Sergei Lyapunov - Transcendental Étude Op. 11, No. 3 "The Bells" (Noack)
gah, i just really love piano pieces that reference the sound of orthodox church bells. Y’all have a favorite, other than that one Rach Prelude which everyone knows and Rachmaninoff hated (which is wild tbh, but I get it)??

Okay so I got really bored and decided to rank all of Chopin’s etudes (10 and 25) from favorite to least favorite! (although they are all ungodly perfect so even the LAST one on the list is godtier). Also just fyi this list has no real musical thought/analysis behind it except for personal preference since Chopin is my favorite composer xD
1. Op 25 no 1 (Harp Study)✨
2. Op 10 no 3 (Tristesse)
3. Op 10 no 10
4. Op 25 no 2 (The Bees)
5. Op 25 no 8 (Sixths)
6. Op 10 no 4 (Torrent)
7. Op 10 no 2 (Chromatic)
8. Op 10 no 1 (Waterfall)
9. Op 25 no 11 (Winter Wind)
10. Op 25 no 12 (Ocean)
11. Op 25 no 4 (Paganini)
12. Op 25 no 6 (Thirds)…scariest piece in the world mind you
13. Op 25 no 3 (The Horsemen)
14. Op 10 no 5 (Black Keys)
15. Op 10 no 12 (Revolutionary)
16. Op 10 no 11 (Arpeggio)
17. Op 10 no 8 (Sunshine)
18. Op 25 no 9
19. Op 25 no 5 (Wrong Note)
20. Op 10 no 9
21. Op 25 no 7 (Cello)
22. Op 10 no 7 (Toccata)
23. Op 10 no 6 (Lament)
24. Op 25 no 1 (Octave)
AHHH this was so hard to do!….I love all of these pieces🙏 Cheers to scales!

Okay but now I have to laugh. Laying in bed still unable to really move from pain and fatigue, and I'm hungry, so I put on some music from Ieeha's instrumental playlist...
Except I forgot about the pulsating tinnitus, which isn't triggered by all sounds but very much by piano. I don't got my headphones nearby which alleviates it so now my ear is making fluttering sensations from the inside to the beat every single note in Fantasie-Impromptu, as if Chopin himself is in my ear playing

I think I should be allowed to maul classical pianists for never slowing down and making hard, yet extremely boring and repetitive pieces that I wouldn't wish even my worst enemy to do

Look at what this goddamn instrument can do if you get good at touching it
At home, I listen to a Maki Namekawa recording of Philip Glass’s Études. I love her musicianship. With the études, she’s not trying to tell me how to think about anything. She’s not playing on my feelings, she’s playing her piano, she’s working. If she—and Philip Glass—is telling me anything right now it’s Look at what this goddamn instrument can do if you get good at touching it. “It’s nice to have an instrument that isn’t one’s own body,” James told me once, before attempting a Scriabin étude. “Pianos don’t have pain. Of course, there’s still the player. Études are for improving technique, so I recommend them for a crisis. One can plonk away at an étude and look like one’s practicing and not having, as Mother used to say, ‘a come apart.’ ” Containment.

Piano detail I didn’t appreciate until really recently: when playing on the keyboard, not all musical keys are equivalent. Yes, obviously some have more sharps and flats, and ones with a lot are annoying to play in. But I thought that was mostly because it was annoying to keep track of all the sharps and flats.
But also, there are things that are completely reasonable in one key that are not in others. The major ninth D-E interval is doable for most pianists. The major ninth E-F# is harder because there’s another piano key distance. There are a couple fingerings where black keys literally block access their neighboring white keys. Thus, it is entirely possible to transpose a piece and make it potentially unplayable (minus annoying contortions) on the piano.
