An American-made trap with a swastika. This is from around 1910-1920 and made by the Peck, Stow & Wilcox Company - or PEXTO - out of Cleveland, Ohio. They have been around since around 1797.

Do you Love Metal Shaping and Hand Built Cars? Check out These Pictures from Metal Union Speed Shop.
Metal Union Speed Shop in Lilburn, Georgia might not be the oldest shop around, but while taking a walk through their impressive facility, one would never know that they’ve been in business less than 10 years. Even though the shop is young, the owner Field Farrar is no rookie and has amassed a collection of tools and equipment that makes this custom shop one of the most capable in the Southeast United States.
The layout and design of this shop is really impressive, and this is less than half of the facility. Talk about shop goals.
After starting in a small building he shared with a motorcycle shop, Field moved the business to his current building. It has three times the room, polished concrete floors and eight designated build slots with storage for each project’s parts against the wall right behind it. The place is immaculate and very well thought out, which helps them be efficient when building their customer’s dream machines.
Here is one of the cars built by Field and his crew at Metal Union. What started life as a 1936 Ford “humpback” sedan had the roof cut off and was converted to this absolutely gorgeous roadster powered by an LS1.
Metal Union seems to do a little bit of everything, which means they have everything from a Land Rover Defender to a COE project in the shop. What they take the most pride in are their metal shaping skills and the ability to engineer elegant solutions building masterpieces that are meant to be driven.
The most impressive piece of equipment in the shop has to be the Yoder power hammer complete with the cast base, a set of Yoder arms on one side, and a set of Pettingell Machine Company arms on the other.
Their metal shaping area is one of the most impressive we’ve ever seen and makes this shop look like it’s been around for ages. Rather than stocking the metal area with the latest in technology, Field filled it with equipment from the glory days of car building. This allows them to build these cars buy hand, allowing for much more artistry to be seen in the finished product. The walls are lined with old tools: the Pullmax shearing and forming machine, Eckold power shrinker/stretcher, Trident Tool English wheel, Chicago press break, Pexto shear, and Yoder and Pettingell power hammers are all pieces that have been around for decades. Many people are of the mindset that they just don’t make stuff the way they used to and this equipment proves that to be true.
Another amazing piece of equipment comes in the form of this massive chassis table with slots milled in it for jigging components. The vehicle being built on it now is a 1939 Doge Sedan with a fully custom chassis, a Gen III Hemi mounted behind the front seats, a Porsche transaxle, and Ford GT suspension.
The ability to shape panels on a production level with this equipment and their massive collection of tooling and dies has allowed the team at Metal Union to produce parts previously unavailable for purchase anywhere else. So far, they have focused on the 1936-39 Lincoln Zephyr and are actually in the process of converting a couple of sedans to the “holy grail” Zephyr coupe, but we’ll dive deeper into that in another story. Perhaps what might say the most about their metal shop is that metal shaping master, Ron Covell, actually came and hosted a workshop there just a couple months ago using their equipment.
Chastin Brand, a local pinstriper, hand-lettered and striped all the equipment to give it that little something extra. They even named the Eckold Kraftformer “The Bandit” in a nod to its black and gold color scheme.
To find out more about this impressive shop, you can find them on Instagram @metalunion or visit their website www.metalunionspeedshop.com, but for now just click through this gallery to see all the tool porn, amazing projects, and awesome stuff they have in their place.
In the foreground is the Pullmax machine, which they use to make all their floor pans and rockers. Behind it are the Chicago press brake, their louver machine, and the Rotex sheet metal punch.
When building a chassis, they will weld it to these perfectly flat and level steel plates on the floor. This way, the car remains straight and true during the construction process.
Here you can see a set of Proline thumbnail shrink dies set up in one of the power hammers ready to shape some metal with serious speed and precision.
In spite of all this impressive equipment, sometimes a stump and a hammer is the best way to make a panel for a given project.
This is Field Farrar’s personal car, a 1937 Lincoln Zephyr coupe-sedan complete with a supercharged LS1 under the hood. It’s parked on the final assembly/storage side of the shop with some artwork from graffiti artist Mister Totem in the background.
