From Saturday’s USkSG Sketchwalk @ Marine Parade Central…
Haven’t been to Marine Parade since the MRT was still being built! 🫣 We used to come here so often when we lived at Meyer Road, and even after we had moved west, we were back here at least weekly for the kids’ piano lessons. So much fond memories for our family from this place.
Glad we could make new memories sketching this place. ✌🏼🥹

CAN I PLEASE HAVE FOR THE HEADCANON THINGIE 🏳️🌈😇🧸👽🎶🦾💝(cant find the emoji but Romantic HEADCANON) for Michelle zuria???
Michelle Zuria sexuality, religion, childhood, weird quirk, music, disability, love language and romantic headcanons.
(You are very lucky because I am very much on my CarmenXMichelle brain worms, rn)
Warning for mentions of childhood neglect, amputation, and spoilers.
Sexuality headcanon: Bisexual
Religion headcanon: Christian, but doesn't do a lot of the typical things like going to church.
Childhood headcanon: She had military parents, so she was moved around a lot as a kid. She did move back to Singapore after university, though.
Weird quirk headcanon: She has a tendency to accidentally sneak up on people. She had very quiet footsteps, and it often scares others.
Music headcanon: She took piano lessons as a kid and is pretty good at it, even today.
Disability headcanon: I already spoke about her PTSD and autism, so I'll talk a bit about her amputation in my AU. In this case, she does use a prosthetic but normally takes it off when she doesn't need it.
Love Language headcanon: Acts of service. She literally defends Carmen in court in my AU.
Romantic headcanon: On dates, she will try to make it last as long as possible, especially when it comes to the first date so she can get to know her lover better.

Teaching Piano Journey
Mark the Start of a New Path :) LVL1
In August 2023, I was presented with an exciting opportunity to start a career in teaching piano. This journey began when I met someone seeking a teacher with skill, patience, and kindness. Eager to embrace the challenge, I decided to take the plunge. My conversation with the previous teacher revolved around the details of the position. She asked about my experience with children, my teaching style, and my background. As this was my first teaching role, doubts began to cloud my mind regarding my abilities. To ease my concerns, the previous teacher kindly offered me the chance to observe one of her lessons. On August 26th, I attended a lesson with a 10-year-old student who was still learning the basics of piano. I understood why the teacher structured a 45-minute piano session, dividing it into a 30-minute practical lesson and a 15-minute theory lesson. I quickly learned that patience and kindness are crucial when teaching children; they often struggle to focus on one task for too long and benefit from engaging, varied activities. As the class concluded, we transitioned into casual conversation, discussing teaching methods, recommended books, and even financial aspects of the teaching market in Singapore. I left with a wealth of valuable insights that will undoubtedly help me as I embark on my own teaching journey.

Key Decisions: Your Guide to Buying Pianos in Singapore
Purchasing a piano is both a thrilling and intimidating process in Singapore as the market leaves enthusiasts with many options at their disposal. With this, describe the key elements to consider when buying a piano in Singapore to ensure that purchasers make an informed choice that aligns with their needs and wants.
1. Determining Your Budget
Set a reasonable budget before exploring Singapore's piano market. Pianos differ widely in price, from entry-level digital models to luxurious grand pianos. Knowing your budget upfront can help you focus on instruments that fit within your financial constraints and reduce your selections. Consider extra expenses for upkeep, accessories, and possible piano lessons.
2. Understanding Piano Types
There are many varying kinds of pianos in Singapore's market, and each has its unique qualities. Vibrating strings are how acoustic pianos, such as grand and upright models, generate sound. Conversely, digital pianos mimic the sound of acoustic pianos while employing electrical components. When choosing between an acoustic and a digital piano, consider your musical tastes, the amount of room you have available in your house, and the amount you're willing to splurge.
3. Researching Piano Brands in Singapore
Every piano brand has its advantages and disadvantages; they are not all created equal. Look into reliable piano brands like Yamaha, Steinway, and Kawai that are sold in Singapore. Seek consumers' feedback and professional assessments to determine each brand's dependability, robustness, and general quality. Knowing the reputation of various brands will help you make wise financial decisions.
4. Trying Before Buying
Don't discount the significance of testing several models when buying a piano in Singapore. Explore the city's piano showrooms and play a variety of instruments. Examine each piano's overall feel, tone, and touch. If feasible, bring along a professional pianist or a piano instructor to get insightful knowledge. Selecting a piano that speaks to you requires firsthand experience.
5. Size and Space Considerations
Size counts when choosing between an acoustic and a digital piano. Select a piano that blends in well with your decor by considering the space available in your house. Although grand pianos are beautiful instruments, they take up a lot of room; meanwhile, upright pianos are smaller, taking up less space. People with limited areas usually prefer digital pianos because of their compact form.
6. Maintenance Requirements
Understanding the upkeep requirements is essential since maintaining a piano requires constant attention. Due to their complex mechanical construction, acoustic pianos may require routine tuning and adjusting. Although they usually require little upkeep, digital pianos occasionally need software updates. Consider the maintenance requirements over the long run while making your purchase to prevent unforeseen expenses.
7. Connectivity and Features of Digital Pianos
Check out the connectivity choices and extra features if you're considering buying a digital piano in Singapore. Digital pianos from today's models frequently have Bluetooth, USB, and headphone connectors. Consider whether these elements suit your tastes and way of life. If so, they can improve your piano-playing experience as a whole.
8. Warranty and After-Sales Service
Ask the vendor or manufacturer about their warranty and after-sales care before completing your piano purchase in Singapore. A comprehensive warranty safeguards your investment and offers peace of mind. In addition, if you experience problems with your piano after purchasing it, timely and dependable after-sales care is essential.
Conclusion
Selecting the ideal piano in Singapore requires carefully weighing your tastes, financial situation, and the range of possibilities on the market. Following a strategic process, from figuring out your budget to taking upkeep needs, will help you purchase a piano confidently. Whether you choose a state-of-the-art digital instrument or an acoustic masterpiece, adhering to these considerations ensures an enjoyable piano-hunting journey. Contact Steinway Gallery to invest in a masterpiece that will be the centrepiece of your musical endeavours.

