Since this is #podcastsunday and The USA’s birthday, I wanna talk about “Back Story” @backstoryradio from Virginia Foundation for the Humanities.

Back Story is a nonfiction podcast where 3 historians review a topic in American history and look at it over time from the perspective of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. Be that sports, barbeque, slavery, consumerism, Christmas, you name it! Though the show recently ended 2020, they had 331 episodes–dating back to 2008–so they probably touched on it.

You can tell that these folks were having a good time, and because it was funded in part by the University of Virginia and the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, you can tell they had done their research as well.

In early shows, they said they had modeled themselves vaguely towards what if “Car Talk” was a history show. They, would take calls about history during a portion of the show, and though the format shifted away from that and more into segments, I have a soft spot for the idea of a call-in line to ask a historian a question.

I love this show because it breaks down history into digestible topics, it’s fun, engaging, and forthright, and all of the historians have such a good rapport with each other that even if you didn’t enjoy history much, you would enjoy listening to them interact.

The regular podfeed goes to 2015, but the website has all their back catelogy going back to 2008, when they were just on a local radio station. I’ve enjoyed them for a long time, and I hope you do too.
