Art practice by trying some other artist's styles that I'm a huge fan of!
From Top Left to Bottom Right:
@ghostishere0 - the original reason I started this doodle, as I wanted to draw a "shepherd lovers squad" and their OC (who I don't know the name of F) was the perfect fit for it.
@luminesparkz - the best interpretation of Pom pikmin. If I were Mr. Nitendo, I would make them the official comic creator along with the manga comics.
@marblyso - If I was a little more unhinged and made a shrine to Erma Shepherd, it would be mostly marblyso's art of her, it's my absolute favorite Erma depiction <3
@rexscanonwife - another OC that I don't know the name of, but she makes such a cute pair with Shepherd and has such cute art that why not, let Shepherd have multiple canon wives at this point.
@citruscrisp - I think this is secretly Alph in an alternate universe where he makes comics about himself, because citrus has Alph's character SPOT ON, and also loves to put that boy in a situation (which I am happy for, I enjoy seeing that boy in a situation)
@daisythecomic - oooaaaaaaaaaa they look like little mice people they look so soft and sweet I love them so muuuuuuuuuccchhhhhhhhh
@louie-posting - I can't not include actual Louie Pikmin on this list.
@kiwilittle - the soft, the sweet, the one who makes the best family style art, really making me wish I was an inch tall so I could go to holidays with the olimar family, also their wife design is so cute that if Olimar didn't already get it I would shoot my shot for her m a a m
@pikbugz - really nails the soft aesthetic that makes pikmin such a calming series, and their coloring style is so soft and good that it gives me the ratatouille nostalgia flashback moment.
@splitster - more than just the wraith au guy, they are the one who makes incredible and funny comics; I've seen so many fics with the rescue corps where I can pick up that yes, this trait came from a splitster comic, and that's a GOOD thing. Made me actually LIKE Dingo, the nerve.
@diesaur - I can't do diesaur's incredible, unique art justice, they are amazing at using geometrics and have the best charlie (his little teefs...)
@solluxander - Cars, one of my favorite pikmin Ocs I've ever seen! Collin deserves a slightly unhinged sentient fluffball boyfriend, and I always love seeing the new ways Cars will interact with him.
@sillypikmin - all hail the best pikposter, who I'm still convinced is an actual leafling living on actual pnf-404, literally every time I have a bad day I look at drawings of Moss and feel better.
@eggpathy - thank goodness they came back to give us old man yaoi. I keep their drawing of olimar kissing the pikmin good night on my phone and look at it before I go to sleep and so far I have yet to have a single nightmare.
@the-knife-consumer - the only person I trust with Louittany, toxic yuri my beloved, I just adore their beasty brittany design so so much, I wish I could have a small brittany to live in my house...
anyway they have the best headcanons for our beloved blorbo hamster people
@natibranch - there's a voice line of Louie going "wa-ha!" in this really cute sing-song voice and every time I see any art by natibranch I hear that sound in my head as a little burst of serotonin, they just nail that exact feeling so so well.
@pikked-min - Another of my favorite Pikmin OCs, Yuva! A really interesting and unique character concept with a lot of thought put into the worldbuilding, followed by a strong unusual personality that had me looking at the pikmin world through a new perspective entirely. Please, someone, give them some sunglasses. Read the fic it's so good
@ssserf - artistic and deep while still somehow looking like official nintendo tm art, genuinely the best at the pikmin proportions, how could I resist trying my hand at the classic amazing beautiful Brittany Fruit Sweater moment, literally SO iconic
@kashi-pon - while I was working on the part of this that was just kashi's various highlife dresses there was a part of me that wanted to dedicate the rest of the space to paying homage to the joke comic of Louie lifting his skirt to show Olimar that he's wearing shorts, except this dress....well......
