The white lotus weren't forced into child soldierhood at 12 to 14, weren't made to leave their homes and change the world as traumatised preteens, weren't forced to resculpt the political lanscape around them after almost dying multiple times, hadn't endured being hunted by the most well developed militia in the entire world at the time.
The White Lotus didn't have to go through the life ruining trauma of being so let down by all the adults in your life that you had to save and then reshape everything about the world because it was destroying itself.
Because the white lotus were the adults who let the gaang down.
Bumi couldn't be fucked to actually guide his people and city. Pindao was busy chilling out and blocking the world out in his lil fortress. Pakku spent his years being misogynistic and bitter about his fiancée rightfully leaving his ass. Jeong Jeong fucked off to the swamp to assumedly stare at candles all day. And don't get me started on Uncle warcrimes who chose to redeem himself by roadtripping across the world with his extremely traumatised nephew onto whom he's projecting his love for his dead son.
The least this coalition of deadbeats could do was secure an ultimately small in the grand theme of things victory while they sent SIX CHILDREN to fight: an armada of war baloons, an unstable and incredibly volatile child prodigy (who Uncle Iroh also completely fucked over thanks for that one buddy) and the fucking FIRELORD. Have at the, kiddos, you'll do swimmingly.
"Oooh but they were doing stuff behind the scenes" the only time we see any implications of a net of conspiracy or anything of the sort it's when uncle Iroh needs a solid. How bout they do something useful instead of helping the relatively recently 'redeemed' war criminal sneak into the site of his greatest military defeat?
Pipe the fuck down with that 'oooh but the white lotus...' shit. These situations aren't even remotely similar.
Haven't the gaang done enough? Aren't they allowed to enjoy the remainder of their sad, tragic lives in peace?
Excuse Katara for wanting to live her life out peacefully healing and mourning her dead brother and husband, after her entire childhood has been saturated with rage and combat and war.
Excuse Zuko for wanting to stay at his daughter's side after having to restructure an entire country, going against everything he knew and almost his entire family. (While uncle iroh fucked off to his tea shop might i add)
Excuse Toph for wanting to live her remaining days with no strings attached, after being forced into a war at age 12 and becoming responsible for hundreds if not thousands of lives while acting as law enforcement in the new frontier that Republic City was. After all she ever wanted was freedom from her fucked up parents???
God, let them rest.
Actually I get really annoyed when people are like 'Katara, Zuko and Toph should've helped more during legend of korra ' like bitch they're like 80 leave them alone they have arthritis.
#thanks for reminding me that i have a bone to pick with the white lotus#anti white lotus#idk why i got so heated. sorry#toph beifong#zuko#katara#uncle iroh#pakku#king bumi#pindao#jeong jeong

Opinion on the translation of 本座
I have a translation opinion that is just straining at the bit but since I’m just a beginner I’m gonna post it here rather than on twitter so I don’t get ‘Silence, HSK5-6′d about it (tbh idek what my hsk level is at this point bc my skills are so skewed toward reading/translating fantasy novels, like I can often read several straight paragraphs of shangxian without having to look anything up but if faced with, say, cooking instructions in chinese I’d probably still have trouble, and my speaking/writing/listening skills are probably still hsk3-4 at best, when faced with a font change I am rendered illiterate, etc).
But anyway I think it’s become really common to translate 本座 (benzuo) as ‘this venerable one’ and while things like self-appellations are just, so difficult to translate into english, I feel like ‘this venerable one’ is just not an effective translation, for a couple main reasons.
1) It takes a two-syllable phrase and turns it into six syllables. To borrow the words of another, it’s a bit like translating 师弟 (shidi) to ‘junior martial brother’, but if you’re in the moment, shouting “师弟!”, you’re not gonna have time to spit out that mouthful. Granted, 本座 is a self-appellation, which makes it more awkward to translate as anything other than ‘I’ in English--can’t just keep it in pinyin like you would do with 师弟, and moreover keeping it in pinyin would open up a big can of worms for a bunch of other non-我 self-addresses: 在下 (zaixia, humble self-address),朕 (zhen, self-address for the emperor),孤 (gu, self address for a prince),贫道 (pindao, humble self-address for a Daoist),etc.
2) 本座 tends to be a self-aggrandizing self-appellation, and the ‘this’ and ‘one’ in ‘this venerable one’ just automatically connote humility--they de-center the self, and ‘venerable’ can only do so much heavy lifting to make up for that. But 本座 doesn’t de-center the self, it reinforces it, it puts the self on a pedestal. Like, I’m not opposed to translating 在下 as ‘this one’ or even 贫道 as ‘this humble Daoist’ (sparingly, only at the beginning of paragraphs, see reason (1)), because in those cases, they do effectively convey humility. But the only way I could see ‘this venerable one’ being an effective translation of 本座 would be, say, a grandmaster/immortal/deity who is humble by nature, and only uses that appellation to be in keeping with their fellow grandmasters/immortals/deities.
