Nel nono e penultimo episodio andiamo alla scoperta dell’improvvisazione libera e di alcune delle sue principali caratteristiche. Avremo il piacere di sentire anche le voci di Francesca Naibo, Francesco Cigana, Nick Acorne e Kamal Sabran (che ringrazio dal profondo del cuore per il loro contributo), musicisti che hanno fatto dell’improvvisazione il nucleo della loro ricerca sonora. Sarà un viaggio sorprendente, un racconto collettivo fatto di suoni e parole. Orecchie e menti aperte, qui il suono è libero!

> MARCO COLONNA – Yokai

Polistrumentista, compositore, improvvisatore e scrittore, Marco Colonna è uno dei nomi più in vista del jazz italiano odierno. Si dedica da anni alla ricerca sul clarinetto basso per esplorare tutte le sfumature di questo strumento. In questo lavoro dialoga con Cristian Maddalena al shamisen ed elettronica e Fabrizio Spera alla batteria e percussioni.

> PIERO BITTOLO BON - Spelunker

Progetto solista di Piero Bittolo Bon. Utilizzando un sistema di microfoni costruito su misura e collegato in diverse posizioni al suo sassofono contralto, Bittolo Bon cattura risonanze e vibrazioni ultraterrene dal suo strumento acustico. Inserisce poi questi suoni catturati dai microfoni in sintetizzatori, drum machine e stompbox in tempo reale, creando viaggi improvvisati nel suono.

> DOOOM ORCHESTRA – Our Sea Lies Within

Fondata da Francesco Cigana nel 2018, DOOOM Orchestra è un collettivo padovano di giovani musicisti che indagano la pratica dell'improvvisazione. "Our Sea Lies Within" concentra l'esperienza accumulata in sei anni di studio e più di trenta performance e concerti site-specific. Un comune oceano di suoni che si materializza grazie alle forti connessioni tra i musicisti.

> C.O.R.N.! - Ona

Duo composto dai due maghi dell’improvvisazione Mykyta Prykhodchenko aka Nick Acorne (elettronica) e Patrick Wurzwallner (batteria). "Ona" è la decima uscita del meta-album "UNI C.O.R.N! 2" che consiste di 12 album eseguiti dal vivo (uno per ogni mese dell'anno) in diversi luoghi insoliti di Graz. "Ona" è stato registrato al Butcher's Barbershop, Graz.

> FRANCESCA NAIBO & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – Free Improvisation

Improvvisazione libera inedita di Francesca Naibo (chitarra elettrica, oggetti, effetti) e Andreij Rublev (no input mixer, live electronics). Registrato presso l’home studio di Rublev nel dicembre 2023.

> KAMAL SABRAN & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – No Distance

Improvvisazione libera di Kamal Sabran (sampler, sintetizzatore) e Andreij Rublev (no-input mixer, live electronics) registrata dal vivo il 23 aprile 2022 presso Exp.Sound.Lab, studio di registrazione nelle colline della provincia di Treviso, Italia.

> KAMAL SABRAN – Sound Medicine Vol 3

Kamal Sabran è un artista e ricercatore Malese. Ha un dottorato di ricerca in Arte e Design presso l'Università Tecnologica MARA. Insegna alla University of Science Malaysia. La sua pratica è interdisciplinare ed esiste all’intersezione tra arte, scienza e tecnologia. La sua opera artistica comprende musica sperimentale, performance art e installazioni. La pratica di Kamal è collaborativa e spesso persegue il contatto con altri artisti, musicisti, ricercatori e scienziati.

In the ninth episode we discover free improvisation and some of its main characteristics. We will also have the pleasure of hearing the voices of Francesca Naibo, Francesco Cigana, Nick Acorne and Kamal Sabran (thanks from the bottom of my heart!), musicians who put improvisation at the core of their sound research. It will be a surprising journey, a collectively narrated story made of sounds and words. Ears and minds open, the sound is free here!

> MARCO COLONNA – Yokai

Multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser and writer, Marco Colonna is one of the most prominent names in contemporary Italian jazz. He has dedicated himself to the bass clarinet for years to explore all the nuances of this instrument. In “Yokai” he plays with Cristian Maddalena on shamisen and electronics and Fabrizio Spera on drums and percussion.

