If I had to label it, I'd call Billdip proship for sure. You really need to consider what often goes into the classic billdip dynamic; all the tropes and cliches that give it a particular flavor, as well as a "problematic" flare.

Your typical "Bill Takes Over the World and Dipper Makes a Deal That Saves His Family But Now He Belongs To Bill" fics, or the ones where Bill turns Dipper evil or just straight up possesses his body. Most of what Billdip is revolves around a power imbalance. If not, it's Bill being pushy and possessive. It's important to note that what's "problematic" varies between viewers, and while most Billdip shippers probably don't pay any mind to it, it's good to keep in mind that those who don't are going to process this relationship through the lense of canon. They don't see what we see. Explain what Billdip is to anyone out of the loop, and they imagine a 12 year old boy and a literal triangle.

The term "Proship" in of itself it pretty subjective. It really depends on where you draw the line, if at all. That being said, I've gotten pretty deep into things, and I'd say Billdip's one of those ships that doesn't have any particular Does or Don't, fandom-wise. Gore, sexual slavery, manipulation, age gaps, power imbalances. It's very prevalent in the Billdip community, and I'd go so far as to say it seldom pulls punches. Which I love.

I love the fics where Stan tries to keep his distance from the kids to avoid "succumbing to his bodily demands" and yet, the kids full-on encourage it. But boy, do I wanna see him constantly moving the goal posts as well.

10 Most Popular Gravity Falls Ships On AO3- An Analysis

This is literally. just a list with whether the ships are canon or not; whether they're objectively ethical, and my thoughts on them.

There are 24,854 tagged Gravity Falls fics out there; and the numbers below are based on those. This post is a long post... and contains mentions of incest and (what I consider) morally questionable relationships. This is because some of the top 10 ships consist of some of this. You've been warned. Oh, and there's The Book Of Bill spoilers here. Without further ado; lets begin.

1. Bill Cipher/Dipper Pines (BillDip) - 4539 tagged fics, 18.3% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: Sworn enemies. Dipper hates Bill from the moment that he sees Bill and only makes a deal with him out of desperation. Bill has also possessed Dipper; giving Dipper trauma. Ethics: Bill is revealed to be more than a million years old in the Book of Bill and Dipper is 13. That's... quite an age gap. My thoughts: Yea; I HATE this ship. I don't understand the popularity.

2. Mabel Pines/Pacifica Northwest (Mabcifica) - 1277 tagged fics, 5.1% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: Enemies to friends dynamic. Ethics: They're about same age, I don't have a problem with this. My Thoughts: It's cute! I can see why people ship this. I have a few hc's for it, but I definitely prefer Dipcifica

3. Dipper Pines/Pacifica Northwest (Dipcifica) - 1154 tagged fics, 4.6% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: Enemies to friends dynamic. Hinted at in the show, the Gravity Falls coloring book, and Journal 3 that Dipper has a crush on her... and that the two end up in a romantic relationship. Ethics: They're about same age, I don't have a problem with this. My Thoughts: It's cute! I definitely ship it. I see it as a slow-burn thing; and both help make the other better. Mabel would definitely help match-make them.

4. Ford Pines/Stan Pines (Stancest)- 949 tagged fics, 3.8% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: They're BROTHERS. Ethics: um... this is incest. My Thoughts: I.... why is this so popular this is ridiculous to me.

5. Bill Cipher/Ford Pines (BillFord)- 759 tagged fics, 3.1% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: Bill was Ford's "muse" and helped him build the portal. He later physically and mentally abused Ford. Ford spends years of his life chasing through the multiverse to defeat him; and later succeeds with the group in doing so in Weirdmageddon. However, The Book of Bill definitely has subtext for their early relationship that can be read as platonic or romantic. Ethics: They're both consenting adults- though one is a million years old dream demon. Very much abusive towards the end. My Thoughts: I wrote a whole essay on this!! Go check it out HERE. I ship them, but don't want to see shippy stuff *of* them unless its mostly angst. "Why do you ship this and not BillDip? It's still Bill.": Ford and Bill are adults, Dipper is a kid. There's subtext for this and not BillDip. Also Dipper started off hating Bill and the hatred only grew stronger; while Ford thought Bill was pretty cool at first.

