Mike: This pineapple was growing on a plantation on Lanai yesterday.
Harvey: Do not trust it.
Mike: Don't trust the pineapple?
Harvey: Hardman.
Mike: Would you--come on.
Harvey: I don't want it.
Mike: Are you serious? You're afraid of the pineapple? I know it's got a rough exterior, but it's all sweet on the inside, I promise. "Come on. I love you, Harvey." It'll be good for you. Mmm. See?
Harvey: It's spectacular, but that doesn't change the fact that this is what he does. He's coming back, and people are going to have to choose sides.
Mike: Can I choose his side?
Harvey: Sure. Support a man you never met over a partner who knows you never went to Harvard, knows you're not really a lawyer and is keeping you on anyway.
Mike: Jessica, it is. Ready to serve.

As of 2012, Lanai was 98% owned by Larry Ellison, co-founder and chairman of Oracle Corporation;[7] the remaining 2% is owned by the state of Hawaii or is privately owned homes.[8][9]
it has a population of 3000!
from the wikipedia article of its only town Lanai City (right in the middle of the island)
Lāna‘i was once the home of the pineapple plantation of entrepreneur James Drummond Dole, which spanned over 20,000 acres (81 km2) and employed thousands of workers. Dole owned the entire island for a time, and in the 1920s built Lāna‘i City to house and serve the community of workers.[7]
it was transferred directly from a spinoff of the dole company to ellison. it has two hotels (owned by ellison). one of them has 200 rooms and 5 restauraunts (?!), the other has 100 rooms. so thats like, 600 tourists on an island of 3000

So sad to hear about Lahaina! I've never been but I just wrote a whole chapter of my book about it and feel like I know the place. My great-grandfather, Dick Cuthbert, spent three weeks there on maneuvers in 1925. The old pier where he landed was later destroyed by Hurricane Iniki (and is now one of the best diving spots in Hawaii) but otherwise it looks the same or, sadly, did.
In case anyone is interested, here's some Lahaina history I learned during my research.
Lahaina Roads, the calm water basin sheltered by the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai is the best natural anchorage in the Central Pacific. During the 19th century it was Hawaii's royal capital as well as the preferred rendezvous of the Pacific whaling industry.
Above is a picture of Front Street, 1925, Lahaina's main drag. Until yesterday Front Street was conspicuous for its plantation-style houses and commercial buildings from the 19th century. Back then whalers (including Herman Melville) kept the bars and brothels in business but ran afoul of the local missionaries. The culture clash grew so bad the whaling fleet actually shelled the town after a bloody bar fight.
By 1925 the industry had long since died out and the capital was in Honolulu. Most of the time it was a sleepy town of 2,000 surrounded by sugar plantations. Occasionally, though, it got invaded by men in uniform.
After US takeover, Lahaina Roads became the navy's official advanced base of operations in the Pacific (Pearl Harbor was still too small and shallow).
There were 45,000 men with the fleet that year. To keep from overwhelming the place, the navy only allowed a few thousand ashore at any one time. Dick ate a whole pineapple every time it was his turn to go. He also took in the intra-fleet baseball championships, held on the town's brand new ballfields. For 50 cents admission, the men could visit the hula tents. Dick griped in his journal about the price but admitted it was worth it.
After three weeks, the fleet left Lahaina, embarking soon after on a transpacific cruise to Samoa, Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti. Though Dick never saw Hawaii again, I'm sure he'd be sorry to hear that this charming historic town on the edge of paradise, where he spent a few breezy weeks of his youth, has been reduced to ashes.

