Common Name
Black Cherry Philodendron
Scientific Name
Philodendron Black Cherry (Philodendron melanochrysum x Philodendron 'Pink Princess')
Benefits
- Enhances indoor air quality by filtering and purifying the air. - Adds a touch of elegance and beauty to any room or space. - Easy to care for and relatively low maintenance. - Can be propagated easily, allowing you to share the plant with friends and family. - Has a calming and stress-reducing effect, making it a perfect addition to any relaxation or meditation area.
Appearance and Characteristics
The Black Cherry plant features large, heart-shaped leaves that start off a deep red color and gradually darken to almost black as they mature. The leaves are glossy and have a velvety texture, adding to their overall appeal. The plant can grow up to 2-3 feet in height, making it an excellent choice for tabletops or as a hanging plant.
Unique Features
One of the unique features of the Philodendron Black Cherry is its ability to change leaf color based on the amount of light it receives. When exposed to higher indirect light, the foliage develops a deeper black hue, while lower light conditions result in a more reddish tone. This natural color variation adds visual interest to the plant and makes it a conversation starter.
Caring And Growing Guide
To ensure your Black Cherry thrives, it's essential to replicate its natural habitat as closely as possible. Here are the ideal growing conditions: Philodendron Black Cherry Caring Guide Aspect Care Tips Light Bright, indirect light; Avoid direct sunlight. Temperature 65-80°F (18-27°C); Protect from cold drafts. Humidity Medium to high humidity; Mist leaves if needed. Watering Allow the top inch of soil to dry before watering. Soil Well-draining potting mix with organic matter. Fertilization Feed every 2-4 weeks during the growing season. Pruning Trim dead or yellowing leaves; Shape as needed. Propagation Can be propagated through stem cuttings in water. Repotting Repot every 1-2 years or when root-bound. Toxicity Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Pest Control Check regularly for pests like spider mites. Light Philodendron Black Cherry thrives in medium to bright indirect light. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves. Low light conditions may cause the plant to lose its dark coloration, so it's best to provide it with adequate light. Proper Watering Techniques Proper watering is crucial for the health of your Philodendron Black Cherry. Follow these guidelines to avoid overwatering or underwatering: 1. Soil Moisture Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure proper drainage to prevent waterlogged roots. 2. Water Quality Use room temperature, filtered water to prevent chlorine and other harmful chemicals from affecting the plant's roots. Temperature and Humidity Temperature: Maintain a temperature range between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Protect the plant from drafts and sudden temperature changes. Humidity: This tropical plant thrives in high humidity. Aim for humidity levels of around 60% or higher. Regular misting or placing the pot on a tray filled with water and pebbles can help maintain adequate humidity. Soil Use well-draining potting soil with good moisture retention. A mix of peat moss, perlite, and orchid bark works well for Philodendron Black Cherry. Fertilizer Frequency: During the growing season (spring and summer), fertilize every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer. Dilution: Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging for proper dilution. Over-fertilization can lead to nutrient imbalances. Pruning and Maintenance Regular maintenance ensures your Black Cherry remains healthy and visually appealing: 1. Pruning Trim dead or yellowing leaves to encourage new growth and maintain the plant's appearance. Use sterilized pruning tools to prevent the spread of diseases. 2. Support As your plant grows, provide proper support to prevent its vining stems from drooping. Use stakes or trellises to guide its growth. Potting: Select a well-draining pot that's slightly larger than the current root ball. Repotting every 1-2 years during the growing season is recommended. Propagation Propagating Black Cherry can be done through stem cuttings. Here's a simple guide: - Select a healthy stem with at least two nodes. - Cut below a node using a clean, sharp knife or scissors. - Place the cutting in water or a well-draining potting mix. - Once roots develop, transplant the cutting into a new pot.
Common Challenges and Solutions
1. Yellow Leaves Yellowing leaves can indicate overwatering or poor drainage. Adjust your watering routine and ensure proper drainage. 2. Pests Keep an eye out for pests like spider mites and mealybugs. Remove them manually or use neem oil to control infestations.

posted this as a comprehension test and so far its going um...well
(for reference:
pink princess are the trendiest plant of the 2020s. last year a 2 leaf cutting would sell for 150. this year they are more common and everyone seems to be getting them at wal mart with low varriegation. nobody aside from long-term sellers or collectors has a mature one. I had never heard of "black cherry pink princess" before and so immediately googled it to find out the difference. the difference appears to be simply that a "black cherry" is a matured pink princess philodendron and you can get any PPP to have that shade with high light exposure. people in Facebook groups do not like to search anything)
plant groups on fb are something else. nothing but people with spending addictions going "oops lol!!! I promised myself I wouldn't buy more plants but I just dropped $200 at lowes!!! 🤣🤣 my boyfriend is NOT happy! lol!!!" like it really isn't cute quirky or kitschy in the first place, let alone when every member of the group is doing it.
