Comme Les Fleurs - Chapter 11
Chapter 11: After the Storm
Summary: Left with no other options, Kylian must rehab his newly injured leg at a stranger’s home for the next month and she isn’t at all what he expects. Meanwhile, Aurèle has to deal with easily-irritated and sullen Kylian as she opens her home to him.
Word Count: 7.6k
Warnings: anxiety, self-doubt, miscommunication, cursing
Note: Aurie reminding us that even the most strongest and independent people have their moments of doubt and still need reassurance too.
Aurie isn’t in bed next to Kylian when he rolls over and feels for her. Maple is curled at his feet, snoozing with her tail covering her eyes. The sun shines brightly into the room, filling every crevice of the bed that he knows it’s way too early for Aurie to be gone. He listens quietly for the quiet patter of her footsteps, trying to figure out where she wandered throughout the house as she’s not in the restroom.
Scoffing, he rises and dresses himself with his boxers and a pair of shorts. They slept late last night, Kylian staying back to help Aurie break down the decorations of the nursing home, and then laying in a tangle of limbs in her bed. Once it hit two in the morning, they finally slept, after having spent the night together tracing and memorizing every sliver of skin they shared.
Kylian pats Maple’s head, causing her to open her eyes and purr, stretching out towards him. A small smile finds his face as he exits her room and searches for Aurie. Already he knows something is uneasy. The rest of the house reeks of cleaning supplies, drenched dirt, and there’s a low hum of music coming from her library. Thudding down the stairs, he turns towards the library and sees her dusting the bookshelf, a large stack of books on the small table, a second away from collapsing onto the ground.
“Aurie,” he mutters, noticing her in a short pair of night shorts and a loose shirt.
She spins around to face him, her cheeks flushed. “Did I wake you?”
He shakes his head, walking closer to her. “No.”
“Sorry,” she smiles softly at him and then bends down to clean the bottom shelf. She grabs a book and haphazardly places a book on the ever-growing stack, it wobbles, and Kylian steps towards it, holding it.
“Aurie.”
“What’s up?”
“Come on, what are you doing?” He rubs his face, splitting the stack so that it doesn’t fall over on top of her.
“Cleaning.”
“It’s not even seven in the morning yet, Aurie,” he sighs.
Aurie purses her lips, disliking the way he utters her name. She knew he was tired, and she would’ve been too if it weren’t for her mind thinking of a hundred thoughts per second. She didn’t get much sleep last night, constantly thinking about Kylian and his move to Madrid. It was infuriating to be consumed by a man who lived so differently than her, yet made her question what she wants. The same man who seemed to have torn down her walls so easily before but now they were back up.
Before Kylian, she was sure of herself and her career. She had bounced through different departments—pediatrics, geriatrics, nursing homes, out-patient care, physiotherapy for a club—and was sure that the simple life of working at nursing home was it for her, that she wasn’t strong enough mentally to handle any other group, but now she wasn’t sure.
Besides Kylian, she thought of Maria and Estrella’s words, how she does have the time to still figure everything out. Still has time to see where she fits, whether that is in the nursing home or somewhere else. She had the power and skill.
And then Aurie scrambled to the last thought: that Kylian still had yet to ask her if she would even be willing to go to Madrid with him. What if he didn’t? What if he understood what the nursing home, the house and pets, and how much Camille and Simone meant to her, that the thought of splitting them up would never come across his mind, so he wouldn’t even think to ask Aurie—
“Aurie,” Kylian whispers, slipping his hand behind her waist and pulling her closer to him. He grabs a hold of the dusting cloth, prying it out of her hand and setting it down near the edge of the books. “C’mere.”
His warm skin burns her cheeks and neck as his strong arms engulf her. He smells of heat and her bed sheets, the sleep marks still evident in his shoulders. Aurie hugs his waist, clasping her hands where they meet, sighing deeply. She can feel her own body relax and mold into his arms.
“I’m sorry,” she mumbles.
He kisses her temple, pulling back. His finger traces around her ear. “What are you thinking? Let me in.”
It’s three simple words that Aurie wishes were as simple as saying them. But her tongue knots, her throat closes as she stares at his eyes. They’re soft, but there’s an emotion in them that makes her heart lurch, an ache that travels underneath her breastbone and through her ribs, paralyzing her in that spot. Aurie can plainly see the tension around his eyes and jaw.
“I can’t,” she croaks, slipping out of his grip. Kylian sighs, reeling his arms back slowly, offering her a faint smile but she knows it’s merely out of politeness rather than genuine. “I’m sorry. I know I said I wasn’t going to run away and I’m not, but—I need some time to think.”
“Okay,” he says softly, stepping away from her. The air stills between the two of them, a silence so sudden and profound that even Bleu stutters to a stop, his wagging tail going stiff.
Kylian glances at Bleu, walking out of the library, petting his head before going upstairs. He doesn’t know what to do. Maybe in some way this is her punishment towards him after the past week, but Aurie isn’t that cruel.
His phone buzzes from his pocket as he reaches the top of the stairs, he reads the message from Raphael.
Hey, I found Stefan. I have his mother’s contact information, should I send it?
-
“Hey,” she says, sandwiching the phone between her ear and shoulder. Escaping to the ballroom to clean the rest of the remnants of last night, she called Martin, needing to talk to him.
“Aurie,” Martin beams. “What do I owe the pleasure of this call?”
Aurie snorts, tossing the last bits of trash into the bin. “Hardly pleasure. Erm, got to ask, are you staying at PSG?”
“Absolutely not,” Martin says curtly. “Management is in shambles. I cannot in good faith stay there and try to micro-manage all their injuries while simultaneously listening to a new staff try and implement their different plans. No one can agree on anything.”
She purses her lips. “That bad?”
“Very, had I not been dealing with this, I would’ve fallen up on more of those in-person visits of Kylian like I said I would, but I knew you could handle him.”
Aurie nods, “So what are you going to do now?”
“Well, at the moment, back to orthopedics, in-patient and out-patient. Rather do that for the next couple of months at least. And you, Aurie? Has taking care of Kylian changed your mind about going back on the field?”
She laughs, sitting down in a seat. “No. Not at all—”
“You aren’t bad, you know? It can be intense and quick-paced, but you have it in you. You always have.”
“I know, I just rather not always be on edge all the time. It’s too much.”
“Mm-hmm,” Martin hums.
“Working with Kylian has made me realize that maybe I can do something else as well. Maybe just volunteer at the nursing home instead of working primarily there.”
“Ah. I saw that you two got very close…” There’s a light-hearted tone in his voice, perhaps teasingly.
“I know,” Aurie cringes, remembering who she’s talking to.
“I mean, technically—”
“Martin, we do not need to have this conversation.”
“Okay okay,” he chuckles. “All I’m saying is that you two got close and now he’s leaving. Is this why you are asking me?”
“Yeah…I don’t know if I want to get back into the hospital setting but maybe.”
“You can always work with me.”
“Martin.”
“Well, maybe not if you are planning on being with Kylian. Look, I don’t have much time on me right now, Aurie, but wherever you end up, you will excel. I’m not sure when and why you ever started doubting your abilities. You are capable of a lot of talented and remarkable things. I would have never selected or trusted you with Kylian had I had any doubt about your ability,” Martin pauses. “Truthfully, I think you should try the in-patient setting again. I know peds scared you, but you didn’t get to see the way those kids and parents walked out of the room when you were there. Maybe even geriatrics. You have given so many people hope, Aurie. You’ll be okay, alright?”
Aurie chokes back a sob. Listening to Martin’s praise reminded her of who she was when she was seventeen and taking his class, immediately getting his attention when she was the only one to pin the diagnosis on a patient of his. What she thought was an example ended up being the diagnosis of a patient he was currently caring for. It was a rare diagnosis, yet, Aurie seemed to know it within ten minutes, asking him all the right questions to arrive at her conclusion. Since then, her skill was highlighted in all of their exams and practical studies.
When she first walked into his class, she would’ve never imagined it leading to where she is now. At seventeen, she wasn’t fearful. She never hesitated, head-on with certainty, yet it all changed five years ago during her mother’s accident.
“Aurie?”
“Yeah,” she musters, sniffling, “okay, yeah, thank you.”
“If you ever need anything, you know you can always call me.”
“I will.”
“And oh hey! I can take over Kylian’s rehab from here. His medical in Madrid revealed that his calf is 95% healed,” he enunciated. “They were impressed with it and want him doing more agility exercises and getting his fitness up. I’ll send you a plan that they shared with me.”
-
Like a madman on the street, Aurie drove five over the speed limit because there were no nearby cars. It was barely anything over the speed limit, but it felt so damn powerful and exhilarating to steer into her driveway, feeling every jostle and jolt of her car, slamming on the brakes as she stopped in front of her house. Turning it off, she quickly hops out and ruffles Bleu’s fur before bolting through the front door.
Kylian stands there, sweat glistening off his toned biceps through his sleeveless tank. One of his cheeks is bulged as he carries the canister of strawberries.
Aurie’s mouth falls open. “You’re eating my strawberries again?”
A lopsided grin breaks out on Kylian’s face as Aurie nears him, snatching the canister of a few wet strawberries. He bristles, “Hey!”
“Come here.” She grabs his wrist in her other hand and he turns his palm over so that their hands can intertwine. She leads him to the living room and sees that the couch is drawn out into the bed, a blanket loosely drawn over it. She sits down and pats the spot next to her to sit down. “Okay I need to say it now before I start crying, but this is all so stupid.”
His eyebrows crease as his head tilts. “Hmm?”
“I know I haven’t been handling this right and have been very…emotional…but it’s silly because you haven’t even asked me yet.”
Kylian’s hand tightens around hers. He shakes his head, “You haven’t been too emotional. Asked you about what? Madrid?”
Aurie purses her lips, slightly embarrassed. “Not just Madrid, but where we go after this. What this—” Aurie raises their hands together, “—really means? Or what…is this just a summer fling?”
Kylian shakes his head immediately, not being able to hold his laugh as he says, “No, Aurèle, you are not a summer fling.” He lets go of her hand and slots it on her cheek. “You are not a summer fling. I love you. I’m in love with you. Selfishly so, that I would force you onto a plane and move you to Madrid with me if I could, but not only is that illegal…and unfair. You love it here, and I want you to come with me, really, I do, but that is only if you want to come.”
Aurie can feel the tears brimming around her eyes and a tear slipping down that Kylian doesn’t hesitate to wipe away. The small smile he gives her is full of adoration and love. His eyes are a stark difference from the ones she saw this morning.
But he didn’t leave. She left the house this morning, and he had three hours to leave but instead he worked out, spoke with Raphael, ate her strawberries, and waited for her to come back home.