> PIERO BITTOLO BON - Spelunker

Solo project of Piero Bittolo Bon. Using a custom made microphone system attached at different locations on his alto saxophone, Bittolo Bon captures unearthly resonances and vibrations from his acoustic instrument. Bittolo Bon feeds these captured tones into synthesizers, drum machines, and stompboxes in real time, creating improvised journeys into sound.

> DOOOM ORCHESTRA – Our Sea Lies Within

Founded by Francesco Cigana in 2018, DOOOM Orchestra is a Padua-based collective of young musicians investigating improvisational practice. "Our Sea Lies Within" concentrates the experience accumulated over six years of study and more than thirty site-specific performances and concerts. A common ocean of sound that materializes thanks to the strong connections between the musicians. 

> C.O.R.N.! - Ona

A duo consisting of the two well-educated but supergrounded improvisational sound wizards Mykyta Prykhodchenko aka Nick Acorne (Electronics) and Patrick Wurzwallner (Drums). “Ona” is the 10th release of the Meta album "UNI C.O.R.N! 2" which consists of 12 live performed albums (one per every month of the year) at different unusual places in Graz. “Ona” was recorded at Butcher's Barbershop, Graz.

> FRANCESCA NAIBO & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – Free Improvisation

Unreleased free improvisation by Francesca Naibo (electric guitar, objects, effects) and Andreij Rublev (no input mixer, live electronics). Recorded inRublev’s home studio in december 2023.

> KAMAL SABRAN & ANDREIJ RUBLEV – No Distance

A free improvisation by Kamal Sabran (sampler, synthesizer) and Andreij Rublev (no-input mixer, live electronics) recorded live on the 23rd of April 2022 at Exp.Sound.Lab, a recording studio in the hills of Treviso's province, Italy.

Kamal Sabran is an artist-researcher based in Malaysia. He has a PhD in Art and Design from the Universiti of Teknologi MARA. He is a teacher at the University of Science Malaysia. Kamal’s practice is collaborative and he frequently pursues opportunities with other artists, musicians, researchers and scientists.

→ Andreij Rublev, aka Andrea Gava, is an Italian musician and producer whose career spans var-ious artistic projects, blending sound experimentation with live performances. With deep knowledge of the underground scene, Rublev is known for his ability to bridge diverse musical cultures, ranging from electronic music to the new frontiers of electroacoustic experimentation.

NJ WEEKENDER SPRING EDITION 2023

È toccato ad Alessia Obino aprire l’edizione primaverile di NJ Weekender Spring Edition, secondo appuntamento infra-stagionale di Novara Jazz. Lo ha fatto con “A Sound of Million Shape” (disco uscito da qualche mese), un indovinato mix di jazz e progressive rock, con un gruppo nutrito di musicisti e un piccolo coro. Subito a suo agio sia con composizioni sue, sia con alcuni brani di un vero guru dello spiritual jazz ovvero Sun Ra, dal quale Alessia Obino sembra di aver preso qualcosa di più di una semplice ispirazione, ma piuttosto un modo di concepire la musica (e il jazz). Tra i componenti della band un vigoroso Piero Bittolo Bon al sax e la contrabbassista Rosa Brunello, bravissima anche al basso elettrico. Sullo stesso palco, anzi nello stesso spazio, la “Sala Performing” di Nòva, poco più tardi si scatena un tornado di potenza musicale di rara intensità: si tratta del quartetto guidato dal pianista Pat Thomas e dedicato a Ahmes Malik, contrabbassista sudanese e rappresentante di spicco del filone mediorientale del jazz. La formazione vede un concentratissimo Antonin Gerbal alla batteria, Joel Gripal contrabbasso double bass, uno straordinario Seymour Wright al sax alto e Pat Thomas al piano. Un’ora di potenza assoluta, modulata su canoni diversi e lievemente mutanti. Insieme allo straordinario concerto di Marco Ribot (di cui ho già scritto), questo è certamente il set più interessante di tutto Nj Weekender Spring Edition 2023. I concerti della domenica si aprono con l’originale ensemble “Al Doum & The Faryds”, sulle ali dell’etno jazz di piacevolissima fattura, ma forse con ritmi un po’ monocordi, molto simili tra loro. Originali nei costumi e nella performance e apprezzati dal pubblico più giovane. Chiude l’ultima giornata del weekend musicale, la “Raphabdomantic Orchestra” di Manuel Volpe, formazione che ha reclutato nelle sue fila la cantante colombiana Maria Mallol Moya che, oltre ad aver portato con sé una gran voglia di dimenarsi e cercare di far ballare a tutti i costi il pubblico più giovane, non mi sembra proprio indimenticabile dal punto di vista vocale. Non va però dimenticato che durante la due giorni di concerti, dopo aver ascoltato un compositore del calibro di Marc Ribot, tutto il resto rischia inevitabilmente di sembrare sotto tono. Hanno completato il programma diversi D-Set, come quelli di Catu Diosis, Lorenzo Morresi e Beat Machine Records, Vittorio Barabino e Angie BacktoMono. Lo spazio Nòva è una bellissima realtà locale che però sembra più adatta, sia per concezione che per proposte ad un pubblico più giovane degli affezionati frequentatori di Novara Jazz. Arrivederci quindi alla XX Edizione del Festival in programma nei due weekend compresi tra il primo e l’undici giugno prossimi.

