Today's explorations brought us a couple of new birds. The first one was only today on a technicality, because it was a very wee hour indeed when Valdez let herself into our tent and woke me up to tell me there was a really weird animal outside and she knew I'd want to see it. Kibwana refused to get up, but Reynolds and I followed her to an old log, where we found this:
It looks something like a cross between a crane, a grey owl, and an anteater. It and its fluffier offspring were crouched by the log, tilting their heads back and forth to listen, and then they'd lick out with long tongues to catch insects. They didn't seem to need to open their beaks to do this, and I'm not actually sure they could open - I never saw them do so. If the adult needed to pull more of the log apart, it would use the four-inch blunt talon on the end of each otherwise useless wing.
Reynolds says the way the feathers fan out around each eye is actually an adaptation for hearing - it funnels sound into the ears like a radio dish. The adult bird was clearly aware of us and looked directly at us several times, but since we weren't coming any closer it didn't seem bothered as long as we didn't make any sudden movements. Eventually it got its fill of ants and wandered off.
We asked Valdez what she was doing so far from our campsite in the middle of the night. She said she wanted to get further from the fire (which we leave smoldering so the wildlife won't get too nosy) in order to look at the stars. Apparently she's been mapping them. She's even invented several constellations based on tools and animals. I guess we all have our little keep-sane projects.
She was telling me more about it around lunchtime, while the two of us were scrounging for edible plant material, when we got today's second bird. This one was a bastard.
It was very tiny, mostly black on top with an ochre-coloured underside patterned with black v's, and a white mark on the back of its neck. It was also very round with tiny feet and absolutely adorable. I couldn't believe how lucky I was when it landed on my arm and put its beak right up against my skin. I figured it was licking up sweat for salt or something. I was wrong.
After a second or two I realized a bead of blood was forming where it touched me, and when I took a closer look I saw that it actually had a very long, needle-like upper beak that had gone right into my skin without me even feeling it, and a very short lower beak that it opened to let its little tongue lap up the blood. I'm sure I took this in for just a split second, but it felt like I stared at for an hour, unable to move. The image is burned into my retinas. I keep seeing it when I close my eyes.
I hollered and shook it off me, and it flew away. Boonmee put some alcohol on the puncture and told me to watch it carefully for signs of infection. Other than that there's not a lot I can do but wait and see how many diseases the little bugger gave me.
We took several suggestions for the name of the vampire bird, but seem to have settled on Reynolds', which was White-Naped Syrinx. 'Syrinx' is a character from Greek mythology and also the root word from which we get 'syringe'. It is also apparently the word for a bird's voice box. This would be much more interesting to me if I didn't have a hole in my arm.
Somebody suggested calling the anteater bird an owlvark, but Vandebeek said 'aardvark' means 'earth pig' in Dutch, so a more accurate name would be 'aarduil'. When somebody writes a bestiary for this future, we now know what the first page will be.

Egretia - Bring Developers and HTML5 Terminals to the Blockchain World
Egretia Ad Platforms : Distributed Communications and Storage Platform :
As a cross-platform arrangement, HTML5 innovation has been internationally perceived. It covers the Internet, video, promoting and different ventures, with the worldwide market size of many billions dollars
This task participating with Egret Technology, an internationally understood HTML5 technology specialist organization, set up Egretia Blockchain Lab, joining blockchain with HTML5 technology to make the world's first HTML5 blockchain motor and platform, going for applying blockchain to vertical businesses. Bringing Egret technology’s current 200,000 designers and 1 billion portable terminal gadgets into the blockchain world, this undertaking has commonsense and broad criticalness
What is HTML5 Technology?
HTML5 is the most recent form of Hypertext Markup Language, the code that portrays site pages. It's really three sorts of code: HTML, which gives the structure; Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), which deal with introduction; and JavaScript, which gets things going
Utilizing the energy of portable long range informal communication, HTML5 content has been broadly scattered in versatile applications and made altogether new plans of action
What is BlockChain Technology?