He chuckles, a laugh that is suppressed but he attempts to hide it. “You are going to break my heart if you say no, but that’s okay, you don’t have to tell me your answer right now. I do, however, want you at my presentation. I know you may be reluctant and hate the media’s light, but they think you are my manager, so it won’t be odd that you are there. It’s okay if Madrid is too big for you, hell it might even be too big for me, but I don’t want this to end, Aurie.”
Despite the surge of courage Martin’s call gave her and remembering Maria and Estrella’s words from last night, she feels like she needs to debate just one more time about moving to Madrid—and the only way to do that is to get her career in order. She needed to cross her t’s and dot her i’s before she left.
The idea of being at Kylian’s presentation terrifies her. Her window was a blatant reminder of what happened during the first and last time she was under the cameras of the public with Kylian. But, the hope in Kylian’s eyes causes her to utter the words before she can stop herself. “I’ll be at your presentation.”
“Really?” His mouth falls open in a gleeful smile like a child being promised ice cream on their way home.
Aurie rubs his hand with her thumb, exhaling a shaky breath. “Yeah.”
Kylian kisses her cheek, letting his lips linger. “Thank you.” He faintly tugs her with his hand and captures her lips, sealing the promise with a kiss. When he retreats, Aurie feels a surge of heat travel through her body.
“I don’t want this to end either, Kylian,” she whispers. “I need to figure out my job, what happens to this house, my animals—if I do end up moving to Madrid permanently.”
“You need me to convince you?” Kylian proposes with a smirk.
Aurie laughs, hitting his chest with her hand. “No. I just don’t want to leave with many things unfinished.”
“You can always come back.”
“I know, but if I come back and there are problems…I’ll want to stay and fix them.”
“Okay.” He smiles, leaning against the couch, and pulling her into his chest. His arms swallow her whole as he kisses her forehead. “Thank you. For not running away and talking about this. You don’t have to decide everything right now, Aurie, although I know you were probably lying awake thinking about this the entire time, hmm?”
She nods sheepishly, chuckling as she draws little shapes on his clothed chest. “I wanted to wake you up in the night and tell you to just rip off the bandaid, let me know if you want me in Madrid or not.”
His chest vibrates. “You really thought you were a summer fling?”
“No,” she scowls, sitting up to face him. His hand traces the edge of her jaw as he smiles, it’s such a hazy smile behind hooded eyes that if he were anyone else she would’ve asked him if he were drunk. “My mind went there as I thought of the words, trying to describe a short-term girlfriend.”
Kylian snorts, shaking his head languidly. “I don’t know what else I need to do to prove to you how much I love you and would wait for you. I know we moved fast, but I’m sure of it, there is no one else I would rather have beside me than you.”
Aurie simpers, pecking his nose. His words felt like an arrow shooting right into her heart, striking with all its might, imprinting into her, and if she were to pull it out, it would leave a gaping hole that would never be filled. They gave her reassurance, that her worries weren’t for nothing, and that of course Kylian would be patient, would be willing, and wouldn’t rush her to uproot her entire life.
He knew when he walked into her house that falling in love with her would be damn near impossible, but he also wasn’t going to force this girl, who brought the smile to all of her residents and her niece, out of the town. Sure, he would get on his knees and beg for it, but it was Aurie’s decision at the end of the day. And she had a lump of baggage to sort through.
“You don’t have to do anything else. I know you do.” Aurie nestles her head back into the space between his arm and shoulder, her nose scrunching. “You’re kinda stinky, but I love you.”
He pulls her closer, tightening his arms around her so that she can’t wiggle out. “That’s a bit rude, chérie.”
-
Within the next two days, Aurie reluctantly straightens out her résumé and sends it to one hospital in Madrid, one that she has volunteered for back when she had the stint with the Spanish national team. Martin also enjoyed this particular hospital, so she knew if he had nothing but good things to say about it, then it was good.
She sent it in the middle of the night as Kylian laid with an arm strewn over her lap, snoring softly. She debated on sending it for thirty minutes, switching over the tabs repeatedly, until finally, thirty minutes later, she sent it while muttering a small, “Fuck it.” She shut her laptop and scooted it towards the end of her bed. Closing her eyes, she snuggled into Kylian’s body and sleep came swiftly.
In the morning, Aurie stirs awake before Kylian. Her legs are intertwined in his, sandwiched tightly around his muscled thighs. When she untangles from him, she kisses his cheek demurely, making his eyebrows twitch and turn toward the pillow. She kisses him again, running her hands over the planes of chest.
“Mmm,” he murmurs, his eyes slowly fluttering open.
“I’m going to head to the nursing home,” she says, because really, she did have an actual shift today. Kylian’s lips curl into a smile, his eyes still groggy as he rubs them, not interpreting any of her words. Aurie chuckles, kissing his forehead. “Okay I’m leaving, Kylian.”
“No,” he rasps, grabbing a hold of her propped wrist and pulling her back down.
“I’m going to be late for work.”
“Shhh,” he hums, pulling her back down to his warm frame. “Or take me with you.”
“I don’t think I can do that.”
“They love me,” he smiles, pecking her cheek. “And they love you.”
Aurie smiles, her eyelashes fluttering against his skin. They do love Kylian, and while no one would really care that he was there, it was still…odd? But she also didn’t care to ponder about it, he could volunteer to help some of the residents if he wanted to while she made her rounds, either way, she needed to start getting ready.
“If you want to come, you have about thirty minutes.”
“Thirty?” His eyes pop open.
She shrugs, “Yes.”
“Jesus, Aurie, how do you get ready so quickly and are so calm for something that starts in thirty minutes?”
“It is my first day back, officially, so…I don’t know,” she says nonchalantly like it explains everything. “I’ll eat there, so don’t have to worry about that. Just quickly shower, and then throw on some scrubs, and then I’m out the door.”
Kylian stares at her as if she suddenly grew antlers from the side of her head. But as much as he would’ve loved to join her, he knew he needed to start his new exercise regimens that he received from the physios at Real Madrid.
He kisses her lips chastely and releases her so that she can get ready. He watches her ruffle up Maple’s sleeping form, rile up Bleu and then grab a set of clothes before trotting towards the restroom. He snorts at the sight, his heart thumping in his eardrums.
He falls back to sleep for what he imagines is five minutes, but in reality it’s been 25 minutes. He wakes up with Aurie kissing his forehead, his chin pinched in her fingertips.
“I’ll see you in a bit, don’t forget dinner with your parents!” And then she rushes out of the bedroom door with the animals in tow.
-
Kylian is restless when the time of the reservation for the dinner comes, pacing back and forth down the hallway as Aurie stands in the kitchen, casually writing down a list of groceries she needs.
“Ky,” she mutters mindlessly, knowing that he is fretting about something, but doesn’t indulge him because the worry is most likely nothing.
He fusses with the tie on his neck, pulling it off entirely and tossing it onto the couch. He doesn’t need a tie, he realizes, it’s just his family. He undoes the top of the buttons and walks down again, spinning around and then stopping abruptly in the kitchen.
“Yes?”
Aurie perks up at him, leaning against the counter with one hip. Setting the pen down on the notepad, her brows raise, “Have you ever been to a grocery store?”
He sighs, and walks—no, strides—towards her. His hands land on her cheeks, cradling her head before he leans in and kisses her lips. The small stubble he was growing is gone, cleanly shaven that she feels his smooth chin against hers.
“You are beautiful,” he says when he pulls away, exhaling with a ragged breath. He glances down at the white blouse she wears, and then at her black pencil skirt.
She chuckles, her cheeks warm up like the first time he’s ever looked at her for more than two seconds. “So, have you?”
He shakes his head. “It’s been years, possibly six, no seven—eight?”
She laughs, her hands fixing the top of his white button-up. “I hate that you haven’t experienced a grocery store in so long. There’s nothing like the crushing disappointment when you realize they ran out of the ice cream you’ve been craving for days, and then a screaming child is behind you begging their mom for candy.”
Kylian smiles, shaking his head at her rambles, too distracted with the way her necklace is shining underneath the kitchen’s light fixtures. He chuckles as he kisses her jaw.
“Oh! And then of course you always forget something on your list. No matter how many times you think you’ve got everything, nope! And it’s the most important item, too.”
His hands snake behind her waist as he pulls her closer to him, pulling her body closer into him. Her neck is exposed so he pecks it, tickling Aurie in the process.
“What are you fussing about?” Aurie asks.
He sighs, resting his head against her shoulder. “I’m just nervous. Worried that the media will find us.”
Aurie smiles softly, hugging his shoulder blades. “They won’t.”
“And if they do?”
“Then,” Aurie shrugs. “Oh well.”
“You won’t be mad?”
“No, I’m more focused on meeting your family than the media.” And it’s the truth for Aurie. The media is at the bottom of her worries for tonight. She also frets about Camille and Raphael making it on time. If she’s going to move to Madrid, she’ll need to get used to cameras.
When Kylian peels away, Aurie massages the worry lines on Kylian’s face, chuckling at the way his lips pucker out.
“They’re going to love you,” he whispers.
“I know you say that, but you know, I still don’t want to do anything embarrassing.”
Kylian grins. “Like what?”
“Fall on my face?”
“That’s not going to happen.”
“You’ll be surprised what happens when I’m under pressure.”
“Can promise there’s no water bottles,” he smirks, referencing the time she recounted her spraying the Marseille player with water.
She gasps. “Hey!”
His lips split into a laugh as he grabs a hold of her face and kisses her. “I’m kidding! But let’s go, Mac and Paul are here.”
Making their way to the car, Kylian holds open the door and Brice sits in the backseat, who waves with a welcoming smile. “Aurie, hello.”
“Hi.”
Paul turns his head from the passenger seat. “Please tell me you aren’t trying to flood the car again.”
“Oh, my god,” Aurie groans as she sits down, a chuckling Kylian behind her, slithering his hand onto her thigh.
“You know, Brice,” Kylian says, glancing at him. “Aurie called you cute when she first saw you.”
Aurie’s cheeks redden, palming her face. She isn’t sure how she suddenly became the butt of the joke, but she wasn’t going to let them run away with it. “Was I supposed to call him ugly?” The boys snicker, and Aurie taps Paul’s shoulder. “And I didn’t see you attempting to cool him down.”
Paul laughs, throwing his head back, his beaded locs slam against the headrest. It’s the first time Paul shows any personality in front of Aurie, even Mac cracks a small smile from the driver seat. Kylian’s security detail that he kept in place around her house were cordial, never talked to her, not that she minded. She would see them playing with Bleu occasionally but that was about all they gave through their tough exterior. Just three men whose names she mixed up.
“I heard that you took Kylian driving,” Paul says, angling his body towards Aurie. Kylian intertwines his hand with Aurie’s, leaning his head on the headrest, simpering.