@diamondwerewolf - the reason we got louie in a little bunny outfit anyway, and thus why we got kashi's dress version. you single-handedly turned Louie into a tumblr sexyman, how could you

this is part of a longer ask and we didn’t want this response to get lost in the sauce, so here’s a separate post about it! brought to you once again by thea who is the only #gamer #girl 😵💫
mike: mike is Such a nintendo fanboy to me and a big fan of the legend of zelda series! his favorite entries are breath of the wild, tears of the kingdom, and twilight princess. he also is a big fan of the story of skyward sword! i don’t know if we will ever mention it in acswy, but he is in the middle of his totk playthrough as the fic is progressing, so he does spend a lot of his free time with his switch! i think he also plays mario games and a firm metroid enjoyer!
will: animal crossing mostly! he likes to watch other people play video games more than he likes playing them himself, especially horror games. i think he has also dabbled in pikmin, kirby, and yoshi games, but gets stressed out easily as the player, so he doesn’t play them a lot!
max: biiiig big fan of the last of us entries and red dead 2 but also like. all the bratz games. duality of woman
el: Any Farming Sim. loves stardew and story of seasons the most! and sims 4. i also think she likes puzzle games like unpacking and a little to the left! and 2 me she is a surprisingly formidable smash opponent.
lucas: final fantasy and kingdom hearts for sure! and the spiderman entries for ps4/5. i also think he played tekken and timesplitter as a kid. if he’s playing nintendo it’s mario or yoshi! mike begs pleads cries and throws up for lucas to play zelda but atp he won’t budge just to annoy mike 💙 he will watch mike play tho and look up a walkthrough for him if he needs it!
dustin: i think dustin loves classic platformers like crash bandicoot and spyro and is a big fan of the fire emblem series bc it’s very strategy oriented. he’s definitely more into pc games than the rest of the party as well! i’m not a huge pc gamer myself so i’m not gonna throw out any specific titles other than obviously minecraft LOL he also strikes me as a banjo and kazooie and jak and daxter fan. also chibi robo bot!

Calling all Pikmin fans
I'm looking for a very specific kind of fic, and I need to know if it exists. Or, if it doesn't, maybe some dope ass author will make it happen.
Prompt: The Captains (could be any of them really) actually encountering a real, full sized human. I know the Pikmin world is implied to be some kind of post apocalypse, where humans are gone, but I really want to read about these tiny little dudes actually encountering the creatures that made all the treasures they find. Could be peaceful, could be terrifying, could be a Humans are Space Orcs kind of deal, I just have a mighty need to see that interaction.
Also, I don't mean in the Smash Bros cannon. Smash Bros doesn't have the scale I'm looking for. I need these 1.5 inch tall hamster people to see a full grown human adult. Please, if anyone knows of a fic like that, or wants to write one, send it my way!

is it just me or has most pikmin fan content dried up? pikmin wraiths call has been dead for almost a year, same with pikmin echo. most pikmin hacks have been canceled or delayed, and barely any new fics are being released or updated (i am guilty of not updating my own fic). i’m not saying anyone has a responsibility to make anything, but it’s strange to see how it’s dried up. where is the spark of madness that the subreddit is so well known for?
anyways pikmin 5 when
Tbh the current state is actually the norm; the spike of activity was caused by Pikmin 4 coming out.
Also, unfortunately, most fandom activities happen in "closed gardens" like Discord. So there's more happening that you just don't get to see.
#borb answers#Also this reminds me I have a finished chapter of my fic I keep forgetting to post LMAO#Gonna do that now-

Pikmin Fanfiction
Hello. I am finally posting my horror pikmin fanfiction. It is also on ao3 with complete archive warnings and tags. I tried to make this fic approachable for pikmin and non-pikmin fans alike. All creatures or treasures have description brackets after them for ease of reading. Please enjoy.
***
Rescue Corps Incident Report
Investigation Status: Open, Ongoing
Charges Listed: Alleged Insubordination of Indentured Force (Pikmin), Breakage of Procedural Protocols in Daytime Harvest / Nighttime Harvest of Glow Sap, Deterioration of Authority in Harvest Area 65, Unlawful Alliance with Infected Subject (Leafling), Breakdown of Communications with Designated Superiors, Arson, and Untreated Psychosis of Employed Subject
Subject: Koppai x Hocotate Freight (KoCo Freight), Field Harvest and Security of Transport Unit 6321, Employee 9862i, Thistle of Koppai, Region of Residence Garrenoi
***
Log 1…“Arrival on PNF-404”
Four of us sat in the hull, unspeaking. There were windows, but I did not want to see outside so I stared straight ahead.
