Can you show us your favorite plant and Jonathan's favorite plant?
one thing about me is i'll take any opportunity to nerd out about plants. of course!
i'm in my philodendron and anthurium era at the moment and i think this philo tortum is my favorite. it's easy, rewarding, and i LOVE watching the leaves unfurl. can't wait for this girl to grow big! if you asked me this a week or so ago i would have said my anthurium magnificum (pictured below), but she is being a diva right now and has some browning on her leaves so she's gonna have to settle for second place today.

@fell-contract is definitely a cacti girl (and admittedly has piqued my interest in them over the last couple years). his fav is this grafted cactus we got earlier this year!

and a special shoutout to my new thai con i got for a steal this weekend!

tldr scroll down to see my new plants.
this is a departure from my usual posts, it's a bit more like hybrid blog/diary entry, idk, but here u go.
for those of y'all who don't know, one of my hobbies is plants. i like to collect them propagate them, trade them, etc. and my favorite type of plant is aroids, particularly philodendrons. it was a very difficult hobby to maintain after the plant boom during lockdown caused plant prices to skyrocket, so for the past year or two i haven't relaly been buying that many new plants, and when i have it's just been from garden centers or local nurseries.
yesterday, however, i went to an aroid show where there was a vendor from south america who had brought a bunch of specimens people could purchase. they're a family owned business that focuses on protection and preservation of biodiversity and native plant species, and all their plants are ethically sourced, usually grown in their own greenhouses from propagations instead of taking them from their natural habitat and selling them. so obviously i had to check them out.
but this is where i sort of pause while writing this post, because i get really nervous talking about spending money, especially on here. i've frequently asked for help when i needed assistance getting my account out of the red or paying late rent, so part of me feels like it would be insulting to post about things i spend money on that aren't the essentials. but my plants make me happy. they give me something to take care of. they brighten up my apartment. they give me something to be excited about. so i'm just gonna tell you about my new plants.
about a month ago when i left my old church job, they gave me a gift card that the choir had pitched in for. i couldn't get cash out, use it for rent, or transfer it to my bank account, so i decided it would be my hobby fund. when i found out about the aroid show, i set aside a portion of that fund for plants because i knew that the specimens at the show would be significantly less expensive than anything i could find online or in local shops, and it might be one of the only chances i would ever have to actually buy some of my wishlist plants.
Tumblr media
this is a philodendron esmeraldense. this is what they look like when the leaves get bigger and more mature. this is one i hadn't seen before so it wasn't on my wishlist, but when i was checking the vendors' stock last week i loved how it looked. i'm gonna put it on a moss pole and let it climb. the leaves probably won't ever get as big as the one in the linked photo, but i'm still excited to watch it grow.
Tumblr media
this is a terrible picture but this is a philodendron patriciae. they get super long. this one’s putting out like two new leaves. it’s also a climber. the ripples in the leaves get more intense as it matures, so paired with the very long leaves it looks so cool. i can't wait to grow this one bigger.
Tumblr media
philodendron pastazanum. it’s a crawler so i’ll be getting a window box to put it in so it has space to grow across the substrate. this has been on my list for a while but i couldn’t find it anywhere. the big heart leaves are just gorgeous.
Tumblr media
this is a philodendron melanochrysum. the leaves can get huge. technically i already have a smaller one, but this one was just so gorgeous. i will probably end up planting them together on one moss pole. it’s one of my favorite plants, i am a sucker for velvety leaves. you can see one of the older leaves is getting ready to drop, and i think i'm going to try to make a project out of it.
Tumblr media
philodendron tortum. it feels like the kind of plant that would have been growing while the dinos were around. it's very reminiscent of a fern, but it is also a climber. i had one like two years ago but i had to sell it to pay some bills, so i'm happy to have it back in my collection.
Tumblr media
the one in the center. anthurium veitchii, or king anthurium. this one was kind of an impulse buy. i don’t usually do anthurium but it was cheap and looked incredibly cool. they look even cooler when they get mature.
Tumblr media
what is a king without his queen. anthurium warocqueanum, or queen anthurium. i wasn't sure if i wanted to tackle this one bc it's notoriously hard to take care of, but it was very cheap so i took the plunge. these also get super long, and the velvety shiny leaves are so pretty.
Tumblr media
monstera obliqua peru. this was a unicorn plant. it is difficult to find in the wild, grows slowly, and is hard to propagate, so it was mostly just passed from collector to collector until the plant boom during covid. nodes of this plant, literally just bits of stem you would cross your fingers and hope would root and grow leaves, were going for a thousand dollars and a single leaf up to three thousand dollars a year or two ago. and now i have a very full plant for only forty bucks. 2020 me is screaming. this specimen looks a little squished from the trek from south america to the midwest, but when it acclimates to its new environment, it's going to look so cool. this is another plant that has dino vibes.
Tumblr media
and finally the grand finale. philodendron spiritus sancti. i honestly can't believe i'm typing this. this plant is considered to be one of the rarest philodendrons in the world - if not the rarest. it only grows in one place, and there are reportedly only 10 known plants left in the wild because of a combination of poaching and the excessive clearing of their habitat. it was another one that pretty much only existed in high level (wealthy) collections for a very long time. now, more specimens of this plant exist in private collections than in the wild, which makes ownership of this plant very emotional for me. this is a plant that was going for upwards of $14k for large specimens at the height of the plant boom. people were scrambling to get their hands on that one plant that no one could get, the highest prize, a bragging point. no one cared if they were getting it ethically. someone even stole a cutting from a botanical garden just to sell it.
this plant was not on my wishlist because i never thought i would even get to see in person, let alone hold, let alone own. and yet yesterday i picked it up, held it in my hands, saw the two digit price tag, and decided yeah. i think it's only fair that the money a bunch of presbyterians gave me should go to adding a plant called a "spiritus sancti" to my jewish plant collection.
it still doesn't feel real. i can just look over at my plant cabinet, and there it is. a spiritus sancti. bc for me it was never about having a big name plant in my collection. it was never about bragging or showing off or just checking names off a list of things i was supposed to want if i was into houseplants. this plant still exists because botanists and aroid enthusiasts have worked tirelessly to conserve it. and having this little piece of history and the world in my little plant cabinet feels more like a responsibility to me than a prize.
so yeah. those are my new plants. i'm excited to see them grow and still a little starstruck that i was even able to bring home the last two.