Aurie narrows her eyes. “Mmm, yes he was scared the entire time.”
Kylian gasps. “For a good reason!”
Paul snickers as he intigates, “Come on, Kylian, you’re going to Madrid without a license.”
Kylian’s jaw drops, glancing between Aurie and Paul and hearing a stifled laugh from behind him. How are they suddenly teaming up against him now? “Alright now.”
Aurie laughs at his antics. She sticks out her hand towards Paul who shakes it, silently acknowledging their success to get underneath Kylian’s skin. Paul turns around while Aurie, noticing Kylian’s small pout, kisses the back of his hand.
-
“Tatie Aurie!” Simone leaps off the bench and runs towards Aurie. Camille and Raphael are right behind her, hand in hand. There are hardly any cars in the parking lot of the restaurant. The incandescent lights that line the restaurant cast a glow on Simone’s pale blue dress.
Kylian doesn’t hold Aurie’s hand, worried of paparazzi lurking nearby, though so far it seems calm. They chose a restaurant in Aurie’s town, knowing that the quietness of it wouldn’t draw much attention and renting it out for the night would be easier on such short notice. His entire family was already inside, having arrived about ten minutes ago.
“Hi, Keelan,” Simone greets once Aurie picks her up. She gives Kylian a small wave from the crook of Aurie’s shoulder. Kylian chuckles, waving back to her and then introducing her to Brice.
Camille and Raphael stand up once they meet at the bench. Aurie settles Simone back onto the floor and Kylian fixes the side of Aurie’s blouse. She turns around, thanking him with a smile and his knees go weak. She slots her arm around his back like it’s second nature.
Brice gets the front door and they make their way inside, the hostess leading them towards their table. The lights are drawn down, the only lighting coming from hanging bulbs, a kind of elegance that you would find in the city. It was a wonder she had no idea about this place, it was stunning.
There was some greenery hanging throughout the ceiling, being able to see hints of what it would look like in the daytime. Kylian nudges Aurie to keep walking as she gets distracted, his hand finding her lower back.
“It’s pretty in here,” she whispers. “Seems expensive.”
Kylian snorts. “Hardly. It’s just a pretty restaurant.”
She knows it isn’t expensive, but the ambience is rich. They chose a very good place, one in which she would visit again.
Kylian perks up when he sees his family. His parents, Fayza and Wilfried, are seated on one end, Ethan sandwiched between his niece and nephew—Lana and Isayah—and then Melissa beside Lana. Intertwining his hand with Aurie’s, he pulls her past the hostess and Brice. Aurie laughs, tightly holding onto him.
His nephew and niece greet him first excitedly, getting up from their seats and immediately jumping at his side. Kylian hugs them and then one by one he introduces Aurie and her family to his own. They each draw her in for a hug; Lana and Isayah immediately friending Simone and kicking Ethan out of his seat so that they can sit together.
Afterwards, Kylian pulls out Aurie’s chair and she sits in between Camille and him, Simone across from her, already engaged in an animated conversation with Lana.
It’s Fayza who catches Aurie’s eyes throughout the beginning part of dinner, she glances at her, staring at her and Kylian carefully. Kylian speaks enthusiastically amongst his family, wanting to hear what they’ve been up to more in detail since he’s been gone, and then highlights some of what Aurie has done for his recovery. There’s no way someone could miss how happy Kylian is at that moment. Fayza’s quiet, presumably soaking in the conversation like the rest of them, but Aurie feels like she’s silently assessing her.
Aurie stifles a smile, earning a snort from Camille who then jabs her side with her elbow. Aurie leans in towards her sister and whispers, “Don’t start.”
“That’s about the fakest smile I have ever seen in my life.”
“I feel like this is a test,” Aurie whispers, catching Raphael’s ear who chuckles quietly.
“You are doing fine, really,” Camille assures.
Raphael nods. “Stop doing that smile though…seems odd. You have a naturally resting smile, so just do that.”
Aurie’s face warms when Kylian’s hand slides underneath the table and clasps his hand with her own. Aurie forces a smile that quickly fades, her awareness of every muscle on her face sharper than ever.
A waiter distracts them as they place the order of their meals, a variety of pasta dishes. Kylian smiles bashfully as he strokes her hand with his thumb. “Stop worrying, mi amor.”
“Mi amor?” Aurie raises her eyebrow.
“Practicing.”
Aurie chuckles, feeling some of the tension ease off her shoulders with Kylian’s brief interaction. His squinting eyes and glowing face, he looked so handsome underneath this kind of light—and his happiness is contagious.
The kindness Kylian’s family shows the staff doesn’t go unnoticed by Aurie or her sister. Their manners are all profound, even the youngest of them, and Aurie watches them as they point to the menu of what they’d like. Simone sneaks glances at Aurie across the table, giggling when she does a silly face and then hides her face with the menu.
“She’s made friends,” Camille laughs.
“And look at you, you were worried she wouldn’t make friends in school when she starts next year.”
Camille shakes her head. “Because she can be too blunt.”
“She’s a kid, you know how they are. We certainly were like that.”
Raphael nods, blowing a raspberry. “Tell me about it.”
“Hey,” Camille interjects. “You didn’t have to tag along.”
“Yes, I did.”
“Well you should’ve made other friends instead of always following me around.”
“You are all I need,” Raphael winks at her and Aurie snorts, a bubbly but loud noise that grabs the attention of the rest of the table.
“Did you just snort?” Ethan chimes, amusement in his eyes.
Aurie embarrassingly drinks a sip of her wine as the rest laugh, before setting it down. “It comes out sometimes.”
“All the time,” Kylian notes, raising his finger.
“You aren’t that funny.”
The table immediately bursts into a laugh—including Fayza—not that Aurie was taking note of it. She slaps her hand over her mouth to cover her own laugh and looks back at Kylian, quickly muttering, “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be,” Melissa interrupts. “That was good.” She raises her glass for Aurie to clink with hers. Kylian is slightly flustered as they clink glasses, smiling fondly.
He leans in to kiss Aurie’s cheek and whispers softly, just for her to hear, “I love you.” Aurie's smile widens and Kylian’s breath catches, brushing her cheek with his thumb before intertwining his fingers with hers again.
Conversation flows swiftly, Aurie grows increasingly at ease, even when the discussion shifts to focus on her. Kylian, never once breaking his gaze from her, becomes more certain that Aurie is the one for him. She speaks with such ease, striking the perfect balance between professionalism and passion, without coming across as inauthentic. Impressionably, she doesn’t back down when Wilfried asks in-detail about her career choices. Kylian knows he can interject but Aurie doesn’t need him to.
Aurie should have known that Fayza was going to be the least of her problems, because the interrogation that Wilfried was putting her under, even Camille grabbed her other hand underneath the table.
“Why did you leave PSG?”
“To be frank, I became too emotionally invested in working as a physio,” she replies candidly. Thank god for the many sips of wine that she had. She’s sweating under his gaze. “Too many season-ending injuries. It felt like I was putting in a long time with these athletes just for them to get tackled and reinjure themselves. It was beginning to take a toll on me.”
“So then you went to the nursing home?”
“Not necessarily in that order,” she says meekly. “I worked in a hospital prior and then settled at the nursing home next door. I am specialized in pediatric and geriatric care, orthopedics as well.”
“Ah, impressive,” Fayza responds, eyeing Wilfried. With that glance from Fayza, Wilfried tips his glass towards Aurie, and she’s never been so thankful for the conversation to subside there, immediately sipping on the glass in a silent toast, and then exhaling a deep breath quietly.
Camille squeezes Aurie’s hand and then retreats it. She gives Aurie a thumbs up before the attention returns to Kylian. His eyes are more glossy than Aurie remembers them, perhaps it’s a mixture of the lighting or the wine, but it’s endearing.
-
“I’ll be right back,” Kylian excuses himself, following his mother to the terrace. She made a subtle sign earlier for him to follow her, and he’s barely gaining the confidence to get up and follow her. He kisses Aurie’s head before finding his mother outside. The cool air hits him when he opens the terrace door, the wind blowing the door open more forcibly than he anticipates.
Fayza chuckles, a lit cigarette in between her lips. “Are you drunk?”
“Non,” Kylian mutters, closing the door.
“Wine drunk has always looked so interesting on you. Can’t hold your liquor at all.”
Kylian smiles softly, relishing the wind rippling against his shirt. He hadn’t realized how nervous he was for both him and Aurie just now.
“I knew I would like her when you first told me about her,” she starts. “But I think I enjoy her even more now. She’s very smart too.”
“Incredibly.” He sits down in one of the seats.
“What are you worried about then?”
“That she won’t want to leave,” he mutters, glancing away at her careful gaze. “I mean you saw her with her family, they adore her… They’re already tight-knit and deeply protective of each other, just trying to get close with them was tough.”
Kylian sighs, resting his head against his propped fist. Seeing little Simone teasing Aurie from across the table and stealing glances between them throughout the chatter, his chest ached thinking about them being separated by a country-line.
Fayza puts out the lit cigarette in the ashtray and sits down in front of her son. “They are, I can tell. You aren’t going to separate them, Kylian. She’s moved before, without them.”
“I know, but—”
“Seeing the way she is now, she will have no problem traveling for the people she cares about,” Fayza interrupts, and Kylian knows she’s right. “I’ve never seen you so infatuated with someone like this, it’s pure. If it’s true love, the two of you will have no problem adapting to your new life.”
Kylian smiles, nodding alongside her words. He lets her grab his hands and she cradles them protectively.
“Besides, she is very beautiful, strong too. I didn’t think you’d fall in love so quickly with her, but after seeing how she is, I understand,” Fayza chuckles.
They could agree on that as well. Aurie was certainly the most beautiful girl he has ever seen, inside and out. Her heart captured him and locked him inside, and he didn’t want to escape.
“It’s crazy, isn’t it?” Kylian grins, feeling his cheeks grow warm. Fayza squeezes his cheeks, making him laugh.
When the two of them make their way back inside, Kylian heads to the men’s room while Fayza saunters back to the table quietly, sitting in Kylian’s spot. Before he can even stop her, Raphael whistles at him and motions him down the hallway.
“Have you contacted Stefan’s mother yet?”
Kylian shakes his head. “Was waiting on a couple of things.”
“Like what?”
“Whether or not Aurie would be at my presentation and my official announcement to the team.”
“When is that?”
“Tomorrow…”
“And your presentation?”
“Not until a few weeks,” Kylian scratches his neck. “You and Camille and Simi are invited by the way”
Raphael smiles briefly, “Thanks man. I’m sure Simi will enjoy that.”
Meanwhile, Aurie and Fayza disappear onto the terrace. Simone, growing restless and sleepy, rests her head against Camille’s shoulder.
