TOM GLYNN-CARNEY PHOTOGRAPHED BY MATTHEW LEIFHEIT FOR VULTURE MAGAZINE.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
TALKING ABOUT HIS CHARACTER ARC IN S2.
Aegon is confident, politically savvy, and even affectionate with his children from sister-wife Helaena (Phia Saban).
“Showing that he has the potential to love was interesting to me. I wanted to investigate that.”
Glynn-Carney, who read the book after a season one conversation with Condal and Sapochnik about Aegon's overall arc, praises the development for its shock factor and the attention it gives to Saban, who says it is "sensational in all its forms."
There’s something about Aegon in his eyes when he admits: “I’d probably go a little more graphic about the gore. I could have done with, ‘Oh, I can’t look at that!’ The sadist in me needed it.”
TALKING ABOUT MUSIC.
The playlist he made for Aegon (he makes one for all his characters) helps get him in the right mercurial mind-set, he tells me at Rough Trade.
It includes some contemplative classical and punk rock like the Undertones, Stiff Little Fingers, and the Sex Pistols.
“Ironically,” he says with a smile. “fuck-the-patriarchy, fuck-the-monarchy stuff.”
In his own life, Glynn-Carney makes “lyrically driven, quite folky” music, citing Tame Impala, Bon Iver, and, of course, Garvey as influences.
He grabs a copy of Jeff Buckley’s Grace because he’s worn down his current edition from listening to it so much. He treats Chet Baker’s 1959 album Chet gently, like a holy object, when he tells me he’d love to play the cool jazz musician in a biopic one day.
“There she is,” he says, as if greeting an old friend, when he sees Patti Smith’s Radio Ethiopia.
“Anyone who says they don’t like music, you can’t trust them. Bodies under the floorboards, isn’t it?” he says.
OLIVIA COOKE TALKING ABOUT TOM GLYNN-CARNEY'S ACTING STYLE.
His acting style is instinctual, a function of his theater training that feels particularly well suited to Aegon’s own impulsiveness.
When filming their first scene on the show together, Glynn-Carney encouraged Cooke to actually slap him in the face:
“The first go, I did it really haphazardly. I only caught his chin with my fingertips, because I was too nervous. And he was like, ‘No, Olivia, just, like, really go for it. Just really go for it.’
“I went for it, and the ringing sound that came from the slap reverberated all through the Red Keep. Tears are springing to his eyes and his chin is wobbling.”
SPOILERS!! S2.
OLIVIA COOKE TALKING ABOUT A SCENE OF AEGON AND ALICENT IN S2.
In a scene they share in season two during which Aegon grieves the loss of a relative:
“He was throwing himself around the room in just the throes of despair. It sort of took me out of the scene a bit. I was like, Bloody hell, Tom’s doing well.”
ABOUT THE PERSONALITY OF KING AEGON II.
“massively bipolar.”
That emotional volatility, fueled by shame, guilt, and an obsessive need to prove himself, becomes a major driver of this season’s increasing bloodshed and brutality.
“Aegon wants to be loved and feared at the same time. But I think it’s a dangerous cycle.”
“We’re not going to get to the core of what’s going on. We’re just going to go round and round and round and round and round until everything burns and everyone’s dead."
ABOUT HIS SCENES WITH RHYS IFANS IN S2.
One of his favorite days on set this season reminded him of the live energy of performing onstage.
They were shooting episode two, when Aegon challenges his grandfather Otto’s decisions and remains steely and resolute in response to Otto’s insults:
“I’ve always wanted to do a play with Rhys, and that felt like the closest thing I’ll get to it for a while.”
“It was an empty set, a big room, like a stage. We were allowed complete free rein of the space.”
TALKING ABOUT HIS FAMILY.
He came from a creatively inclined family: His paternal grandparents were an opera singer and a choirmaster, and his mother sewed all the costumes for his sister’s ballroom and Latin dance competitions.
They were supportive of his acting dreams, he says, but urged a plan B — a suggestion he rejected:
“I remember being so precocious and being like, ‘If I have a plan B, I’m preemptively failing it.’ My mom probably thought, Little dickhead.”
“I always had my eyes on the prize, and sometimes you’ve just got to be like that, haven’t you?.”

