Benevento (Campania). "Flans te alo" fountain & museums. Along the street, at the entrance to via De Juliis, half-hidden, you will find the bronze fountain "Flans te alo" (blowing you feed), dating back to the first half of the twentieth century. The aforementioned street gives access to Giudecca, the Jewish quarter, also known as Trescene. The neighborhood is the true heart of the ancient Samnite-Lombard historical center. The Sannio Museum is located just a block away along the street and is housed in the cloister of the church of Santa Sofia, in whose courtyard the Roman lapidary is exhibited (following photo). However, it also has other locations, including the Rocca dei Rettori (fortress of the rectors). It also includes a Hall of Isis, which contains the finds of the Benevento temple of the Egyptian goddess, erected by Domitian. Benevento (Campania). Garden of the Rocca dei rettori. The Rocca complex, in addition to the wing of the ancient castle, houses the Palazzo dei Governatori (of the Pope), which today is the seat of the Provincial Council and part of the Sannio Museum, as already mentioned. In front of the entrance is the garden, very popular, in which, in addition to Roman remains, there are works of contemporary art. Here we see suns, a memorial stone and a bronze stele bearing the inscription: "Habere samnites victoriam non praeclaram solum sed etiam perpetuam" (the Samnites had obtained not only a glorious victory, but also a lasting one ), quotation from book 9 of Tito Livio paragraph 6. Benevento (Campania). Church of Santa Sofia (760). The church, a Unesco world heritage site, is located along the Corso, in Piazza Matteotti or Santa Sofia, a dispute in progress. It was built by the Longobards, but remodeled several times, it first assumed the Romanesque style, then Baroque. The church was entitled in Greek to the Divine Wisdom of Christ (Αγίαν ΣοΦίαν), like the basilica of the same name in Constantinople, and built on the model of Liutprando's palatine chapel in Pavia. It became the official temple of the Longobards and of their prince Arechi II, who lost Pavia, had the last bastion of his gens in Benevento. In the eighteenth century the church, damaged by the earthquake, took on Baroque forms, from stellar to circular, which were subsequently further modified. The bell tower (1119-1703), is considerably distanced from the facade, on the edge of the ancient walls. On their walls it bears the coats of arms of the successive dominations and the marble tables evoking the extension of the ancient Sannio. Benevento (Campania). Basilica of San Bartolomeo Apostolo. The first temple dedicated to the apostle dates back to 839 and was adjacent to the Cathedral, it housed the body of the saint, brought to the city by the Longobard prince Sicardo. The church was rebuilt in 1122 in the current Piazza Orsini, but was destroyed twice by as many earthquakes between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In 1726 the church was built along the Course, in front of vico Santo Stefano and the saint was also transferred here. Benevento (Campania). Pontili gotici (gothic gangways) and galleries (14th century). To return to the Course, from the arch of Trajan, if you want to observe a piece of ancient Benevento, you can for example go up via Manciotti, soon you will meet the galleries of the vicolo San Nicola, the first of which bears an ancient painting of the Passion. This alley will lead us to via Mutarelli, where we will find some Gothic gangways and the De Cillis palace, in the middle of Judeca (medieval Jewish quarter). One of these gangway supports the palace, whose oldest residual parts date back to the century XI.