Aurie frets with her skirt once she steps outside, unsure whether to sit or admire the small garden, she does the latter.
Fayza smiles warmly when she stands next to Aurie. “This place is beautiful.”
“Isn’t it?” Aurie pinches several flower petals between her fingers.
“Kylian told me about your reluctance to the media,” Fayza continues. “I know the rock being thrown in your window gave you quite a scare, that must’ve been terrifying.”
“Oh,” Aurie says, glancing down. She lets out a forced laugh, “Erm, yeah, a bit. But it’s fixed now, and I feel safe knowing it was all resolved.”
Fayza laughs. “Aurie, you have nothing to worry about. I completely adore you.”
Aurie grins, leaning against the garden’s railing. “Sorry, I am just a little tipsy. I apologize, genuinely, but I’m nervous.” Aurie lets out a shaky exhale, one that she had been holding since Fayza sat down next to her.
“No worries at all, you and my son both seem to be that way—tipsy.” Aurie laughs alongside Fayza. “Anyway, I know being in the spotlight of the media seems daunting and downright scary, but you won’t always have to be in the spotlight. We’re very private and if you don’t want to be in the limelight all the time, that’s perfectly fine. You’ll never be forced to explain yourself.”
Aurie nods, digesting her words. Slowly, they calm her nerves.
“Unfortunately, it will always be a factor, Aurie,” she continues. “But it’s about how you let it affect you. How you react to it or choose to embrace it. You can stay away from social media, set everything to private, or even delete your accounts altogether, but don’t let it hinder you from being with someone you love, okay?”
“Yes, that’s very wise. Thank you for those words,” Aurie says breathlessly. This all but intrigued her and comforted in one go.
Fayza laughs. “You said you were currently looking at jobs?”
“Oh, yes!” Aurie excites. “Well, I only applied to one at a hospital. It’s for geriatrics, the older population. It’s a smaller hospital, and I expect to hear a call back, but—” Aurie shrugs, “—kind of nervous for the first time. I debated applying for a long time the other night and really the idea of starting over in a hospital nauseates me.”
“You’ll be great there. I can tell you bring the kind of energy that lights up the entire room. You showed it tonight.”
“Thank you.” Heat creeps against Aurie’s cheeks. “I appreciate your words, immensely. I needed the extra boost in confidence…been an uncharacteristically few days feeling down.”
Fayza empathizes and holds her arms wide, beckoning for Aurie to hug her. Aurie doesn’t hesitate, chuckling nervously when she wraps her arms around Fayza. Her head rests against her shoulder, feeling small but reassured that everything would be okay.
She blinks away the tears, not wanting to ruin Fayza’s blouse, but her words did mean a lot to her. Hearing them from someone who had yet to meet her in person gave her a newfound confidence—a better judgment than anyone who knew her because Fayza immediately saw Aurie through any walls she attempted to put up.
“You are very lovable, it’s no wonder he fell in love with you so fast.”
Aurie laughs as a tear slips, wiping it away quickly.
-
As they hug and say their goodbyes, Melissa strikes up a conversation with Camille, the kiddies run alongside the sidewalk after their energy was revived with ice cream for dessert. Kylian’s hand tightly grips Aurie’s, not letting her go as he speaks to his family,
Ethan seems bashful in front of Aurie, and she can’t tell why, but she doesn’t pick on him despite it being on the tip of her tongue.
“I’ll see you at the presentation?” Ethan asks, glancing down.
“You will, it was nice meeting you,” Aurie says.
“You too,” he nods, before Kylian engulfs him into a hug.
“See you later,” Kylian utters towards his brother.
Finally, Aurie untangles their hands and waves at Ethan once more before strolling over to Camille and Raphael. They've moved closer to Paul and Mac, who are standing outside the car, playfully teasing the kids. As Aurie passes Melissa, she gets a warm hug, and Melissa then gathers her children from Paul. Aurie chuckles as she watches Simone leap up to give Paul a high-five.
Camille and Raphael embrace Aurie before she bends down and says bye to Simone. Simone wraps her tiny arms around Aurie’s neck before hopping away with a giddy smile.
On the way back to Aurie’s house, Kylian leans his head on her shoulder the entire time and mumbles incoherently, speaking just to speak. Not that Aurie minds, she’s checking her email, waiting to see if there was any update regarding her job position. She waits some agonizing seconds for the app to refresh before finally, there is an email regarding the position. She skims through the introduction and finds the paragraph she’s been waiting for.
Upon reviewing your application, we believe your exceptional skills and experience are better suited for our out-patient geriatrics role, while possibly aiding some of the new in-patient physiotherapists. Your expertise in both in-patient and out-patient rehabilitation and your compassion—
Aurie’s eyes went wide, her application was accepted!
By the time they make it inside, they can’t keep their hands off of each other, not even bothering to make it up the stairs, just settling down on the couch in the living room. Their discarded clothing lines the path from the front door to the couch. She tells Kylian the news when their chests are still silently heaving.
“Ky,” she says, sitting up. She slips on Kylian’s white dress shirt, which distracts him.
“Hmm?”
“I applied to a hospital about two days ago in Madrid,” she murmurs sheepishly, feeling shy under his gaze. He cradles her head against his shoulder, peering down at her.
His brown eyes widened. “Really? That’s amazing—”
“I got it.”
“What?!” He tries to reign in his excitement, but he can’t because if the position was offered, it meant she’s a step closer to moving to Madrid with him. That she was going to choose him. It also meant that she was over her hump of doubting herself. He kisses her forehead with a firm kiss.
“I got the position.”
“Well of course you’d get it,” he beams, pulling her impossibly tighter into his chest. “I’m so proud of you, chérie.”
She silently curses all the doubts that have plagued her over the past few days and weeks. Despite her insecurities, this hospital recognized her exceptional skills and experience at just 25, deeming her capable of teaching the new physiotherapists. Whatever spell she had been under, she hoped it was gone for good.
Although she completed possibly the biggest task she needed to figure out, she still wanted to speak with her mother before she left. She didn’t even want to think about what she would say when she was moving, but Aurie vowed to not let it affect her. She was able to move past many of the things her mother told her, and one more thing wouldn’t hurt.
Aurie squeezes Kylian’s torso tighter, snuggling into him until she finds a comfortable position to sleep. His protective arms wrap around her like a secure cocoon, and she’s never felt so relaxed as she does now.

Author’s Note: You guys are so splendid and beautiful! I can’t thank you enough for your support and encouragement to finish this piece. First, welcome to new readers! I know poor Henry’s injury and subsequent physiotherapy has driven some of you here, and while I’m sorry for him, I’m glad I can consider myself something of a pioneer in this particular genre and provide you some help for your newfound thirst. To my OG readers, it is to you I owe this entire work, parts written and incomplete, and I hope an eventual book deal. I mean to mention you in my acknowledgements, should this ever reach a willing publisher. You’ve inspired me so supremely that I cannot quantify it, even with the words I hold so dear.
Since my last chapter was posted, we’ve said a relieved goodbye to 2020 and a tentative hello to 2021. To be honest, this year has started out worse than last year. Lots of bad weather in my area this winter, my sister is currently on her way to a new life in another state, and my grandmother, the last grandparent I had, passed away in February. Those last two things have been especially difficult to shake off and recover from, both coming to fruition pretty suddenly. Amongst all that, I’ve been pretty distracted by my other fandoms, especially Marvel, and I’ve been reading a killer book series that I’m utterly in love with. (The Throne of Glass novels by Sarah J. Maas. 10/10 recommend.) But I knew I needed to get back into Shane and Sy’s story, especially given the new and rekindled interest in the subject matter. In all honesty, I’ve had most of it written for months. It’s just been a matter of finishing it off to set up the rest of the story.
I really hope you all enjoy Chapter 20, Second Assist, and would love your feedback and notes. You are all so important to this story, and your notes, reblogs, and comments are cherished. Thank you so much for reading! Love from Hannah!
Disclaimer: Unfortunately for me, Henry is not mine, le sigh, and all mention of him, his characters, any characters from his films, or his precious doggy, Kal, are strictly for transformative and recreational use. I neither ask for, nor accept payment for the work I post on Tumblr or AO3. Unbeta’d because this is for fun and escapism. This is an original work by me, Hannah. Please reblog if you wish to share. Please do not repost either in whole or part, as the work of anyone but myself. Thanks so much for reading!

If you want to be notified when I post a new chapter or work, I’ll be happy to add you to my tag list! Stricken blogs are getting personal messages from me when a new chapter is uploaded because Tumblr’s faulty tagging system will not stand in the way of me delivering what the people want!(?) lol! (Although…their lackadaisical notification system might…sorry for that. I have no control. lol!)

Shane woke in her warm bed, late morning sun streaming in through her sheer curtains, the heavier drapes parted to let in the light. She wished she'd remembered to close them before now. She really was not ready to be awake.
She was sore. Achy. Her sleep had been fitful and full of shadowy nightmares and muffled screams. Beyond that, she didn't try to remember images or events. She knew the general premise of the dreams. It would take a lot of time, effort, or a miracle to make her forget those traumas she'd been through in the last week. Not even forget. She knew she never would. But move on from them. Accept them. And heal from them…even that seemed a mighty obstacle. One she was not sure she could surmount.
Through the open bedroom door, she could hear Lynyrd Skynyrd and the clanging and sizzling of pans, and she could smell bacon and freshly brewed coffee. Sy had left the room, but had not, it seemed, gone far. She gingerly sat up, stood from the bed, and donned her robe as she walked out into the hall and down the corridor to the kitchen.
The sight before her warmed her heart. There was Sy. In only his boxers, daringly frying the notoriously dangerous breakfast meat. Upon her entry to the kitchen, she could also smell pancakes, and she thought syrup, as well. He seemed to be warming a bottle of the maple unction in a pot of hot water. He turned as she stepped on a squeaky floorboard, and grinned widely at her.
"Mornin' sunshine." And she was struck by the irony of someone with such a radiant smile calling her sunshine. Especially when she didn't feel much like beaming. But she couldn't help return the expression, even through her pain.
"Mornin' bear. Did you go to the store?" She knew she couldn't have any bacon in her fridge, and she doubted her eggs and milk were still good at this point. But she also couldn't think that he would leave her for any reason.
"Nah, some of the guys brought over some provisions. Matt worked on your car all night, too, and filled up the tank. It's as good as new. He and Nate brought ‘er over as well as the groceries. I just had ‘em get stuff I knew your family wouldn't be bringing later. They've had tons of food given to them this week, and they're ready to share. You should have seen your mom loading me down with sandwiches and chips and whatnot when I visited them."