What do you think of the writers establishing the dance with primarily gendered themes instead of anti-monarchy ones? Saw people bashing Phia on twitter for saying both sides are bad and Condal for saying that monarchy is inherently corrupt. Called them misogynistic for shoving a second theme in the story when it comes to women.
Idk if they're going to sanctify Rhaenyra to avoid outrage or if they'll do her corruption. Dany fans are especially rabid over Rhaenyra.
ryan condal is the most embarrassing motherfucker around because he‘ll parrot his anti targaryen motifs in interviews but literally zero of it is translated on screen 😭
i‘ll just go ahead and say that the dance very much had a gendered aspect to it, but the show overdoes it (its actually embarrassing how they try to make the black council somehow in the wrong for making very valid points) and forgets the actual rot at the core of it -> the throne itself
sadly targaryen stans are a very vocal part of the fandom (instagram is so full of them, just liking asoiaf will have your feed FLOODED with pages called blood of valyria or dragon queen daenerys 😭) and hbo was scared of making an outright targaryen critical show i guess… so they had to make rhaenyra this valiant hero who fights for the survival of the world. OBVIOUSLY there is a right side to „support“ now, which is a shame because nothing is as simple as that in asoiaf. but it is in hotd. tragic.

#8'S LOVE STORY | goshiki tsutomu
prompt: "i can't get over how a few months ago, i wanted to learn your name, and now you're having breakfast with me in my sweater."
content: (🦷) tooth-rotting fluff, goshiki gushing over you and perhaps getting distracted during practice while thinking about you, you're his upperclassmen (second year), tendō is a wingman and brownie enthusiast, you like baking, quite long.
⚠ warning/s: none.
note: gosh this was so fun to write that it became a one-shot instead of a drabble. i've never gotten a goshiki request so this was a good challenge for me. i really hope that i got him and the rest of shiratorizawa's personalities right! TYSM AND ILY HIKARIII ENJOY READING GIRL!!! :D
Tumblr media
"her name.. what's her name?!" goshiki tsutomu mentally groaned with furrowed brows, peeking out from his classroom door to look at you, his beautiful upperclassmen. you were a responsible girl who did everything at your own pace, hence the clipboard in your hands to check your schedule for the day. if the student council of shiratorizawa accepted second years, you definitely would've at least been the secretary.
goshiki heard your name once from a few of your friends, but he.. just can't remember!
so here he is, irritatedly sipping on his juice box while staring you down. although not on purpose, of course.
"what's up, goshiki! what are we lookin' at?" tendō appears out of nowhere, accidentally spooking the poor wing spiker. goshiki turns his head to look over his shoulder, "huh?! tendō, what are you doing here?! aren't the third year's classrooms all the way on the third floor?"
"what a smart little cookie you are!" tendō ruffled goshiki's hair. "well, y'know how shiratorizawa's annual bake sale is coming up? i'm trying to find y/n because i heard that she's handling the preparations this year. i wanna see if i can get some of her famous two-bite brownies in advance before they sell out again!" tendō hisses at the bitter memory.
tendō can still recall the stinging feeling of how he wasn't able to purchase last year's batch because a volleyball game overlapped on the same day as the sale, so by the time the team got back to shiratorizawa, all of the brownies were gone.
and, hold on..
"y/n!" goshiki rejoices as he was finally able to recollect your name, all thanks to tendō. "yes?" you ask, looking at goshiki with a confused look.
goshiki turns red. "n- nothing!" i forgot that she was in the same hallway!
something in tendō sparks, and he suddenly has the urge to help his underclassmen's love life. he can bring up the brownie topic with you later..
"hey, n/n! what do you think of our up-and-coming ace here? ain't he a real firecracker?" tendō suddenly compliments goshiki, even wrapping his long arm around the young boy's shoulder. goshiki widens his eyes, already wanting to hear more. "hm? oh, i haven't seen him play yet," and just like that, goshiki's ego has been cracked and bruised.
"but i'd love to be invited to the next game if that's okay with you, goshiki." you smile a pearly one at him, and goshiki's mood is turned right back around. "yes! please come, y/n! i won't disappoint you!" he exclaims.
you giggled it off and soon excuse yourself from the two.
"what a cute boy!" you thought with a faint blush on your cheeks.
goshiki looks at tendō, utterly speechless to the core, while the middle blocker only dusts his hands off as if he's just finished some heavy labor. "what can i say! i may not be the first to get married from our team, but i can be a good matchmaker!"
goshiki has never had more respect for tendō than he has right now.
time skip.