So, what would I do? Well, I’m actually not in favor of just erasing the various context-laden self-appellations by turning them all into ‘I/me’, especially because it’s often important to characterization to see when a character switches between different self-appellations, how they’re modulating between formality and informality, pride and humility, distance and intimacy. In fact, I even distinguish between 你 (you, informal) and 您 (you, formal) by capitalizing the latter, despite that not being standard practice.
I can think of two main ways to go about it:
1) In the past, I’ve translated 本座 using the royal ‘We/Us’, much like I’ve done with 朕, and just put a footnote indicating it’s not quite the same. This, to me, seems like the best option short of changing typeface.
2) But actually, I’ve been thinking about it, and think maybe one could also convey the grandness of 本座 through ‘I/Me’, that is, capitalization and boldface (or maybe just ‘I/me’, just boldface). The eye pauses slightly on the word, but doesn’t get bogged down by a big mouthful.
#or in yan wushi's case boldface hot pink cursive font#that's how you know he means business#yeah so I decided on the low to knock novels off my unfinished list#and ended up going back to reading qianqiu#cursed to be at the level where it would be a real slog to read qianqiu purely thru the raws#(mengxishi's writing is like 2-3x more difficult than musuli's)#but still have Opinions™️ about translation#in any case it's prob best for readers to see a variety of different translations of the term#so they can get a sense of the different shades of meaning

Didn't Pindao taught Zuko? As in the literal royal family he defied?
my favorite piece of avatar lore i’ve ever learned is that piandao apparently also deserted the Fire Nation military, but instead of going on the run he just. went back the Fire Nation. built a fucking mansion about it. and then when the army sent 100 guys to arrest him, he kicked the shit out of them so hard they just fucked off forever.
jeong jeong is out there in a hut in the woods living his most bitter life meanwhile piandao is sitting in his palatial estate sipping tea, fully daring the fire lord to fuck around and find out. bad bitch behavior

Maiko Fluff Week - Day 1
@idonthatemaiko
I’m late, I know, but here we are:
He strolled in the garden searching for the turtleducks, usually they were in the pond but sometimes they liked to go exploring around. He found them near the bushes from the back, all of them squawked when they saw him. He smiled and gave them the leftovers of the bread. He tried to caress the little ones while they were eating but the mother got ruffled. He gave a step back, he wasn't going to hurt them, still the mother keep her stance and he turned around.
He kicked the air, there was nothing to do until mother finished her reunion. He hated when the mothers of Azula's friends came, they spoke about colours, ribbons and nonsense. He didn't even like the girls. They were crazy.
He took his knife out and practiced his movements, like Master Pindao taught him for the basic postures. He keep moving for all around the garden. He stumbled and almost felt into the pond but he helped himself with his other hand, like the Dragon Emperor in the final battle with the Dark Water Spirit.
He's kept battling the evil spirit with dignity and force, he knew he could win even if he fall once, twice, didn't matter, he was going to win. He tripped again and barely could maintain his balance, oh the evil spirit was so treacherous! He thought himself so clever. He turned around and throw the knife with all his might, a knife to the heart of the evil force. The knife bounced from a low branch and he noticed the girl crouched under the tree surrounded by several bushes
He tried to warn her but fell into the ground. He groaned from the pain, she gasped and he stood up as fast as he could. He opened his mouth and he remembered that afternoon in the fountain, why it'd to be her? the crazy one who always smiled would have been better.
But he was brave, he could do it, even if his wrist was in pain.
"Are you fine?" he finally succeeded, still he keep his distance. She nodded and raised her head to be able to see him. How silly of her to have stood there. "You shouldn't be here!" She blinked and looked at him with her eyes very wide. "I could have hurt you" He didn't wanted that, she pointed at the knife that was very far away from her. "Knifes are dangerous." He stated reproaching her. She inclined her head. "Not for little girls." She coked a brow and looked at the stains in him.
He blushed, he may not have been close to hurt her but she could have been in real danger. He tried to brush the stains, she went back to her low position, his right wrist hurt him but he refused to moan in front of her, even if she couldn't see him he didn't wanted to seem weak. He turned around and rubbed his wrist, he tried to compose himself and do as if nothing had happened before deal with her again. He gave some steps to recover his knife.
"What're you doing, brother?" Azula demanded. He rubbed his wrist. "Fooling around with your toy again?" She rolled her eyes.
"It's not a toy!" He complained.
"He cut himself twice this week" She explained to the girl dressed in abhorrent pink, she giggled as answer. "Oh look, he lost it this time" She pointed at the knife in the floor.
