13/100 days of practice || Oscar Peterson’s Minuet No. 2 after nine takes. This Minuet is one of my favorite exercises so far. CONFESSION TIME: I find social media draining. If possible, I would like to quit it. So what’s this all for, then? Just for show? NOT AT ALL. I believe in the power of consistency and perseverance. Practice makes progress, and we will reap that if we don’t give up. Sometimes, We might not be getting the results we want. That’s fine. We have expectations, and we tend to set them too high. What’s important is getting the progress that we need. No matter how small it is, it’s still progress. I have played more Hanon than Czerny, but many are against his finger exercises. Better pianists than I may be able to weigh in on this controversy.

Jazz piano exercise: play ii-V-Is starting in C major going down in whole steps for every completed ii-V-I progression while playing a walking bass line in the left hand and 3rds and 7ths in the right hand. I took some jazz piano classes back in university as part of the requirement for obtaining a jazz degree, but I felt like I didn’t get as much as I wanted out of the experience. A pianist named Seonyong Hwang plays a Czerny piano exercise at the original speed, with depressingly brilliant results. Watch and see for yourself. Just the number of notes, the sharps and flats, and the speed required makes me feel inadequate to even watch. I admire the work that such pianists put into developing this craft.
