sad I never got to see them live during their short run. I had a lot of fun with this one. Yunomi wrote this for the group. He's a talented lyricist and I'm excited to do more of his CY8ER songs. I already translated Renai Reality Shou but that was a collab with Yasutaka Nakata so I was already familiar with his writing style. Translation notes: •ハリボテのショー (haribote no SHOO) lit. "papier mache show". Haribote is used to mean something that's fake or only looks good on the surface. I chose to translate it as "paper doll show." •金輪際 (konrinzai) lit. "on the edge of the golden ring" referring to the Buddhist concept of the deepest core of Earth, which some believe we may return to upon death. This word is often used to mean "until Doomsday" or "until the end", as in "never". I translated it as "til I die." •もういいかい？(mou ii kai?) lit. "already good?" Like most people, when listening to this song I thought the lyric was もう一回 (mou ikkai) meaning "one more time" but when I looked at the lyric I realized it was something else. It's usually used like, "you good?" or "you ready?"

KOKIA blog update: September 6, 2023

Admin note: As mentioned before, translating full entries takes a while these days, so I have opted to quickly summarize KOKIA's recent blog entry. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

KOKIA updated her official blog on September 6 now that both her summer concerts (at Billboard Live Yokohama and Suntory Blue Rose in Tokyo) are over. She feels that these concerts were something special.

The update is a little after the fact, as KOKIA moved from London back to Japan in August, and summer holidays for both her and her son Leo are over now that it's September.

September is however also the release month for her new album, The Lighthouse, her 25th anniversary best of album. It's for sale at her KOKIA Jirushi web shop. She compares it to one of her very first albums, trip trip, as she feels it's a little similar in terms of variety of songs, mentioning the multi-layered Chouwa ('Harmony') and the fun of Pinku no zou ('Pink elephant').

Finally, she also sent out a mail to members of the fan club, club ancoro. It is also up on the MEMBERS page for those who missed the mail.

KOKIA YouTube livestream [2020.05.16]

KOKIA has wrapped up yet another livestream, with today’s 1 to 1 Live for you stream called ‘animal musical’. And an animal themed show it was indeed! Running longer than the average stream, KOKIA went through a lot of her animal songs from her tontonton project and even introduced some new tracks. In case you missed it, I have included a tracklist and a report below with a couple of more screenshots.

After sound checking, KOKIA disappears off-screen for a bit to ‘transform’: upon return, she is wearing an owl hoodie and launches into an introduction song to welcome us to today’s performance. Of course, the first song proper is Fukorou, ‘owl’. 

After shedding the hoodie, KOKIA returns to introduce a new song: Meerkat, fitting the animal theme and today’s theme as well, with the lyrics going ‘Stay home’. Other savanna animals follow with the giraffe (she still has the finger puppet) and the lion, who seems scary but just wants to be friends. She has a hoodie for him, too! 

Another transformation later, KOKIA reappears in a light kimono to introduce the next song: Tanuki, about the raccoon dog. They’re real animals, but also a popular creature in Japanese folklore in which it often fights with the fox, or kitsune, and the song is about a sumo fight between the two of them in a shrine garden. KOKIA is an enthusiastic referee and pianist Seta seems to join the cheers in the chorus!

After a slight technical hitch, KOKIA returns with a song about an elephant: Pinku no zou, ‘pink elephant’, which doesn’t actually feature on the tontonton albums, even though the second album has an elephant song… (This particular arrangement of Pinku no zou can also be heard on the ALIVE album by the way, as it’s pretty different from the first album version.)

Now that she’s back in her normal clothes, we can see the t-shirt she’s wearing underneath, and she indeed shows of her 1 to 1 Live for you shirt in different colors. You can get one yourself to show your support at the official webshop!

Next up is a beautiful and all new song which is technically still animal themed: Hito, meaning ‘human’. Followed by a touching rendition of the song Kujira, ‘Whale’, KOKIA then ends the livestream with a ‘Please, stay home and stay safe! I love you, everyone.’

Just kidding - the piano picks up in a much quicker tempo now, and KOKIA hops back into screen having transformed one more time as she gives her chicken themed encore!

A very happy 22nd anniversary to KOKIA!

April 29, 2020 marks 22 years since KOKIA made her official debut as a singer. Although I’m sure we had all pictured this year a little differently to say the least, KOKIA has been going strong with her YouTube livestreams to continue sharing her music with us all, and will in fact welcome us all on her YouTube channel again this Saturday.

KOKIA, thank you so very much for sharing your music and magic with the world, and may there be many more years to come!

As a side note, I had planned to upload translations to KOKIA’s second animal themed album today, but since she revealed yesterday she’ll be singing songs from the animal albums on Saturday, I will wait for those in case she translates her titles very differently from my drafts ;) (I already had to modify my pre-existing translations a little, ssh.)

KOKIA live best album ‘ALIVE -The live history-’ Release: April 29, 2019

To mark the end of her 20th anniversary year, KOKIA will release a live best of album called ‘ALIVE -The live history-’ on April 29! Below follows the detailed track list.
