I originally was going to make this a comic, but then realized I don't have the skill, time, nor motivation to execute it so it's a textpost now. Anyway.
I was thinking about Dual Destinies (again) and about what would happen if Clay were the defendant rather than the victim-- but the more I started playing around with this tweak the more things got out of hand and now I'm effectively looking at a rewrite
The first change is in the setting: Aura / Simon / Metis / Athena / Clay were all working / living at a rehabilitation center connected to the prison system. Thematically I prefer it to the space theme, it puts a lot more ambiguity on the situation with Metis and Athena (since raising ur child in a correctional facility is. Questionable.), and imo psychologists make more sense working at a prison than like. Nasa.
Clay isn't an astronaut in this AU, but instead some kind of guard / bailiff. This gives us a chance to interact with him in the game itself (he's the one bringing witnesses from the courthouse and he's at the detention center) so we get to actually see him and care about him a little bit more. I'm imagining he gets the job as the guard in the corner of the room in the detention center and if you "examine" that spot as Apollo you'll get some flavor text about him waving to you or smth. Either way, the last case starts with Clay getting a promotion and being responsible for some of their more dangerous / high profile criminals
He calls Apollo shortly after in a complete panic, saying he's been accused of murdering his charge and that he's so so so sorry because he knows how personal this is, but he needs Apollo's help. Apollo immediately agrees to defend him, trying to get him to calm down and just explain. Clay finally admits that the reason he was so nervous about calling Apollo specifically is because the victim of this case is Kristoph Gavin
Apollo decides to set off on his own immediately, because while he does trust Phoenix way more now, the subject of Kristoph is a really sore point for him and he doesn't want Phoenix involved. Klavier, who was banned from prosecuting the case for Conflict of Interest reasons, joins him because he is also extremely invested in this case For Reasons and he has trust issues about it For Reasons. They end up getting Clay declared innocent and in the process of investigating find the lighter, which basically shatters Apollo's already fragile trust in Phoenix because What Do You MEAN the random girl you mysteriously hired is related to the Kristoph case What Are You Hiding Now. The hostage situation with Aura happens in the same way, but this time Klavier forces his way onto the prosecution with Apollo as his co-counsel because the two of them are PISSED
The idea is for Athena to be her own defense, but she's so emotionally rattled that she needs a co-counsel. To Aura's shock and horror, Simon says he'll do it. When she says he's a prosecutor and he can't, he counters that this is a fake trial anyway so the rules don't really apply. The trial is extremely emotionally driven because it's super personal for everyone involved and is just an absolute goddamn disaster. I haven't figured out anything with the phantom yet or how all this ties together, but that's a problem for later
#ace attorney#dual destinies#rewrite#more like an au kinda deal but w/e#mod vex#this was a minor change i was playing around with that got WILDLY out of hand#textpost

So, I'm sleepless at 1am and I'm tired and I'm upset so I'm going to get out the shit that has been going on for me the past month and a half, because it keeps leaking out in tags and I guess maybe I should not do that. This is going to be long and it's a huge bummer. I just don't feel like I can come out and talk about it directly to anyone because it is indeed a huge bummer and I just. can't deal with like. the feeling of unloading this on someone and then what. but throwing it into the tumblr void and hiding it behind cuts feels less like I'm throwing a bunch of gross stuff at someone's feet so like, yeah. Content warnings for uh, facing the mortality of aging parents, the American healthcare system being a fucking nightmare, mentions of strokes, infections, and other huge medical problems, and basically stuff being awful.
