A Beautiful Day.
Demi’s back! But she hasn’t heard from Trona in awhile...
“Oof! Huh, that didn’t take too long. Thanks for the ride mister!”
A small but boisterous female voice expressed its gratitude to a burly man steering a stationary horse-drawn wagon. He gave a tip of his sun hat with a hand holding two gold coins in his large palm before spurring the horses back into motion.
As the wagon pulled away there appeared a waving small figure. A short, female Halfling with tan skin, chestnut hair and a wardrobe of browns, yellows and greens. She kicked up one heel, turning around on the other before stamping it on the ground and placing her fists on her hips with a haughty ‘Hmph!’ through a tight smile.
She was back in Waterdeep!
Finally she got to get back to adventuring. Finally she could tie her hair back up again. Her parents probably wouldn’t like it, but who cares? She did! Almost made her feel older, and maybe... Just a little taller.
But either way it was going back up because she was back! And she had adult responsibilities again.
And she wouldn’t have to wait long as a heavy, gruff voice called across the street from the other side of the gate. “DEH-MEH!”
It was more yell than voice, but she knew exactly who it belonged to. Turning around she immediately spotted a rag-tag group of individuals with the fuzzy culprit towering over the others.
A bugbear was waving his heavy palm.
In front of him stood an armored knight carrying a flail with a kite-shield and patterns of green painted over his armor and standard. He rolled his shoulder to adjust one of his pauldrons when he looked up and caught eye of his party mate.
By his shin a male halfling with grey clothes and a disinterested look, impatiently clicking a very expensive looking pen. When he looked up an almost mischievous smile spread onto his face.
Behind the bugbear on an already commandeered and loaded cart sat a beautiful elvish woman with silver hair kicking her feet back and forth in the air.A sight that might’ve been a little less unsettling if not for the spire she had on the back of her hand she was staring at with a casual smile.
Demi excitedly waved as she ran a few feet in their direction before taking a few rapid looks around. Immediately she was aware of one silhouette missing. There was no long beak of a plague doctor mask sticking out anywhere.
The halfling cupped her hands around her mouth before leaning forward a bit to try and carry her voice to the others, “Have you guys seen Trona yet!?”
“Not anywhere, was supposed to meet us an hour ago! Much longer we’re gonna be late!” Ferrum, the knight, called back.
“I said we should just leave her!” Haelgrukk, the bugbear rumbled like thunder across the clearing, clearly displeased.
Garster, the sketchy looking halfling just raised his hands in a shrug along with a few rapid shakes of his head while Val, the elvish woman, was still clearly preoccupied with her spider.
“Hrm...” Demi whined, slightly in pondering but mostly in disappointment it was gonna be longer before they could leave.
“Have you checked her shop yet!?” Ferrum called again, earning equally surprised stares from all sides of his party.
“She has a shop now!?” Demi called back.
“Why didn’t you tell us that!?” Garster demanded, kicking his armored shin with about as much success as one would expect.
... Because it wasn’t relevant until now?” Ferrum answered, not doing very well to appease the frustrated stares, “Hey I was getting the cart!”
Demi rubbed a hand over her face with a heavy sigh, turning on her heel again as she took off down the street, “I’ll go find her, just gimme a minute!”
“Two blocks down, you can’t miss it! Looks exactly like what you think it does!” Ferrum called back before the distant sound of metal clanking together. Hale likely lost his patience and got mitts hands on him. It was a small wave of relief Demi didn’t have to see, or really hear, any of what was coming next.
Before long she found a building that stood out to her from the others just by the newer, fresher wood and stone to build the structure. She didn’t know much about architecture, but she could always tell when forest material was fresh.
It was a rounded building with windows embedded into stone piling that gave way to long stretches of wood. Behind the glass she saw hanging, drying herbs and the glint of a few colorful potions in the reflecting sun rays.
She could definitely smell it was her place, if anything. The combination of burning chemicals and fragrant herbs was an odor no one ever agreed on if they loved it or hated it.
But that didn’t make her hesitate to push the door open with a high jingle of a welcome bell.
Before she almost choked on a wave of dust.