"You don't even know how to use it!" He shout and stomped.
Azula crossed her arms and raised her nose. "Please, brother. You just slash people, that's not difficult." She's crazy. "Now, have you advanced with your forms? I learned four more this week" He groaned, she was jealous because she didn't have a weapon like him. "And I'm ready for more advanced movements, you?"
"Get lost!" He roared.
"What terrible manners you have." She complained "Come one, Ty Lee, we will look in other part, there's nothing here."
Azula walked to the other part of the Villa with the pink girl at her heels.
He picked his knife, his wrist was going to hurt for a while. He hoped that didn't interfere with his sword classes. He remembered the other girl and frowned. Wasn't she playing with Azula?
"She's gone" He said angrily. He didn't wanted to lose his training for a silly girl. "I said she is..." She turned her head and looked him at the eyes with a sour expression, his anger was gone. She looked at the floor before looking at the sky.
He sat near the bush, still rubbing his wrist. "Is interesting the sky?" She shrugged. "Then why to look at it?" She sighed. "I think is boring." She may have done a gesture but he wasn't sure. "Why come if you don't like to play?" She moved her head to him, he might have angered her. "I would have stay at home."
"The princess wanted us to play." She finally said and he felt it's the first time he heard her speak for such long time. Usually she spoke in monosyllabic.
"She does that." He cocked his brow. Azula had what she wanted. She got back to look at the sky. "I'm sorry."
She frowned and scowled at him, or maybe glare, he may feel a bit uncomfortable but just a bit.
"Why?"
He was sorry because she had to endure her, but maybe she deserved it. "Because you don't want to be here." They were Azula's friends, surely they had something in common.
"Never say that." She was crazy. Girls were crazy, period.
He fumed and tried to get up supporting himself with his right hand. The sharp pain made him groan. He didn't move.
She moved from her place and sat close to him. "You should go to a physician." He glared at her. "You fell on your wrist."
"No I didn't!" he lied rubbing his injured wrist.
She rolled her eyes and sighed. He tried to hide his injured wrist from her eyes. She stared at him. He hunched.
"You want to lose your training?"
"I can firebend with both hands." She closed her lids a bit and her lips became a rigid line.
"With swords." She spoke more slowly. How did...? He clenched his teeth.
"What would you know?"
She rolled her eyes. "Whatever"
"Girls only play silly games." And they're crazy.
She snatched the knife from his hands. It passed quite close to his cheek that he almost screamed. He involuntary turned around to look for the knife. It's pinned to the lower part of one of the pillars of the corridor. The knife had flown a larger distance than he had thrown it and was firmly pinned.
"That's amazing!" He exclaimed smiling at her.
She shrugged.
"Show me how to do it!" He demanded.
She sighed.
"I know I can do it." He was very confident, he swung his hand to show the movement, but the pain came back.
"First you need to take care of that." She reproached him. He felt embarrassed.
"Can I try with the left?"
She twitched her lips and he felt stupid but maybe it was her way of saying yes.

Buddhist Leaders Pray World Peace In Toronto
Corresponding to the " One Belt, One Road" strategy of China, Buddhist great masters pray for world peace in Chan Shan Temple of Toronto. Delegates, including the Chairman of Chinese Buddhist Association-Venerable Xuecheng Shi, Chairman of Canada Buddhist Association-Venerable Dayi Shi, and Chairman of The American Buddhist Confederation-Venerable Pindao Shi, from China, Canada and United States will hold Buddhist forum in Toronto university. The core theme of this Buddhist forum is "The Perfect Wisdom In Middle Way for the Sustainability of World Peace"
The chairman of The International Hua-Yan Buddhist Federation Mr. Nanren Shi is invited to participate. Mr. Nanren Shi will deliver his theme paper titled " Sustainable Peace In The Perfect Middle Way".
The Buddhist Forum is organized by Buddhist organizations from three countries: China, Canada and America. It will be the milestone in world Buddhist history, and will be a breakthrough event for Chinese Mahayana teaching and Chinese traditional culture to participate their roles in Northern America. A powerful country and nation must have same international influence through its culture.
Mr. Nanren Shi said :"Buddhism has been in China for more than 2500 years. It's a very important component of Chinese culture. Introducing the precious Chinese traditional culture---Chinese Mahayana Buddhism to Northern America, and even the world, is a realistic step to fulfill the strategy of " The Belt and Road" and "Chinese Dream", initiated by Chinese leaders。 The success of three-country "Buddhist Forum" will play an important role in further promoting both Chinese and Buddhist civilizations in Northern America. It also will present Buddhism on the world historical stage in a more positive and vigorous way."
The 1st Buddhist Forum of three countries will be end on June 18th, 2017. The organizer is planning to hold such event in every two years in the future.