I have lived with my mom as her caregiver for the past three years, since losing my job during covid. She is six years in remission from breast cancer, diabetic, and in end stage renal failure, meaning her kidneys don't work and she needs hemodialysis 3 days a week. I came in mostly to do things like shopping, the majority of cooking and cleaning, be present in case of falls, things like that. It's worked out, mostly. It sucks that she had to move to AZ to live near her brother simply due to the fact that her cozy little house in MT that she got remodeled to her needs has no dialysis centers within an hour's drive and the closest ones had no open seats anyway, not even for a summer stay, because of the nationwide nursing and technician shortage in healthcare. So she lives in AZ and goes to dialysis 10 minutes away. It works out, sorta. But. Since August 1st:
she had a stroke, which affected the language centers of her brain and made speech, writing, and complex communication difficult
she spent a week in neuro ICU for follow up; this was at a hospital 20 miles away in Phoenix. yes I drove there every day to see her.
she was transferred to a rehabilitation center after that week, where she had several good days but then started to experience severe lower back pain.
the back pain got so severe that she was crying and even screaming when being helped into/out of bed, or having the head of the bed elevated so she could eat.
myself and her other present family were very upset about this, because she was in pain! and also it was preventing progress in her PT/OT after the stroke! we wanted them to do something and find out what was going on!
an xray was done. "no significant findings."
we asked for a CT scan or MRI if an xray found nothing.
it didn't happen. maybe insurance said no, maybe assumptions were made that it wasn't necessary.
but mom spent the rest of her 15 days at that rehab facility on tylenol and then oxycodone.
she was then discharged, and yet in no state to come home.
we found a short-term care facility for her that she'd actually stayed at after her initial ER stay that discovered her renal failure. we thought that she'd do okay there.
she didn't. she declined. she was still in severe pain. MWF for her dialysis, she was basically just, done. and they had scheduled her dialysis at 6am. so. the day was just over, no ability for therapy.
they still just gave her oxycodone so even on good days she was sleeping a lot and very out of it.
we asked to speak to the physician and her case worker. we were not able to.
we asked for her to get further testing instead of just this pattern of throwing narcotics at her and watching her decline. it didn't happen.
at the end of her second week there, she was becoming less responsive and more inclined to just sleep.
she wasn't eating. I tried so hard to encourage her to eat, I even fed her. she still would eat a few bites and then be uninterested in more.
one day she only ate a cup of yogurt.
then she was so badly out of it and barely responsive that I demanded that they do something. so they gave her narcan. because maybe she was too lost in the oxycodone sauce. didn't help, they gave her more. didn't help. they called EMTs.
she ended up in the ER, where they did a CT, MRI, and bloodwork.
(this was a week ago)
turns out she has an infection in her spine. which is osteomyelitis, an infection in the bone and bone marrow that just constantly hurts. oh also numerous pressure sores, including a bad one on her heel, and a bad one on her lower back. either could have introduced the infection into her spine.
that infection has spread to her blood. yeah she's got sepsis.
she also has had at least one additional stroke and her speech has degraded even further.
she spent several days in the ICU and it was very touch and go.
it is still very touch-and-go but she's now in progressive care (pcu) which is a downgrade from ICU in terms of how serious.
but yeah. sepsis is very dangerous for young and relatively healthy people. she is 74. her diabetes means her healing is very slow. her renal failure means that her system can't handle a heavy load of antibiotics so they have to be given more spaced out and in lower doses.
it. sucks.
I still go to see her every day and talk to her even if she's not responding. I sing songs she knows. I put on videos of the church services in her hometown for her to listen to. - it. sucks. so. much.
oh yeah also her place here in AZ is in a retirement park and I can only be here because she resides here. so if something happens even in terms of her moving her permanent residence elsewhere I can't stay here.
I have no income I basically just lived here with her and she covered my expenses as my pay for being her caregiver. so like. looks at the potential need to get independent housing, looks at bank account with $30 in it, laughs darkly and decides I can't think about that.
besides I need to think about how this could be the last time I have left with my mom.
it. sucks.

3 women
I've wanted to watch this one for a long time, and it did not disappoint.
a short synopsis: shy, unassuming Pinky (Sissy Spacek) becomes obsessed with her new coworker, the vain and self confident Millie (Shelley Duvall) while working at a physical rehabilitation spa. after they become roommates, Pinky's obsession with Millie becomes all consuming.
it's the 1970s, somewhere in the desert along that unclear line between sun bleached Arizona and southern California. if you've taken 10 between Phoenix and LA, you know the look.
