Hello it’s me again, the person who keeps thinking I’ve bookmarked AO3 fanfic stories, only to not be able to find them months later.

This is Phlint AU. I forget Clint’s relationship to Fury but I think like Fury’s like a mob leader or something & Clint owes him money so he decides that Clint can work off his debt by working at Phil’s very upscale BDSM boutique. Clint isn’t into BDSM & maybe thinks he’s gonna be paying off his debt on his back, but Phil doesn’t try anything, until of course he does, and Clint has a lot of self revelatory moments.

Natasha & Sam also work in the store. And maybe Steve & Bucky too? I can’t remember.

I coulda sworn I saved it to my Clint/Phil folder, but I went through the whole thing today and couldn’t find it. And the searches were no help (the main thing I hate about AO3 is the inconsistency in tags).

SURPRISE it's a new fic

Modern Magic AU where Clint is a sorcerer, Phil is [CLASSIFIED], and they decide to form a magical bond over a year of rituals so that they can anchor a new permanent casting circle for SHIELD.

Story is complete and chapters post every 1-2 days until they are all up. This is part 1 in a planned series but the other parts will be a while; I just got tired of holding on to the completed first part and decided to go ahead and post it.

Director’s Cut answer about Deficit in Human Will

Hmm, okay, let’s see… First, I guess, I have had the idea of Clint and food insecurity on my brain for ages. To me, it just fits with his abusive childhood, time in the system, the circus with no adults to really help him, and then then being betrayed and abandoned by his brother. I see that as something that was sort of imposed on him from outside, but conversely, internally, I also think there’s this strength and resilience that his early life forged forge in him. This is where the “secretly smart Clint” part comes from—I see him as being powerfully driven (I mean he’d have to be to become the Amazing Hawkeye as an adolescent) to overcome his circumstances, so he’s a voracious learner, even if he doesn’t have much formal education.

Because I’m largely an MCU canon-adjacent writer, I usually have common traits/characteristics that I include when I write these characters, so I try to switch up little things to make each story a little different. In this fic, I tried to switch things up with Phil a little. I mean, I think he’s still the Phil we know and love (badass, super efficient, etc.), but he’s a little green in this fic, and he makes some missteps with Clint along the way, says the wrong things, doesn’t read Clint quite right, etc. But his true nature and his heart are still evident, and because Clint is pretty smart and self-aware and “other-aware” he can see beyond the mistakes to the person that Phil really is and is drawn to him for that reason.

And I liked the idea of Phil being viscerally horrified and completely confused by Clint’s food hoarding—that this was something he didn’t know about or understand--rather than presenting him as all-knowing. Food insecurity is a real thing and I definitely was trying to be respectful of it as a trauma that many people suffer. But, I think if you’ve grown up middle class and in a secure and stable household, you might not have ever encountered it. I’m slightly horrified to say that I was entirely ignorant of it as a thing until about 15 years ago, and I’m old AF and college educated. But it just, was never on my radar because I wasn’t ever exposed to it. Actually, it’s very probable that I did know people who experienced it but because of the unfortunate shame associated with food insecurity, I wasn’t aware because they hid it well. So Phil’s confusion about what he was dealing with and his horror about the implications of Clint’s behavior, I think were something that a guy who grew up in a healthy, happy family like I hc Phil did, wouldn’t have known about.

Lastly, early on, I toyed with taking the fic a different direction, and I was going to have Lu turn out to be Hydra-SHIELD, and have her use what she’d learned about Clint from Phil to torture them both in captivity by feeding Phil but starving Clint. And Phil feels like he has to eat because he needs to stay strong to take advantage of any opening to get them free, but of course, he is completely guilt-ridden but Clint is telling him to stop being an idiot and just fucking eat (idk, they’re in separate cells that are separated by solid, clear walls or something). In the end, I liked Lu too much to do that to her. Also, it probably would have taken me another 25K of words to write that plot point and the fic was so late already I felt bad at the prospect of it taking even longer to finish.

SG - Intimate Strangers by @thornedrose44 SuperCorp no powers AU where they're both on a crashing plane and think they're about to die, so they decide to fall in love and be completely honest about their regrets and hopes in these final few minutes. Then oops, they don't actually die, so now what? I literally just rec'd this author in the last post, but "pining with a side of therapy" immediately made me think of a line from this fic that did like +10 psychic damage when I read it because of how personally attacked I was. (If you decide to read this, it's the section right after Sam asks Lena "What's not real?")

SG - We Deserve Only Good Things by @thornedrose44 Lena and Kara save an alien from a species renowned as diplomats and negotiators, so as a thank you the alien is going to fix their friendship, basically giving them couples therapy. And they do this by having the kid versions of Kara and Lena appear to the other randomly so they can process their shit and see where the other is coming from. You know the line from Buffy where Cordelia yells "OMG what is your childhood trauma?"... this is the answer in fic form.

SG - let all your damage damage me by @searidings Kara has wicked PTSD from being in the Phantom Zone, and disappears for a few weeks, saying she needs space, eventually letting Lena know she's at the Kent farm in Smallville and asking her to come. There's trauma, there's hurt/comfort, there's pining which leads to using sex as a way to avoid dealing with your issues, which is obviously super healthy and not at all a problem...

MCU - The "Use Your Words" 'Verse series by SmutLover (tumblr?) Lighter on the pining, heavier on the therapy, very funny but can get pretty serious. It starts off with Tony Stark basically looking at the end of CA:TWS and going 'holy fuck we need professional help' and hiring Sam Wilson to move into the Tower to be the Avenger's shrink. Lots of domestic Avengers Tower stuff, goes pretty hard into how badly the Russians fucked up both Bucky and Natasha, radically reworks Age of Ultron, some really interesting examinations on the ethics and personhood of AI. The pining is between Coulson and Clint, who had a relationship pre-Avengers that Nick Fury fucked with post-Avengers, and also between Steve and Tony, with Steve/Tony/Pepper being the eventual goal. This one is a LOT, like a smidge over 600k words across 6 stories.

Phil knew he could count on Clint to have his back and obey orders. The incident with Black Widow not withstanding. But his agent becomes skittish and hard to pin down. After a mission, Strike Team Delta goes through their debrief. Afterwards, Phil notices the blood. It was just a smear on the back of his hand, at first he doesn't think anything of it. Until Barton disappears and like when they first hunted Hawkeye he was gone. It was like he never existed to begin with. New friends must connect with his old friends to find him. Even if he doesn't want to be found.