"oi! stop standing around like that, number eight! you look like a lost kid at the mall!" coach washijo scolded goshiki, who flinched. i was spacing out again! "s- sorry, coach!"
reon comes up to tendō and shirabu, "what's up with him?" he asks. shirabu sighs, "i don't know. but if he continues to do this, then he'll just drag the whole team down."
"oh, poor little shirabu! i can tell you what's going on in goshiki's head," tendō says, "our future ace has a crush on the sweet and classy y/n!"
"that doesn't matter. can't he just leave his personal feelings out of practice? prelims are around the corner, after all." shirabu stated factually. "it's not like you're capable enough to have crushes anyway, so the least you could do is cut goshiki some slack." semi poked fun at shirabu, as the older setter just so happened to overhear the conversation from a few feet away.
"what did you say?" a visible vein forms on shirabu's forehead.
tendō turns to reon while shirabu and semi bicker, "anyway, the kid is all worried about the upcoming game because y/n is coming to see him play for the first time." tendō whispers. "you think he'll be alright?"
reon looks at goshiki, who's physically trembling. there's even a gloomy aura around him practically screaming, "don't screw this up, don't screw this up, don't screw this up."
just in good timing, ushijima places his palm on goshiki's shoulder. "rest, goshiki. you need to be in good shape to practice." he states. "yeah, exactly! aren't you gonna be ushiwaka's successor? what'll y/n think when she sees you all shaken up on the court!" tendō exclaims.
ushiwaka's.. successor.. y/n..
goshiki's aura quickly shifts into one of fiery determination, ready to take on anything and everything. "you're right, tendō! i'll do my best!"
"it's really easy to get this kid going, huh.." the team thought simultaneously, sweat dropping in the process.
time skip.
it's the day of the prelims, and shiratorizawa was up against ohgiminami high. they're not a powerhouse that goshiki was familiar of, but then again, they're not be underestimated.
the starting line-ups are on court, and there goshiki was standing, being the only first year. that was something you noticed from the stands.
"he must be really talented to have been able to get that far.. i heard that coach washijo is tough on the volleyball club too." you thought.
the coin is flipped and shiratorizawa ends up serving first. ushijima hits the ball and there we go, a service ace. you're impressed to have seen the ball fly by that fast, but then again, it's ushijima. "if i tried receiving that, my arms would fall right off.."
goshiki sees your amused face from the stands, and he huffs. "wait until you see me score a point, y/n!"
a few rounds later, and the rotation is in goshiki's favor. he's up front. he can do a line shot, a move that he specializes in.
"make it a good one, goshiki!" tendō encourages the boy as shirabu sets the ball cleanly toward goshiki. even though he has two blockers against him, he was still able to make a beautiful line shot that granted shiratorizawa another point.
"what was that?!" you were shocked, to say the least. "tendō wasn't kidding when he said he'd be the up-and-coming ace.." you quietly mutter, referring to goshiki.
you watched the way that goshiki shortly celebrated on the court with each of his teammates giving him some heavy pats on the back. the moment was adorable.
goshiki looked up to see you smiling fondly at him. you send him a wave, and he shoots back a smile full of pride; a smile that says, "look at me, y/n! aren't i amazing?"
and only if you knew what it conveyed, you would've replied with a, "yes, goshiki. very."
time skip.
you yawn, clearly drowsy from the lack of sleep. on the table in front of you, was a nice breakfast whipped up by shiratorizawa's patient cooks; one omurice, a small bowl of grapes, and a cup of milk. but besides what was on the table, was what was across from you; goshiki tsutomu, your boyfriend.
it was a cold morning in japan, for spring had finally started. so here you are, all bundled up in goshiki's volleyball jersey.
he's seen smiling at you, and you tilt your head. "what's on your mind, tomu?"
"nothing, it's just.. i can't really get over how a few months ago, i wanted to learn your name, and now you're having breakfast with me in my jersey." goshiki says, "honestly, if it weren't for tendō, i probably wouldn't even be with you right now."
you perk a brow. goshiki panics, "d- don't tell him i said that though!"
"i wouldn't give tendō all the credit, really," you started, "i actually had already taken an interest in you when you were looking at me in the first year's hallway. it was only a matter of time until i'd have mustered enough courage to talk to you myself." you admitted.
is this what a heart attack feels like, because goshiki can feel his chest swelling in both love and pride.
this was a happy ending not only for the two of you, but for tendō too, since he was able to buy all of the two-bite brownies he needed.

