Was able to watch episode 1 of Pulang Araw on Netflix and it's heavy which is absolutely appropriate for a drama set during the Japanese occupation of the Philippines.
There's a lot of violence and gore from the start and a lot of awful things just happening to our main characters, the siblings Eduardo and Adelina in their backstories before the war but it doesn't feel forced or too heavy-handed and feels pretty time appropriate to have happened during depression-era American colonial Philippines.
I loved a lot of the direction that the story has been going to so far as well as the tragedy it's building up and especially between the siblings but if you do want to watch it, it's very heavy in violence, gore, and heavy topics like poverty and illness. There are so many characters that die in the first scene alone and there's a heavy emotional death scene at the end of the first episode.
Though if you want a historical war series, go check out Pulang Araw! It's really good and it's meeting my expectations so far!

Anyone who denies the Holocaust is a nasty bigot who erases and invalidates the suffering countless marginalized groups, but the Holocaust (very much real!!) is talked about in a propagandic manner, in that the US and its allies set the narrative in such a way that portrays them as the unambiguous heroes and objectively good.
If the Holocaust was taught honestly, it would be mentioned that the US and Canada turned away refugees including Anne Frank's family. The Allies were also all fine with marginalized people getting killed; eugenics was very popular at the time with all of them. They got involved when the Axis started encroaching on them, and not to save vulnerable populations. "Saving the Jews" was just a side effect, and unfortunately something they use to justify the ongoing Nakba, slaughtering countless Palestinians over the past century.
If the US actually respected the story of the Holocaust like it very pleadingly claims it does, it would have mentioned all this, alongside all the other genocides it and its now-allies have been involved with. (It structurally cannot do this, for it would invalidate its own existence if done in full.)
Along with being Jewish, I am also Filipino so I have another genocide under my belt that the US has involvement in. The Philippine genocide (TW for old BW photos of death, destruction, descriptions of war crimes) is rarely taught, probably because the US can't (falsely) claim to be the hero, and also because it's geographically removed.
"Kill everyone over the age of ten [and make the island] a howling wilderness" is a quote from a notoriously bloodthirsty US army officer involved with the genocide and who may have killed up to 5,000 people.
This is partially a late night stream-of-conscious post on genocide and how the US and its allies frame it, partially some longer-stewing thoughts I had been wanting to write on for a while.
#philippines#colonialism#genocide#imperialism#Tangent: A lot of Science Fiction-Fantasy i've been reading involves a lot of Asian intergenerational trauma at the hands of colonialism#I did not seek these out specifically it just happened#Also as an Asian they hit me hard#Still heartbroken over Babel in particular

Bringing back the "Preciously Inverted" livery vibe. I agree to that one person who told me that this livery looks even more "Premium". It really fits for this model tho.

He has seen more impressive stone arches in the peninsula, but the rivers there, even the Manzanares, were reduced in the summer to mere trickles, too weak to leave their banks or to dig a new bed. While the Pasig swelled without the tide, floated high and wide with the slightest rain and regularly overran its banks. He ran his fingers over the bridge railing which marked a part of his life and realized that all the past he knew was linked with España.

Batangas: My Sky and Earth—An Intimate Recollection and Reflection of My Childhood in the Philippines
To celebrate the first anniversary of Batangas: My Sky and Earth, the author is thrilled to present a special Second Edition! The eBook and hardcover editions feature high-resolution photographs in both monochrome and color, while the paperback offers enhanced black-and-white images from the original release. This unique Second Edition is a heartfelt gesture of gratitude from the author to thank readers and commemorate this significant milestone.
About the Book
When Bong Serrano learned that his older brother, Boying, had cancer, the notes he had jotted down about his childhood took on new meaning. Memories of his time with his family in the Philippines came rushing back. At the center of those memories were the precious moments he'd spent with his Kuya. Faced with his brother's impending death, Bong asked himself: "What if one day I lose my memories? Who will remember us?" Thus began Bong's yearslong journey of immortalizing not only his childhood but also his country's history and traditions. Bong grew up in the southern province of Batangas, on Luzon Island. Batangas: My Sky and Earth is a celebration of that childhood. This memoir takes you into a world made rich by the intricate descriptions of life in the Philippines in the 1970s and '80s, where the family unit is close, and many households are multigenerational. From family dynamics to church duties to delicious food and the inevitable annual typhoons, Bong invites you to experience his culture from the inside. Throughout this memoir, Bong honors his childhood home and country and the memory of his beloved brother. The choice to interweave Tagalog throughout this book's pages helps to steep the story in Filipino culture further. A whole village raised this boy, and as Bong looks back on his childhood, the lessons he learned come to the foreground: clarity, forgiveness, tradition, and love.
About the Author
Bong Serrano is a proud Batangueño, hailing from the picturesque and historic province of Batangas, Philippines. His debut memoir, Batangas: My Sky and Earth, not only pays homage to his roots but also takes readers on a nostalgic journey into the heart of Filipino heritage.
Bong completed his undergraduate studies with an academic scholarship at Ateneo de Manila University and was subsequently awarded a student exchange scholarship at International Christian University in Tokyo. After dedicating several years as an international flight attendant and Japanese speaker for American Airlines, immersing himself in diverse cultures around the world, he transitioned to roles as Digital Marketing Director at both a digital marketing agency and a not-for-profit organization for men’s health in Vancouver, contributing his expertise to both organizations over a twenty-seven-year career in digital marketing.
Though Bong has called Canada home for many years, his heart remains deeply connected to Batangas, where he frequently returns to visit family and friends. He cherishes the bonds he holds dear and finds joy in sharing stories, listening to music, taking long walks along the seawall, mastering the art of cooking adobo, indulging in Asian dramas during his leisure hours, and, naturally, pursuing his passion for writing and storytelling. Bong resides in Vancouver with his life partner of over thirty years.
Bong is currently immersed in his next project, which involves writing a historical fiction. Connect with him and explore more of his work on his website at bongserrano.com.

