Yesterday, I went to my older brother's girlfriend's afternoon tea party - a belated birthday celebration that was also partly for her sister

Unfortunately I had a migraine, but it all went OK. Older brother's girlfriend wasn't very pleased with it, having been to previous afternoon teas, and found it to be disorganised and chaotic. This was my very first afternoon tea, so I thought it was OK. Older brother's girlfriend pointed out that there are supposed to be a selection of teas at an afternoon tea, but the only options were English Breakfast (normal tea) and coffee 🫖🍵☕

There was me, older brother, middle sister, older brother's girlfriend, her mum, her dad, her sister, her hyperactive and excitable niece and her adorable baby nephew (he was so calm and happy all the time and never cried once - he also had really big brown eyes). There were also some friends that are mutual between older brother, his girlfriend, and middle sister, and the friends' young sons - their mum is pregnant with their third baby. The kids mainly watched cartoons on a tablet (Lucas The Spider and what looked like a cross between Sonic and Paw Patrol - like a fox with Sonic eyes but Paw Patrol-style animation)

Due to allergies, I got my own special tea 😊

I don't usually drink ordinary coffee but the coffee here was nice (I do like frappes and such though)

Sandwiches from left to right:

Chicken, bacon and mayonnaise 🍗🥓⚪ - I only ate about half of it

Ham and tomato 🥩🍖🍅 - my autistic ass took the tomatoes off and it was OK

Cheese 🧀 - can't go wrong with a plain cheese sandwich

Tuna and cucumber 🐟🥒 - didn't get eaten. The smell of cucumber has always made me feel ill

Currant scone - I don't normally do currants but the scone with Anchor butter, strawberry jam and clotted cream was quite nice. I even mixed the remaining strawberry jam and clotted cream together and ate that

Cakes - note the allergy safe choices and lack of macarons

The orange thing is a fondanty, creamy dessert with dark chocolate decorations 🍊🍫

The chocolate dessert is chocolate and ginger, sort of truffly, probably the best one 🍫🫚

The reddish-pink one is a raspberry and white chocolate cake slice ❤️🩷💖🤍⬜

And the other one is apple pie 🍎🥧

I also got ice cream - salted caramel and honeycomb 🤎🧡🍯 It was SO nice but that and the drive home afterwards, mixed with the migraine... not good 🤢

Almost everyone at this tea party was nerdy/alternative and either neurodivergent or suspected of being. Most of the conversation was about video games, but at one point the conversation was just Father Ted quotes (especially Father Jack)

Brother's girlfriend's mum also gave everyone two big cake slices each - cherry and rum cake 🍒🍹🍰🎂 and a chocolate cake that's dairy-free 🍫🍰🎂

Middle sister is 29 years old but still acts like an edgy teenager. She still wants to drink and party non-stop when most of her friends are settling down. My 19-year-old younger sister says she acts more mature than middle sister does - it's like their ages are reversed

Middle sister still also does 'edgy' things for attention, combined with regressing into a toddler-like state, which is worse when she's drunk

The little kids all got given paper bags with farm animals to colour in, with red, yellow, green and blue crayons. Middle sister wanted one too, so brother's girlfriend's mum got her one

It started out OK. She coloured the cow in blue. We discussed Blue Cow from Story Makers and sang the song.

Then she drew a nosebleed on the cow and said 'It's a coke addict cow!'

Then she fucking drew a NAZI FLAG on the barn 🤦🏻‍♀️ and said 'It's Animal Farm!'

I've never read Animal Farm but they at least pretended to be an equal society in that, so not really applicable to something as blatantly horrific as Nazi Germany

And her friend was laughing. Dude, she's 29. If it was an edgy teenager and it was a one-off thing then you'd understand it somewhat, but this is a grown woman who still wants to party and is either a teenager or a toddler. When I told Mum about it later, she said she was 'attention-seeking' but Mum says really horrible, bigoted things all the time. Also, my sister didn't bother finishing colouring in after that

trying to enjoy the brief window of non-snowbound landscapes in my area by engaging in amateur geology and botony: a shitty field guide to the side of the hill i can see out my window

What its says on the tin. The tundra is hostile, rough terrain ass landscape where the lack of trees or cover makes this doofus ass qallunaat feel like a little mouse about to get swooped down on by a bird of prey. That said my cardio is a little better and I can't spend the summer just taking walks to the airport so i downloaded a plant ID app and took it up the hill towards the lake/reservoir

this hill. but instead of a majestic sunset it was threatening to drizzle (and did profusely on the way home)

I found this map on gov of canada's website and guess-timated about where I was during this jaunt. Basically this patch is on the southwest facing side of the hill, where there is some shallow boggy silty dirt covering the bedrock interspersed with a ton of boulders.

A little grass, and flowers. Despite the thinness of the soil the mossier patches hold water really well making it really easy to take a step andd land in a springy soggy patch

Pre Cambrian bedrock. Old as balls. Like 2 billion years old. I want this info to move me more, to experience wonder, but these juts of dark, rounded rock are everywhere here. More lichen with patches of moss

on to the flowers. Caveat that these are the best guess of my app, and i am not a plant expert

A Rhododendron, *probably* the Canadian Rhododendron. Its get confusing when the the azaleas show are a huge puffy bush and every plant here creeps a few inches from the ground. It like consistently damps soil which might make it a good indicator of which bits of ground are secretly planning to make my shoes soggy

Pincushion Plant or Arctic Diapensia. If I was a *good* fake botanist I would have brought a little ruler for scale bc a lot of these plants are dinky little guys. Apparently these are circumpolar, and I probably saw them the most so they gotta be very successful at what they do

Hookers Mountain Avens, the national flower of Iceland and the plant of our neighbors in the Northwest Territories. An old ass species that apparently has been so prevalent between between ice ages that it's pollen almost acts like a sedimentary layers in ice cores and helps date them :o

White arctic mountain heather or arctic bell heather. I don't know if the silver sprigs are part of the same plant, or a different heather. Apparently a very resinous evergreens that making good kindling even went wet, which is good to know if I ever get lost out there, I guess!

Moss campion. Also popular down south in rock gardens as they are pretty low maintenance. App notes thier long lives span as individuals in Alaska have been found to be over 200 years old. I am going to have to look up if a layperson can date them, moss doesn't seem like it would have tree rings?

Clubmoss? This one I'm not sure of, the examples in the app looked much greener. It kinda looks like it might be some kind of heather. Or a lonely patch of the next one:

Juniper Haircap an evergreen moss. Those are not flowers but modified leaves on the male plants.

Not seen out on the land yet but the hot air coming out the vents of the office building adjacent to my apartment complex has cultivated some early Fireweed, the showstopper imo of the arctic windflower season :)