"I still can't believe you met them. I really wanted to introduce you personally." Shane's face fell. She would never be able to get that back. She wanted to cry. Sy had poured her a cup of coffee and sat it in front of her with her favorite creamer.
"Darlin' I’m so sorry. I had to talk to them."
"I know." she sniffed. "I'm not mad. Not at you. Just…"she didn't want to say Elliott's name. "I'm disappointed that the experience was stolen from me." That so many things had been stolen from her. By that monster. There was no other way to describe him. Sy growled. As if he could read her mind. He really just knew her well enough and shared her thoughts.
"Well, don't worry, we'll have a nice dinner with them one of these days, and we can pretend. Sound good?"
"Yeah, and I can feign nervousness." she laughed.
"And I'll pretend too. That I'm scared to meet your dad." he chuckled. "What if he threatens me with his shotgun?"
"I'll pull the ol' 'Daddy, no, I loooooove him!' line, as I throw myself between you!"
"That oughta work." he laughed and kissed her on the forehead as he stepped toward the stove and flipped a pancake.
As they sat eating their late breakfast, Shane's mind wandered. Nothing had changed on the surface, but everything was different now. This cozily mundane breakfast with her boyfriend felt like an out of body experience. As delicious as it was, as wonderful and comforting as it should feel, her guard was up. Even through her amiable façade. She was not the person she was two weeks ago. She was not the same woman who said goodbye to Sy at the base. Maybe that was the real transformation. Maybe that was why nothing felt normal. It wasn't the world, but her own self coming back into it.
"Shane?" Sy asked, gently, but it felt like he was speaking through a megaphone directly into her ear. She was so startled, she nearly dropped the half full mug of coffee that was paused midway to her lips. A bit sloshed out onto the table and splashed her shirt.
"Shit!" she chided herself. It wasn't a big deal, but she felt stupid jumping at the sound of her own name.
Sy reached for the closest towel, hanging from the oven handle, grabbed it and started for her clothes with it. She stopped him. But she couldn't think about why the intimate act made her uncomfortable.
"No, don't, it's fine. These clothes have seen better days, anyway." She pulled the towel from him and began to mop up the small puddles of coffee around her plate.
Sy seemed to note the stains already present on the shirt, as if trying to divine their history. She was something of a messy eater, so the battle wounds of many a barbecue, spaghetti dinner, and hurried breakfast peppered the now off-white SATB club tee she'd gotten her second or third year in college choir. She thought back to a huge room with high ceilings. White, cinder block walls, flecked tile floors, a beautiful, glossy, black baby grand in front of a long whiteboard with black lines to resemble sheet music. She thought about the mnemonic device she'd learned to help her remember what notes appeared on each line, and in the spaces between them. She pondered the deeper meanings and implications of these devices. EGBDF…every good boy does fine. She thought about the "good boys" in her life. She knew many. Her dad, her brother Ethan, Sy, obviously, her many male coworkers and friends…and honestly they did far better than "fine." They were wonderful. But she was letting the "bad boys" she'd encountered dictate her mood. Permeate her psyche. Tear her down. She didn't want to be like this. Then FACE came to mind, and above their purpose of indicating the notes between the lines on the staff, they called her to action. To face these newly minted demons with all the strength she knew she possessed, and she too would "do fine." But as with almost all actions, this was easier said than done.
She felt a warm presence on her left hand which had paused it's torture of the now coffee-infused kitchen towel. Sy's hand was squeezing hers gently.
"Shane." he uttered, barely above a whisper this time. She looked at him through tears that she had not realized had formed. He continued.
"Shane, what can I do, darlin'? I'll do anything."
"Babe, you're doing everything you can, and more. This…this is all going to have to come from me. I…don't know when I'll be myself again…" she paused, tears streaming now. "I'm…I'm different."
"You're not though." he reached for her face, but she pulled away.
"I am, damn it! Sy, I was…" Words had power. And the one she was thinking of had more power than she thought was warranted. She knew that uttering it would take away it's power…and yet mustering the courage and strength to actually do so…seemed impossible. She took a deep breath, and disassociated herself from the statement, even though it was about her own past.
"I was raped." She refused to cry. She felt it all again. She had never said the words. She had never thought it necessary. Everyone understood. Sy, his friends, and she was sure her own loved ones had made the connection. But she knew she needed to say it now to drive home the points she was about to make.
Sy, looked at the table, nodding, not needing to be told in so many words something he already had surmised from the clear evidence. He remained silent. She went on.
"I love you, Sy. I have since the day we met, on one level or another, and I believe that I always will. But I…right now I can't be a proper girlfriend to you. I can't…be with you, touch you, be touched by you, in the way we used to be. In the way you deserve…and I don't know when…or even if…I ever will. Not that I don't want to. That's ALL I want in the world. To go back. To be the woman who fell in love with this…incredible man. To make love with you, but…I can't."
Sy's eyes were full of tears, their predecessors already descending his round cheeks and disappearing into his thick, dark beard.
"Sy, I don't want to lead you on and keep you tied to a relationship with no life in it. You deserve someone who's whole. Someone who can be a fully invested partner for you, and not this broken, damaged--"
"You stop that, Shane. I won't hear no more of this kinda talk. Y'hear? You're my girl. My woman. My person. No matter what. You gotta know I'd never leave ya just cuz you aren't ready for sex again. You don't think that I would, do ya?"
"Well, you went to Virginia…you took that job…knowing the distance it would put between us. Literally and figuratively."
"Biggest mistake of my life." Shane raised her eyebrows in surprise as Sy elaborated. "I couldn't focus on my classes without wishing you were there. Wishing I could team up with you for discussions and hand to hand combat training…that thought got me a little too excited, if you catch my drift." He smirked, pulling a sheepish smile from Shane. "Then in that forest. I dreamt about you every night. I thought of you constantly. I could barely breath sometimes, I missed ya so damned much. I was an idiot. I was insane to think that I needed anything other than you. Any MORE. There IS no more. You're it. You're the MOST! The most important thing in my life."
The declaration hung like vapors in the air, more felt than seen. Tangible yet ethereal.
"And when I found out that you were missing…I was…well, I think I looked like death…and not warmed over. You can ask the program director I met with after I got the news. She could tell I was just sick over it. And as I thought about it on the way home, pieced things together, started thinking about who'd taken you, I got murderous. Shane, I have been in dozens of battles, skirmishes, firefights, you name it. War. But…the sheer bloodlust I felt thinking about what you could be going through…I've never experienced anything like it. Everything was red. Everything. For days. Until I saw you, alive. And then it went red again when I saw the fear and damage on your face." she could tell he was doing his best not to talk about the farmhouse and that basement, but she still flashed back to the moments before and after his appearance there. The moments when she simultaneously prayed to live and hoped to die.
"You don't owe me anything, Shane. I just want you in my life, and I don't care what your presence looks like. Romantic, platonic, or somewhere in between. I'm here for you. And I wouldn't have it any other way."
Shane felt the urge to wrap her arms around her boyfriend, but could not seem to move more than one arm to place her other hand on top of his. She hoped the gratitude and love behind the small, but heartfelt gesture landed. It was all she had in that moment, no matter how abundant her affection.
~~~~~~~~~~
Shane's family's arrival was a complete blur to her. It was joyous, tearful, and the happiest she'd been in a long time. The moment she opened the front door for them, she was surrounded, engulfed with hugs from her parents and siblings. They stood in their affectionate huddle for several moments before Peg waved Sy over with marked insistence. He'd been standing by, observing happily, but not wanting to intrude on the familial reunion.
When they finally dispersed, John asked the two younger men to help him bring in groceries. The women headed into Shane's bedroom for a more private setting in which to talk. Shane filled her mother and sister in the best she could given the rawness of the wounds left on her mind by the events.
She leaned against the headboard cuddling with Gabby while her mom rubbed her feet. She had insisted on doing this thing that had always comforted her children, and made them feel much better when they were younger.
"Well, I'm very proud of you, pumpkin." The girls both looked at their mother, who rather uncharacteristically hadn't spoken in some time. Shane was nonplussed. Peg elaborated.
"You survived something that many women don't. You're talking about it now, which even more women don't. You may think you're broken, but you're just a tree damaged by a storm, but standing stronger than ever." Trust her mom to lay such wisdom on her. When she felt like giving up. When she just wanted pity. When she could only see defeat. Her mother had always found a way to encourage and buoy her and show her the victory.
"Mom's right." Gabby affirmed, and it was Peg's turn to be nonplussed, as the two women, though similar in so many ways, never seemed to see eye to eye. "It's true. Shane I've seen a lot of women come into the clinic in shoes very much like yours. And trust me…some of them…they don't make it to this point. You've got a long way to go before you're fully recovered, don't get me wrong, but you'll get there. You have us. And you have Sy."
"And then there's Sy." She diverted. "How am I supposed to plan any sort of future with him when…" She looked at her mom, and hesitated. Peg rolled her eyes.
"Shane, I know what the two of you get up to when you're alone. You don't have to be shy with me."
"Still…" she took a breath and spoke. "When I can't bring myself to…sleep with him?"
"Look at him, you're kidding, right?" Gabby chided, insensitively, but recanted at the pained expression on Shane's face. "Sorry, sis. Trying to lighten the mood a touch. Too soon. But seriously, I don't think this reluctance you feel will be permanent."
"And even if it is," Peg took over, "that man is out-of-his-mind in love with you, Shaney." She kissed Shane's toe before putting a sock on her foot. "He almost seems to worship you. Now, you know how I feel about using that term outside of religious context, but that is exactly the kind of love I want for you. Devout, and unconditional."
"But, mom, I can't--"
"Did you hear me? I said 'unconditional,' sweetie." Peg interrupted. "No matter what. No matter the obstacle. No matter the distance. No matter the circumstances. Love unwavering. That's what Sy has for you. I've seen it in him. Trust the momma."
The insistence her mother placed on trust had always ruffled Shane's feathers. Gabby's too, who she could feel stiffen slightly beside her. But Shane, for once, really wanted to trust her mother, hoping against hope that she was right. And that she, herself wouldn't screw up the best relationship she had ever been in or was likely to ever be in again.
The girls had begun talking about some of the coworkers who'd brought food in the past week, and Peg couldn't resist remarking on the character of her favorites and judging the ones she didn't care for…oddly enough, getting more or less, the correct measure of them, as Shane saw it.
After what must have been an hour from the time they'd arrived, they heard a knock on the slightly ajar bedroom door. John poked his head in.
"Ladies, we've put a casserole in the oven, and completed various manly projects around the house--"
"Oh, daddy, what projects?" She cringed. She hated that the men had felt the need to "fix" things.