5 Things to Do in Hawaii that No One Else Thought of
5 Things to Do in Hawaii that No One Else Thought of Go to the beach, drink a cocktail, and get a flower lei – doesn’t it sound boring? Luckily, there are plenty of things to do in Hawaii that you won’t see in every other photo or video from a Hawaiian vacation. Manele Bay Molokini is a popular(and overcrowded) snorkeling spot on Maui. Do something different. Take a short ferry ride from Maui to Lanai and hike ½ mile from the ferry landing to magnificent Manele Bay, where you can swim with wild spinner dolphins. Head to the Bay for the day and enjoy the relative solitude and immerse yourself in the warm, clear blue waters of the mid-Pacific. On a good day, you can see for more than 100 feet in any direction. Pods of playing spinner dolphins jump, spin, and splash in the relatively shallow waters just offshore. The water is pristine and conditions are some of the best on the planet for snorkeling. Just make sure you wear ocean-safe sunscreen. The sun can really cook you, but the chemicals in normal sunscreen burn the reef. Rainbow Eucalyptus Forest Maui’s road to Hana is famous for its waterfalls and one-lane bridges, but you don’t have to brave the traffic far to find a fanciful day trip. Take the winding Hana Highway past Paia, Haiku, and Twin Falls, and watch for giant trees with rainbow-colored trunks on your left. Yes, the coloring is natural. This is the only grove of rainbow eucalyptus left on Maui, and it’s protected from harvest and preserved for its beauty. Park alongside the road, but make sure you’re pulled off completely since the road is narrow and winding. Stroll through the roadside grove, then follow a small footpath back towards the ocean for spectacular photo ops. Bamboo Forest Hike Once you’re finished playing Alice in Wonderland amid the rainbow eucalyptus, cross the road and walk back in the direction you drove from. Look closely, and you’ll see a small break in the roadside bamboo thicket. Pass through the opening and choose your own adventure through a thick forest of tall bamboo. There are plenty of waterfalls and swimming holes in the river hidden within. Cross the river to get to the big waterfall. Hookuaka Sunrise at the crater is so popular you have to make reservations if you want to visit between 3 am and 7 am. It’s listed as one of the top ten sights to see in the world, but go a couple of hours before sunset and you could experience something even rarer – a glimpse of your soul. Park at the Leleiwi Overlook and walk the short trail down to the edge of the crater. If conditions are just right, you could see the Brocken Spectre – Hookuakain Hawaiian. It happens when the sun behind you casts a rainbow halo around your shadow in the clouds beneath your feet. Ancient Hawaiians believed this lucky sight was a manifestation of the soul. Continue up to the main parking lot and watch the sun sink into the clouds below, with a much smaller crowd than you’ll encounter at sunrise. Bring a hat and a warm jacket. It gets windy and cold when the sun goes down. Dinner and Drinks at Kula Lodge Toast to checking a couple more things off your bucket list with a glass of Maui champagne – sparkling pineapple wine – as you cozy up by the fire at the log-cabin-style Kula Lodge on Haleakala Highway. The lodge’s kitchen serves up a fantastic menu of locally sourced food until 9 pm, including pizzas from a wood-fired, outdoor brick oven. via Blogger https://ift.tt/et31UVl April 08, 2023 at 06:21PM

1804: George Sand (Histoires de Parfums)
The subjective nature of scent can override even the most detailed fragrance brief. Gérald Ghislain can explain to me six ways to a Sunday why 1804 is a portrait of George Sand. I will nod and smile and not budge one inch from my belief that it's really about Paul Gauguin. I'm not the only one to reach this conclusion, but as my father used to quip come household chore time, This ain't no democracy, honey.
I'm not sure why Ghislain would associate Sand with tropical fruit, but I concede that if I had to smell like fruit at all, tropical would be the way to go. In fact, all my memories of living on Maui seem to feature fruit-- bountiful and everpresent, in all the colours of a Fauvist rainbow.
In our little upcountry town, my housemates and I had only to step outside each morning to pick fresh bananitos (apple bananas) for breakfast. Going for a walk, I might freely pluck an avocado or a handful of lilikoi (passionfruit) from a curbside tree if I felt peckish. Staggering numbers of ripe clementines glowed like tiny orange lanterns in a neighbor's tree; he welcomed us all to invade his front yard and pick as much as we liked. Nature was generous-- why not he?
Generous, too, was the produce manager at the health food market where I worked. Island farmers arrived daily to bring him locally-grown organic fruits and vegetables, and each new shipment called for an impromptu taste-test. We sampled sweet pink "strawberry" papayas as well as the yellow-fleshed, bilious native variety. We nibbled slices of mellow cherimoya, carambolas (starfruit), and kiwi, and let guava and tamarillo juices run down our chins. I looked wistfully on as Jeff passed around cubes of fragrant fresh mango, to which I've always been severely allergic. As for lychees, I didn't know until I ate my first one that I'd have to chase it with six Benadryl in order to keep breathing. (Those few minutes before my throat closed over? So worth it.)
One of our vendors was an elderly Japanese couple who grew the most astonishing pineapples-- tiny, hand-sized honey grenades bursting with golden nectar. They sold us only one crate at a time, each flawless fruit carefully nestled its own bed of straw. One day I plucked up the courage to tell them - in the only Japanese I knew - that their pineapples were dai ichi (number one, the best). Faces creased with pleasure, they selected a single gemlike pineapple from their crate and presented it to me with a bow. Believe me, my bow was deeper still.