Ok so I have a lot of thoughts about this first episode: Beware spoilers
Things I liked
I really liked the beginning narration with Cregan, it was really nice to see Winterfell again.
The way Rhaenys put Daemon in his place, great bit of acting because you can feel the familial relationship between them. Also Rhaenys explaining her grief over Laena was really emotional.
Rhaenyra searching for Luke’s remains was great. Congrats to Emma for their acting, they managed to emote so much without any lines. Rhaenyra’s yell mixing with Syrax made me tear up a little bit.
Alicent lighting a candle for the dead mix with Luke’s funeral also was awesome. You can really feel the grief of all the characters in that scene.
Overall I think the scenes with the blacks were the best part of the episode because they really went with show don’t tell. We could feel the emotions of the characters without it being explained in a condescending manner to the audience ( something I feel season one did way to much of the time) they also didn’t rushed through these scenes so I think it contributed to my enjoyment of them.
What I didn’t like
Personally I feel like the scenes of the greens felt way to rush both in the dialogue and the pacing in which they were shot. One second Aegon is bursting in the looking for Jaeherys the next he goes to the small council, the next he is talking to Larys.
Yeah Otto is still a piece of shit. No more comments on that.
Ok WTF is up with Criston and Alicent hooking up? I have really mix feelings about this. On one hand I love that Alicent is exploring her sexuality after spending her life chained Viserys and then being SA by Larys buuuuut in terms of narrative I feel that it is extremely out of character for both Alicent and Criston. My take on Criston is that he condemns Rhaenyra for her enjoying her sexuality and “lack” of morals. That scenes in S1 where Alicent offer him redemption is him equating her with what he thinks a pious and moral woman should be. So him breaking his kingsguard vows (again) to sleep with him when his so called honor it’s his now defining trait feels like a very odd choice.
Now Alicent is defined by her obedience of her father, her husband and society’s rules. So as I mentioned before I really like the idea of her exploring her pleasure and sexuality and it makes to choose Criston because she feels safe with him. However I feel that this decision contradicts her core values installed by the seven about sex and her image as the dutiful queen and daughter. I can be onboard with this decision IF the writers managed to address this conflict within her which I honestly doubt.
About blood and cheese
Ok so my expectations of this scene where pretty great not gonna lie. Mainly because of the build up during the press tour ( it’s gonna bigger and more shocking that the red wedding!!!!!) and because we have already seen this in the animated shorts (Michelle Fairly is perfect voice narrator for this bit)
I really liked the idea blood and cheese being sent for Aemond but stumbling upon Heleana and the twins. Many people from what I seen are critiquing Phia’s acting but I actually like it, I totally think this is how Tv!Heleana would react to this situation since she has never been a loud person.
However I think we needed more episodes to get to know her and the twins, the writers seriously missed that the reason the red wedding shook us was because we loved those characters after following their journey for three seasons we were invested in their survival and their death was harrowing because of it not because of the gore.
Also I don’t think the lack of maelor makes Heleana’s choice any less horrible. So those people can shut up, she is still being forced to choose with child to save or let them all die.
I REALLY hated the fact she interrupted Alicent and Criston having sex, it felt more for shock value than anything else. For me it would been better it she came across Aegon and Aemond you know the two people directly related to the murder. One because Aegon is the father and two it’s Aemonds fault that blood and cheese where there in the first place.
Overall I didn’t love these episode but I didn’t hate it, it just felt underwhelming for the start of the season. But I’m not discarding it as of now.
Also the new intro is cool.

It's crazy certain hard core al[edited] shippers, who're also fierce helaemond antis, seem genuinely convinced the actors take active part in their ridiculous ship war, think about al[edited] 24/7, just like them and hate helaemond with burning passion. I cannot rule out Gayle and Ewan actually like this ship and will enjoy workig together, but we don't know it for sure, lol. And as for helaemond, we cannot be certain Phia and Ewan love it, but we don't know if they think it's pure abomination, either. It appears to me they are pretty chill about people having a good time in the fandom, which is actually harmless. I also find it strange some antis point out when Ewan lied when said he was looking forward to delving into the Aemond -Helaena dynamics in season 3 , post the "power shift". Wouldn't it be pretty logical to focus on siblings' relationship in a family drama? Yet again, I don't say he adores helaemond, but maybe he simply likes workig with Phia? Even though she doesn't play book! Aemond's canon "love interest"?