"Babe, your guest bathroom had not one, but two leaky faucets, your kitchen table seemed to be more of a teeter-totter, and half the light bulbs in the living room were out. Among other tiny things. You're welcome." he smirked his crooked smirk so similar to her own, and she returned it as if he was looking in a mirror.
"Thanks, dad."
"Anyway, lunch is almost ready. So, when you've finished your confab, let's eat."
Dinner passed amiably, Shane found a reserve within herself to allow some quasi-normal behavior, as long as you didn’t look too closely. She was talking animatedly with her siblings, making their parents and Sy laugh riotously. Shane noticed some odd looks passing between Sy and her father, but chalked it up to paranoia. She wished at least Gabby and Ethan could stay, but Heather would be over soon, and she deserved her own dedicated time. Shane wanted to give that to her.
She said her farewells to her family with promises to visit them the next day, and at least one more time before her siblings went back home, if she could work it out.
Sy was so wonderful the whole time. Standing by her, a hand resting lightly on her shoulder as they waved goodbye to the departing vehicle. He made her feel so safe. They went into the kitchen and cleaned up from lunch. Well, Sy cleaned. Shane was texting Heather about when she'd be over.
"Heather says she'll be here in about a half hour. She's picking up wine and pizza." Shane told Sy without looking up from her phone. She could see out of the corner of her eye, though, that he had just closed the dishwasher and was selecting a cycle.
"Sounds great. Do you want me to get out of here? Give you guys some time, one on one?" He asked as he dried his hands, wet from preparing dishes for the machine.
She thought about it, and shuddered. She played a scene in her head that startled her. In her mind's eye, she saw Sy leave and then moments later heard a knock on the door. Presuming it was Heather, she opened the door with abandon, only to see Elliott standing there under a flickering porch light, smirking maliciously at her and ready to overpower and abduct her again. She shook the thought from her head, but remained uneasy as she answered his question.
"Uh, no. Thanks. I'm sure she'll want to talk to both of us. She likes you." Shane grinned softly at Sy in an attempt to mask her trepidation over the thought of him leaving her alone for any period of time. She thought it had worked.
"Okay, well, whatever you think, sunshine. I don't wanna get in the way." He was wiping down the countertops. She felt so impossibly full of love for him, she was starting to wonder how she hadn't yet burst with it. She couldn't bear the thought of holding him back from a fulfilling relationship. He deserved everything she couldn't give him right now. And she knew she should make him leave her. Cut him loose. But she was, as she'd been since she'd met him, a weak woman. She couldn't stand the thought of being without him. Of him no longer being hers. And somehow worse, of not being his, herself. She would always need him for so many reasons, not least of which being her love for him. Maybe one day, she'd recover from this trauma, and be able to be who he deserved. To give him what he needed.
"You're never in the way, bear." She walked up behind him, wrapped her arms around his middle and squeezed him as tight as she could. He placed a loving hand over hers, sighing and smiling, though she had no visual proof of the latter. It was just a feeling.
Heather's greeting was no less exuberant than that of Shane's family, but it was more joyful and less emotional, even though she was immensely relieved to see her best friend after so long. They talked as if no time had passed, and Shane mustered up the dregs of her former self to have one more interaction for the day. Thank God it was Heather and not someone who would require more. She wouldn't have it to give.
"I am so glad you're okay, Shane! Things around the clinic have been bleak as fuck. Susan is loosing her mind, Anita is beside herself with concern, and the rest of us just plain ol' miss the hell out of you. And not just because of all of the overtime everyone has been pulling to get your patients seen."
"Oh, God, I'm so sorry! I didn't realize…wow, I'm awful. I didn't even think---"
"That you'd be missed? Think again, sister. The place would fall apart if you ever really left. But don't feel guilty. It's the least everyone can do, and they've all said it themselves. We all love you, and know that you'd do the same for any of us if you could at all. Hopefully you won't have to, though!"
Shane nodded, eyes wide in agreement. She wouldn't wish the last week of her life on her worst enemy. On the worst person in the world. Except maybe the people responsible. Tit for tat.
"Well, I'm sorry my absence has caused extra work for all of you." Shane looked into the deep glass of Chardonnay Sy had poured her from the bottle Heather had brought. She felt about as small as the air bubble making it's way up the sloping curve of the stemless vessel. She felt a guilt that she knew was fully void of logic. It made no sense for her to feel guilt for being kidnapped. But she had always had this notion, this nagging voice in her head that told her that her misfortunes were a direct result of her decisions. That she'd inadvertently stepped on the butterfly that resulted in the monsoon she was currently experiencing, and whatever cataclysmic events she would face next.
"Why in God's name are you apologizing for this, Shay?" Heather's tone was kind, but still mildly scolding.
"If I'd never been with Elliott, none of this would have--"
"Bitch, are you a fortune teller?"
"No, but--"
"Soothsayer?"
"No."
"Time traveler?"
"I wish!" Shane chuckled. But she really did wish.
"Have you any real and proven success at consistently predicting the future?"
"I don't, but--"
"No. No buts. No howevers. You had no idea what becoming involved with Elliott could have done. Were there signs, sure. But you can't look on the past as a rubric to judge the quality of your decisions. You know that. You can only learn from your mistakes. And you have."
"Heather's right, sunshine. You really have learned. You look for Elliott's behaviors in mine and shut me down quick if you see 'em. You're not going to let yourself go down that road again. And I'm proud of you for it."
Shane silently worried her wine glass. It was hard to argue with such truth. But it was hard to agree when her own feelings were in such stark opposition. So she did neither.
"Well, I've preached my sermon for the day." she laughed. "I've taken up enough of your time. Oh, your phone. It's in my purse. I think it's fully charged, but I turned it off."
Shane thanked her friend, then Heather hugged them both and took her leave.
"Y'okay, bug?" Sy asked her after what she surmised was several minutes of silence. Minutes she didn't notice as they passed.
"Mmm…" she trailed off.
"Can I do something for ya?" And she really thought about the question. He could probably do a lot of things for her. He could make love to her until she felt whole again, even if it hurt her at first. Not an ideal option. He could probably get them both some new identities and enough money to spirit her away to somewhere her past wouldn't follow. If she became someone new, literally, would she have to bring that old baggage, those old scars, with her? Again, suboptimal. But he could definitely take the source of all grief and turmoil in her life far into the Missouri back country, somewhere not even the hunters would venture, some fallow field or forgotten cistern, and end him. Snuff out his spark of life like a candle caught in a tornado. Spill a fatal amount of his monstrous blood onto the unforgiving earth and send him to the Hell to which he was undoubtedly destined. But did she want that? Did she want another soul as a scar on that of the man she so deeply cherished? He'd say it was worth it. He'd say he'd take a thousand more for her. A million. That was Sy.
"Nothing comes to mind." She lied. And he knew it was a lie, but didn't push it. She was so grateful that he respected her, not for the lie itself, but for the reason she wasn't giving him the whole truth just now.
His phone went off and he picked it up as he stood from his seat at the table. She could only hear that it was Matt, the guy she thought she understood had the car place, before she heard tension in Sy's voice. Even from the next room, she could tell something was wrong, though he was talking too quietly for her to make out words.
She heard him suddenly shout a stream of profanities that he rarely said at all around her, at least, let alone together. There was a bang, and the walls of her kitchen quaked like the tectonic plates beneath them were shifting.
Sy walked back in, his face was red, as were his knuckles. He was shaking an injury out of his hand.
"What's wrong?" she asked, deep concern at his appearance and demeanor, suddenly ominous.
"I need to fix your wall in there." he grumbled, evading, without success. She'd be doing therapy on his hand, next.
"What's really wrong?" she repeated, sternly.
"That was Matt. Elliott's…escaped, somehow. He's in the wind."
Shane's heart became so heavy, she could almost feel it smashing through the kitchen floor and burying itself deep in the cement floor of her basement.
"Oh, God! No! What if he goes to the police!?"
"Fuck that, I'm more concerned about him coming after you!"
The two stared, faces full of equal measures of concern for the other.
break a leg - but not literally - Mat Barzal NYI
Author notes: Better late than never, huh?! Thank you for the like and reblogs in the Up all night one shot, hope you guys like this one as much. Tell me if there are some grammar mistakes so I can correct, requests are open and feedback is always appreciated!
Word count: 1.531
Request/summary: Could you write about Barzy breaking his leg? Poor bby is in a ton of pain but his gf is there for him and helps him with everything? Thanks so much
When Mat woke up that morning he was on cloud nine to look at his side and see y/n. The season had started and so the away games which made the contact between the couple a little less than the usual. But being in this relationship for 2 years teach them some tricks to be together like the one in this week, where y/n was able to get the most part of her stuff done at college and some days off from work to travel with the team at least for one game.
And that’s the game where Mat was giving all his effort, coming from a loss against the Maple Leafs he was decided to win tonight and so far things were doing OK since whenever he felt nervous he would spot her pretty smile in the middle of the crowd.
Y/n was wearing the orange and blue shirt with Mathew’s number in the back, curly strands of hair eventually coming to her face, although never taking away her attention, so when Mat and Anders got close to the net she and some of the others Isles fans were already up. What they were not expecting was to things got out of control when a player from the Rangers bumped into Mat and suddenly his body was shoved in the direction of the boards, half of him taking the net from the place, puck getting lost in the mess of people around the ice and then the dead silence from everyone including the crowd.
She can almost count the seconds after when everything looks like a slow-motion movie scene and her boyfriend doesn’t get up. His body facing the ground, his stick not even close to his hands and everyone knew he wasn’t asking for it when his palm hit the ice repeatedly and he takes off his helmet.
Just like this, the game comes to a stop.
Anders crouching down beside his teammate and screaming for people to bring the doctors, voice being heard easily throw the dead silence in the arena while two Rangers players skate do the bench and bring their own doctor as fast as they can. It turns almost impossible to see Mat in the sea of players and staff members around him, she doesn’t know how much time passed until he was being lifted and placed in a stretcher. Y/n’s eyes start to glisten with tears and before she could give one more step out of her seat space Tito is in the glass making a sign for her to go to the dressing room.
Dizzy and almost crying she starts walking towards the entrance of the place already listening to Mat frantic sounds of pain.
“Mathew!!” she whisper-screamed stopping by his side. The doctor and staff taking off his shin pads while he sighed.
“This shit hurts so much” he was able to speak properly while reaching for her hand to hold.
“I’m here, I won’t leave, It’s okay” she tried to calm him down, his eyes were as glisten as hers and thought he was the one feeling the pain she could sense the ache in her heart.
But right now y/n knew she needed to pass some kind of confidence to her boyfriend, everyone around was already losing their heads and they weren’t even sure what the hell of injury was.
His face was red and the veins could be seen through his neck.
“It’s broken, we’ve gotta run the hospital as fast as possible” the old man finally said receiving a nod from the other doctor in the room.