I love the details of scene and setting: Millie's mustard Pinto and yellow outfits and how she repeatedly shuts her skirt in the door of the car as she's in a hurry to drive off somewhere. Pinky of course wearing mostly pink, her wardrobe becoming more saturated and risqué as her alternate personality emerges. the reoccurrence of water in the desert--in the echoing pools of the rehabilitation center where Millie and Pinky work, and as a rippling obstructive overlay on Billie's murals at the bottom of the motel swimming pool.
Spacek is delightfully eerie and strange and childish, Duvall ensnares both overconfidence and insecurity, and the two are a comedic odd couple sleeping next to each other in twin beds for the first half of the movie. in the second half, the story changes: the tone becomes menacing, the power dynamic between Pinky and Millie flips, and the third woman emerges. it's not the same movie as the first half, but it's still good--it raises questions, but offers no answers. while the first half of 3 Women showcases comedy and improvisation between Spacek and Duvall, the second half hones the painterly edge of the image. it feels intuitive, fluid, and ultimately unresolved.

Trauma Care Centers Market Size To Reach USD 26.9Bn By 2030
Trauma Care Centers Market Growth & Trends
The global trauma care centers market size is expected to reach USD 26.9 billion by 2030, according to a new report by Grand View Research. It is expected to expand at a CAGR of 7.53% from 2023 to 2030. The market is expected to be driven by the factors such as the rising number of trauma cases and the growing utilization of trauma care services among the pediatric and geriatric population. Additionally, the growing number of trauma care centers globally is expected to boost the growth of the market during the forecast period.
Growing incidence of injuries and falls and increasing demand for trauma care have led to a gradual increase in the number of standalone and hospital-owned trauma care centers. Many established hospitals are having dedicated trauma care departments to provide emergency medicine to people injured due to burns, road traffic accidents, and other injuries.
Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the market growth owing to the delay in elective procedures, postponement in non-urgent treatments in hospitals, reduction in outpatient visits, and unnecessary emergency department visits. According to an article published in BMC, the initial stages of the pandemic were associated with a 32.5% decline in trauma patient volumes and different injury patterns at 85 trauma centers in a multiple states system.

Trauma Care Centers Market Report Highlights
On the basis of facility type, the in-house segment dominated the market in 2021 in terms of revenue. This can be attributed to the presence of specialized in-house trauma care in acute care hospitals
By trauma type, the falls segment held the largest revenue share in 2021 owing to the rise in the prevalence of severe to moderate injuries caused due to falls
Based on service type, outpatient services held the largest share in terms of revenue in 2022 due to better access to care and better reimbursements
North America held the largest share in terms of revenue in 2022 owing to the presence of high-quality and well-established trauma care centers and rising cases of road accidents and sport-related injuries
India and China, the two emerging economies in the Asia Pacific region, have observed rapid economic expansion and an increase in healthcare spending. The need for sophisticated trauma treatment is anticipated to grow in these countries in the coming years as a result of rising disposable income
The companies operating in the market are seeking accreditations from the authorities to stay competitive in the market. For instance, in September 2019, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue received provisional status to operate as a Level II Trauma Center for Pediatrics. The emergency trauma room serves children aged 15 and below

Brad had fun visiting Phoenix. He officially asked Linsey to be his girlfriend. What did she say? She said yes immediately. How was his sobriety going? It was going well! He found a sponsor to keep him accountable, while also being someone to talk to about anything. Jeff was a little older than him. He was thirty years old and had a couple of years of sobriety. During one of their meetings, he told him the story of how he became addicted to drugs.
It started when he was twenty-five, somewhere around there. He was working at a furniture warehouse unloading the trucks that came in. Something happened and he injured his back. He couldn’t remember how it happened, though it was likely due to carelessness. His doctor prescribed OxyContin for his pain. He didn’t know he was addicted to it until he had to stop taking it.
At the time, he was married with a six-year-old and a four-year-old. Both boys. He and his wife got married after they discovered she was pregnant with their oldest. She was a stay-at-home mom at the time, while he worked full time. Their parents helped out with their children, so she could run errands. Until he was caught using pills. His wife kicked him out of the house and he slept in his car. After that, he lost control. He chose drugs over his children.