on this episode of phia goes outside: st augustine florida!
one of my favorite places to go to. details below the cut ✨
i nerded out in the fossil / paleo store (and could not afford a single thing)
i really wanted the lightbox with the moths, rattlesnake and bat in it, as well as the spinosaurus tooth (they’re my fav dino!)
for lunch we had poutine & french dip. it was my first time having poutine and i really enjoyed it. the french dip was bomb…
I saw many butterfly earrings which are sooo helaena core and i very much wanted to get them (my nickel allergic ass said no)
st. Augustine is regarded as the oldest city in america and it certainly feels like it. the energy there is lovely and very charged (it is also very haunted)
it was a bit warm today for my tastes but thats florida baby
we stopped in lots of shops including an international candy store! Where i got the crunchie bar 🤭 i picked up some stroopwaffel, some peach & strawberry gummies in an adorable jigglypuff & igglybuff pink tin, and some chocolate mushrooms.
overall was a very good day and i will be very sore tomorrow

Tom delivers a wonderful performance, as does the rest of the cast. While the show and the book differ, there are still core aspects that should be shared between them. Despite the strong performances, it’s surprising that many cast members haven't read the source material, especially considering they’ve been portraying these characters for years. By the second season, it seems baffling that some actors still haven't engaged with the original text.
George appreciates everyone's interpretations, but he has expressed dissatisfaction with the show’s adaptation. For instance, while he praised Phia’s performance, he still disapproved of the take on her character in the series.
Adding complexity to characters is commendable, but it doesn’t change the fact that these characters are war criminals (tb and tg). It sounds absurd to describe a war criminal as an empath. How can someone who burns, tortures, and kills people be considered empathetic?. I genuinely like the cast, but I can no longer take them seriously in interviews. Their performances are strong, yet it's frustrating to see them discuss the show without having read the source material, especially after portraying these characters for so long. It feels like a disconnect between their portrayal and a deeper understanding of the story.
Thanks for the ask!
I completely agree that the show should be as close to the source material as possible. But the show has differed so much that it's not even fair to consider them the same canon.
Tom has said he's read the book. Or, Aegon's part of the book, at least. George commended everybody for their performance, but this is what he said about Tom:
Tumblr media
To me, this is a praise of his characterisation as well. Not just performance. But you take it how you want.
I want to say that in the interview where Tom describes Aegon as an empath, he was just misusing the word, as the rest of his statement doesn't back up that claim.
But let's say he didn't.
Empaths can still be bad people. Empaths can still hurt people, even intentionally. Being an empath can make it easier, actually. They can learn to spot people's weaknesses and use it to their advantage. Tom has said in the past that Aegon can be more calculating and manipulative than he appears. I don't think it's too far-fetched of an idea that Aegon is both an empath and a horrible person.

whats your most unpopular philosophy take? And who are your favorite philosophers and poets
I don’t usually share my views or opinions on anything simply because i think it’s meaningless (yes i know this sentence is an opinion in itself), why should other people be concerned about my opinions, and why should i be concerned about theirs?
Everything has two sides, the so-called good and the so-called bad. Individuals should create their own values, rather than adhering (sticking) to pre-existing morals that have been imposed on them. Why should we agree on someone else's standard of something being good? How do i know it is “good”? What if that good makes me feel bad (and vice versa)?
I don’t label myself as an absurdist or a nihilist, labeling doesn’t make any sense (no pun intended) to me. If you ask me about the sky i would say it’s red. How are you gonna prove me wrong when there is no right? For me the grass is yellow and the sun is purple if i want them to be. Nothing really makes sense, and this doesn’t have to be a negative point of view towards life, it’s just the truth which a lot of people don’t wanna hear.
"Sometimes people don't want to hear the truth because they don't want their illusions destroyed." - F. Nietzsche
I don’t believe in a God, but I’m not an atheist. I do believe that there is some kind of spirit, because nothing happens for no reason. I had a lot of dots connecting in my life, so it would be pretty stupid to just say it’s all a coincidence. This refutes my other point that nothing makes sense, which also proves my point that nothing makes sense.
