Why do you think Jean and Pieck work well as a couple? (srs)

I know you have a fic of it but I'm curious about your direct take.

Oooo I’m definitely not the first person who has said this but a lot of the appeal with Jean x Pieck lies with the post-canon potential between the two of them as opposed to scenes that you directly see in the manga/anime!

Jean and Pieck are both shown to be incredibly pragmatic, level-headed, and loyal characters, (where their loyalty primarily lies with people as opposed to the systems that brought them up. I.e. Pieck saying she doesn’t trust Marley but the people she’s fought with, and Jean telling Reiner that they’re no different from each other, so it’s wrong to judge their actions), and in their few short scenes together, it shows that they immediately read how the other works in a way that they can work together efficiently in a fight. They don’t hold anything against each other for past instances, because right off the bat they both understand that nothing is personal in war, and when they’re finally at a point in the narrative where it’s time to join up, they do so immediately without hesitation.

From a physical standpoint, Jean canonically likes girls with dark hair, and while that in and of itself isn’t enough to say “oh they’re canon because she has black hair”, it does lend to the idea that Pieck may have partially been designed to serve as a potential secondary love interest for Jean, considering that she was originally supposed to be a middle aged man. Even if that change wasn’t intended to open that door, their scene together on Eren’s Titan very clearly pushes a “hey guys this is also a new potential love interest situation so pay attention to these two!!!” Type of agenda that’s really common in this type of storytelling. Pieck herself is portrayed as being inseparable from Porco, who also has a fiery temperament and dirty-blonde hair, and while Porco and Pieck lack the absolutely absurd height difference between her and Jean, we still see her interactions with a male character that has similar traits with Jean. Once Porco dies, Pieck is clearly upset, but then chooses to push forward to fulfill her duty to her fellow warriors (who else in this story chose to follow through to make a difference to honor a comrade that was in one way or another killed because of Reiner???) they’re reflections of the same character traits in different bodies, and they mirror each other incredibly well when they barely even interact onscreen.

But in the parts where they DO interact, I can’t tell you how many shows and movies I’ve seen that have had two side characters that previously didn’t talk much suddenly wind up in a long fight sequence together, and more often than not, it does lead to a character change and emphasized romantic potential by the end of the story. Character blocking in scenes is incredibly important, and when two characters are placed together for a 4-5 minute scene of just the two of them, then the contrast of both their visuals and their personalities is much more noticeable. Then we get into the boat scene, where Pieck is the one to tease Jean about his hair, and he makes just as equally cheeky a response. I do think their time as ambassadors would put them in close quarters very often, and in real life, people fall for each other all the time when they’re together 24/7. I think it was intentional that Pieck was the one to start the banter with Jean to go back on my previous statements, and I think by the end of the story, that’s implied that there’s a good chance the two of them either currently have something going on, or that there’s something that will happen between them eventually. I also like the idea that since they met as adults, and with wildly different life experiences, they could have a lot to learn from each other without years of trauma and baggage that affects their relationship. They’re two entirely separate people that have the potential to become something completely new together as opposed to being together in the shadow of everything that happened to them when they were younger.

Also consider this: incredibly attractive and smug man meets even more attractive and smug woman. Then they have four kids.

The walk back to his home was solemn and heavy, although his companions held the façade that everything was ordinary. The air around him was still chilly, although the wind that blew by him didn't faze the young man anymore. He felt hot, too warm for his liking, as he continued to walk to his home. He didn't retrieve his jacket, keeping it in your possession; although, now it felt like a grave mistake. The emotions that flooded him made him sick, the thought of having to see you again making his stomach do flips. 

"You saw their face when he said that, right?" Pieck whispered to Zeke, hoping that the young blonde whom walked in front of them wouldn't hear. But he did, he heard every word of the conversation that the two held, ignoring it to the best of his ability. "When he said it wasn't a date?"

"Yeah," he heard Zeke reply quietly. "Watching them force themselves to say they were just friends hurt to watch." Porco took a silent deep breath as he listened to the two talk behind him, anger bubbling up inside him at ever word. He felt angry he couldn't keep the new emotion in line, angry that Pieck and Zeke talked about him so comfortably, and angry that he didn't know how to express himself. Anger was the only emotion he knew was real, all others were ones he couldn't control or pushed aside. "I'm afraid he'll end up pushing them away if he keeps it up." 