6. Dipper Pines/Mabel Pines (Pinecest)- 727 tagged fics, 2.9% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: They're SIBLINGS. Ethics: uh... um... this is incest. My Thoughts: WHY ARE *BOTH* THE INCEST SHIPS MORE POPULAR THAN FIDDAUTHOR. is this because of that motherfucking taco bell story which we do not speak of?? WHY are incest ships EVEN ON the top 10 for a KIDS show. /rh

7. Fiddleford McGucket/Ford Pines (Fiddauthor)- 677 tagged fics, 2.7% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: Went to college together, shared a dorm. Fiddleford (FF) later abandoned his wife and kids to go help with Ford's project... and then got mad at Ford after he briefly fell into the portal. He later makes up with Ford. Roommates -> Lab partners -> Not talking -> Friends. Some of the canon material could be interpreted as romantic or platonic. Ethics: When FF and Ford were in college, they would be the same age. However, when he's working with Ford on the portal, FF would be married and thus cheating on his wife. My Thoughts: I LOVE this ship. My favorite Gravity Falls ship. Some ppl see it as one-sided but I don't. Might have to write sth longer abt why I ship it later. I believe they dated in college and as lab partners and FF is gay and was in a lavender marriage to hide his sexuality.

8. Wendy Corduroy/Dipper Pines (Wendip)- 660 tagged fics, 2.7% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: Dipper crushes on Wendy for a while. She politely turns him down, stating that she's too old and doesn't like him romantically. Ethics: Dipper's 12 and Wendy's 15. Generally seen as an uncomfortable age gap. My Thoughts: I don't ship this. Alex Hirsch did SUCH a lovely job of creating this unrequited crush and having Dipper slowly get over it when he's turned down. And he also does such a good job at portraying why the age difference is awkward when Dipper goes back in time and Young Wendy thinks he's cute. I'm fine with it if they're aged up... BUT I still don't ship it.

9. Ford/Reader- 482 tagged fics, 1.9% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: N/A Ethics: N/A My Thoughts: Didn't expect this to be on the top 10. I don't have an opinion on romantic reader-insert fics from shows tho.

10. Dipper Pines/Wirt [from Over the Garden Wall] (Pinescone) -374 tagged fics, 1.5% of all tagged Gravity Falls fics. Canon: This is from a different show- so not canon. Ethics: He's 14 and Dipper's 13; so around the same age. My Thoughts: I have not seen Over The Garden Wall (OTGW)- but the wiki makes him sound kinda similar to Dipper. Don't know enough about OTGW to say any more. -- Disclaimer: (Mandatory to avoid ppl getting mad at me) - These stats may be the tiniest bit off rn. They were taken August 16th at ~3:30AM, UTC. People constantly are uploading new stuff to ao3, so the numbers change. - I'm not saying anything abt the people who ship any of these- just the ships themselves. I want to avoid that kettle of fish so don't bring me into it. My mindset on that is "let ppl ship whatever they want because free speech. Which whilst I disagree strongly cause no?? Ones got direct implications in the game and one very much doesn't.

But also they're why I did finally get into Tcoaal entirely cause I realised that it is the exact vibe of the only pinecest content I used to really like. Two siblings go through traumatising experiences since childhood, get caught up with demonic rituals and end up being dependent and obsessed with eachother. Like that's always been the vibe of pinecest fics and aus I liked.

It was Friday night. Twin time was always scheduled for them to stay up as late as possible. It was always the best to look forward to. Especially after an awful week. Finals were coming up and Mable was definitely not feeling it. Though the mighty Dipster helped her of course. Tutored the crap outta her brain. Enough to make her feel prepped for the finals but she still wasn’t a hundreds percent. But none of that mattered. She just wanted to relax with her bro-bro and have a great night like always. The ‘rents told them yesterday they weren’t going to be home until Monday having a little getaway. This meant for a great playlist. As soon as she got home from school she started her playlist. Some of it was from her crush playlist she listened to when she needed to get some feels out with a lil help of music. It was just her process. But there were some solid hits on there she couldn’t pass up listening to. No matter the occasion. She checked her phone’s lock screen that illuminated the numbers 9:30 PM. Time to be the snack brigade. Even if that was a one Mabel job.