The halfling stumbled into the room with a few light coughs, waving her hands in her face as she was startled by just how thick the air was. The sunshine and twinge of the salty air from the Sea of Swords gave way to a pungent odor of something like lavender crossed with sulfur.
When Demi wiped her eyes she got her first look at the shop. Shelves and notes lining the walls around a desk on the far side of the room. A bed nestled under a window to her left and a staircase cascading over a small kitchen up to a loft.
A figure turned around with a start at the desk across the room. A head whipping around with the flourish of a very long, white ponytail. Looking back at her were foggy, baggy eyes of a pale-complexioned woman. It was almost impossible to make out the alchemist against the curtain of smoke that immediately dissipated as she took a couple steps to turn fully around.
“Demi? You’re back already?” She asked in a faintly accented voice.
Demi coughed, giving her chest a couple pats as she stood up to full height again, “Yeah! *Cough* It’s me, Trona! Didn’t think I’d be back so soon, either, but couldn’t be happier I am. Eugh, it’s hard to breathe in here. What are you making, some kind of new poison for Garster?”
Trona blinked, sheepishly looking at a mug and saucer in her hands then back up at the ranger again.
“Tea.”
“Tea-!?” Demi started to question, shaking her head in dismissal of the topic, “Nevermind, we gotta get going! Everyone’s waiting for us!”
“Waiting for-” Trona had barely enough time to set down her tea and flip up her hood before Demi scampered forward and took one of her hands.
“Yeah! Waiting! The party got us a job for us,” She explained as she pulled Trona along towards the door who leaned with almost both of her arms at full length reaching for her plague doctor mask and satchel off the bed, “So we gotta get going!”
Trona scrambled to adjust her mask as they burst out into the morning air. She almost lost her footing underneath her as the sun bore down on her. What she didn’t have time, or the courage, to tell Demi was she hadn’t left her shop in a couple of days. Her time sank into a black hole trying to synthesize a tea using nightshades with minimal success.
The aggressive light and almost thin air made her lose her breath for a second, but she kept jogging at the behest of the halfling pulling her along.
“I’m not waiting any longer for an adventure, we got things to do! Besides, it’s a beautiful day!” Demi exclaimed, clearly the excitement of returning starting to stoke her halfling spirit.
It made Trona look at her feet, watching as almost grey ground gave way to spills of color. Her eyes adjusted to see sprouting flowers in the cobblestone path. The complimentary shades of Demi’s wardrobe and the glow of her smile over her shoulder. Ringing in her ears giving way to melody as birds chirped, just returned from their first fly of the day. The smell of the billowing bread oven of the bakery just up the road with windows thrown open to circulate the breeze. Yes, even the colorful language spouting from Hale’s mouth at Ferrum as they got closer to the rendezvous point.
You’re right-” Trona breathed to herself, not quite audible to Demi,
“It is beautiful, isn’t it?”

“This is without a doubt the stupidest plan you’ve ever had. Of course I’m in.”
i hope u don’t mind that i did this for my Warrior Cats au dsalkfj aslkdfg
also uh.
i did three characters rather than two. oops…
prompt list. send me one ?
Rosepaw nods, listening intently to what Hawkpaw is saying. Nonsense, all of it, but it sounds fun. “This is without a doubt the stupidest plan you’ve ever had. Of course I’m in.”
“Keep your voice down,” Hawkpaw swats her head gently, not nearly as rough as he did the first time he told her that. “You’ll get us caught.”
“Caught doing what, exactly?”
Rosepaw sits down immediately, plastering what she hopes is an innocent look on her face and curling her tail around her paws. Beside her Hawkpaw groans softly.
“We weren’t going to do anything, Pinelight, promise!” Rosepaw purrs.
“Uh-huh, I’m sure you two are just innocently talking about what your mentors took you out to do earlier today and nothing else.”
Rosepaw nudges Hawkpaw, who stumbles into a response. “Yeah, right, that’s all we were doing.”
“Mhm, well, I’ll make sure your mentors know that you were doing nothing but gossiping and need to go clean out the elder’s den and search their fur for ticks.” Amusement tickles Rosepaw’s ears as Pinelight speaks, his gentle voice teasing but with a layer of seriousness underneath.
