in Savannah part 1
Not too long ago I took the train down to Savannah for a long weekend. The train ride was a bit of a let down which was sad because I usually love riding the train. But nine hours in an aisle seat in a hot, crowded and noisy carraige was not a fun trip. No, not at all. Train ride aside though it was a pretty awesome long weekend. My favorite thing by far was discovering a semi-secret alternate universe of old treasures on floor after floor at Alex Raskin Antiques. It was like tumbling into another world and I could’ve spent every minute of my time there and been completely happy.
I’d admired this house before while in Savannah but had no idea of the magic inside...
If you’re ever in Savannah and you enjoy traipsing around an amazing old crumbly house that is full to the brim with treasures and mystery then head to Monterey Square, look for the antique shop tucked away on the side of one of the prettiest houses around and head on in. You’ll need to find the stairs with the door at the top. It looks like it’s off limits but it’s not...that’s where all of the good stuff is! I can’t wait to go back again one day.

tourist in my own town no. 2
Sometimes you have to make do and playing tourist in your own town can help ease the pain of not having an exciting trip in the near future. As I mentioned in a previous post Richmond has some really great buildings. I am a happy camper when I am able to wander around downtown for an afternoon taking photos. And I am even happier when i come across a mural or two (which is pretty much a given these days as Richmond has become a street art/mural mecca...kind of awesome!).
And as always my little northside neighborhood has something interesting for me to see when I take the time to go for a walk around the block...in this case it’s The Little House Green Grocery.
(All of the photos above were taken in December 2014 in RVA.)

I remember
Looking back I know that it wasn't all peaches & cream. My father wasn't around much. I don't know where he was but I don't remember much of him from when I was little. I do remember being chased by a goose once. And being chased by a swan. And climbing up on the kitchen counter in the middle of the night to get cereal or cookies or some kind of midnight snack. I remember walking through a park with my mother and two of my brothers for ice cream.
I remember that my father had a friend that used to sing a song about a purple cow and I remember being envious that my cousins got baptized in a church and got to have godparents so my father and another friend of his poured some beer on my head and claimed that friend as my godfather. Baptized by beer.
I remember listening to records in the living room...the Beatles mostly is what I liked, the Sgt Peppers album but I remember hearing Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones and going to the bluegrass festival and seeing Bill Monroe play.
I remember my father leaving at some point and living in an apartment downtown. All of the time lines are screwy in my head but around that time he took us away from our mother and we went to live with him and another woman and her kids. That was the beginning of the end of my happy childhood.

that weekend in november...
A little while back I spent a long weekend at the beach. Thanksgiving on the Outer Banks. Lazy days spent strolling the beach and daydreaming to my hearts content. Even lazier nights spent reading and falling asleep early. Getting away from it all is one of my favorite pastimes ever.

a sunday in February
Last month it snowed. In fact it was a snow storm. Over a foot of snow fell during the day and all through the night and then all into the next day. Winds blew and the house shivered and yet today, just a few weeks later, it is all melted away and it feels like spring. I’ve think it’s the snow falling that I love so much - the gray skies, the swirly flakes, the magic in the air and the coziness indoors. I don’t love so much the next day when my car is buried, I have to shovel my way out of my cozy home and the sun is glaring and making my oh so lovely snow appear harsh and cold. If only there could be snowfall every day and never would it pile up...what a dream.
I’m becoming a little bit fascinated with tarot cards and oracle cards and the like. When I was a little girl I had an aunt that had a deck of cards and I truly thought that they could tell the future. Recently in New Orleans I had my cards read by a free spirited girl on Frenchman Street named Caroline. She didn’t tell me my future but she had some lovely and lively insights. She also carried a bottle of Jack Daniels in her purse, told mesmorizing stories of learning to read the cards at her mothers knee in Jackson Square surrounded by lost souls and described an altar she keeps on her mantel for a dead lover. But I digress...I bought a deck of The Wild Unknown cards a while back simply because the art work was so lovely. Then a little spark got going that had been glowing for years, probably since I was a little girl looking at that deck of Rider-Waite cards in my aunts room. I recently picked up a set of Enchanted Map Oracle cards and a beautiful Black Lily deck on etsy from Aya Rosen and I’m ready to see what the cards hold. Not so much to tell the future (because that would be wishful thinking...or dangerous business!) but for reflection and introspection I suppose. Where will this lead...I’m curious to see
In addition to some more serious college courses that I’ve been taking lately I picked up a Floral Design class this semester. So much fun! A class that requires that you arrange flowers and then you get to take the arrangement home? What’s not to love? I may just become a florist and add that to my list of adventures in life...
