Srikhola
Srikhola – Travel and Stay
Srikhola is a quaint little village in the district of Darjeeling. Trekking routes from Sadakphu and Phalutare there, that pass through Srikhola leading towards Manebhanjan. You can also come here by road from Darjeeling or NJP/Siliguri. From Sandakphu, the trek route is 16 km to Srikhola via Gurdum. From Phalut, you can reach Srikhola via Gorkey and Rammam coveringa 36 km distance through vegetation and fauna of magnolia, oaks, chestnuts and rhododendrons, orchids and many more. Many trekkers on the way from Sandakphu or Phalut prefer to stay overnight at Srikhola for a break. You can sit and enjoy the beautiful and the meandering Srikholariver. Srikhola has a wonderful wooden hanging bridge and offers a beautiful landscape adorned with wooden cottages and vivid flower gardens. Srikhola is situated at the foothills of Singalila National Park. You can visit the park and see animals like Red Panda, Himalayan Black Bear, Barking Deer and many more. Consider yourself lucky if you can spot the animals. Walk through forests of various fauna and you can also go for fishing. Shovraj Hotel is the most popular hotel here and they provide fishing gears also. For sightseeing, you can various temples and monasteries in the nearby locations. Visit gardens of cardamom, peas, corn etc. Go on for short trekking tours and visit nearby villages like Rammam village, Timburey&Gurdum village and also the holy lake known as JareaoPokhri. April to May and October to November are the best times to visit Srikhola with little or no rainfall, relatively mild temperature and clear sky. In the winter month of December and January, the temperature drops down to minus degrees. There is a nice GTA (Gorkhaland Territorial Administration) hut located next to Srikhola river. There are few private hotels as well. The best being Hotel Shovraj as mentioned earlier. It is located by the Srikhola riverside and consists of many rooms with attached bathrooms. They are cottages with river facing balconies and restaurants as well. This is the best hotel in Srikhola. Shubhasish Sengupta who is the proprietor and owner of the property are the only Bengali family resident living permanently in the whole of Singalila Himalayan region where Srikhola is located. He has been running the hotel successfully since 2003. The hotel is more like a wooden country house. Tshering Sherpa, a very friendly and a cooperative man runs the budget hotel which is the next good option. The Goparma Lodge has 7 rooms including double, 4 and 5 bedded rooms with attached or common baths. Hot water facilities are provided. Both the hotels organize the local sightseeing tours. There are shared jeep services at two times of the day, from Srikhola. One is at 6 am and the other at around 11:30 am. You can also ask your hotel to book a reserved Jeep. Srikhola is not that popular a mountain hamlet. So do not expect great luxury accommodation over here. The hotels are mainly built for trekkers and budget travellers and offer basic and standard amenities. But as per the natural beauty is concerned, it is less than no other place in the entire Darjeeling district. Read the full article

The Landrovers of Darjeeling
The Landrovers of Darjeeling
Halfway up the long, tiring slog to the highest point in West Bengal (India), Sandakphu, I’m beginning to wish I was more Land Rover and less human. I’m trekking in the Singalila National Park on a ridgeline straddling West Bengal and Nepal, and am in the shadow of the Kanchenjunga range of the Himalayas. Famous for rhododendron blooms carpeting the mountainsides, this trek is also a great way to catch the panorama of Himalayan peaks stretching from Kanchenjunga in the east to Everest in the west.
Sandakphu at 3636m (11929ft) is a three day climb up the ridge. Or six bouncy, butt-numbing hours by Land Rover. That too a 1950s-vintage Land Rover, no less. The Land Rovers make it look so easy, climbing all the way in low gear, while I, mere human, resemble nothing so much as an antiquated relic on two legs, huffing and puffing my way up the ridge. Since the 1960s, these Land Rovers have been performing humble duty lugging mountain light seekers to Sandakphu or bringing up the cooking gas, fowl, potatoes and all the other rations that fuel tea houses and trekkers huts all the way to Phalut, at the confluence of West Bengal, Nepal and Sikkim. Often 12 people are crammed into these vehicles, with the unfortunate ones in the rear bench seats bouncing up and down on hard bench seats.
My guide and I had started the trek from a place called Maneybhanjang, 30 km from Darjeeling, which is also the home of the Singalila Land Rovers Association. The Association consists of a pool of 40 vehicles which take turns to haul passengers and rations to the trekking huts up in the mountains. Vintage car enthusiasts will be particularly excited seeing these Land Rovers which are largely of Series 1 (manufactured between 1948 and 1957) and Series 2 vintage (manufactured between 1958 and 1961). What makes these Land Rovers so unique is that these are the last few vehicles of this vintage being used on such a large commercial scale anywhere in the world.

Trektrail stories continues forever until I set forth for my next one !! . . So, that shanty little bamboo hut, that you all see in the picture was my third and interesting pit stop at Kalipokhri (@10000ft) enroute my tea-house trek to Sandakhphu (holy grail of trekker in the northeast part of India). This place is not even mapped when I tried to add the Google location ..here's where I got some mesmerising sunset captures. You can check out some of the sunset pics in my earlier post.🌄🌄⛺ 👇👇 Well the interesting fact was, this single tiny hut was a shelter to 10 trekkers..well ofcourse to mention the generosity of the local people who accommodated us all with an open heart due to non availability of proper homestay in last minute. Don't ask me how I managed 😋😋, but yeah twas surely some fun-filled experience. Singalila was notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1986, and as a national park in 1992. Singalila hosts one of the region’s oldest and most popular trekking routes (Manebhanjan-Singalila-Phalut).
It is one of the very few parks in India that are completely devoid of human settlement. However, a few villages such as Kala Pokhri have sprung up along the trekking route.
The Park was the site of the world’s first red panda relocation programme. In 2004, 2 red pandas from Darjeeling Zoo were released in Singalila. Naresh Bedi’s award-winning documentary, Cherub in the Mist, was based on this programme.