Lisa Mezzacappa is a San Francisco Bay Area-based bassist, bandleader, composer, curator and producer. An active collaborator in the Bay Area music community for more than a dozen years, she leads her own groups Bait & Switch, the Interlopers, Nightshade, Eartheaters and the Lisa Mezzacappa Trio, and co-leads the ensembles BODABODA, duo B., Cylinder, the Mezzacappa-Phillips Duo, and the Caribbean folk band Les Gwan Jupons. Lisa has released her music on the Clean Feed, NoBusiness, Leo, NotTwo, Evander, Odd Shaped Case and Edgetone record labels, and has recorded as a sideperson for the Tzadik, Kadima and Porto Franco labels. She collaborates frequently on cross-disciplinary projects in sound installation, film/video, sculpture and public music/art. As curator, she programs the annual JazzPOP concert seres at the UCLA Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, now in its 10th year; and a live cinema series, Mission Eye and Ear, at Artists' Television Access. She founded the Monday Makeout creative music series in the Mission District of San Francisco, and programs the Best Coast Jazz Composers series as a member of the artistic committee San Francisco's Center for New Music. In 2012 she started the "Festival-of-Us," a semi-annual festival celebrating Bay Area creative jazz and improvised music. Recent projects include an avant-folk string band, the Interlopers; Eartheaters, a trio with Brooklyn vocalist Fay Victor; and BODABODA, a cross-planetary collaboration with Venice reed player/composer Piero Bittolo Bon. In fall 2015 she premieres Glorious Ravage, a multi-media song cycle for large ensemble with commissioned films, inspired by the writings of Victorian lady adventurers. Lisa has been artist-in-residence at Djerassi Resident Artists Program (2008, 2013), Headlands Center for the Arts (2006, 2015), the Banff International Jazz Workshop (2000), and the Painted Bride Arts Center (2000). Astral Travel - If You Say You Are From This Planet, Why Do You Treat It Like You Do? - Dwight Trible & Tommaso Cappellato together!

Inspired by the poetry of Sun Ra inscribed within the pages of the book “This Planet Is Doomed”, the music and lyrics focus on the current consciousness of the planet, raising questions and issues of humanity’s collective spiritual direction. The body of work contained in this album is the result of numerous live-in-studio improvisations, deconstructed in a meticulous post-production process by avant-garde electronic producer Rabih Beaini. Vocalists Dwight Trible and Camilla Battaglia sing and declaim the poems, which are enveloped in a spontaneous musical magma. Each piece is collectively created by Tommaso Cappellato on drums along with pianist Fabrizio Puglisi, reeds player Piero Bittolo Bon, who also contributes to the electronic soundscape, and double bassist Marco Privato. The purpose of this work is to find questions and raise answers; challenging ourselves to visualize what is difficult to imagine and to deconstruct our set beliefs in exchange for something more all-encompassing. We hope this work will stimulate the listener’s mind, imagination and ears.