Our transport ship glided through space—I knew we were moving but it felt like nothing was happening—the moment we approached the exosphere of the planet, there came a shift. We passed through an electric field. It sent an inaudible hissing into my skull. For a moment, something like a flash, and I saw within my arms the bones white and glowing.
I closed my eyes. This was unreality.
Everything would be better after we landed, I thought. Just like they told us in training. Space travel is liminal.
The ship began its descent down down into the troposphere. In a moment, the pressure dropped as we landed on the planet’s surface. Three field workers shuffled past me, their single antennae glowing red, and exited through the hull door. One of them was a former coworker of mine at the juice plant. His name was Favinger. I did not know how he passed the physical tests to become a harvester. He was immunocompromised, prone to respiratory infections; anyone could find him in the factory by following the sound of his coughing.
Harvesters had the highest turnover rate on PNF-404. KoCo Freight would take whoever applied. But Favinger I feared would not last. He was avoiding the alternative—communal starvation. The emaciation of his family and friends. The dead-eyed facial expressions, the hollow cheek bones.
I exhaled slowly.
We flew awhile before we began our descent once more. I carefully examined my arms, but the visual hallucination of seeing my bones did not happen again. Now I wondered…had I seen it at all?
***
We landed.
At the threshold of the hull door, I shielded my eyes. It was sunset. Long streaks of orange slanted through the flower stems around me. Above was the only break in the floral canopy where our ship had descended; this was a forest without end.
The ground felt softer here than the ground on Koppai—was I imagining it? No wonder we could not grow enough food at home. Nothing but rock beneath our feet.
The pilot called out that he would be there in a moment; next he spoke indistinctly answering a radio transmission…something about the Chronos Reactor.
I checked the kopad on my wrist. Data had flooded into it from KoCo Freight satellites. Now I could see maps carefully labeled with structures, red creatures, and most interesting of all green dots that represented harvesters. I watched transfixed as they moved across the maps. There were dozens of them, but it was hard to believe it. It was hard to believe any of this.
Suddenly there was movement. I snapped to attention, listened to only my breath in my helmet. Tiny white flowers trembled through a patch of clover. Little red faces peered out; pointy noses twitched and sniffed.
“Oh! Pikmin,” I whispered.
They emerged out of the clover, slid down flower stems, appeared from behind rocks in a swarm to surround myself and the ship. I stared at their little red faces and—unbelievably—tears filled my eyes. They took turns getting a closer look at me, touching my suit.
Mmm, mmm! They kept making that noise. Excitement! Like they had “discovered” me. Mmm!
I felt…there was something holy in this encounter. These little creatures had picked, fought, and died for the food we Koppaites processed into juice. They were the sole reason our population did not drop by 1/3 over the winter. And yet when I looked into their little faces, I knew it meant nothing to them. They had no feelings about it.
Through the clover appeared a rigid man—he walked like he had a knife in his side—and he whistled so loudly that I jumped. Were the whistles really that loud? How terrible! I felt it in my ribs!
The pikmin cleared a path for the man. Coming up behind him was a woman riding a black pup. These were to be my new teammates.
The man was Klark, the woman was Zileke, and the pup was Yew.
Klark hollered a greeting and asked for my name. Was…was he joking? I couldn’t believe he didn’t know my name. I told him. Behind us, the pilot appeared and threw my two duffle bags out of the hull door letting them crash at my feet. The pilot clasped Zileke’s hand, chatted with her as she typed on her kopad.
“Keep up, Thistle. Can you do that?” Klark asked without waiting for my response.
He led me into the flower forest. I ran to keep up with him. My suit felt like a layer of loose adipose—a blubbery wet swimsuit, but it did not slow me down. It enhanced the movement of my legs, tempered the effects of foreign gravity, lapped at my sweat to recirculate into my water supply. All of this—unfamiliar and fragile—kept me alive. It felt so uncomfortable; I kept pulling at the hem line down my thigh as it suctioned itself to my skin. The red pikmin however embraced my appearance: the bobbing of my antenna, the artificial sound of my breath coming through the filtered speaker. They ran alongside us in a membrane, eagerly looking back at me. I tried to count how many there were—30?
