Kelly Clarkson:  All About Staying True To Herself

Most artist today get caught up in the business side of music, worried about sales and the theatrics of a performance rather than the music itself. Unlike her colleagues, Kelly Clarkson can preform barefoot on stage and act like she is just singing in the shower. Throughout preforming, Clarkson presents herself as inviting, friendly, and selfless.

On July 14, 2015 I was given the opportunity to preform on Kelly Clarkson’s stage during her set list – if this doesn’t show how unselfish she is then I don’t know what will.  The venue for her show was the PNC Arts Center, and everyone in the audience that night could see how far she has come since her “American Idol” days 11 years ago. Her set started off with “Dance With Me”, an upbeat song off of her newest album. Clarkson is all about the music and not all the “fluff” that comes with preforming. So naturally she came out on stage jumping barefoot! She opened the concert making the us all feel comfortable and ready for a fun night. 

The next few songs where throwbacks from her past albums, dating back a decade. Once her band began to play the introduction music for “Breakaway” the crowd exploded, thinking about what there lives were like when they first heard this song back in the “American Idol days”. During the song, Clarkson forgot some of her lyrics, and laughed it off as the audience carried the song along. This just reminds us that Kelly is a normal person herself, with a memory that slowly goes with age. But of course she hit those high notes during the chorus and even got a little creative with how she sang the verses.

 A few songs later she sang a fan request cover, “Love Me Like You Do”, where someone from the crowd picks the song she will sing through twitter. Therefore, she only found out she was covering this song a few hours before the show. Clarkson’s acoustic, stripped down version of this radio hit, silenced the audience.  She proved that artists don’t need crazy instruments, back up dancers, and props to “Wow” the crowd – rather just a one-of-a-kind voice. 

Next up, the open mic winners – me and my brother. Every night Kelly gives a fan, whom she picks from video submissions, a chance to have their voice heard in front of thousands. Not only was that the best night of my life, but I got to see what a day on tour is like for Kelly. When I was talking to her backstage, it felt like I was talking to a friend I had known for years because she was so inviting, and helped calm our nerves. What other artist would take away a song from their setlist, and instead let an unknown artist sing? Right before we preformed, she encouraged the crowd to show us respect, especially because she knows that getting up on stage (for the first time) is not easy. After our performance she even took a selfie with us on stage! By far the most down-to-earth person I have ever met. Her selflessness is what attracts fans from all ages, and of course her charm and strong vocals. 

After a few more upbeat songs, she slowed the night down with a song that really connects with her fans, “Piece by Piece”. It is also her lead single and the title of her newest title. This song is as real as it gets, and her emotions really showed through the performance. Before the song Clarkson explained, “Sometimes we don’t get great dads, or good dads, or present dads…But that’s alright things happen.” Her father was not present in her life, and the song goes through the divorce her parents went through and how that difficult time affected her life. The lyrics in the song are encouraging and her performance was powerful – especially towards the end of the song when she goes on high vocal runs. By the end of the song she made her audience feel confident, giving the message that life gets better and that you will meet a person that will be great, fixing your heart “piece by piece”. 

The concert hasn’t ended and Kelly has made the crowd feel happy, sad, energetic, tearful, sassy, and more. She ended her show with every teenage girls anthem in the early 2000’s, “ Since You’ve Been Gone”. By the end of the night everyone walked out thinking the same thing, “Why isn’t the media ever talking about how amazing her voice is?!” She isn’t on the covers of tabloids, or on award shows, or on t.v., yet she still continues to inspire and empower millions. Clarkson was so authentic on stage, cracking jokes from the beginning to the end. She showed her fans her true personality. Her vocals at this concert were so captivating and uplifting, which explains the connection she had with the audience. Artists today should be learning from Kelly by not getting wrapped up in Hollywood or the business of the music industry. Instead, artists should be down-to-earth and authentic with their fans. Her concert proved that she can do just that, and still “make it in the industry”. In the end the music is the only thing that matters, and Kelly delivered for all her Jersey fans!