2023: to travel
Hi B
I just got back from my summer trip to Hong Kong. Life has been great this year. Adulthood wasn't so bad afterall, B. People said life is gonna be different in our 20s, and you'll start to see there are so many paths in life which each of us uniquely has. There's no more structure--ga ada lagi tuh 'framed' path kayak habis SMP ya SMA lalu lanjut kuliah lalu lulus dan kerja. After graduating, the options are endless. I've seen some of my friends are in their climbing the corporate ladder phase, some are getting married, some are still in uni trying to graduate, some are seen feeding their babies on instagram, some are switching their career to be an internet person, some are traveling, some are resigning, and all other things I couldn't put one by one.
Sejujurnya, gue rasa hidup gue baru benar-benar mulai begitu gue sudah bekerja dan earn my own money. Liberty ain't free, no? I luckily get to live the way I wanted to when I was a kid: I got a job that brings me to liberty to buy the things I want and go to the places I want to visit.
B, I have made it to Japan this year! :') It was surreal. Such a great start to begin the year. My 10 years old self would be proud that I finally go to places I've only seen in those shoujo manga; Shibuya 109, Shibuya crossing, those red bright shrines, people in yukata(s) and kimono(s), all those japanese weird ice creams and puddings, eating kaisendon exactly just like what Aji no Suke Tokugawa made in Cooking Master, etc! I witnessed my first snow and snowfall ever in Kanazawa. It was beautiful and serene.
Speaking of Japan, jadi inget obrolan gue dengan Dida beberapa waktu lalu. Gue sempet ngerasa tahun lalu (2022) was such a dull year. I felt unproductive that the year passed in a blink without significant growth. But she made a good point afterward saying that I did my best with what I know at that time, it wasn't insignificant. Mungkin gue bisa ngerasa happy di tahun ini e.g by traveling karena hal yang gue lakukan di tahun kemarin. Gue bisa ke Jepang karena tahun 2022 gue nabung. Hiks :') emosional sedikit. For others, going to Japan might be just 'a thing', kayak liburan ke Bali, but to me is something big, something beyond an ordinary trip. It was a trip to nurture the child inside me. Seneng banget selama bawa Mama & Papa pergi mereka juga seneng dan terkesan banget by the places we went, the people, the food (there's absolutely no chance untuk makan makanan yang ga enak, serandom apapun itu). Definitely will go back to explore other cities.
I've had a fresh start at the beginning of the year in terms of career. I got to learn from zero all over again, engage with all new faces, face different challenges and catch up with different pace. It was something.
On March, Davi & I went to Singapore for Harry Styles' Love on Tour concert. Traveling with Davi was so easy, we made such a great team & almost always on the same ground at making decision. Agenda kita kesana ga hanya nonton Harry Styles, tapi juga nonton Candlelite Fever's solo piano concert yang bertemakan movie soundtracks. The ambience was very romantic and intimate. We got to see the pianist really close.
After lebaran, I went to Pontianak on May to gather with Mba Yaya, Kak Tasdik & Boba. My baby nephew has grown so much, I miss him so bad :') I discovered a lot Pontianak's delicacies. Nggak ada yang ngalahin choi pan bengkoang a phio, gue tiap hari gofood 20 biji! Ancur deh tu makanan. I kinda miss 2020 when my family got the chance to gather up and live day by day under the same roof, something which didn't occur for years before covid happened.
My family & I just went back from Hong Kong. It was our first buzzing summer trip. The heat was crazy. Lesson learnt, ga usah deh pergi traveling pas musim panas kalo tujuannya bukan ke pantai & leha-leha di daybed seharian. Our energy drained twice faster due to the heat. What can I say about Hong Kong? Hong Kong definitely was not the friendliest country. The people I've encountered are almost always rude. Everything was overpriced, even a bottle of water costs 10 HKD at least. The meals were not exactly matched with our tastebud. Waters from leaked AC everywhere accross the street. My parents got stuck in the elevator of our building. I never wanted to go home that much while traveling. For me, traveling to Hong Kong once in a lifetime is enough. On the other hand, I find Hong Kong admirable and picturesque.
I travel quite a lot throughout half of the year, until work almost felt like an in-between moments. I decided that's my plan for these two years, before it's time to settle down.
Greater things are coming