He admitted to using cocaine, heroin, meth, Xanax and OxyContin. What he was addicted to the most was meth. He told him everything about what the drug did to him. It was a miracle he was still alive after having overdosed multiple times. He damaged his heart during a heart attack. His body would not accept a new heart because of his condition.
What helped him get sober? He wanted to kill himself because he was so tired of relying on drugs. His family had him hospitalized. From there, he went into detox for a month before going to an intensive inpatient rehabilitation center for ninety days. It was his “come to Jesus” moment, even though he wasn’t religious. Something inside of him wanted to live. After rehab, he looked into becoming a sponsor because he wanted to help recovering addicts.
Even though he had been sober for six years, he finally decided to get a sponsor because he needed someone who understood what he was going through. Brad was proud of him! Was he proud of himself? Yes, he was.
“We both know that we’re going to slip up and relapse. That’s part of the disease and how our minds work. It’s about learning how to take accountability and learning from our mistakes.”
“Maybe you guys can help Chester with his addictions.”
“Yeah. I’ll see if Jeff wants to meet with him the next time I see him. I don’t think he would have a problem with it.”
“It was a workplace accident that caused his addiction?”
“Yeah. He told me he found out that painkillers are one of the easiest things to become addicted to because your body and mind get so used to taking them. So, they constantly need more and more. Until you can’t stop. He was working on his sobriety so he could start repairing the damage he caused.”
He hadn’t seen his boys in five years. They were eleven and nine years old now. He didn’t want that to happen to him when he had children. Neither did Brad.
Mike and Jason talked privately. They both apologized for their argument. Mike also apologized for being overprotective of his little brother. He also felt like it was his responsibility to protect him, but he needed to let him make his own decisions and mistakes. Yes, Jason admitted that he did sometimes feel suffocated. But he also acknowledged that he was just making sure he was safe. He asked that he not interfere with his private life.
If he needed help, he would come to him. Mike promised to take a big step back. Thank you. He would always go to him first because he was his older brother and he looked up to him.
“I understand what you’re saying. Thank you for telling me. I do baby you sometimes and I need to stop doing that. I’m sorry.”
“Thank you. I appreciate that.”
They hugged before going to find Bria and Joe. They just came back in after going to the front desk. Did they get towels? Yes, they did! Were they done arguing? Yes, they were. Joe joked about how happy he was because he didn’t want to be on a plane for who knows how long with them not getting along. He and Bria might have to separate them.
No, that wouldn’t be necessary. They were leaving in three days. A week had gone by so fast! They would have to get their pictures developed when they got home. She suggested going to Colorado or something for skiing and snowboarding with the band. That sounded like a fun idea. It wouldn’t involve alcohol or drinking, so Rob, Brad, Chester, and Phoenix would be able to go. Speaking of, Mike was going to check in with Phoenix when they got home.
Brad got some groceries. He brought back his purchases and put them into her refrigerator. Did he use the pool? Yes, he did. It felt wonderful! It was like he was in a giant saltwater bathtub! It was the perfect temperature! The water was so relaxing, it took away his stress. He and Rob were going to sit down together after taking a break to see how each other was doing.
He loved him and always would. Phoenix was going to check on him and see how he was doing. Phoenix was the guy they needed. He was the calm in the chaos. When he or Mike were pulling their hair out, he was the one to keep everyone going. Was he attracted to him? Not really. He was a brother figure and former college roommate but nothing more. That was all he wanted him to be. Someday he would fall in love again and live happily ever after with them.
Buddy whined. His sister had taken his bed. Why didn’t he take her bed? Because that bed was his! It had his scent on it, so he claimed it as his! Missy didn’t see a problem. She wasn’t moving and her brother couldn’t make her! Woody was watching everything from his perch above the doorway. He was not getting involved in whatever the dogs were doing.
Buddy had to give up. She was not going to give up the bed. He grumbled before sulking and walking away. Missy smiled at him like she was bragging. He grumbled and turned his back to her. His stomach was growling, so he hoped dinner would be served soon. He saw humans walking past their room, so he got up and went to the door. Bark! Bark! Human, I’m hungry! He pawed at the door. Woody couldn’t wait to be back home because he wanted his own space away from the dogs.