“Of course, Pinelight, we’ll do whatever needs to be done!” Even as she speaks, thinking about the smell of mouse bile makes her stomach churn.
He lets out a huff of laughter and walks away, his scent fading. Rosepaw waits a few moments for his steps to disappear into the ambient sounds of the camp before turning to Hawkpaw, her nose barely brushing his ear.
“Dirtplace at moonhigh, right?” she whispers, excitement already coursing through her.
“Yeah, I’ll make sure to smack you on the head on my way out of the den. And if you get us caught, I’ll make you tend to the elders until we’re both warriors.”
“Seems fair.” A purr rumbles in her throat, knowing that’s most likely what will happen and not caring. It’ll be fun no matter what happens.

So for the DnD Demi, her last name is Pinelight. Which I’m slowly growing to enjoy as a name. Since normal yordle Demi never got a last name, that may be what I go with, cause I really like how it sounds.

I’m DM-ing A Campaign!
That’s right I’m doing a small off-shoot campaign with the creators of Haelgrukk (@bm13), Demi Pinelight (@d00dle-arts), and Goisfrid ‘Ferrum’ Johannes (@ferrum-the-conqueror) from Trona’s party!
My character will be added to the ‘Other Characters’ tab if this campaign takes off as well as if it does well (and you guys wanna hear about it) I’ll post my full set of notes I’m using for it under it’s own tab as well as document the adventures the crew has.
You’ll probably see some pretty great art of this party over time as well which will be under the tags ‘My Campaign’ and ‘Follow The Star’. First session’s tomorrow, I’ll keep you updated on the progress of this project!

The Science of Guilt
Musing on Trona Quicksilver, my Dungeons and Dragons Alchemist.
End of Adventure 3 after returning from a tomb where she discovered two strange liquids.
Hale the Bugbear belongs to @bm13 and Demi Pinelight to @freljord-le respectively.
It was wrong, all of it was wrong.
But somehow so right.
Thoughts twisted and turned like the steady hands of the figure within the lab as she uncorked vials and opened cloth wraps of herbs with varying strong scents. The Alchemist’s hands moved swiftly, but so precisely as she worked. This was her home, her domain, where she belonged.
The lab was within a set of stone walls lined with crude notes and scribblings written on wax paper and any other parchment she could get her hands on. Hung askew across the room with just enough inkling of organization to instill controlled chaos.
Beakers and vials lined shelved across the walls with a table pushed against the wall to the right of the door and a desk directly across where the figure stood, paying no mind to the chair as she could not keep still enough to sit.
She was looking for something, frantic with her movements as she waved the openings of vials beneath the pointed beak of her Plague Doctor mask before promptly setting it back down swiftly, not bothering to recork them.
Two vials sat isolated on the table directly next to each other on top of two sheets of paper. One was a sickly green, almost yellow, liquid that sat still in it’s vial almost as if it were frozen. The other a deep black sludge, almost akin to tar, that weighed down the vial so heavily it creased the paper beneath it. The first sheet labeled the yellow liquid ‘Cauldron’ and the other ‘Pot’ to indicate in what vessels they were retrieved.
The Alchemist slammed her hands on the table, glass vials and clay pot lids clattering with the impact as her breath huffed in frustration. So many years of study, so many notes, tests, and failures and yet none of them yielded the knowledge she needed. All she could derive of the substances was they were of necrotic origin just like the barriers her group encountered in the tombs. Every bone in her body screamed at her that she was wrong. That her assumption that the concoction could be used to raise the dead was preposterous.
But it wasn’t. She saw that.
She saw the shambling corpses of the poor souls trapped in that tomb come to life and attack her party, nearly getting them killed. Her body ached with the fresh wounds still healing from the attack, but not as much as her mind ached wrapping her head around the impossible become just the opposite. It twisted something inside the Alchemist’s heart.
It was an abominable practice, and she wanted it.
