American Movie  “Ready Player One” 2018

Nice sci-fi and nostalgic movie.

No matter this movie is about the revenge of the nerds,

the franchising of the universe or the collapse of civilization.

Coping with the upcoming virtual world is definitely the reality we have to face.

Deal with it and maybe we can still find the Easter Egg in real life game.

Review : Ready Player One (2018)

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is extremely high on my list of all-time favorite films.  Wreck-It Ralph is a new favorite.  Both of these movies have this classification due to the amount of varied stimulus they provided in terms of content from a large well of creators.  Neither of these movies, however, came close to breaking my brain from the sheer abundance of references thrown at me.  I survived Ready Player One with my brain unbroken, but just barely.

The film (based on the Ernest Cline novel of the same name) tells the story of Wade Wilson (Tye Sheridan), and young man living in 2048 Columbus, Ohio.  The world is falling apart, but most people don’t care because of the escapism provided by the OASIS, an interactive VR simulation that allows users to earn money and respect in a digital world.  When OASIS creator James Halliday (Mark Rylance) passes away, his master plan is unveiled : a sprawling easter egg hunt for 3 keys hidden in the OASIS that will bring a majority owner’s share and control of the OASIS to whomever finds them first.  This opens up a world of challenges to Wade Wilson, his friends, the rest of the OASIS population, and a corporation known as Innovative Online Industries (IOI), led by megalomaniac Nolan Sorento (Ben Mendelsohn).

This is one of the funnest movie experiences I have had since Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, simply because the film was fashioned for people my age and familiar with the culture of that time.  It would take hours and hours to dissect every bit of reference that occurs in this film.  During an early section of the film, I realized the degree that the references were intermingling when a race took place featuring the DeLorean from the Back to the Future franchise, a Bigfoot truck, Kaneda’s motorcycle from Akira, King Kong, the t-rex from Jurassic Park and more, and a section of the race occurred in the car chase layout from The French Connection.  The way that Steven Spielberg handled his Stanley Kubrick dedication is one of the most amazing film sequences I’ve seen in my entire life.

You do not have to be familiar with Ernest Cline’s book to enjoy this film, as he helped co-write a screenplay adaptation that fits very well in the film format.  While there are aspects of the book that I would have liked to see in this movie, what we got makes total sense in terms of the medium.  A few specific references should have stayed in, in my opinion, but large sequences of the book were not included in the adaptation, to a positive effect.  This did not need to be a nearly 3 hour epic, and Spielberg seems to have understood that when approaching this gargantuan project.

Tye Sheridan was sufficient as our lead, though the majority of our protagonists spent more than half their time voicing avatars (a realm in which they all succeeded).  Olivia Cooke brought a pitch perfect energy to her portrayal of Artemis, displaying the playfulness and confidence of the character in the book in a slightly scaled back role for the film.  I look forward to seeing more Lena Waithe in film, as her personality jumped right off of the screen.  TJ Miller was hilarious, as always.  Ben Mendelsohn did a great job of playing sinister without going over the top, and even bringing a touch of humor to his role.  Mark Rylance was so awkwardly endearing in his role as James Halliday, and Simon Pegg brought a wonderful sense of humanity and caring to the film.  Honestly, there were no weak links to speak of.

I will be seeing this film again and again more than likely.  I will own this film the first chance that I get, and many a pause session will be had in an effort to take in all the madness.  I highly recommend this movie.  It’s not the best Spielberg flick out there, but it will end up being a highlight of 2018.