Bria rested her head on Joe’s shoulder. Was she tired? No, she had enough energy to last forever! They laughed. His shoulder was just very comfortable. They went down to the water park and swam around for the afternoon. It made them feel like children. They then came back upstairs and took turns using the bathroom to wash off the chlorine and change into dinner clothes.
She put on a nice white t-shirt, flowing brown bohemian skirt, flats, and a khaki jacket to keep her warm. Her long hair was pulled into a simple braid. She braided it while it was still wet, so it would be wavy when she took it out. They ordered their dinner and were waiting for it to be served. Jason got out his camera and took a picture. He would give her the picture when he got it developed. That would be awesome! They laughed.

The 2023 Report Card: Middle East
Photo: Two students in the Phoenix Learning Center math class, Domiz Camp, Kurdistan Region of Iraq.
It's time for our 2023 Middle East report card!
:: DRUM - ROLL ::
372,473 people were helped, with an additional 132,613 reached in the earthquake response. Over half a million people in the Middle East were loved in tangible ways in 2023!!
1.
Community dialogue
sessions can change the future for generations.*Nara is from Nineveh and although she wanted to be an architectural engineer, the customs in her village led her to an arranged marriage at 16 years old. After attending a Sustainable Peace Foundation community dialogue session, she started encouraging her friends to complete their high school education and that further study can help strengthen their community.
*Name changed for privacy and security.
2.
The last seven
years of Sozan’s eleven years of life, she has lived in a tent. She had felt alone, but now, she attends activities run by our partner, Inhalation of Hope.
“Our teachers were always guiding us through how to be better and be successful in school, how not to let people use us, and how we can keep ourselves safe from harassment. I also participated in math and Arabic classes. During these months of activities, I learned how to plan for my future studies and how to prepare for my education. The sessions with my teachers helped me to think positively and get rid of negative thoughts about my days…now I can deal [interact] with my friends and enjoy my time in a safe space.”
~ Sozan, Iraq
3.
Life skills
training is an upwardly mobilizing piece of the EmpowerME program, and when your world has been thrown upside-down, sometimes it can mean all the world to have help to turn it rightside-up. When Rwaida’s husband was forced to join the military, and their once-quiet neighborhood started being patrolled by tanks, they fled to Domiz Camp, in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. She attended Life Skills Training through EmpowerME and learned about money management. She purchased her own sewing machine and is now designing, mending, and sewing clothes for neighbors. She hopes to hire women in her community, to give them a way to support their families.
4.
Women tell
us how they feel about the Feminine Health Training and Feminine Hygiene kits distributed through Empower ME:
“I love the kits! They are comfortable and feel healthy to use.” “I like that the pads are washable and can be used many times to save money.” “I learned a lot about good hygiene and how to keep my body clean to protect against infections.” “I really liked the section on self-defense. So good.” “[I] learned how to be brave.” “Made me realize how important females are in society.” “Please, keep giving such training – it is so useful.”
5.
Snapshots
because there’s more good news.
Displaced families living in shelters in Al-Hasakah were without food; which is why this community sprang into action and funded food kits containing sugar, rice, burgle, olive oil, tea, spaghetti, chicken broth, and lunch meat.
The Sustainable Peace Foundation utilizes many methods to bring about healing from trauma; here, youth from Mosul are learning to create art.
So much happens at the Phoenix Learning Center in the Kurdistan region of Iraq; one of them is an English class for this local girl.
Motivated knitters, and our friends at Purl Soho, created an income for families in Dawidya Camp, and warmth for children in northern Iraq and Syria.
As displacement increases in Northeast Syria, the need for rehabilitated schools increase. Getting kids back into school is a priority for parents, and to all of us.
Al-Hol Camp is a scary place - especially if you are a child. That’s why we love the child friendly play space, where kids can come, create, make friends, and be, you know, kids.
Your love made this possible.
When you gave, we went!
Yay, you, and this incredible report card!!
One, two, three cheers,
Your friends at Partners.