Her name was Trona Quicksilver. At least, that was the name she gave herself. She didn’t tell people her real name, and barely showed her face unless she had to. It wasn’t a disguise, but rather a persona. One she took on many years ago, years that felt like they added up to a millennium. The grueling weeks she saw the Horseman of Pestilence ride into her home.
It came without warning, and struck without bias and without restraint. People all around her, people she called friends and family became deathly ill. The symptoms were brutal and agonizing. Bleeding eyes, fits of coughing, inflammation of almost every gland that she could name. And the worst part was none of the doctors in her village had ever seen anything like it and were powerless to stop it.
Hundreds died, and statistically when the virus finally found Trona she should have as well.
But it didn’t.
The sickness passed over her like a dark wave of despair as it strode passed her almost tauntingly and latched onto men, women, and children. But Trona didn’t feel lucky, she felt called out. Challenged. As if nature itself was daring her to come and stop it. And she would, by any means.
That day she shed her human persona and took up the mask and cloak of Trona Quicksilver, her hands seeking to return the harm Pestilence had done to her through healing and research.
She learned the lengths of her immunity, and what it didn’t reach she built a resistance to. Beneath the aching of her recent battle she felt the deeply embedded scars of burns and cuts from years of experimenting, pushing her body to it’s limits.
But with every sting, every ache, every agonizing night lying awake with bloodshot eyes studying her notes she knew she was saving lives. Before long, however, she started testing on others.
She’d put concoctions in potions and salves she created to study their reactions. Sometimes they boosted the effects, other times they had unwanted side-effects. But Trona paid attention, took notes, and then discarded regard of the reactions as nothing more than unwanted side-effects.
But now, in these two vials that stood before her, it was as if all of that was challenged again. But it was not nature this time, no, this was something else. An unholy power promising her something she could not deny her desire for: to raise the dead.
A second chance, for the times she failed. To breathe life back into the bodies of those she could not save. But at what cost?
The undead she witnessed in the tombs were not human, nor anything that could be treated. They pushed onward through even the most disabling of injuries inflicted by her party. Even so, they were tied to strange incantations by circles drawn onto the ground that were so easily destroyed. It wasn’t enough, and magic was a dangerous place Trona never dared tread.
Not until now.
She could feel the arcane power held within the vials on her desk and it beckoned to her like a friend she needed for so long but never found until she ventures into those cobweb laden halls that reeked of her enemy. Of death.
Trona’s attention snapped from the maze of her mind she wandered through with walls made of information to find the sensation of the cold floors and wall against her back. She was sitting against the wall on the floor, her gaze fixated on the vials that had suddenly been moved without her realizing to her hands. The yellow vial was light, almost airy, while the black was heavy in her hand. It was like the scales of life and death tipped, and death was winning.
It twisted Trona’s heart as she felt grief creep into her heart and clash with her morals. Could she befriend death in order to fend it off? To bring back those she lost and be given a second chance?
The thoughts boomed in her head for what felt like years until a light knock at her door ripped her attention away, her head snapping to the wooden outcrop in the stone walls so fast she felt her neck stiffen.
“Trona?” A voice asked over a set of heavy. Female. It must have been Demi and the party Bugbear, Hale. The two were inseparable, Trona thought. “We’re gonna get going soon. Breakfast is almost ready downstairs.”
The words echoed in the Alchemist’s ears as she felt warmth creep into her flesh. The hard stone floor and wall suddenly turned to sturdy wood. Her desk was replaced by a cot and a dresser, the notes across the walls replaced with stained wooden walls.
She was back in the inn where her party met before adventures. The place they stayed and rested. It felt like she was in her lab just moments ago but the transition would have taken her at least a day to travel back. What made Trona sure of the transition was the panic of realizing the vials in her hands were gone. Scrambling for her bag she opened the leather flap to find them safely nestled into inner pockets.
With a sigh of relief she cleared her throat, attempting to sound akin to what her party was accustomed to.
“Yes yes, I’m coming. Give me just a moment!” She requested.
The Alchemist’s body still as she listened to the small patter of footsteps leave. Closing the bag flap, she felt her heart sink as she tucked the conundrum that haunted her away to be challenged again another day.
