You can. Which is good news for medical scanning and quantum computers Two centuries ago Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish physicist, demonstrated that the motion of an electric charge produces magnetism. This was the first observation of a wide-ranging phenomenon. The charged clouds of particles which float through the cosmos generate vast interstellar magnetic fields as they go. The sloshing of molten metal in Earth’s core produces the planet’s north and south magnetic poles. Even the firing of nerve cells in a human brain creates a minuscule amount of magnetism. The ubiquity of such electrically generated magnetic fields does, though, bring problems ranging from the pragmatic to the esoteric. Doctors looking at mri scans, for example, have to compensate for background magnetism. Meanwhile, experimentalists conducting precision tests may have to build complex shields to obscure the magnetic effect of something as simple as an electric wire running through the wall of their laboratory. #scienceworld #sciencefair #sciencefictionart #scienceart #phdlife🎓 #phdstruggles #phdchemistry #phdjourney #phdproblems #phdstudentsofinstagram (at Mexico City, Mexico) https://www.instagram.com/p/CHO-OUXDJF7/?igshid=1m79x4b8kj1xt

A recent article in Nature features voice of a budding researcher. Here’s a hypothetical example: imagine a scientist who was in the ‘made the tea’ middle position on a few publications in big-three journals. The ‘biggest’ paper is in a journal with an impact factor of more than 35, but a year earlier, that scientist had a paper published in a journal with an impact factor of just below 7. The big paper has been cited fewer than 40 times, and the smaller one has been cited more than 100 times. So which is more successful? And when early-career researchers like me are being assessed for funding or a more senior position, why does having a publication in one of these big-three journals matter so much more than all the other papers on our CVs? . . . . I want to do good science, work hard and do something good for the world. I hope academia gives me the time I need to achieve what it’s asking me for — but to do that, does it need to reconsider what it considers to be successful? Scientists form Max Planck Institute has found unique way At first glance, a pack of wolves has little to do with a vinaigrette. However, a team led by Ramin Golestanian, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, has developed a model that establishes a link between the movement of predators and prey and the segregation of vinegar and oil. They expanded a theoretical framework that until now was only valid for inanimate matter. In addition to predators and prey, other living systems such as enzymes or self-organizing cells can now be described. The image shows a programmable lattice of 1800 qubits, an exotic material designed by Andrew King and colleagues at D-Wave Systems Inc @d_wave_systems. They used quantum annealing processors to simulate a geometrically frustrated quantum magnet, which undergoes a topological phase transition. This is an important step towards Richard Feynmann’s vision of a programmable and universal quantum simulator. The paper was published in Nature and the authors discuss how they developed this programmable magnetic lattice on the Nature Research Device & Materials Engineering Community, Image from Andrew King.