Zeke's words struck a cord in the young man, whipping around to face him suddenly. "You shut your fucking mouth Yeager! None of what I do concerns you!" He yelled, surprising both Pieck and Zeke himself. The young blonde breathed heavily, anger consuming his every fiber as he looked the man before him in the eye. "I shouldn't have told you a damn thing, maybe me saying that wouldn't have happened! But you don't know how to keep you mouth shut, do you?" 

"It was just a question, Porco," the man said gently. However, he took a step forward while Pieck took a step back; she was unable to decipher where the altercation was going and decided it was best to hang back. The irritated young man took the step forward as a sign of challenge, fueling his anger even more. 

"No it wasn't! You started something that I didn't want to!" He began, taking a step forward just as Zeke had done, now having to look up at the man. "I didn't want to tell them anything yet, I just found out I loved them last night, dammit! And now you've gone and fucked it up, Yeager! I wanted to wait!" He yelled, shoving the male that tried to take another step closer to him. 

"You don't have time to wait, Galliard!" Zeke replied, gaining his balance from the young man's shove. He didn't want the altercation to proceed any further, although Porco already put his elder in his sights. "You're about to be in a war! A war, Porco! Trust me when I say you don't have the time to just wait around! Those thirteen years aren't granted you could die tomorrow! And they wouldn't have a clue how you felt about them!"

"Shut up!" Upon his words, the young man reared back his fist and swung at the man. His fist colliding with his jaw, a sickly cracking emitting in the air after the blow. Out of breath, Porco watched as Zeke lost his balance, walking backward and holding his jaw before regaining himself. Blood dripped from his mouth as he stood still, leaning over slightly to not get blood on himself. Porco could feel the sting in his knuckles, he didn't have to look to know they were cut and already bruising. 

Zeke was never one to resort to violence outside of his Titan form; although strong, he didn't see the point in fighting as human when he had the capability of a god. However, the arrogant young man who stood in front of him, who knew nothing about time and how precious life was, angered him. He took a step forward once more, spitting out the blood that pooled in his mouth before swinging at Porco. 

Pieck stood in horror at the scene that played out before her, her two closest friends now duking it out in the street. The woman didn't have the strength the two men did, nor was she skilled at maneuvering bipedal anymore - not enough to break up a full blown brawl. Her mind raced before she looked over her shoulder, the only option she could think of was to go and retrieve you. If you could get Porco, she could handle Zeke. The woman was quick to run back to your home, her fist colliding with the door repeatedly with urgency. "(Y/n)! Come on open up!" She yelled before the door was swung open. 

Grabbing your wrist, she pulled you from the doorway. Without explanation you were left clueless until you heard the commotion that went on just a few meters away. You sucked in a breath at the fight, heartbroken and angered by the two men breaking themselves in the street. You heard Pieck tell you she would get Zeke but you could only stand in shock at what you were seeing. It felt as if the earth slowed down in that moment, watching Pieck run to Zeke and begin pulling at the back of his jacket only to be completely ignored. You saw a pain in Porco's eyes that you've seen before. The pain of not being good enough, similar to what you saw the day he wasn't chosen for the Armor. 

You snapped out of your daze, only to feel an anger inside that was foreign. It was hot, an almost blue flame that suddenly lit within, directed at Porco. Anger from the fight you were witnessing, anger from the conversation prior, anger from unrequited love, and anger that festered and boiled over for years from the man who thought he'd never be good enough. You moved towards the two men without a word, anger and disappointment too much to utter anything. Grabbing the back of Porco's shirt, you pulled back roughly. Yanking him to the ground while making a small tear in the shirt he wore. 