Though pineapples are not native to Hawai'i, they thrive in the rich loam of this volcanic archipelago. Each fruit is a self-contained chemical laboratory where acid (citric/malic), sugar (fructose/glucose), ester (ethyl butyrate) and enzyme (bromelain) create miraculous harmony. When subjected to heat (on a grill, or at the ground floor of an upside-down cake), the sugars in pineapple readily caramelize, breaking down all boundaries between tart and sweet and revealing the fruit's syrupy, liqueur-like attributes.
This melting quality figures large in 1804, a fragrance suffused with equatorial heat. Mitsouko subjected the simple peach to a flamebroil; 1804 ups the ante by adding pineapple and a shot of Charbay vanilla rum for a full-on, righteous flambé. If this sounds a bit de trop, be forewarned that it will segue into a dewy gardenia chord designed to hypnotize you into a state of hammock-swinging lassitude. This is not the perfume to wear when you've got a lengthy to-do list waiting. (If, however, your plans include a two-hour nap on a shady lanai....)
But all this leads me once again to question the logic of this perfume's name. No writer as mercurial and rigorous as George Sand would have endorsed so heavy-limbed a name brand-- and no one as enamored of male privilege would have wished to give the game away with so blatantly femme a scent. I imagine her instead roaming through the park at Nohant whilst wearing a stylish fougère, or a brisk West Indian bay rum appropriated from her estranged spouse...
On the other hand, Paul Gauguin -- grandson of Sand's frenemy, the feminist Flora Tristan -- filled canvas after canvas with worshipful images of the Polynesian feminine ideal. To him should go this soft, rounded, luscious perfume-- and to Sand, maybe a bottle of YSL Nuit de l'Homme?
Scent Elements: Pineapple, peach, gardenia, jasmine, lily-of-the-valley, cloves, sandalwood, patchouli, benzoin, vanilla, musk

“Happy Hour is great!! Food is delicious, had Brussel Sprouts, crab dip and Wagyu burger. Outside atmosphere and view is unbeatable.” Brad H., February 2023 “Gannon’s was recommended to us. And I’d say it was the best dining experience on our trip, hands down. Fantastic food, great drinks, attentive and friendly staff. And of course the beautiful setting. Definitely coming back.” Chris G., February 2023 “We had a large group that took some time to coordinate and Gannons was not only accommodating but flexible with us as the group increased in size. Everyone was kind and helpful from the first phone call to our last sip of wine as we departed, and you toss in great tasting food, generous portion sizes, a beautiful sunset and a place that welcomed kids, and you have achieved five stars! Thanks especially to Sidney and Cara for all of your help!” Bree L., February 2023 “Excellent sunset dinner with beautiful views of the ocean. This restaurant is located within Wailea Golf Club, which is a beautiful property overall. Friendly and attentive service from our server Cody throughout the evening along with the delicious food made for a nice memorable evening. Food quality and taste were good, as expected for a restaurant of this caliber – bbq pork ribs with slaw & pineapple salsa, Korean marinated strip loin with fried rice and cucumber pineapple salad, classic iceberg wedge salad. Nice Asian flavors fused into the steak and ribs. We enjoyed the dinner! Their famous coconut roulade dessert was ok- nice crumb on the cake and cream filling was good, but toasted coconut didn’t come through only plain coconut flavor. Great cocktail menu, very creative selections. Cocktails were excellent, strong, especially Mr.Tuttle and Strawberry Fizz.” Chris D., January 2023 “Gannons is an absolutely beautiful restaurant with incredible views! Perfect place to watch the sunset while you sip on Mai Tais and dine on Ahi Poke. Happy Hour options are awesome and a great price!” Amelia S., January 2023 “The concierge at our villas recommended Gannon’s for a family member’s special birthday dinner. We had delicious appetizers, main dishes, and special drinks to celebrate and enjoyed a fabulous sunset, too. Highly recommend Gannon’s.” Julie C., June 2021 Open daily, Gannon’s Restaurant is the perfect spot in Wailea for those looking for something unique and off-the-beaten-tourist-path. Things To Know About Living In West Maui
Things to know about living in West Maui
The Hawaiian monarch formerly vacationed on Maui's tropical northwest coast and served as the nation's capital. Today, West Maui is home to magnificent resorts, shops, restaurants, a wide range of activities, and some of the world's most breathtaking sunsets.
You may go from one sun-kissed resort to the next along the Honoapiilani Highway, each with its distinct character. The ancient whaling hamlet of Lhain is the first destination after leaving Maalaea and the Maui Ocean Center. While busy shops on Front Street and winter whale viewing make it a preferred port of call for cruise ship passengers, rustic structures commemorate its days as Hawai'i's biggest port.
