It’s Pow Wow season in the Native American Community. Google it and find one near you. I spent a week in Standing Rock during the pipeline conflict. To really know them is to love them. Through the years I’ve used a lot of different brands of Cameras, lenses and lights for all kinds of assignments. However, I’ve always enjoyed all my friends in the photo industry and always kept in touch even if I wasn’t using their products. Late in 2021 my friend at TamronAmericas came to me with a lens she thought I would be very interested in and the transition started the 35-150 F2-2.8 Tamron lens opened a whole new world for me, it was a Sony mount and I didn’t use Sony cameras. Another friend at Sony made me an offer I couldn’t refuse so now I’m a Sony user! My lighting was much too big and cumbersome for on the go photoshoots, so another long time friend from 8x10 film days now at Profoto said I have some you may like!! Famous last words! So armed with all this gear I really enjoy using I’m off to photograph a magazine cover shoot and I couldn’t be happier with my choice and also my friends who always have my back!! My quest with #photographingamerica🇺🇸 is to never photograph models,only real people doing what they do everyday. This is Albert Thorn a cattle rancher from West Texas. Albert and his wife Sheri invited me into their home to show me Sheri’s vintage John Deere collection. Meeting real people telling me about their lives is priceless to me. A few years back I had the pleasure of meeting Douglas Kirkland and under terrible lighting made this portrait. Douglas was an icon photographing Marilyn Monroe and so many of Hollywood’s greatest celebrities. October 2, 2022 the photo world lost Douglas! His iconic images will live on forever. McDowell County in southern West Virginia was at one time the largest producer of coal in WV. Since mines are slowly closing, these small towns are feeling the pain with businesses closing and unemployment. This has put this county on the list of the poorest county in the US. It’s sad and not only does it affects people, it also affects the ability to care for pets. This stray dog looked at me with sad eyes. I stopped and I happened to have some of my dogs food in my truck. I was welcomed with a tail wag! I sat down gave her the food and kept her company for awhile before going further south for a visit with a new friend to make some photos. “When you rub shoulders with the poor it will change your life” Please reach out to people in need in your own area. On November 20, 2016 I made this image at 6:20pm. This beautiful Native American woman one of the elders and I were walking to join the rest of the elders at the sacred fire. We talked along the way of how things were coming to a head with the oil company and the pipeline. She was kind enough to let me photograph her in the evening light. She commented about my willingness to listen and not just randomly photograph the situation and invited me to photograph and attend ceremonies that others could not. Two days later I was involved in a violent confrontation on the bridge over the river, a night I’ll never forget.. Rubber bullets, teargas, fire hoses putting water on protesters under sub freezing temperatures. Standing Rock still faces water pollution problems today!