“Fuck!” Mat muttered. “Don’t leave, don’t leave, please” he begged while gripping her hand tighter.
Y/n wasn’t aware of how much it hurts, but she would easily change place with him so that she wouldn’t need to look at his painful face.
“Babe, I won’t leave. Breathe, you need to breathe, ok?”
He nods and it takes less than five minutes to the room starts to empty once the ambulance was already waiting for them. Once again she was by his side while paramedics work their magic so Mat would feel less pain.
…
The next day when Mat woke up he wasn’t that happy with the image around. His leg was held up in the air with a white cast around it, he was dressed in hospital clothes and y/n wasn’t sleeping by his side as obvious. She was sitting in an uncomfortable position at the small couch in the room.
She spent the night?! He questions himself before trying and failing to sit, letting out a groan of pain.
“Mathew?! You’re awake. Want me to call the doctor? Are you feeling better??” y/n’s light sleep were interrupted and she was fast to jump beside his bed.
“I...I’m okay, yeah, it still hurts like hell but not as bad as last night..” he reached for her hand and before she could say something else he started again “speaking of night, you slept on that couch?! Babe, you should have just laid here with me or I don’t know, went to the hotel and get back early in the morning.”
She shakes her head no and bends down to plant a kiss in his cheekbones.
“I told you I would not leave you alone. Also, it’s impossible to sleep in peace knowing you’re in the hospital, c’mon”
He wasn’t able to contradict her knowing she was right.
“You’re hungry??”
“Starving” he sighs and she smiles.
“I’m gonna call the nurse so she can bring your meds and breakfast and buy something for me in the canteen”
“No Cheetos and Soda...actually, you ate something last night, babe?!” Mat asks and y/n looks away dodging the question and leaving the room, she knew he would flip if she told him she wasn’t capable of eating nor drinking anything.
Y/n called the nurse and bought her breakfast (some fruit salad and a big cup of coffee), eating a little too fast and right after walking back to his room.
They spent the rest of the day at the hospital, Mat occasionally watching the game he was supposed to attend today and pouting about the loss of the other night. Quoting him “I broke my leg and we didn’t even win”. It was almost midnight when he received permission to go home and so as tiring as it sounds they went to the hotel only to get their stuff and head straight to the airport, Mat needed the comfort of his home and so did y/n and since the doctor was okay with the short flight there was nothing holding the couple back.
…
One week into the healing process and Mathew was already wanting to stand up, do stuff, give y/n some headache of worry. In the first days, he enjoyed to stay in bed as long as his girl was with him, but when y/n needed to work and go to classes he would be like a lonely puppy requesting her the second she stepped in the door.
Their favorite playlist was playing while y/n prepared dinner and his meds, Mat had an appointment the next morning so he could start physiotherapy and have a better clue about his healing time process. He was supposed to be in bed and don’t put his foot in the ground at any cost, but there was Mathew jumping in one foot to the kitchen until he reaches the stools.
“Mathew Barzal!! You know you can’t keep walking around like his, damn babe…” she sighs.
“I didn’t want to be alone in the bedroom” he looks at her cutting onions and gives his best smile.
“You’re such a baby”
“I’m not into this kind o kinky, but we could try...I mean, I always thought you would prefer me as dominant you know, that daddy kinky stuff.” he jokes.
Y/n laughs out loud and he feels warm inside being the reason for her happiness and finally able to see her relax.
“You’re a walking joke!”
“Still you love me”
She rolls her eyes playfully and keeps preparing dinner.
“You know, I was wondering…” Y/n starts out of the blue.
“Mhmm”
“Last week when I told you ‘break a leg’ at the game, I didn’t mean it literally”
“C’mon, you’ve gotta be kidding me” he suppresses the laugh at her terrible joke and huffs.
“I’m gonna have to remember myself not to use expressions with you, I mean just imagine I’m telling you that I killed two birds with one stone and you actually believing I killed innocent animals.”
“Who’s the walking joke now huh?!!” he rolled his eyes and she ran to plant a kiss into his rosy lips.
They laugh softly between the kiss and y/n holds his face close. The atmosphere got hot, but before y/n could say something Mat was faster to notice it was the food in the pan.
“If you didn’t check the stove now we’re probably burning this place down and I mean it like literally” is his turn to joke.
I made some homemade "Nutella"
I don't know if I can call it low spoon cooking, because it took the blender some time to transform the nuts into nut butter (I used the time to do some physiotherapy, and stopping the blender and mixing the contents between the different parts of the rutine). I bought roasted (unsalted) hazelnuts for this, because the small price difference worth the saving of extra spoons.
Blenders are not the best for the job, but I don't have food processor, but my blender is quite strong, and it worked. When I had food processor (it broke several years ago), It was a bit easier to make. I just left it running for 10 minutes.
I based it on the recipe from "Chocolate Covered Katie"(link), but I think I changed the propositions a bit. I didn't look at the recipe much, and sort of winged it. I made the spread before, and I trusted my ability to balance the tastes.
How to:
250 gr' of rosterd hazelnuts
1 spoon of coconut oil (optional, but it might help in making the nut butter, so I added it)
1/3 cup of maple syrop
1/3 of plant based milk (I had rice-hazelnut open, so this was what I used)
1 spoonful of cocoa powder (like, I think it was about 2 tablespoons)
Pinch of salt
Combine nuts and oil in food processor or strong blender until the nuts transform into nut butter (like in the pictures on the left, It can take time). Add other ingredients, and blend until ready.
Store in clean container in the refrigerator. It can also be kept in the freezer.
Alone, Together | Chapter 8 | Morgan Rielly
A/N: This is a little bit of filler / a little bit of insight into Bee, but I promise things are going to pick up a bit from here :) Thank you again for all your lovely asks, comments, reblogs, and more! A quick reminder that I respond to all messages and asks about my fics, so if you have any questions or comments, don’t be afraid to send them my way.
It was the Toronto Maple Leafs’ home opener.
Despite an essay being due that day at 5pm, and despite another assignment being due in two days, one worth a whopping 40% of her mark, Bee had promised Morgan she would be there. ‘It would mean a lot to me’ he had told her one night after they had finished a steamy round of sex at her place. ‘It would mean the world to me if you could be there.’
How could she say no to him as she was wrapped up in his arms and entangled with his body? How could she say no when his voice was so soft, his intentions so pure, his heart so full? How could she say no to watching him do what he loved? It was the easiest yes she ever told someone. The biting of his lip to suppress his earnest smile afterwards made her want to blow him for the entire fucking night if it meant the smile never left his face.
Bee always had five-year plans. They began when she was eleven years old and browsing the internet at her local public library about how to live apart from an alcoholic parent. Almost all of the websites she found talked about living with another relative, but she didn’t have any. Then the words ‘legal emancipation’ came up. This was Bee’s first five-year plan: document everything her mother did (or, in reality, didn’t do) to have a case in court that she should be withdrawn from her mother’s parental control. She was successful. Because Bee voluntarily withdrew parental support and left home, her mother wasn’t legally obligated to support her – which was exactly what she wanted. No more contact with a mother who would spend money on alcohol instead of food or decent shelter. No more obligations to a mother who, by her own inaction, forced Bee to start fending for herself at an age most kids were still playing with dolls or kitchen sets. No more vulnerability exposed to a woman whose severe alcoholism didn’t make her care at all about her own daughter, however wanted or unwanted she was. No more addiction. No more alcohol.
Once she was legally emancipated from her mother, Bee’s second five-year plan, which spanned ages 17-21, came into effect: get into university, then get into grad school. She got a job as a cashier at a grocery store and worked after school and weekends to earn enough money to rent out a room in the basement of a house near her school. She got letters of reference from her teachers for little-known scholarships not many people would be applying to. She maintained a high enough average that U of T gave her an academic scholarship to cover about half her tuition. When she won the other scholarships, she was safe in knowing her tuition would be covered and she wouldn’t have to incur debt or other loans.
She was currently in the middle of her third five-year plan: get into grad school, graduate with a job offer, and work. At 22 years old, she was on the right path to achieving it. If all went well – which it had to – her fourth five-year plan would come into effect: work hard to get at least one promotion, save enough money, and buy a place.
The plans were contingent on some things working out for her – like keeping her current apartment at the rent she was already paying and getting a job as soon as January when she didn’t have to attend classes anymore – but she knew she would be able to do it. She worked hard so that everything ‘worked out’ before. There was no reason it couldn’t work out again. And again.
What the plans were not contingent on was her meeting someone. They were not contingent meeting Morgan Rielly of West Vancouver, British Columbia, and actually becoming, as corny as it sounded, completely smitten with him. The plans did not include making out on his couch for hours, falling asleep in his bed while watching Netflix, or having a game on in the background while she marked. The plans did not include spending a good three hours researching everything to do with hockey and the Toronto Maple Leafs so she could, even just slightly, begin to understand his life.
But she was letting him in. Fast. He was quickly becoming a part of her life, an established part of her life. So established, apparently, that she agreed to go to his home opening game without so much as a second thought.
The energy inside Scotiabank Arena was palpable. Bee cheered and clapped along with the rest of the fans, family members, wives, and girlfriends in attendance as the announcer was introducing the team. She made sure to scream extra loud when Morgan’s name was called, and she noticed how loud the arena got when John Tavares was announced. From beside her, John’s wife Aryne couldn’t stop filming the reaction. They were opening their season against the Montreal Canadiens, and Bee knew she had to boo them because they were one of the team’s oldest rivals. A Canadiens player scored the first goal, but the energy wasn’t sucked out of the building at all. In fact, it came right back about three minutes later when Auston scored a goal to tie it. When Aryne pointed out that Morgan got an assist on the goal, Bee screamed even louder.
When the first period ended, Bee remembered that she had twenty minutes to spare before the second began. As she watched some of the other wives and family members get up to go to the washroom, she looked down at her messenger bag and then to Aryne. She wondered if it was appropriate to take out her laptop and work in between periods. Did anyone else ever do that? She was sure that in the entire history of hockey, there had to be one girl who took out a book or notebook or laptop and focused her attention on something other than hockey. Getting an education never looked bad, right? “Aryne…”
“Yeah babe?” she answered absent-mindedly while looking down at her phone.
“Do you think…I mean would it look bad…” Bee began.
Aryne finished typing her text before locking her phone and looking at Bee. “Would what look bad?”
“I…have…I have homework,” Bee said, completely embarrassed.
“Oh my God! Are you joking! Take that stuff out right now!” Aryne cried. “You have homework? What are you working on?”
“Richard Thaler’s theory of behavioural economics.”
“You take it out right now and start working,” Aryne demanded like a mother. “You’ll be setting a good example. Some of these girls need to be doing homework instead of filming themselves drinking wine for the Instagram stories.”