We arrived at basecamp a few minutes later. Klark ordered the red pikmin into the onion. They scattered quickly. As they cleared out, I realized they had carried my duffle bags and then dropped them on the ground. One of the pikmin paused as it climbed the leg of the onion and looked down at me.
An AI voice announced from the ship’s megaphone, “Perimeter motion alarms now active.”
“There we are,” Klark said, tapping at his kopad. “The man who sleeps with a machete is a fool every night but one.”
How frightening to think about—a nocturnal attack from creatures. On Koppai, we did not worry. Wild creatures were rare to see.
“When it is nighttime, do we only worry about creatures?” I asked Klark.
“Huh? What do you mean?”
“Should we fear people out here as well?”
Klark observed me for a moment before answering. “Nothing but teammates out here. Familiar faces all with IDs attached. Anyone who comes banging on our door in the middle of the night is in need of serious help,” he said. “We’ve never had issue with castaways if that’s what you’re referring to. They’re not for us to worry about anyway. The Rescue Corps is responsible for them.”
I said nothing further.
Inside their ship—KoCo Freight 6321—we sat at a table with our helmets removed. I drank the bottle of juice Klark set down without asking any questions. I couldn’t believe how good it was—citrus and sour and pulpy. It filled my aching stomach. I lapped at the droplets on my lips.
God, it was so good.
“That was for Zileke, actually,” Klark said. My face burned with embarrassment. “You should not have drank that. Really. You are in for a long night.” He leaned back in his chair. The hull door opened, and Yew charged right at me, smooshed her face to the ground to smell my boots. Zileke came inside next.
When she removed her helmet, her long dark hair fell and rested on her shoulders. She paused when she saw the empty bottle, looked me in the eye, and then punched my arm.
“Ouch!” I barked.
My arm blared with pain—she’d punched me in the same spot I’d gotten 9 inoculations in over the past 30 days, and she knew it too.
“New recruits are not supposed to drink,” Zileke said. “Don’t say you didn’t know because I know they tell you that in onboarding.” She turned to Klark. “You sat there and let her drink that?”
“Well, she drank it very quickly,” Klark said.
“She’s going to projectile vomit everywhere.”
“Most likely. But she’ll have to clean up after herself.”
“I wouldn’t dare throw up this juice,” I said. How could they think I’d waste juice? I’d sooner lick my vomit off the floor then let it go to waste.
They ignored me.
“Listen, I was saving that juice. I fucking labeled it. It was the last of the pocked airhead [dekopon],” Zileke said. Klark handed her another bottle, said it was lesser mock bottom [plum]. She crinkled her nose at it. “I work all day just to come home and drink this muck.”
“Juice is juice.” Klark waved her away. “You’re tired. Go to bed, Zileke.”
I bit my tongue. I had never heard someone complain about food before. They even had a choice about what they wanted to eat! I stared at the empty bottle in front of me unable to comprehend.
Zileke patted her thigh. Yew chirped and followed her to the sleeping quarters. I rubbed my sore arm—she was a cunt for punching me. Klark smirked, reading my thoughts.
He then asked about my training.
“Training? Oh yes, lectures about the creatures and the environment on PNF-404,” I answered. “As soon as we signed on, they took us to medical to begin physical tests and inoculation. They wanted us ready in exactly 29 days to be prepped and launched here.”
“Ah-ha,” is all he said to that.
I reached down to my duffle bag and pulled out a gaming tablet. Klark nodded, already knew what it was; he said the Dandori games were merely a preamble for the mental re-conditioning necessary for new recruits. [“Dandori is the art of organizing your tasks strategically and working with maximum efficiency”]
“Of course, you’re not here to harvest,” Klark said. “You’re our new security officer, but the work is the same. You need to be ubiquitous—watching me, watching Zileke, checking the path ahead, checking the path behind, checking your map, commanding squads of pikmin to cover the landscape—blue in the water, pink in the air—whatever is needed. You must live and breathe with eyes in the back of your head.”
He crossed his arms and looked at me a moment. “You seem a little feral, you know that?”
