before we wrap up on tng cast i want data and geordi to say i love you to each other. as much as they’ve already said it in other words i want to hear the magic words. and not in a bro way. in the emotional way they’ve already established. and not in any unnecessarily dramatic dying confession. i’m not gonna watch data die for the 3rd time and also no need to kill anyone else off either.

birth control thoughts for trek

Beverly Crusher is a genius and an incredibly competent doctor, how did she get pregnant?

I have thoughts, and a head canon that works for me.

Health overall is so much better that they have very very little infertility. maybe after an accident, or a very severe, rare illness, but the general population is in very good health so people are very fertile.

There are several excellent kinds of birth control that are foolproof. They're turned on and off with a hypo, last for years.

There are several excellent kinds of birth control that are shorter term, a month at a time, perhaps. They are also excellent but wear off quickly when someone doesn't take them. This is so if you have a short part of time to get pregnant, you wouldn't have to wait. Don't take it (or turn it off, there must be a way) and you can get pregnant relatively quickly.

This kind might require both parties taking it. Kasidy Yates got pregnant on DS9 when Ben Sisko didn't take his inhibitor. She took hers (it seems) so some types might take both parties. If Kasidy's in excellent health, and very fertile, and so is Ben, it wouldn't take much.

Abortion is wildly available, safe, accepted, and easily obtained. If you don't want to be pregnant, you don't have to be. Technology is advanced enough that unwanted fertilized eggs can be prevented from implanting, or removed. very easily.

Beverly wants another child. She might, now that she and Jean-Luc are together, be optimistic enough to be taking one of the short time kinds of birth control. Things can be hectic for them (definitely seems like they always are for him). One or both of them makes a mistake, and since they're in excellent health at the time, she gets pregnant.

She'd be able to tell very quickly that the embryo was healthy, that she was healthy, and then she'd make her decision.

This is all me justifying that the plot says that unplanned pregnancies still happen, bit it's a fun world building exercise.

There are also anomalies that denature birth control hypos or passing dark matter that causes replicator malfunctions...plenty of things to come up with. So it's possible. I respect the show as a babyfic that didn't even bother to explain why, it just happened. Neither of them question it.

(which is a whole interesting little bit of character work for them. They maybe weren't being as careful as they told themselves they were being. Maybe this was something they wanted on some level (Beverly, definitely, but I think Jean-Luc too), and couldn't talk about or really admit to each other).

My dude in Prophets they need LESS integration - did the Gamma Serpentis thing teach thou nothing? Let the ships have passcodes, firewalls, blocks. Secret handshakes. In-Jokes. Anything. Full integration and ships 'talking' to each other isn't good.

You know what, let the ships block each other! Maybe the Captain of the USS Brandybrooke has beef with the Captain of the USS Eden Prairie. Is it illogical? Yes. Does it stop federation-destroying information viruses? Also yes.

Complete integration almost destroyed Starfleet before.

(Tone Note: the above is an exasperated joke, as I'm startled that they'd constantly mention Janeway yet ignore the Living Construct/Elephant in the room, along with ignoring the fact that having every single ship connected and 'talking' is just kind of a bad idea.)

Saw the finale of Picard in IMAX & it looked fantastic! The writing, on the other hand, left me....underwhelmed. Also I did not like seeing Nepo baby on the bridge.

Even knowing it takes place beforehand, but with Tendi and Rutherford's technical and scientific skills, combined with Boimler and Mariner's knowledge of Starfleet history and paranoia, the ensigns would have figured out the Dominion/Borg's plot by the 20 minute mark.

(Sincerely hoping that Picard S3 gets skewered in an episode of Lower Decks.)

Picard discussion/theory

SPOILERS through episode 3x08.  I don’t know anybody on tumblr, I’ve no idea where the Picard fandom is, but I’d really like somebody to talk with about the show.  So if you’re out there, please say hi.  Thanks.

Anyway, here’s my theory for what’s going on with Jack...

I think we’re dealing with the Borg again.  Let’s start at the beginning (of S3).

Picard’s log entry about the Borg is playing in the opening scene.  Foreshadowing??

Moving on in no particular order because I can’t remember which ep is which.

Shaw makes sure we all remember Wolf 359 and that PICARD WAS A BORG!

Jack talks with Seven about feeling alone and needing connection.

That voice Jack keeps hearing is kinda Borg Queen vibes.  “Come home... to the collective.”

Jack’s brain thing is happening much younger than Picard’s.  But what if Picard’s brain thing started later... like when he was a Borg!  Now the time frames match up.

Data says Picard’s brain thing was misdiagnosed.  And come on, we all know Jack’s is something else.

Data also said what they wanted Picard’s body for.  Something was in him.  Like Borg nanites.  Something he could have passed along to his son.

Seven is constantly there with her name and her implant by her eye, reminding us of Borg bits left behind and not completely removed.  And do she and Picard feel entirely human again after what happened?  Nope.  (Their discussion in S1 came to mind.) 

The big bad says it’s fitting Seven’s there when she reveals what Jack really is.  Because BORG!

Does he feel guilty for what he is?  He’s hearing voices.  So many voices.  The collective.

Troi also says there’s an ancient voice inside him that isn’t his own.

Why would the Changelings be working with the Borg?  Like Lore said, the enemy of my enemy...

Why can Jack take people over?  It’s a hive thing.  But they’re human.  Well, I’m sure they’ll explain it later.

Jack’s red eyes.  Honestly don’t make a ton of sense either.  But remember every time Locutus looked at the camera and that red laser glare happened next to his eye?  Yeah.

Why is everything fucking red?!  I don’t know!  Because red is a very strong color cinematically??  Also, goddammit, Terry!!