Bee snorted. “You’re something else, Aryne.”
“I’m being serious. I’m trying to be less judgemental as a whole, but I still can’t help but feel snippy about dropping out of school to be an Instagram model with a YouTube channel,” she said. “I went to McMaster and got a bachelor of science in kinesiology, then I got my Master’s from Queen’s in physiotherapy. All while John was playing hockey in New York. You don’t need to be shy about breaking out a laptop with a 100-page PDF because I know that feeling.”
Bee couldn’t help but think back to what Angie had expressed when she and Mason found out Bee was dating a hockey player. ‘All those girls wearing Aritzia on King West, all those Instagram model girls are looking for people like him.’ Yet she was the one here for Morgan, not an Instagram model. Were things changing? Was it still out of the realm of possibility in this day and age, where so many people went to university, that a hockey player could date a girl smarter than him, with two degrees? Aryne proved it wasn’t an anomaly. So did Alannah. She was sure other women did too. She wasn’t so out of place after all, was she?
“Okay, thanks Aryne,” Bee smiled, not feeling as bad about it anymore as she dug into her bag to get her laptop.
“I’m going to run to the washroom but I can grab you something if you want?” Aryne asked as she stood up from her seat. “Some wine, maybe? Behavioural economics sounds…tedious.”
“I’ll be okay. Thanks though.”
As Aryne left, Bee focused her attention on exactly what Aryne had predicted: a PDF about behavioural economics that was required reading for the assignment she was working on. Family members around her mixed and mingled with each other as she zoned in, conceptualizing the theory in her head and adding some notes to her assignment. She knew she wasn’t going to get the entire thing done within the two intermissions she would be given, but it helped. Anything helped.
During the second period, John Tavares scored his first goal as a Maple Leaf and the entire arena, including Aryne, went nuts. She couldn’t stop jumping and dancing around, and she even stood on her seat and stretched up to high-five John’s parents, who were sitting two rows above them. And though the game went into overtime, it was poetic justice when Auston Matthews scored the game winner. It couldn’t have been a more perfecting ending, a more perfect start to the season. The Leafs beat their rivals.
Bee could start to understand, at the most miniscule scale, how and why people loved hockey so much. If they got to feel like this because of the team on any given basis, she would be a die-hard fan too. She knew there were probably some not-so-great times, and she knew sports were a lot more complicated than this simple understanding she had right now, but it was interesting to see this side of things – this world she didn’t have privy too growing up, or even now. If she hadn’t have met Morgan, she didn’t think she would have ever been able to experience this. It was fun and exciting and confusing and daunting all at once – much like everything else in her life up until this point. After having to figure out life and survival on her own, having people like Morgan, Ashley, Alannah, and Aryne to guide her into this new foray was a welcome blessing.
When the game was finished, Bee followed everybody backstage where they patiently waited for the boys to be done with interviews and other post-game happenings. Bee was chatty with Ashley and Alannah when they boys started to file out. Like the pre-season game, when Morgan made his way through the doorway, his hair was a dishevelled mess. He looked so cute. He immediately found her in the crowd of people and made his way over.
“Hey,” he greeted her with a smile, bending down to kiss her quickly. She still had his jersey on and, stereotypically, it was his favourite look on her. The way her brown hair fell over the letters of his last name somehow drove him crazy.
“What a game!” she smiled excitedly. “Auston’s first goal! And you assisted!”
“I know, Bee.”
“And then John! First one as a Leaf! Then overtime! Auston again!” she recounted the game to him as if he wasn’t there.
He nodded his head and his smile got wider with every exclamation from her. “You’re buzzin’ right now,” he laughed. “Buzzin’ like a bumblebee.” Seeing her so giddy about a game of hockey made him ecstatic.
“It was a great game!” she adjusted her bag on her shoulder. “The crowd loved it too!”
“Did you bring homework?” he asked unexpectedly as he noticed her bag.
“Y…Yes?” she answered apprehensively. “Remember how I told you I have that assignment all about behavioural economics…” she tried to explain herself.
“Atta girl,” he whispered, dipping down to kiss her again. “You ready to go? Wanna come over mine?”
She shook her head at his request. “I’ve got class at nine in the morning tomorrow,” she explained. She thought about whether or not she should add the second part. “You want to…uh…come over mine instead?”
“See ya guys later,” Morgan announced to everyone, giving a big wave to everyone before grabbing Bee’s hand and pulling her along with him. She laughed, knowing this is the exact same exit strategy he took last time when they left during the pre-season game.
As they made their way to the Scotiabank Arena’s underground parking lot, Morgan continued to hold her hand until they got to his car. Ever the gentleman, he opened the door for her before walking around and getting into the driver’s seat. He started the car, but instead of backing out of his parking space, he just looked at Bee. When she noticed they weren’t moving, she looked over to see him staring. “What’s wrong?” she asked.
“C’mere,” he whispered. She leaned over the centre console and he kissed her gently, bringing his hand up underneath her shin. He gave her a few more kisses. “Thank you for being here,” he whispered.
“It was a lot of fun,” she reiterated her sentiments from earlier.
“I know, but I really mean it,” he said. “I get how you like to be alone so I know it’s a lot for you to come to these things. I know it takes a lot of like, energy or whatever, especially for introverts, to be around big groups of people…so thank you,” he whispered.
With every kiss and with every comment like that he made to her, it was getting harder and harder for her to ‘take things slow’ and ‘not put a label on it’. Her words. She was humbly aware that they had only met in late July. She was humbly aware that since then, in all of their interactions and dates and adult-themed sleepovers, they hadn’t fought once. She was humbly aware that with each passing day, he was carving out a place in her life she hadn’t made room for; one that he nestled into comfortably, without disruption, without fanfare. Like he was always meant to be there.
She was also humbly aware that with each passing day, now that the season had started, it was going to get harder. She would miss him when he was gone. She wouldn’t be able to see him as often because of traveling, or because of practice, or because of the schedule of game days.
“I’ll always come and support you,” she said. “I know you’d do the same if I played hockey too or whatever. Plus most of the girls are great. They’re very warm and welcoming and it doesn’t feel…I don’t know, tiring to be there, or be with them. I might have to ask you for some extra tickets sometime though so I can bring Angie and Mason.”
“You just tell me when,” he gave her one last quick kiss before finally reversing out of the spot.
When they finally arrived back at Bee’s apartment, Morgan undressed while she washed her face and brushed her hair in the washroom. He stripped down to only his boxers before getting into her bed, lying down with the covers half-draped over his body.
“I thought your backcheck was good tonight,” she said from the washroom.
Morgan couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Did the word ‘backcheck’ just leave her mouth? In the right way? In the appropriate context? “Um, excuse me?”
“You heard me,” she said as she appeared in the doorway, brushing her hair and sweeping it over one shoulder. “Your backcheck was good. Like, I know you’re a defenseman, so that’s kind of your job…I think…but I looked for it tonight and thought it looked good. Better than the pre-season game I went to.”
“Who are you and what have you done with Briony McTavish?”
“Shut up!” she giggled, throwing her hairbrush back into the washroom before making her way towards the bed.
When she climbed in, Morgan’s grabby-hands went into full effect, guiding her body towards his. He only meant to cuddle and be close to her, but Bee took it as an invitation to climb on top of him. He wasn’t exactly complaining. “Where’d you learn all that?” he asked. Despite being genuinely curious, he couldn’t help but be more interested in the feeling of her straddling him on her bed. His hands caressed her exposed thighs and squeezed at the flesh. Her pajama shorts were riding high. Morgan licked his lips at the thought of what they could get up to. He wondered if she could feel him getting hard beneath her.
“I studied,” she grazed her fingertips lightly over his chest.
“You what?”
“Mhm,” she giggled slightly. “It’s what I do best, Morgan. I researched and I studied. I even know who Mike Babcock is now.”
“Well you know what…” he said, his hands wandering from her thighs to her hips, grabbing at the flesh there, too. If it were up to him he would grow extra arms to be able to touch every inch of her body. “I studied too.”
“You did?”
“Mhm.”
“And what did you learn?”
He gave her a look. “Macroeconomics.”
She giggled at the tone he used, how nefarious the look on his face was. “Oh.”
“I have something even better,” he winked. He propped himself up so he could get even closer to her. He gave her a quick peck on the lips before continuing. “Microeconomics.”
She snorted, unable to hold in her giggles. “Talk dirty to me, baby.”
“Be careful what you wish for,” he mumbled as he began kissing her, leaving a trail along her jawline to her ear. His hands traveled to her thighs again, but this time slipped in between the gaps of her shorts. “Karl Marx,” he continued, biting down on her skin.
“You know how to make a girl horny, don’t you?” she tried her hardest to stop laughing, but her attempt was futile.
“The proletariat and the bourgeoisie,” Morgan continued.
“Oh my God Morgan,” she chastised him. He was beginning to sound like a first-year economics student who thought they already knew everything. He bit down on the skin of her neck while simultaneously slipping his hands underneath her shirt, pulling it up. “Morgan.”
He kissed his way back up to her ear. “Alan Greenspan.”
“NO!” she exclaimed immediately. The mention of Alan Greenspan definitely did not get her off. She broke out into a fit of laughter. “ABORT MISSION!”
“AH!” the look on Morgan’s face was one of pure fear. “Oh, um, KEYNESIAN ECONOMICS!”
“Yes! That’s better!”
“Social safety net!” he exclaimed again.
She began to cackle from laughing so hard at the absurdity of it all. She fell beside him, giggling like a man woman. She could feel her eyes well with tears for how hard she was laughing. “There’s something wrong with you,” she managed to giggle out.
“Stop trying to get me to lose my momentum!” he accused her. His large body hovered over hers as his hand found her hips again. He began kissing her again; light feathery kisses along her jawline and neck as his fingertips traced their way along the elastic band of her shorts. “I’m trying to seduce you here.”
“It works when you mention Karl Marx and the proletariat.”
“Oh yeah?” he smirked at her response. She nodded her head. “I gotta brush up on my reading of the Communist Manifesto then.”
“I’m more of a Das Kapital girl myself.”
Morgan rolled his eyes. “Okay, who’s getting the economics degree here again?” he posed the question, garnering another laugh from her. “Should I start signing up for classes? Don’t start treating me like one of your first-year students.”
“I don’t know,” Bee rolled her eyes playfully. “Might get to boss you around a little bit.”
Morgan’s eyes lit up. “I like the sound of that. Gives me an uprising in my pants.”
Bee cackled again, pushing his body off her. Morgan collapsed onto her side, laughing at the silliness of it all. The mood was ruined but her heart was full. She couldn’t believe it. “You’re something else, Morgan Rielly.”