I don’t like people who are extremely positive and who keep trying to convince me that life is enjoyable. They manipulate themselves into thinking life is rainbows and flowers so they could escape the absurdity of life which eventually gets to them.
Many people find my “point of view” on life absurd, which i find very ironic, because life is absurd on its own.
Don’t get me wrong, i do enjoy life sometimes, i do enjoy helping people when they’re in need, i genuinely love being, what people call, a good person. I don’t have any intentions to hurt other people, not even when they hurt me, because there is no answer greater than silence and no punishment greater than forgiveness.
Anyway, my favorite philosophers are Nietzsche (i think you could’ve guessed this even from my first sentence lmao) and Camus. I also enjoy classic literature, especially russian (or slavic in general). As for poets, i like Edgar Allan Poe, he’s definitely my favorite.

overall thoughts on s2?
ah. well. 😔 you know. i have so much to say really and generally, you can kinda tell how i feel about a season from how much i gif it versus how much i don't and same for each episode and character lmao. sorry for how long this is gonna be, i'm gonna split it up into general thoughts and then more character based thoughts:
overall:
if i had to sum up hotd s2, i would say two things come to mind immediately. the first is that, even with the show's heavy handed writing, i couldn't as an audience member understand where this season really was culminating. for me, there was an overall lack of tension that really drove towards a finale, in some sense it's a season that cuts short of where it should be going bc of the hbo limiting them to 8 episodes.
my other perspective is that, s1 gets a lot of flack for its speed and the significant jumps we make for characters, and yet i felt that this season actually did a far worse job juggling the appropriate amount of screen-time but also remaining consistent to the character's core motivations.
the 8 episode limitation i do think affected them for some characters. there are jumps in character motivations that are essentially a flick of a switch with no lead-up, certain storylines are really left loose and not tied up or fully reach a conclusion.
but more than that, the 8 episode limitation doesn't really matter. yes, it's limited screentime but it's still 8 hours of screentime. i've seen shows with that amount, or less, that have done a more coherent job with just better writing. ik a lot of people take issue with the show not having more "action" or battles (and some of it is probably valid!) but for me the prevalent issues where with character writing, allotting screen time and pacing.
overall, season 1 > season 2. for me, personally.
my favourite episodes were 2, 6, & 4. i do think they kinda messed up b&c but on rewatch i enjoyed it fine, still think there were some weird beats in it but phia does an amazing job. i think ep 7 was very well done but i'm not sold on the direction they're going with rhaenyra yet. weakest episodes for me were 3 & 8.
characters under cut:
warning: lot of criticism below so if you don't want to read negativity just stop here bc it's mainly me ranting about the bits i didn't like. tldr; aegon - best writing of the season, aemond & alicent - weakest writing of the season. that's not intended as character hate, it's intended as criticism of how the characters are written and utilised this season.
daemon:
i would have cut the harrenhal storyline. i know people like it, but what at first is a surprise to the audience quickly loses its luster when the contents of daemon's vision are nothing more than rehashing his season 1 storyline. and in a season of 8 episodes, you don't have time to waste somehow relitigating the same thing you have since your PILOT. it's really a fault of s1's writing for kinda putting daemon aside post episode 5, but even then what's the point? i have an issue with the harrenhal plotline because it's not believable — as an audience member, i don't expect daemon to betray rhaenyra and i don't buy that he will. the contents of the vision and daemon's reaction to them make it clear it is an obstacle for him to overcome, a lesson to learn let's say, rather than true temptation. in the meantime, the action in the riverlands stagnates and daemon is essentially made to look incompetent — rather than being able to muster an army for rhaenyra after the mistake of b&c and prove himself to her via his own actions, he loses their support, is essentially schooled by a 14(?) year-old and then an army amasses just in time for him to wake out of the visions which somehow (even when they're direct parallels or mirrors to scenes which took place in REAL life) have a more significant impact on him than, say, oh idk, the very real argument he had with his wife in episode 2.
rhaenyra/alicent/rhaenys/helaena:
this constant need to circle back to this show's primary understanding of women in power being "women are actually peacemakers who avoid bloodshed at all cost, and it's men who are driven to reckless violence and war" is actually regressive af and i don't care to see it. am i here to watch a tragedy or not, because if so the show needs to allow these elements play out for it to feel like one.