Sometimes you have an idea and then five hours later you're blinking at the canvas in front of you wondering where you banged out all these pictures from.
Anyway, have some NPCs, flowers, and their associated Lightbringer.
Clarine (+ Brynne): Queen of the Night - Enjoy small moments because they do not last. Yuasa (+ Kithri): Anthurium - hospitality, happiness, abundance. Tathdax (+ Io): Mourningbride - unfortunate attachment; I have lost all. Rolen (+ Theran): Pasqueflower - you have no claims. Narcissus - unrequited love, selfishness.

Accidental demon summoning mixed with reincarnation
After the spouses die in the regency era, the bridgertons lose their minds, commit crimes against those they blame for the deaths (maybe the spouses were murdered or had accidents and died young) so when the bridgertons finally died they became demons.
Now fast forward a few hundred years and the spouses are reincarnated. Philip's twin decide to pull a prank with an old book on summoning demons. And then wind up actually summoning a demon when their father accidently gets a paper cut..... "But why is the demon lady being nice to us and why is she hitting on our dad?"
Cue the others being summoned because they forgot to put the book up
The title will be How Demons Became Our New Family.
I can see this going in a few directions, but my favorite would be the one where it's almost treated like romantic comedy with some slice of life.
Oliver and Amanda didn't mean to summon the demon lady. But Aunt Penelope's old book was so pretty, and it could have been a fun game! Besides, the book said you needed blood to make the contract with the demon, and they knew their dad would be disappointed with them if they cut themselves on purpose.
They set everything else up from the circle to lay out some flowers from their dad's greenhouse. Anthurium for hospitality, dahlias for lasting bonds, protea for change, and the last flower was their choice according to the book. The book says it helps when determining what demon you'll summon. Amanda added bleeding hearts. They were pretty, and her father said they represent lost love and new beginnings.
Phillip came in at some point and played along with his kids. They sat together reading the book, the kids being dramatic in their reading. Just as Phillip was about to flip the page, he accidently gave himself a papercut. On his way to the bathroom, Phillip didn't notice a drop spilled on the circle his kids made. He didn't see the circle glow, nor how the twins watched stun.
What he did see when he got back was some random woman hugging his children. That same woman who immediately threw herself on him when he pulled the twins away.
So the lady's name was Eloise and she's actually a demon they summoned with their dad's blood.
Eloise confused the twins. For a demon, she was really nice and weird. She would help them with pranks, but she also kept hitting on their dad. She always had to be touching him or one of the twins. She also wouldn't let them touch the summoning circle.
"Where did you get this book anyway?" Eloise asked them one day.
"We borrowed it from Aunt Penelope." Aka their aunt had no idea they had it.
Eloise froze. "You're aunt Penelope?"
The twins pointed at the shelf they asked Phillip to put pictures of their family. None of their aunts and uncles were their biological aunts and uncles, but their dad loved them like family. So they were the twins' family too.
On the shelf were pictures of their uncles, Simon, Michael, and Gareth. There were also pictures of their aunts, Kate, Sophie, Penelope, and Lucy.
Eloise looked amazed at the photos. "They're all alive and know each other," she whispered to herself.
Not long after was their family's once a month meet-up.
The twins didn't see Eloise all day, which was weird. Well, not until their aunts and uncles were all looking over the summoning circle that was still on the floor. Eloise showed up next to their dad and she was grinning.
Eloise snapped her fingers and the glasses their aunts and uncles were holding all shattered and cut their hands.
Seven more demons showed up in the circle and they were just as clingy to their aunts and uncles as Eloise was to their dad.

