I keep thinking about how kind of mean and hopeless the Harry Potter books were in worldbuilding

Harry Potter is set up to be poor and miserable and have nothing, and to have all of that "corrected" by finding out he's a wizard and his family is rich and he'll never want for anything again

Ron Weasley is set up to be poor and miserable and have nothing and suffer forever for it

Like, I grew up in the extinct middle class that was between lower-middle and upper-middle, just middle-middle, but it was an economically depressed town in an economically depressed state, and my economically depressed friend fucking HATED Ron

I also hated Ron, everyone hated Ron, but it was more the past few days I've really been thinking about the difference, that if you're poor, you get to be poor as a wizard, you get this representation but it's as The Ron, and for the entire time that the audience is supposed to be going along with Harry on this new, magical journey...your MC role is to be *nice* to poor people as your defining characteristic of this dynamic, because oh, look, being poor sucks ASS and everyone will hate you and make fun of you.

JKR just...didn't worldbuild for shit. Like, she made all these pretty, silly, wacky things, but under the cozy Wonka-esque trappings of "oh what a lovely place I wish I could live there", life is unreasonably hard and unreasonably unfair for an Earth where magic is real.

G.R.R. Martin once planned to have a time skip in between each chapter of the books, but discarded it because it would require large amounts of flashbacks and expositions to get the audience up to speed. Boy, it sure is great that YJ only had one season so we didn't have to worry about each sequential season having to allocate precious episode time to explain what happen in the gaps while also developing new characters and plot lines /s

Sadly I cannot speak to or for Mister George Raymond Richard Martin's storytelling as I managed to miss the boat on both ASOIAF as a book series and Game of Thrones as a TV phenomenon. However, it certainly seems like he made the right decision there. Smart man.

As for the Young Justice Animated series... I can only agree. While I would have loved to see a continuation of the mystery, and think there was a lot of potential in the original cast of heroes and interesting things they could have done with The Light, I'm glad that DC made the call to cancel the show and move on to new projects when it became clear that the tone and themes didn't fit with their brand-pivot to New 52 edginess, rather than trying to forcibly crush the series into an incompatible mold for use as a marketing vessel.

Plus, the more complaints I've heard from other franchises about what happens when you leave Greg Weisman creatively unsupervised, the more likely it is that we would have just been in for a bad-fanfic barrage of random new characters, arbitrary time-skips, jumbled perspective-hopping, attempted twitter-retcons and general throwing-ideas-at-a-wall that he seems to use in place of actually learning basic narrative techniques like developing a story arc, maintaining character consistency or creating proper causal links between concepts, all seasoned with a heaping helping of Joss-Whedon-inspired performative virtue-signalling, creepy rape-y garbage and fetishistic sexism. Bullet dodged, methinks. Our city now.

There is one notable exception (although it depends on your region and the individual stores) and that is clean but damaged pure cotton. Ideally jersey, but woven can be acceptable. T-shirt fabric, basically, but only if those t-shirts aren't polyester. A lot of charity stores/thrift/op shops in my area will collect big bags of damaged t-shirt fabric to sell as rags. Your local mechanic etc will go buy a few bags of t-shirt rags every so often. Doesn't matter if it's damaged or ugly because it's literally going to get cut up and used to mop up motor oil. But again, make sure that this is something the specific shop in question actually does before you donate your shirt with a big hole in the armpit!

maybe if there’s a button missing or little holes or stains, but stop using thrift stores as your garbage. the amount of actual trash we get donated at my job is ridiculous. one man’s trash is another man’s treasure like 20% of the time. but chances are if you didn’t want to fix it yourself, neither will anyone else.

quality too. if you would not buy shein from the thrift store yourself, don’t donate your “cute summer shein hauls :33” that you don’t wear anymore because the trend ended. nobody buys shein second-hand, and it sits on our shelves until we have to throw it out.