rhaenyra & alicent, & even more so rhaenys, are just pigeonholed into these women desirous of peace even when it's at the cost of the people they are supposed to LOVE most in their lives, and in doing so they no longer feel like relatable characters to the audience at times. this show is 10x better when it's female characters are allowed to be ugly, to rage and to be vengeful instead of becoming a living soapbox for the writers' "stop the violence" shtick. and helaena is right there along with them, phia saban is amazing during b&c (even if they managed to fuck that up too), and episode 2 as well, only for her grief to be resolved by episode 3 and then. then, the most staggering of all, by episode 8 her story culminates in a vision where she is bran-stark 2.0, all-knowing with her powers controlled (who knows how) but also more of a plot-device than a fully fledged character, there to apparently TELL daemon what to do (just like alys ofc, cause who knows what her backstory or motivation is. certainly not us).
i liked alicent and rhaenyra's relatonship in s1. it was fine. did i think it could cause potential issues down the line, yeah i did and i wasn't fully happy with the effect of aging down alicent to be a child-bride and a victim of marital rape, but i took it in stride. but this was their backstory. and that's how it should remain. we have 8 episodes of limited screentime, and really, if they had at least stuck with the actual friends-to-enemies that i assumed was the intent, it would be fine bc guess what — there IS a reunion in the book that they could have adapated perfectly fine. but instead, we are treated to not one, but TWO, two! reunions which are nonsensical, but more than that, are honestly...insultingly bad? i re-watched s1 directly before s2, and i also rewatched the first two episodes of s2 at one point and i have to say after episode 2 of s2, the show feels markedly different. even rhaenys death doesn't really have the impact it should? the characters just. don't act like themselves at times, and idk what it is - the lack of a court environment? the lack of domesticity and characters being separated? dialogue that is driven more by s1 plot points than what just occured last episode?
alicent. well. idk what to say. the amount of screentime that is given with giving olivia nothing to do is awful. it's three times the screen-time aemond gets for example. i'll say no more bc ik people love alicent and olivia, but the writing for alicent was appallingly bad this season - truly a disservice to the character. abandoning larys & alicent's relationship was a mistake, as she no longer even attempts to cling onto power, and once otto leaves in episode 2 there's no one for her character to essentially play off of, leaving for the most lackluster of writing. oh well.
idc about those reunions at all. i was kinda taken aback by having two, which i think undercut each other tbh, but i knew at least one would happen. and i expected the tension and energy of 'driftmark' not whatever this was. and the acting couldn't save it for me, alas.
aegon/aemond/criston/gwayne:
aegeon received the best writing this season by far. i would say its a marked improvement from the writing in s1; aegon still feels like a continuation of s1!aegon (pathetic, a drunk, incompetent and crude), but given more depth and range, with a storyline that takes him from an incompetent king, all the way through his grief, to realising he is nothing more than a pawn to his family, and to the betrayal at rook's rest after which changes him significantly and sets the stage for the third season. aegon & larys' relationship too is a standout, because it's the only part of the show that bothers with political intrigue the way it's predecessor did. the rest is abandoned.
aemond is given. well. almost no writing or screentime! i'm not really a big fan of aemond in many ways (if i could be more honest, i really don't care for him at all), but really, the guy has barely any more screen-time than he does in s1, even though he's not only a) partially responsible for the outbreak of this war (cutting the f&b scene where he informs his family was insanity.), but b) literally becomes REGENT in episode 5. the brothel plotline as an aside to justify his betrayal of aegon was unnecessary tbh, it dislocated him from the main plotline. for those first 3 episodes he feels like he has no presence in a story, even after b&c has happened. he literally commits the act of burning an entire town (sharp point) off screen. we don't see it! only the aftermath!
criston, criston, criston. tbh, i was pleasantly surprised by criston at certain points of the season (i do think he had more screentime than he should have though) — he is a FAR better and more interesting character once you remove him from the confines of the red keep. putting him opposite someone like gwayne made for much better screentime than his lackluster, completely passionless romance with alicent.
speaking of which, i thought alicole would at the very least has some effect — lying to aegon's face about what happened during b&c, helaena finding out, larys figuring it out. but no. the only confrontation comes from gwayne of all people as cole sniffs a handkerchief, and which is of no consequence. so much for 'political intrigue' right.
gwayne: a welcome addition and freddie fox is brilliant. that's all.