DSoL AU Aesthetics #2 - Little Angel
Angel's favourite toys to play with: Puppets! She adores animal puppets, but also isn't antipathetic towards other silly and colourful puppets. The sillier, the better!
Tumblr media
Angel lost her parents shortly after she was born. She got adopted by her Stepfather, Christopher, who raises her as a single parent. Since he's a photographer, she often travels with him around the world and also learns how to shoot her own pictures.
Tumblr media
The flower I associate Angel with is the Anthurium. It symbolises provocative exotica and its bright colours stand for Power, Self-Confidence and Bravery.
Tumblr media
If Angel was a kitty, she'd look like this. She's be a very playful kitty who opens up to people and other cats rather quickly. While she's very silly at times, she's very independent and knows how to take care of herself.

A Trip to the Botanical Gardens: Part 5
Ok, I finally have enough brainpower to work on this post! This next entry is about my trip into both conservatories at the botanical gardens!
Tumblr media
In this picture, towards the bottom, or the orange hanging blossoms of Antirrhinum majus, or the Solstice(TM) Orange Tricolor Snapdragon! These blossoms are a pinkish shade of orange and yellow, like a bright sunrise... or maybe sherbet.... Mmm, delicious. Abode, to the upper left of these blossoms is a single yellow flower, of which I do not know its name.
Tumblr media
This picture is of several Anthurium or "Flamingo Flower". It's a plant from the arum family. I guess you could say that it looks like a.... deep wine-red peace lily? There's one Solstice Snapdragon bloom peeking out underneath the Flamingo Flower... I did say these were "everywhere" in here, didn't I? lol
Tumblr media
This picture is of several stalks with clusters of beautiful purple flowers! Think like hyacinths, except a deeper, royal purple color, with long trumpet-shaped blooms. This plant is called Salvia splendens, or Scarlet Sage. They're normally red, but this variety is "Lighthouse Purple" Behind all these purple flowers are more of those Solstice snapdragons!
Tumblr media
And... what are theeese?? Another bunch of purple flowers?! That ARE NOT VIOLETS? These are tiny light pinkish purple flowers with 5 petals and yellow centers. They are Primula malacoides, or "Fairy Primrose". There's many of these tiny flowers in this photo, though it's hard to really determine their size just from the photo.
Tumblr media
Sitting in a pot in this photo is the majestic curved form of an orchid! It curves outwards and towards the right side of the frame. This deep reddish-purple group of about 7 or 8 flowers is labeled Cybidium orchid, "Girl Crazy" x "Regal Ruby" hybrid.
Tumblr media
This pot is another orchid! Tall slender green leaves poke out from the top of the pot, while three long stems heavy with many tiny yellow orchid flowers spill out, framing a pot of pansies on the ground. This is Cybidium Fifi, called "Harry", according to its sign. No, I don't know why, either. (You can see a small orange tree in the background, to the right! The fruits are at varying stages of development, and they are very tiny. The fruits are not for eating.)
Tumblr media
In this picture, is a tall plant with speckled-yellow-and-green leaves and pale orange bell-shaped flowers. It's called Abutilon pictum or Flowering Maple. This is the "Thompsonii" cultivar.
Tumblr media
In this picture is a strange, tall plant with large slender green leaves and red flowers that looked like flaming red cups, with a dark purple part growing from within them! This plant is called Pavonia multiflora, or the "Brazilian Candle Plant". I suppose the flowers do look like flames, don't they?
Tumblr media
Here's a close-up of those flowers! They are long, slender reddish-purple petal-like things with points at the end, that grow upwards in a shape like a cup, or are reminiscent of a flame. There's a dark purple growth in the middle that opens up to a soft reddish inflorescence with absolutely tiny light grape-purple flowers! I struggled to take a good picture of these.
Tumblr media
And in this picture are.... More of those Solstice snapdragons! The yellow trumpet-shaped blooms I don't know the name of! And lots, and lots, and lots of tiny clusters of pale lavender blooms! Are they some kind of violet? I do not know...
Tumblr media
It's a plant that's nothing but leaves! Ornamental leaves! Large emerald-green leaves patterned with bright orange and yellow veins and edges. This is Codiaeum variegatum, var. pictum... Or "Croton".
Tumblr media
In this picture, at first glance, it's a bunch of leaves on a short plant, but upon closer inspection, you can see tall spikes with long slim tube-like purple flowers that grow outwards. This plant is Plectranthus neochilus, or a Lobster Plant. This one is called "Mike's Fuzzy Wuzzy". Make of that what you will.
Whew! That's it for Part 5! I'll add more pictures in my next post, whenever I manage to put that one up. I have a few more pictures from the conservatory to share, which I've missed in this pose, so consider the next post to be like... 5.5 or something. lol
See my previous post here, in Part 4!

Anthurium andraeanum ‘red’: Many new leaves revealing themselves this week! It’s been a couple weeks since these plants received their first fertilization of the spring. I’m trying homemade fertilizers this year in order to save money and repurpose some food waste. So far it seems to be going well. The new leaves pictured are from three of my Laceleaf plants. Others have sprouted new leaves over the last couple weeks, but this is the most I’ve had at one time:)
Still waiting for a spathe. The weather has been cloudy for about 10 days straight and seems like that will double before we get a sunny day again. But, it’s still early in the season so there is still hope!