I just saw the teaser for Pulang Araw and honestly I hope it's good.
We need more historical series and especially ones that aren't just centered during either precolonial Philippines or the Spanish colonial period.
More stories focused on the American colonial period these past ten years had been cool to see like Heneral Luna, Goyong, and Ang Larawan among other titles, but we don't really have much movies or shows that focus on the Japanese colonial period.
Hope it's a good show and a good hit too like Maria Clara at Ibarra was.

hello there! this is jean, the author of the interactive fiction, pearl of the orient.
first of all, i would like to apologize for disappearing and deleting everything.
you must be wondering, why the new name? where's the original blog where the story is posted? what happened?
well, to be honest, i don't know exactly how to explain this without sounding like i'm making excuses but the main reason i deleted everything is because i don't know whether to continue writing it.
re-reading everything i wrote just made me so critical of everything. i didn't like how this scene went. that scene should be like this. this and that and this and that until i didn't even want to see it anymore.
if you were there a few weeks ago, i mentioned how i've finally returned to writing the story after practically months of no progress. i was in a good place then and writing seemed to flow.
until it didn't.
it could be better. it should be better.
and then, it just spiraled out of control. as it always does.
and so i made the decision to scrap everything.
so where do we go from here?
i honestly don't know. but pearl of the orient has a special place in my heart. it's a story i really want to write.
and i really do want to write it.
the only problem is i don't know how to. but i will write it.
maybe not now, but in the future.
for now, i'll be focusing on other stories.
and maybe in the future, we'll all see a version of pearl of the orient that i would be proud to show the world.
thank you for all your support for pearl of the orient and once again, i apologize for everything.

——————————————
The rays of the midday sun seep into a familiar room’s willowy curtains, gently hitting the chiming phone atop the desk near the windows.

—multiple message notifications pop up on the lock screen under the name “sakiii”.
A hand quickly grabs the device and deft fingers immediately swipe at the notification block, typing up a reply as the phone unlocks.
While the phone continues to chime and replies and chats are exchanged, a mop of pink hair flutters as the owner of the mobile opens the room’s door, a happy skip in his step as he exits the dorm and walks out of the campus dormitories.
Yuuji had made plans with Kugisaki, Fushiguro, and Gojo-sensei last week—more like he was suddenly ordered to clear up his schedule without any preamble, but Yuuji didn’t care and just happily obliged because he originally didn’t have anything planned anyway. He wasn’t told why he needed to do so, though, so he was left to wander over to their meeting place without any context.
With a hum, Yuuji exits the chat interface and opens his phone’s map, finally reaching the exit of the campus.
As the warm outside air brushes over tan skin, his phone’s map then loads up directions to the place Yuuji inputted on the search bar. A series of left and right turns that looks akin to a maze pop into his view, and Yuuji prays that he won’t get lost following the guide.
When he takes a turn for the third time on the fourth intersection he’s passed, Yuuji is met with… a minor inconvenience: an old lady sprawled on the floor with fruits and vegetables littered around her.
With the time on his phone turning 1:05 PM, slowly nearing the supposed meeting time, Yuuji tilts his head in contemplation and takes a step.
——————————————
What should Yuuji do next? 1. Walk up to the old lady. OR 2. Turn around and look for another route.
POLL RESULTS: [Option 1] - 100% [Option 2] - 0%