Mabel knew the usual menu for their night. Nachos in the huge bowl with as much cheese as the bowl can contain. The frosted cookies that have no real flour but tasted good enough to eat ten of them in one sitting. Pitt soda they always have stacked in the mini fridge in the garage she had to haul into the living room on the floor. A few candy bags they already picked out from the store a few days before. Gummy koalas they had a least three packages. Maybe if she was in the willing mood she’d share half a bag with him. She laid it all down on the coffee table as she grabbed the remote for the tv. Changing the input for their old wii. They haven’t played in ages but golly was it fun to play when they were younger. She heard Dipper talk a few weeks ago about how he never beat her at bowling. Claiming that she knew a wii bowling cheat somehow all these years. She wouldn’t break his heart admitting to the truth he just sucked at the release button. She giggled at herself as she connected the wires into the back of the tv. A click from the front door to her brother coming home on time as always. He smirks, “Wow Mable you’ve outdone yourself yet again.” He glances at the food displayed then turning to the tv. “Awe man you better not play bowling all night.” He throws his bag to the floor while slipping off his shoes shoving them to the side. He grabs a controller with a determined look. “Listen bro if you can’t take heat get outta the kitchen.” She points a finger towards their actual kitchen with the controller wrapped in the rest of her fingers. Dipper can’t help himself, “Oh take some of your own advice hot pants.” She grins stretching to get herself limber. They already pick bowling and smirk determinedly at one another.

An hour has already passed. “Ugh god Mabel teach me. This has to be rigged it’s impossible to win without cheating.” She laughs with her stomach shaking, “Listen dear brother-o-mine. You just suck at wii bowling and must accept fate that I queen of wii bowling thy Mabel is superior than thy loser Dipper.” He huffs on her direction but she’s already moved on to putting on some sweet jams. She grabs a small speaker shaped like a panda with his ears and stomach where the speaker booms out whatever she plays. Tapping the screen of her phone as music starts off with an icon beat recognized soon as it plays. “Oh my glob. C’mon this is so good you gotta come dance with the dancin’ queen.” He grins upward at her from sitting against the couch on the floor. “The queen at dancing too, gosh I just can’t win can I?” She chuckles, “Not a chance dippy-drop.” She’s inching her hand out to pull him. They inch towards the part where the kitchen meets the living room. Enough room for them to move around in. She sets Dipper to one side of the room and goes back to the other. She starts to stretch her legs out striding very slowly. Getting closer and closer to him as she makes a sultry face. She mouths, “Oh I wanna dance with somebody, I wanna feel the heat with somebody.” He can’t help but play along and mouth along as well throwing his head back waiting for her to get closer to him. She’s now shimming to the beat still badly lip sinking as expressive as possible. As soon as their faces meet he catches her off guard.

He laces her fingers with his in one quick motion before she can register it. He swings her round having her back go onto his chest. Another quick turn around and she’s face to face with him. Whew, where the heck did these moves come from. He then pushes her out with his arm still laced in her’s now with her grip tight as well. She notices his temples starting to bead sweat but he doesn’t show any sign of stopping. He gives himself enough room and leans Mabel far back. His grip is tight enough on her lower back and strong enough of a stance she is secure in his grip. She instinctively wraps her arms around his neck. They just glance into one another’s eyes. Dipper’s face turns bright crimson with his sweat on his forehead becomes prominent. He swallows hard before bringing his sister back up to a standing positon. He rubs hard on the back of his neck while trying to hide his face into his hat. “I uh gotta run to the um bathroom I’ll be back in a sec.” Mabel airily replies,”Okay.”

She sits on the couch almost still like. She can’t put her finger on why he’s acting like that or what just happened. We we’re just dancing right? Sure he was putting down some moves that could swoon and sweep someone right off their feet. But this is the Dipster. The awkward gawker walker. He was probably just trying to practice. But why did he get embarrassed ? He’s got not-a-thang to be ashamed of. Swear to it if some guy did that to we’d be in smooch town about now. Oh wait- shush Mabel not now. Any gal would be lucky to have broshep. He is the the hot trot boy around town. He has all that manly scruff and gosh the hair he has IS EVERYWHERE now but it’s not unattractive its a nice look. She stops herself from thinking further. The too much complimenting on her twin brothers appearance was enough to make her blink twice. She noticed it but never did she say to herself what she thought about it. Now the possibility of it being considered attractive felt like crossing a boundary that was kinda never crossed. She didn’t want to. It has an odd feeling about it. But the longer she was left alone the more it took hold of her thoughts. He was really putting the work in. God that dip was dipping fantastic. The way he held her she never felt before. That grip. She bit her lip replaying the feeling and move he did over and over. It was tight hold but lingering just in the right place to make her limp. She never had that happen from any of her little flings. This was new territory for her. For some reason her brother was giving her this almost new yet a familiar feeling at the same time. She hated to acknowledge any of this. Nope no way shush you are just too caught up in the dancin moves and the music that is all ya lil silly brain. She was almost taunting herself. If that was the case then why are you gripping the couch to keep not from floating away. Why are you freaked out if nothing happened? Why can’t you drop this?