On the Highway for a short while, you'll be attracted to the energetic Kaanapali Resort. A stroll along the Kaanapali Beach walk is always in order, regardless of whether you're staying nearby or are simply passing by. Families play on the beach, shoppers bustle in and out, while restaurants sit back and soak in the scenery. With the West Maui Mountains rising in the distance and providing some fantastic hiking routes, West Maui is one of the finest areas of Maui. It also boasts some of the best beaches on the island (if you don't mind the crowds) and is near Honolua Bay, Lahaina, and Ka'anapali.
On this side of the island, resorts blend into one another, and Kapalua, renowned for championship golf and exclusive vacations, is not far away. Here, the elegance is modest, and the tone is a little calmer. The original Maui resort locations are still in West Maui, where most visitors congregate today. Typically bright and dry, West Maui has ideal beach weather. Additionally, West Maui offers a variety of lodging choices, so whether you want to save money by staying in a condo or spend on a beachfront resort, you can find it there.
youtube
So, how would daily living be on west Maui?
On Front Street, Lahaina's main street, one of the most enormous banyan trees in the world, stands as a recognizable landmark. Front Street offers unlimited dining options, including gourmet dining at Lahaina Grill, outlet stores, boutiques, gift shops, surf shops, and art galleries. It also contains a movie theater. Fleetwood's (owned by Fleetwood Mac member Mick Fleetwood, a Maui resident) offers upscale fare, distinctive cocktails, and live music in a rooftop bar with a view of the setting sun over the water. At the same time, Aloha Mixed Plate serves excellent local fare like poke, saimin, and chicken katsu and offers views of even more spectacular sunsets.
youtube
What about the beaches, though?
At Kaanapali Beach and Kahekili Beach, which also boasts exceptional snorkeling conditions and family-friendly amenities, including bathrooms, showers, and a picnic area, West Maui residents may readily access large expanses of beach. Black Rock, which currently draws tourists for its snorkeling but was formerly known to early Hawaiians as Pu'u Keka'a, a holy site where the spirits of the dead leaped from the physical world into the spirit world, stands between the two. At the same time, Kapalua Bay (designated Best Beach in America by the Travel Channel and Best Beach in the World by Conde Nast Traveler magazine) offers a gorgeous, crescent-shaped Napili Bay with sweet white beaches and quiet waves.
What else can you expect to discover in west Maui?
The Mahana Ridge Trail meanders through old coffee and pineapple farms with stunning coastlines and gulch vistas along the way, while the two-mile Kapalua Coastal Trail weaves its way around four of the area's gorgeous coves. The Lahaina/Kaanapali/Kapalua shore offers endless chances for canoeing, stand-up paddling, and diving for those interested in water experiences. From here, ferries to Lanai and some of the island's top whale-watching excursions and sunset boat cruises (run by Pacific Whale Foundation and Trilogy, for example) leave. Inter-island flights are also offered from a tiny airport at Kapalua.
Front Street is closed to automobile traffic on the second Friday of every month to celebrate a town celebration with food, music, and arts & crafts. Additionally, Lahaina celebrates a Chinese Kite Festival in April and a Chinese New Year event in February. The town hosts the island's only professional fireworks show during its Fourth of July celebration. Its Halloween procession and festivities have earned the title "Mardi Gras of the Pacific."
Other local events include the Celebration of the Arts (including hula performances and other Hawaiian arts, crafts, and cuisine) each March and the Kapalua Tournament of Champions (held each January). Every June, Kapalua has a Wine and Food Festival, and for Kapalua Restaurant Week, local eateries produce unique tasting menus.

You may go on year-round excursions and stay at magnificent resorts in West Maui. The majority of visitors choose to stay longer on the island. Owning property on the island is a wise decision since it enables you to take advantage of its peace whenever and however you choose.
Property values consistently rise
Visitors are drawn to West Maui by its beauty and can return as often as they like. Some people buy a vacation home so they won't have to book hotels or rent rooms each time they visit. However, as more individuals become interested in investing in the island's assets, property values continue to increase consistently.
The island's top beaches are reachable
Tourists typically identify the island's gorgeous West Maui beach as the main draw for visiting. Consider investing in West Maui prime real estate if you love the ocean and want to visit the most excellent beaches anywhere.
A job in paradise
Because of their work responsibilities, many people are hesitant to own real estate on the island. However, the COVID-19 epidemic showed everyone working from home for a while that it is possible to work anywhere.
Living there is typically safe
Millions of tourists visit Maui Island every year, but neither the airport nor the city's main streets need to be guarded by armed soldiers. However, even though crime does exist here, it is frequently less prevalent than in other parts of the country. The island will keep you secure.
