Phenomena (1985) When Jennifer attends a girls college she finds out there’s a killer on the loose, she finds herself becoming a detective to find out who it is, with her special powers she’ll prove to be a key asset! Argento’s work is usually a bit more... full bodied than this, but in this outing he peels it back a bit and uses a lot of skin crawling and stomach churning ideas to keep you engaged as opposed to the usual! Phenomena comes in 3 versions the latter being creepers released to the us that contains a more concise telling of the story. I enjoyed this and though at times the soundtrack was great it was also a bit... out there. I love flash of the blade and it is in this which creates the most dramatic hook a duck ever seen on tv! However I did find myself questioning some of the music selection. I found the ability that Jennifer has, which is an affinity with insects is severely underused and I’d have loved to have seen it utilised more in creative ways. There’s a couple of scenes it’s used to perfection but just not enough for me for such a unique ability! The films gross out factor is ever present and helps to contribute to the pretty one dimensional feel to the film, I mean let’s face it the films best lead is Inga the chimp! (Who May I add is just the best!) I’d have liked a bit more clarity in all, it’s pretty straight forward in the end yet explanations are quite shallow and it doesn’t quite embellish enough to give a comprehensive account on events! Overall, Phenomena is both charming and sinister. It’s a decent murder mystery that combines the supernatural with giallo film making to have its own unique entry with the likes of ‘The Fury’.