What does that mean?
I frowned at him, said, “How many pikmin will I get tomorrow? For security. What kind?”
Fifteen rock pikmin. He would be exclusively training me while Zileke and Yew harvested. They had eight treasures to excavate the following morning. He emphasized morning—they needed to harvest 19 total treasures tomorrow.
My mouth was agape. I asked him, “Is that all?”
He was incredulous. “Is that a—is that all?! You have no idea what you’re saying. More than 19 treasures in one day?” He barked a laugh. “You were a packer. I can tell just by looking at your chipped fingernails. You’re used to sealing boxes, moving pallets to transport ships. Easy repetition.” He exhaled. “What do you think it’s like for us out here in field work? I do want you to answer me that.”
“All I know,” I said to him, “is that it’s hard to concentrate, to lie down, to read, to talk, to do anything when you haven’t eaten all day. Everything loses meaning. That is what we deal with every day on Koppai. Food is very important to me.”
I stood up, took my duffle bags with me as I headed to the sleeping quarters. The door slid shut behind me. I unpacked—hairbrush here, lotion there, clothes folded and slid into drawers—and then sat down on the bed with my packing gloves in my hands. They were gray with a few oil stains.
Food is very important to me.
Part of this new job was being permitted several juices a day. I could…how much would I be able to accomplish without the distraction of hunger? I wanted to see that version of myself.
***
Come the early hours of the morning, I laid in a fetal position on the floor of my room. Sweat beaded my forehead. My gut churned with violence. Nothing on this earth would permit me to waste that juice.
So bad was the gut pain that I felt it even in my dreams. I was bent over a conveyor belt, labeling boxes with recipient addresses. The machine kept alarming; some of the boxes had been sealed with empty bottles, and these I could not open. I kept putting them aside to fix later.
Sometime in the night, I crawled to the bathroom to drink water. Or had I crawled across the factory floor? It had been sticky, I had my packer gloves on…my arms flashed in transparency like they had on the ship; glowing white bones. Outside my window, I saw a single red pikmin sat below the onion. It stared at our ship.

Oh!!!! 9, 29, & 38 please!
fic writer ask game
9. Tell us your favorite thing to drink when you write
I'm gonna be real with you anon, I drink diet Mountain Dew like it's water. Something something self medicating for ADHD (NOT THAT IT FUCKING WORKS)
29. Which fic would you most like to have fan art done for?
TITLE DROP TIME: catch/cradle. This is the first entry in one of the "sequel" lines from DLD, but I might end up putting it in both series on AO3 because (1) they're all the same chronology, just with different contexts (let you think over that one for a little while with the riddle), and (2) some of its contents are specifically relevant to the main series between callbacks to DLD and calls forward to... WELL. We'll just leave it at that :)
I had intended to do this title drop in the upcoming spoiler post, but I still have to respond to comments and write chapter 5 and FUCK man I have had no fucking time for anything these past few weeks. Anyway.
There's a lot of really fun stuff that could have fanart in this one. A lot of Images. If the true form of the Pikmin's side of DLD is a wordless graphic novel and the true form of Olimar's side of DLD is a stream-of-consciousness As It Is, the true form of several specific scenes of catch/cradle would be a film, because there are a lot of framing tricks you can pull off in film that don't really work the same way in text mediums.
(Mostly that you can show-don't-tell without specifically "showing" and thereby "telling". There is one specific location where if I could avoid describing it in detail and leaving noticing specific elements as a purely visual thing — or, to put it another way, to leave the POV character on the level of context they would be on and allowing the audience to pick up the very specific references to previous events and how another character has chosen to contextualize them — would be better than having to say "okay so this thing is in the doorway and this thing is on the wall in a central position and this thing is over here and etc. etc." because there is SO much little reasoning behind some of these things and I would want viewers to react to it organically rather than for it to have ANY attention called to it.)
