Friday, January 10: Motörhead, "Heart of Stone"
R.I.P. Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister (1945-2015), "Fast" Eddie Clarke (1950-2018), Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor (1954-2015)
Iron Fist was Motörhead’s first misfire, at least according to common perception: between the slightly half-hearted songwriting and Fast Eddie Clarke’s somewhat anemic production, the prevailing wisdom at the time was that after a couple magnificent years that culminated in a #1 live album the band had basically run out of gas and was already rehashing past glories.  The years have been a bit kinder to the record, but on the whole it still tracks as a comedown from the monumental Ace of Spades and No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith- Fast Eddie’s production wasn’t quite as bad as originally claimed, but it was a bit flat, and for the most part the songs weren’t totally there.  But still, “Heart of Stone” was still a tight and fun banger even if it immediately felt a little too familiar for comfort.  Philthy Phil was still a monster on the drumkit, Fast Eddie’s riffing layered grimy swagger over punky blues, and Lemmy belonged to a class of one.  And even if the guys were getting tired of each other, their chemistry as a band was innate and shined through.  With a better producer, “Heart of Stone” would’ve raged mightily and decimated the whole venue, as opposed to simply trashing the dressing room and taking a dump on the lawn.