On Exams
Practical exam season in upon us and we would like to wish all of our candidates for this session the best of luck in their final preparations. It may be worthwhile at this time to reflect on the nature and value of music exams in the Classical music education environment.
The primary function that these exams fills is providing a framework of firm medium term goals without which the long time horizon of learning music may seem an endless expanse. As such these exams should be seen as a chance to look back at and apply what has been learnt and achieved rather than an end in itself.
Secondly, playing exams offers an opportunity to showcase your skills in front of a genuinely independent third party who has no particular vested interest in reporting only the good. This unbiased opinion can be invaluable in establishing clear and meaningful milestones in the path of development.
Finally, music exams offer the chance to focus on technical elements like scales and aural training that can very easily fall by the wayside in the absence of such structure and can be very difficult and disheartening to pick up at a later stage of development. These ancillary skills often make the difference between a mediocre and a good amateur musician.
At the same time music exams are not without their flaws. Chief among these is the simple fact that the examiner has very little real time to examine the deep technical aspects of a student’s playing, so the testing is necessarily at a very superficial level both of musicality and technique. This can mean that a student who has an unusual (or indeed especially insightful) sense of phrasing or musicality, what separates the great from the good, can be severely penalised on occasion. From a technical point of view the superficial nature of examinations can result in technical “shortcuts” being rewarded because it sounds better now, even if it will result in a worse product later. From a teacher’s point of view this can be highly problematic because technical shortcuts cause enormous problems later on that may undo whatever was gained in musical training.
Music exams should be seen as a minimum, not an end in itself. Although everyone loves receiving a shiny certificate to celebrate their achievements it is hard to say that having a distinction in grade 5 piano means anything much in the greater scheme of things. Even a grade 8 certificate only shows that one has successfully learnt the basic techniques of playing the instrument and not much besides.
With this in mind it is very important that one approaches the music exam as theatre, and not as an exam. In a sense it is a show, much like a stage performance of a play, and part of that show is some scenes with pieces, some with scales and some with aural training. Examiners will almost invariably mark based on their enjoyment of the performance as a whole, despite the marks being sub-divided into categories.
At the same time music lessons are not about putting on a good show in exam situations, they ultimately about learning to play and master music, which is at once a more specialised discipline and a much broader field of study.

Entry 12: What I learnt in Tasmania
This is my last journal entry before I submit this journal to my school. For the final entry, I wanted to sum up what I have learnt through this exchange program in Tasmania. Firstly, I have learnt to be more independent. Although this is not my first time living by myself, it was my first time going away to a further country with a different time zone. I first moved from Malaysia to Singapore back in 2019, but honestly, the culture between the two countries is not too far apart and it was only an hour's plane distance, besides, I have a few relatives staying there who will often assist me if I need help. I learnt to cook more complicated food to satisfy my cravings (since eating out is very expensive), to share a common area like a toilet, shower room, kitchen and laundry room with the other students, learnt some tips on saving money, for example, going to the supermarket in the evening to get more discounted food and more. I have learnt to adapt to new environments too, for example, I finally got used to showering in cold weather, and now I have no problem wearing short sleeves in weather below 20 degrees Celsius. I also learnt to step out of my comfort zone. I joined as many activities and events hosted by the school, the accommodations or any public events in Hobart. As an introvert, socialising was never my forte, but this exchange made me want to get to know everyone and learn more about the culture. I learnt about the history of the Aboriginals and the history of how this island was discovered. I had joined events like paint’n’sip where the students got to paint following a Bob Ross’ video tutorial while drinking wine, a brunch for international students where all international students gathered together and get to know each other and recently a Ramadan dinner hosted by the students of the Malaysia Society in UTAS. Although I found that there was more workload in UTAS compared to Lasalle, I managed to complete all without any trouble. I realised the biggest difference was I only needed to focus on school over here while in Singapore, I had to juggle between school and my part-time job. I did attempt on finding a job in Tasmania but did not get any messages back from the employer, so I decided to enjoy the luxury of only having to prioritise academics and not worried about other things. In school, I obtained knowledge in music and politics whereby I learnt the interrelationship between music and politics, and how they affected each other. It is also through this unit, I understand more about the darker side of music such as gender inequality, environmental crisis and racism. I also gained a lot in piano lessons with Shan Deng, the head department of the keyboard. She let me see and learn music from a different perspective, and how to execute the result I want more efficiently. Besides, in accompaniment class, I got the opportunity to work with Aiden, a French Horn player. I had never accompanied a brass instrumentalist before, so I was excited to collaborate with him. It has only been two and a half months, but I felt like I had stayed here for a long time. The semester ends in June and I only left 2 more months here, yet I am not ready to bid farewell to this beautiful island. Tasmania, an island that is always forgotten even by Australians themselves, full of rich natural resources and breathtaking sceneries, filled with kindness and love, will always hold a special place in my heart. I will end my journal with some of my favourite photos taken in Tasmania, the island of abundance.