"What the hell are you doing?" You asked, his eyes flickering to you and widening. He felt his anger towards Zeke vanish and the feeling of fear take its place. "I asked you a question Galliard, what the hell do you think you're doing?" You repeated, casting your gaze downward to look at the beaten young man. The blonde panted and wheezed for air as he looked at you, wiping the sweat and blood from his eyes and forehead. He was at a loss for words, unable to think a single coherent thought as he gazed up at you. The use of his last name made his spirits crumble before him, watching the glass castle he built for himself crack and shatter before him.

"What the hell has gotten into you?" You yelled, causing him to flinch at the sudden tone of your voice. Pieck and Zeke backed away slightly, hoping to give the both of you space and to not be involved. "I've had my fair share of breaking you and Reiner up, but Zeke? He's your friend! Have you lost your mind?" He tried to speak, to voice his explanation, but was quickly cut off. "I'm not done, so shut up and listen well. When I told you to be safe I meant all the time, not just when you felt like it! I don't care if it's just Zeke this time, but what about next time? Who are you going to fly off the handle with next? A Marleyan? The people who want to go to war with us? What about an island devil? If you keep doing shit like this you'll get yourself killed, Porco! Then what about those thirteen years you promised me?"

Your voice started to crack as you yelled, not noticing how worked up and upset you had gotten yourself. Porco sat in shock, his eyes wide as he listened to you slowly become more and more upset with every word. He watched as tears started to slip down your cheeks, knowing nothing he could do in the moment would ease you. He hadn't a clue that you were holding in so much emotion, wondering how far it went back and how he didn't realize until it was too late. "And that stupid, drunken statement of marrying me! What will happen to that if you die?" You didn't mean for the words to pass your lips, but you didn't feel regret once it did. Although the statement now put your heart on your sleeve, you were in no state to care.

His breath hitched in his throat, your words ringing in his ears and repeating over and over. Marrying him. As the thought turned in his head his eyes met with yours, now red and teary as you cried. You were distraught over the possibility of him dying, not only losing a close friend but hopeful lover. "You can't keep doing this," he heard you whisper. "It scares me to think what would happen to you if you provoke the wrong person. I can't marry a dead man, Porco."

"You can't marry a dead man," he repeated softly. He tried desperately to remember the moment he spoke of marriage with you, but to no avail, his drunken stupor being too much for him to remember a thing. You can't marry a dead man. Such a small sentence held such an impact on the young man. The pit that formed in his stomach easing, but a wave of emotion hitting him in result. Grey eyes soon became glassy, tears fogging his vision from looking at you. "You won't marry a dead man," he whispered, clinging to every word he spoke.

The tears that pooled in his eyes soon fell, slipping down his pale cheeks mixing with blood and sweat. He reached out his hand slowly, his palm facing up, as if to ask you to take it. His hand was bloody as well, the knuckles cut and skin broken, but the trickle of steam emitting would soon heal his wounds. You won't marry a dead man. There was a pang in your heart at his words - an idea you've waited years to unfold. Every wall you had built in place against the feelings for the young man crumbling away; it crashed easily with his words.

Looking at Porco's hand through teary eyes, you let out a breath. You were still angry, a small part of you wanting to smack his hand away. Thinking if you condoned the actions he committed by embracing him it would only lead to his self destruction. But this was the only chance you had. Gently placing your hand in his own, you felt him tighten his grip against your fingers. His hold wasn't rough nor was it gentle, holding your hand so you wouldn't ever slip away - strong but caring. Pulling gently against it, but tightening your grip, you coaxed him to stand.

The young man shifted his weight to push himself up with his free hand, and slowly stood up. Even through the healing cuts and bruises on his features, you still were able to see the same Porco you had always known. Not the honorary Marleyan, not the Jaw titan, not the Eldian, but Porco. The gentle, confused, firecracker of a boy you fell in love with from the start. As he looked at you he noticed what had been in front of him all this time. The impossible love you gave went back years before he ever realized. The looks, the actions, the smiles, the small pauses. Everything eluded to such but he was too naive to see.

He gave a gentle squeeze to your hand, staying in place as his lips turned to a smile. A genuine smile that felt real to even him, the true feeling of happiness he couldn't understand for some time until this moment. His tears slowed but didn't cease, now dripping periodically down his cheeks. "I swear," he began, "you won't marry a dead man."