The dev title for this line of sequels would be the brave and sacred earth for a lot of reasons. As I broke it down to my partner in DMs:
"Sacred earth" as in a play on "sacred turf", because I don't intend to touch the primary topic of this sequel line in ANY fashion ANYWHERE else EVER again - it's too wholly holy to be messed with so trivially. There can be any number of stories set in this chronology, and I do in fact have some very low priority ideas that I would probably only get to years down the line if ever, but the way I see it, there's simply no point for me to ever touch this "kind" version of the base concept without treating the events of DLD chapter 4 as part of its canon. I will leave it as an exercise to the reader to determine why — but if you can't quite figure it out now, the tags that I'll be adding to chapter 5 will make it obvious. Probably. Technically this is a me thing because I have BEEF with another story for not handling a similar subject exactly how I would have.
"Brave" as in:
38. Pick three of your fics and share a song to go with each
I have a 3 hour long playlist of DLD series songs. So!
catch/cradle: The Weight of Us by Sanders Bohlke.
The time has come, let us be brave The time has come, let us be brave Shake off all of your shame The time has come, let us be brave The time has come, let us be brave Let us be brave Let us be brave
This just really sums up the emotional arc in a way? Sometimes things are a change for the better, but recognizing that they are better introduces impossible amounts of guilt that these things that are better are not what was before. I could elaborate further, but really that's what it comes down to.
Other contenders: The Trap by Tally Hall, On A Good Day (cover) by Spencer Pugh, Our Love Remains by rei brown
[TITLE REDACTED] (codename: DLDP3): Body to Flame by Lucy Dacus.
Believe me, I'm speaking plainly and painfully Trying to stay elegant, eloquent and delicate to you I see you holding your breath with your arms outstretched Waiting for someone to come rip open your chest
Lamellamar song of ALL TIME. There's an entire scene (not written, just an outline) that I posted in a more artsy Discord server like eight months ago that unfortunately got ignored. But! Holy shit this one is so real you have no idea.
Other contenders: The Calling by The Amazing Devil, Two Ravens by Hawthorn
dogs leading dogs: By My Side by Uzo Aduba and the Godspell ensemble cast.
It's a really hard choice, because I can't even say that there is a single song that encapsulates all of base DLD for me, but By My Side comes really, really close. I can't even pull out specific lyrics because it's just. All of it. Our two dogs are each all three of the follower and the pebble and the betrayed, and it keeps the same tender-yet-tragic tone of everything except chapter 6 (which is kind of its own thing, you'll see when we get there).
Other contenders are mostly songs that are INSANE fits for specific scenes without being Encapsulating, so here we go:
I'm Your Man by Mitski is a second overall pick for "THE DLD song". It's not quite the right tone, or at least not anymore, but it came out right when I was starting the initial drafts of this project so I can't not mention it.
Gravedigger (Acoustic version) by Dave Matthews. This one was actually intentionally referenced in-text but we haven't seen that yet (it's in chapter 5).
New Normal by Jack Stauber is a good summation of where we're going to be left off on one of our timelines.
Wanderer's Lullaby by Adriana Figueroa is one that I've regularly come back to for some of the more emotionally difficult scenes. The last ~300ish words of vi. love (as an absence) were written to it, as were a few portions of the Pikmin parts of chapter 5.
The Woods by San Fermin is more of a general chapter 1 song, but as a result it carries relevance with the entire rest of the fic.
How Did I Die? by Einstürzende Neubauten is also a more general song but it doesn't match as well as I'd like in some ways. It does, however, mirror the structure very nicely — there's a clear change between the "body" and "epilogue" of the song.
Thanks for the ask! :D

10, 14?
10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
the first pikmin fic i wrote definitely got a lot more attention than i thought it would! i got a lot of really long and thoughtful responses, which was amazing :0 i kinda thought it wouldn't be so popular since it was short and gen-rated, but thankfully i was wrong!
14. If you could see one of your fics adapted into a visual medium, such as comic or film, which fan fic would you pick?
my currently wip has some fun visuals, so that would be neat i think... i'll probably do an illustration for it at some point as well, since i really wanna visualize the planet that the story takes place on!
in terms of older fics... i think my liushen fic "unripe fruit" could make a fun comic :0

I have not been on here in awhile, so I don't know how many people are still actively following me, but I guarantee you that my interests have changed since I last posted something lol By which I mean this is a warning to all followers that this blog is about to be a Pikmin and FNaF appreciation area (yes both at once) so if you're not here for that this is your chance to flee. (But if you are a FNaF fan, I have a fan fic in the works that you might enjoy. And an art side blog dedicated entirely to said fan fic)
#Just a little update lol#I got back on here mostly to support my fic and want to support other artists too

I will be honest and say that I think being magnetically drawn to works destined for small fanbases makes it hard for me to get into this mindset well enough to offer advice. So, let me talk about how I approach fandom instead, and maybe some of my philosophy and experience will be helpful.