She hears her brothers feet walk down the stairs. “H-hey Mabes. Sorry about that uh thing I just got a little carried away.” She looks at him. He is twiddling his thumbs back n forth waiting for her to reply breaking the silence. She can see his face is still beat red. All she can mange is a soft, “No worries. It was nice. Very uh sweet.” She’s never had an issue talking to her brother. Why is she stumbling on her words now. “Whew I’m a lil winded from all that…stuff so imma head to bed.” He shows a worried brow but it turns to him nodding slowly picking up the food. He swoosh’s her hand away. “It’s alright Mabes you look a lil tired go ahead I’ll take care of it.” She makes a shrug, “Thanks bro-bro.” She grabs her phone and speaker that still plays as she quietly closes her bedroom door. Her fluorescent lights in her room are twinkling hues of pinks and purples. She sets her phone and speaker to the end of her bed as she sits there quietly. She can’t help but stare at the floor where her knee high socks in blue and orange neon colors of gummy worm design are bouncing bursting of color against the beige shaggy carpet. She bites her lip again. She can hear a same tune of a song she listens too fondly when she’s having a crush. Her one finger starts to pick at her thumb’s skin. She starts to hear out of her speaker, “Just a sweet sweet fantasy babyyyy.” Her imagination takes her mind for a ride as she replays Dipper dipping her down to then him leaning in for a kiss. She stares at the wall in shock. This can’t be happening. She begs her mind to stop but she keeps seeing him kissing her. Her body can only will her to stare at the wall that is bare. She is left terrified of herself.

It’s that admiration, respect, idolisation, and damn near worship Dipper holds for Ford. Their bond is so much deeper and stronger for it. And that admiration and idolisation could very very easily be manipulated by Ford, if he so pleased.

I recently came across an online version of the official Gravity Falls comic, "Lost Legends", if I remember correctly.

Spoilers!

In the story about Mabel's journey through dimensions, our candy girl, at the end, gives her brother a blue book with a spruce symbol, that is, his new diary. And she received such a treasure from Mablipper, Mabel from that dimension where she behaves like a twin brother. So, I had an idea for a fic in which there is a dialogue between Mablipper and the original Mabel, just before the ending of the story. They communicate, discuss how each girl has her own Dipper in her universe, and how much he means to each of them. Then, an answer is given as to why Mablipper, behaves like this. It turns out that the teenager lost her brother as a result of the opening of an interdimensional portal, you know what, which sucked him into itself, throwing him into an unknown dimension. From this, the sweater-loving girl first became severely depressed, then began to act like Dipper, finding comfort in the memory of his nerdiness, and then, with the help of Uncle Ford, she escaped through the portal to find her brother. She ends the story by saying that she only found his singed cap, and realizing that she needs to move on from the guilt, she gives her own gift to her new friend’s non-surviving brother, hoping that at least her Dipper will live a long and happy life.

i’m really hoping the book of bill inspired fandom revival for gravity falls will lead to a pinecest revival, i wasn’t really into the show actively during its heyday but i have seen it since and i am so obsessed with the pine twins and there isn’t enough content, especially fic

I'm surprised to hear you say there's not enough content, it seemed so popular back in the day. But maybe that was just relative to other incest ships.

I think it's great this fandom is getting new content, and if Alex Hirsch is still interested in the characters, then maybe a revival is possible. Disney is definitely in a "bring back popular stuff" mode.

I am so unbeliavably obsessed with Blightcest it's embarrasing. Nearly every day I check the AO3 tag for Edric Blight/Emira Blight to see if there's a new fic but almost always it's a no. I saw a bit of a rise in Blightcest content after toh ended, but it didn't last long. I would write a fic and make art but I'm currently under a bit of a depressive episode that makes doing so difficult, so for now all I can do is wait... I really wish this ship had taken off as much as Pinecest did in the Gravity Falls fandom back in the day