jace/baela/rhaena/corlys/dragonseeds/mysaria....and etc:
jace after aegon is the most consistently written character imo. harry did a good job for the most part i think, you feel that jace has gone from a teenager to someone on the cusp of adulthood, a dutiful heir, stricken by insecurity and affected by his brother's loss but also who deeply desires to fight for his mother and his own claim after hers. i wish we spent a bit more time with him in the north or the vale, but at least we know he went and achieved something, plus the idea of the dragonseeds comes from him — he definitely stepped into his own this season.
baela & rhaena: should have both received more screentime. baela's scene with corlys was good, i wish more of the scenes centred around baela's feelings as opposed to jace but i did like it even if it felt a bit overacted at times. as for rhaena? phoebe is such a good actor (honestly a standout in the minor screentime she gets), but gets so little writing even now. i can only hope we actually see rhaena claim sheepstealer and that it isn't another scene relegated to offscreen.
corlys: steve is one of the best actors in the show and he is underutilised this season imo. he is confined to that shipyard, and although his interactions with alyn are well-written, it still leaves him removed from the rest of the action. he teleports between there and dragonstone, but it's not until the last episode that you really get the sense that he's rhaenyra's hand even though he has been since episode 5 — he should have been present at dragonstone much more and earlier, and addam and alyn moved to dragonstone earlier to allow for more interaction too imo.
mysaria: clearly not her book counterpart, but i enjoyed her story this season a lot. do i think it's a bit on the nose the way mysaria speaks of rhaenyra as a cue for the audience but i'm hopeful it goes in a more interesting and nuanced depiction and in the meantime, i enjoyed their screentime
dragonseeds: meh. honestly, hugh's backstory is very cliche and i found his wife a far more interesting character but maybe that's just me, at the very least he's likeable and GETS a backstory. idc about ulf, at all bc idk who he is and his sole trait atm is being irreverent and in a story where you are personally attached to the characters he is insulting it doesn't make you sympathetic to him really (which is fine), but i would have rather seen rhaena claim sheepstealer which we built up all season, than watch ulf fly on silverwing for the simple purpose of having aemond see it so that he can become aware of rhaenyra's dragonseeds.
who gives a fuck about the triarchy and how jason lannister got them btw. just have that first meeting, even the 2nd mud fighting one okay but a THIRD scene in which he sings and gets asked to fuck someone's wives? this is a narrative choice that's being made, they could have just as easily had the triarchy capitulate and side with jason, but instead i'm treated to his aside of adventures in essos which would be fine but it's the FINALE and we need for these stories to culminate and you are giving me almost (almost) got-level writing.
anyways. sorry for all of this. i don't mean it to be hateful it's just me ranting 😭😭😭

by merlin’s magical pocket watch, is that ALASTOR MOODY, (PEDRO PASCAL) emerging from the veil? why, it’s been SIX since HE, CIS MAN died! they still look FIFTY THREE, a PUREBLOOD who went to HOGWARTS some time ago if i remember rightly. before they sided with THE ORDER during the FIRST AND SECOND war, they were a RETIRED AUROR living in THE HOUSE OF STORR. do we dare believe it’s really them? oh, i have so many memories of them… ALASTOR was a VEHEMENT & UNWAVERING, but it’s no secret that they were also PARANOID & SECRETIVE. they ought to be careful around the daily prophet reporters. having a nice cup of tea with them again makes me think of EMPTY GLASS  TUMBLERS SHATTERING AS THEY’RE THROWN INTO A  WALL, THE SWINGING LAMP FLICKERING ABOVE YOUR HEAD, ALWAYS SITTING WITH YOUR BACK TO THE WALL. we best keep an eye on them. someone will need to catch them up on all that’s been happening… and they must be looking forward to seeing NYMPHADORA TONKS again.

LUNA is a COMPASSIONATE & GENTLE, but it’s no secret that they’re also FLIGHTY & ZANY. they ought to be careful around the daily prophet reporters. having a nice cup of tea with them makes me think of AN AIR OF POLITENESS TOWARDS EVEN INANIMATE OBJECTS, HANDMADE EARRINGS DANGLING FROM DELICATE EARS, FEELING AT ONE WITH THE MOON. ah, well, you know what they say – the early fwooper gets the flobberworm, so enough reminiscing. let’s put our wands together and prepare ourselves. who knows who will emerge from that veil next…