Like I said, most of my fandoms are tiny, as a consequence of the kind of works I find meaningful and fun. I read and play a lot of xenofiction, and I play a lot of offbeat indie passion projects. My favourite works tend to be offbeat xenofiction (at the very least furry) videogames. And aside from that, I read a lot of nonfiction and, when my executive function lets me, watch a lot of documentaries. Even when I do play more popular games and write fic/draw art for them, I'm often doing weird things with them because that's what I find interesting.
That said, I'm fairly comfortable with saying I'm a Big Name Fan for Ecco the Dolphin. At least, that's the sense I get by how many people recognise me when I poke my head into conversations about the series, or how I've done things over the years like start its Wikipedia and TV Tropes pages, and how I stand as one of the most prolific fanfic authors and fanartists in the fandom.
Ecco is one of those aforementioned weird xenofiction games. It is, I would hazard to say, the Weird Xenofiction Game, the granddaddy of many in some form or another. It's popular enough, but it's no Super Mario Bros. or even Pikmin. It's old, it's difficult, it's strange. My kind of thing.
I didn't set out to become a BNF Ecco fan. I just love my weird dolphin game so much that I have had a lot to say about it over the years, and it turns out other folks want to listen. It happened organically by me never shutting up about this thing I like.
I get feeling lonely when you post something you worked hard on and it seems there's nothing but crickets. I've been there. But give it time. Sooner or later, someone will be thrilled to see it.
And hey, at the end of the day, I try to make sure my work has at least one fan: me. Other people enjoying the things my brain dishes out is a nice bonus.
my biggest obstacle as a writer is that i desperately want to be a popular and well-known fic author, but my main fic inspiration comes from characters most fans don’t want to read fic for, or ideas that go against popular fanon/characterization and so are doomed from the start. i end up feeling paralyzed and like i can’t write the unpopular ideas I want to write, because i hate knowing i could have done better by writing something with broader appeal. but whenever i try to write solely for numbers i lose motivation while the halfway through the fic. so i end up unable to write anything and feeling miserable because of it.
i want to see my unpopular ideas come to life, but i don’t want to see my fics crash and burn and keep missing the chance to create fic that people really love. so most times, i don’t write anything, but i hate that i’m so hamstrung by my own anxieties. i so desperately wish i could create one of those extremely well-known long fics that most people love and always rec everywhere, but i feel like i’m completely incapable of that. i know i should be writing for myself, but i’m greedy and want results and for people to like my fic, however unlikely that is. wanting to write my ideas but knowing i’ll limit my audience if i do is something that’s constantly on my mind. do you have any advice for me?
My biggest question after reading your ask is simply: why?
You're very clear about wanting to be a popular writer. You want to write a fic that lots of people talk about, and you want people to know who you are. Have you examined that desire at all?
You say that the things you actually want to write are not the things that will make you a popular author. That means you have a choice:
write things you don't care about with no guarantee of becoming that Big Name Fan or
write things you love and enjoy spending time writing and know that BNF status will probably never happen.
Writing fanfic is really not a great way to try to become popular. It's an even worse way to try to become "famous" in any kind of way. So dig into what it is that you hope to get from the "broader audience" that you could appeal to by writing something you don't really like.
Are you trying to get a feeling of being liked? Respected? Looked up to? Do you want to be someone other fans look to for advice or for setting the tone of the fandom? Do you want love? Power? Some kind of community connection? Recognition of the effort you put into your works?
Some of those things likely will require you to pretend to be someone you're not. You might even manage to write that one big fic that gets thousands of comments and tons of people talking about it on tumblr (or wherever else you care about, social media-wise).
