'The Music Party': Frederick, Prince of Wales with his Three Eldest Sisters
Artist: Philippe Mercier (French, 1689-1760)
Date: 1733
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Royal Collection Trust, United Kingdom
Description
Philippe Mercier served as Painter and Librarian to Frederick, Prince of Wales, from 1728 until 1738. There are three versions of this celebrated image; the other two (National Trust and National Portrait Gallery) are set out of doors with the so-called ‘Dutch House’ at Kew in the background. Since the events depicted here make more sense indoors it is usually assumed that this is the first treatment of the theme, however the date of 1733 inscribed on the National Portrait Gallery version provides an acceptable dating for all three.
The Prince of Wales is shown playing the cello, accompanied by his sister Princess Anne (1709-59) at the harpsichord; Princess Caroline (1713-57) plays the mandora (a type of lute) and Amelia (1711-86) reads a volume of Milton’s poems. The setting seems to be specific - the red brick back of a building in the background is certainly not an artist’s impression of an ideal palace - but it is impossible to identify with certainty. The sconce to the right (one of a group supplied in 1733 by Benjamin Goodison, c.1700-67) and the painting of the sleeping Endymion on the wall (by Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini) are both accurately recorded and still in the Royal Collection.

The Sense of Touch
Artist: Philippe Mercier (French, 1689 or 1691–1760)
Date: 1744-1747
Medium: Oil on canvas
Collection: Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, CT, United States
Description
The composition is divided in half and (as in The Sense of Taste) turns on two pairs of lovers. On the left, having allowed the little girl to stroke her, the cat (center) has apparently without warning lashed out and scratched the young man, drawing blood. He soothes his finger, while the young lady at his side gestures in surprise. The amorous couple on the right experience no such painful interruption, though the young lady is aware that the viewer is watching them kiss, and aware that we are aware that she is aware. Two Chinese vases stand at either end of the mantelpiece, while the horizontally oriented oval painting in between, and the vertical one on the left, are classicizing landscapes.

Criminal Case Inkember 2024
Part 4 : Day 25 to 30
After Inktober 2024, let's get to Criminal Case Inkember, held by @inkembercriminalcase on Instagram ! This time, we have the choice between 2 characters for each Prompt, which I find amazing because this could develop your creativity even more ! You can even do it with both characters, or even others !
Here is the Prompt List :
Tumblr media
RULES ! (I gave it to myself to add more "punch" and "difficulty", just like I did with Inktober, but less rules because it is already centralized into one Fandom) :
No duplicates of characters ! If a character is drawn in a Prompt, I cannot draw this character ever again, even if it's somewhat fitting for the theme (considering the amount of characters in these games, it should not be difficult).
"15" Classic Drawings, just like Inktober.
15 Minimalist Drawings, just like Inktober as well.
Switching between Classic and Minimalist : For example, if Day 1 is Minimalist, Day 2 will be Classic, and so on.
Note : Two Days of this Inkember will unfortunately be scrapped because of the Eternals Posters Series. Therefore Day 6 and 20 will be scrapped...Unfortunately...(Whic also means that 2 Classic Drawings will be scrapped, and the order was adapted to Eternals to somehow fit with it).

Holy Spirit, soul of my soul, I adore Thee. Enlighten me, guide me, strengthen and comfort me. Tell me what I ought to do and order me to do it. I promise to submit to anything that you requirest from me, and to accept everything that Thou allowest to happen to me. Just show me what Thy will is.
A Prayer by Cardinal Mercier, quoted in In the School of the Holy Spirit by Jacques Philippe.

School for Girls
Artists: Philippe Mercier (French, 1689–1760)
Object Type: Satirical
Genre: Conversation Portrait
Date: 1738
Media: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Private Collection
Philippe Mercier (also known as Philip Mercier) was a French painter and etcher, who lived principally and was active in England. He was born in Berlin of French extraction, the son of a Huguenot tapestry-worker. He studied painting at the Akademie der Wissenschaften of Berlin and later under Antoine Pesne, who had arrived in Berlin in 1710. Later, he travelled in Italy and France before arriving in London - ‘recommended by the Court at Hannover’ - probably in 1716. He married in London in 1719 and lived in Leicester Fields.
