I love being out West and I love Westerns, the quintessential form of the American morality play. There are few places, if any, that capture the essence of the American West than Monument Valley in Utah. The Valley has served as the backdrop to countless film landscapes, most notably John Ford's Westerns with John Wayne in the lead. I've been there twice. The first time we were heading home from Las Vegas by car and basically stumbled on the Valley. I saw a little crooked sign saying Monument Valley was 3 miles ahead, which I could not believe but there it was. We stopped for lunch at the Navajo Indian managed site and ate a great lunch. I grabbed a quick snapshot of the famous geologic formations and then we were back on the road. A few years later, Parker and I returned to the Valley and stayed a couple of nights in a small cabin that overlooked the famous buttes. This time I had my full Nikon kit and tripod and was able to set up to capture the evening light as it bathed the Valley. I took dozens of photos as the light changed and this one was my favorite. The next day we rode horses down into the Valley, which was a real treat. I brought along a small Canon point and shoot for some close ups.