Others you can probably still get by writing your "unpopular" ideas but seeking out your fellow fans. It will take more legwork to find them and you'll need to be willing to be the first one to reach out for a conversation, but it can definitely be done.
I'll leave it up to you to decide what you actually want, anon. But take your time and scrape off the top layer of shiny thoughts about popularity first. Then you'll be able to see what's underneath.

a while ago, back in the late-summer early-fall of pikmin 4, i wound up sifting through all 24 (at the time) pages of pikmin fanfiction on a certain website (which is rare for me because I'll usually go several years without reading any sort of fan's fiction), and sent myself the links so that i could find the ones I liked again in the future (because in the past I've lost track of rare pokéani fics I liked). but then it would be difficult to tell them apart, so I'd add small descriptions… and then small reviews… and then, by that point… while there's nothing wrong with keeping things to yourself sometimes, if mini-reviews are already written anyways, then isn't it best to just paste that into a comment that might make someone happy? well, anyways…
i need (want) to get better at interacting with/sharing thoughts on "the things that people make" … i find it very difficult to put together a comment/compliment for stand-alone visual art pieces, but I generally have a lot of thoughts on longform narratives. and people are always saying they love to hear thoughts on narratives they make, so…
#although in this specific case that'd require logging into ao3 which I don't really want to do… but i digress & this example isn't the only#instance of this line of thought.#anyways… thoughts I think are going to be concise always turn long. oh well.#fiftytenpost

I'M SO EXCITED I'M STARTING A PROJECT SOON FOR SOME CHARACTERS BUT IM REALLY NERVOUS BC I THINK PEOPLE WILL FUCKING HATE IT BUT AAAAAH (under the read more, this is a long fucking post lol)
((Its pikmin related))
Okay i have this so far:
Plum and a bunch of his friends (who are all supermega big fans of specific pikmin ((although none are as intense as Plum))) that are all close friends from across both hocotate and koppai, and they're all planning on getting into an academy that trains people for space travel and exploration
The heads of the academy are obviously Alph Brittany and Charlie, because they're responsible for saving all of koppai, and because I Say So, Olimar is there to give seminars on flora and fauna and research done on them(usually through pikmin version of zoom) and then Louie would have a seminar where they both learn common sign language and what creatures on 404 are safe to and not to eat. Brittany runs a botany and plant ID course, Charlie runs a strength and physical education course, and Alph runs a course helping them learn the ins and outs of how to repair ships, suits, koppads ans more. Ofc each kid would choose one to specialize in, and it would continue from there.
I want a chapter that introduces us to each kid, then a chapter where they all hold interviews
Then the third chapter is whwre they all meet up and school stuff starts, kinda like Doc Scratch's school for kids or whatever that fic was called
ANYWAYS here's everyone and everything i have so far
Ruby- Red pikmin inspired ofc. Very stoic, not that talkative but is very frightening when upset, she/her, joins the Phys Ed branch
Bee- Yellow pikmin inspired, kinda ditzy but can hold onto small details. Not the greatest memory but can tell you several facts about things they love. They/them. Joins the cooking branch
Indie- Blue, Gym dudebro, total softie with friends. Xe/xem. Joins the Phys Ed branch with Ruby.
Plum- Purple, Curious cat, usually to a detrimental degree. Loves his friends and fights for them, even if he doesn't do it for himself. He/him. Joins the Research Exploration branch
Chiffon- White, Cheery socialite, has trouble opening up but once she does its hard to shut her down. She/her/he/him. Joins the engineering branch
Melon- Winged, Quiet, highly emotionally intellegent, "old soul" type beat, sort of group mom, he/him, joins the Botany branch
Ash- Rock, cold, will ghost you. If kept in warmth will start heating up (very social with friends. Took years lol) Sunburn so fucking fast dude. They/them. Joins the Botany branch
Ruby and Bee have met in person before because Hocotate is admittedly much smaller than koppai.
Hocotatians: Ruby, Bee, Ash
Koppaites: Plum, Indie
Mixed: Melon, Chiffon
Chiffon swears she's from Koppa Lee, much to everyone's annoyance (not really! They love her! She wants to be an alien queen and they respect it)
Thats....... about it
