Love the subtlety of this sequence combining the coordination of the upper and lower body, the shoulder core and hips flexor activation, the unilateral and bilateral leg movements, the instability of the board and the small rotation at the end transferring load and activation more into the obliques.
As a non Pilates instructor I can really appreciate the art and science and attention to detail in the Pilates method.

Joel is doing a very difficult exercise with a contra lateral tuck single arm rollout.
The whole body is loaded to some degree but there is a diagonal load running through the torso. Although it’s not identical to the stretch / loading up of a tennis player about to serve, there are some important similarities.
The movements then transition to the frontal plane which loads the myofascial web through different angles and activates the anterior delt and pecs in the upper body and adductors in the lower body. The load through the core and the stable limbs also shifts with the movement transition.
I’ve had coaches of overhead athletes like basketball players and soccer goal keepers explain how these athletes need shoulder girdle control at end of range and though all angles.
Also a great exercise for freestyle / front crawl swimmers.
@pilatesinsync in Menai south of Sydney attracts many elite athletes and with Pilates they can develop mobility, stability and motor control and conditioning variables that their regular power and endurance training can neglect. Follow them to see a lot more.

A front split into a scooter…another creative exercise application by @pilatesinsync
In order to perform a an exercise like this, you need a client at the right left of fitness, movements control and flexibility also with a certain level of upper body strength.
The Reformer carriage is in a track and controlled to some extent by springs. The freeFORM Board is low friction, unlimited in direction and range of motion so it’s the upper body support holding the bar that makes this exercise safe and effective for this client.

Love this from Pilates Insync because it demonstrates the highly responsive unstable rotation application of the freeFORM Board BUT also, the transition from sagital hip extension to frontal plane hip abduction.
You can actually see how the board supported leg foot, ankle, knee and hip stabilizers are recruited.
Think of how important those stabilizers are for anyone who plays a multi direction reaction sport?
In the fitness world, they can be so focused on building strength in the prime movers, they can neglect how important it is to have responsive joint stabilizers functioning optimally.
I’ve said it 1000 times so one more won’t hurt…thanks @pilatesinsync for all of this rich content that I can share with all movement practitioners all over the world.

Double instability combing a freeFORM Board with a foam roller to further activate upper body and core stabilizers and the overall proprioceptive system. Note the continuum from four point kneeling to hover to plank…(static / isometric) to jack rabbit / tuck (dynamic stabilization)
So the combination of roller and board increases neuromuscular activation and it’s just the sort of exercise that would have helped me when I was working toward free standing handstands and yoga balancing postures which are very demanding on the core and upper body.

Kids getting restless without that outdoor time and exercise? Mine used to chase each other around the kitchen and living room and play all kinds of different games. These kids look like young athletes just taking a break from the really hard work but the movements are still really useful and beneficial.