A blockchain, originally square chain,is a consistently developing rundown of records, called pieces, which are connected and secured utilizing cryptography. Each square regularly contains a cryptographic hash of the past block,a timestamp and exchange data.By plan, a blockchain is characteristically impervious to adjustment of the information. It is "an open, circulated record that can record exchanges between two gatherings proficiently and in a certain and changeless way".For use as a disseminated record, a blockchain is regularly overseen by a shared system all in all holding fast to a convention for between hub correspondence and approving new squares. Once recorded, the information in any given piece can't be changed retroactively without the adjustment of every single consequent square, which requires agreement of the system dominant part.
Blockchains are secure by plan and embody an appropriated processing framework with high Byzantine adaptation to non-critical failure. Decentralized agreement has along these lines been accomplished with a blockchain. This makes blockchains conceivably appropriate for the chronicle of occasions, medicinal records, and different records administration exercises, for example, character management, transaction preparing, reporting provenance, nourishment traceability or voting.
World's First HTML5 Blockchain Engine and Platform In organization with Egret Technology, the worldwide pioneer in the HTML5 business, Egretia focused on building the world's first HTML5 blockchain motor and platform, joining blockchain technology with demonstrated devices, groups and substance of our accomplices, expecting to bring 200,000 developers and 1 billion mobile devices into the blockchain world.
Building a Decentralized HTML5 User Ecosystem
Fueled by the Egret Engine, HTML5 content has more than 75% promoting infiltration in the HTML5 business, covering in excess of 1 billion mobile devices furthermore, clients. We will join the Egretia blockchain with Egret HTML5 work processes. Utilizing a token system, each player will have a one of a kind ID in diversions controlled by the Egret Engine. This will assemble a strong establishment for a steady client ecosystem.
Creating an Ecosystem With True Token Circulation
In light of the client ecosystem of Egretia, we are dedicated to producing another computerized token that can be utilized as a part of all substance fueled by the Egret Engine: Egreten. • Developers will utilize settled devices + SDKs to rapidly create items that will utilize the Egreten token as installment. • Users can utilize Egreten to purchase in-amusement things, pay for content, and so on. • Users can utilize Egreten to participate in lotteries, rebates, and different advancements on Egretia over the world. • Users can get Egreten as reward through taking an interest in crowdfunding of recreations on Egretia. • Developers and substance distributers can utilize Egreten to promote on the Egretia promoting stage. • Distributors can get Egreten through substance conveyance, promoting, and so forth. • An Egreten computerized wallet is made in light of client's remarkable token travel permit, in request to ensure safe stockpiling of client's virtual resources, products, crowdfunding rewards, platform rewards, and so on.
Egretia key Products and Services
* Blockchain Game Dev Workflow : The world's initially entire HTML5 blockchain motor and improvement unit, will enable engineers to rapidly and productively create blockchain recreations and applications.
* Distributed Communications and Storage Platform : The stage will use the blockchain's hub mode, giving decentralized information correspondences also, capacity arrangements.
* Game Distribution Platform : This platform is our authority Egretia DApp: Players can get Egreten through the application, play HTML5 recreations on this platform , make installments through Egreten. Utilizing the Proof-of-Game (POG) instrument, players can get Egreten remunerates by playing or offering diversions to companions
* Virtual Goods Trading Platform : Utilizing Egreten, all players in Egretia recreations can exchange their virtual products on this platform.
* Egretia Ad Platforms : An exactness promoting framework, in view of blockchain KYC standards, brilliant contracts, and platform computerized tokens.
* Egretia Incubator : Our hatchery bolsters diversion improvement groups and people, making a scaffold amongst players and designers.
Egretia Features
* Egretia Features : We will give Egretia, a self-created, proficient open chain in light of the DPoS (Designated Proof of Stake) agreement component, going for streamlining HTML5 amusement execution. Through the blockchain interface layer, in mix with the Egret motor devices, designers can rapidly make blockchain-based DApps
*Consensus Mechanisms : The Egretia open chain will utilize a DPoS (Delegated Proof of Stake) as accord instrument. The DPoS system is like a board vote, where holders of coins cast a certain number of hubs, utilizing the system for check and accounting. DPoS can essentially diminish the quantity of taking an interest hubs for check also, accounting, it will have the capacity to accomplish agreement confirmation in a moment. The dependability of DPoS component has been checked in BTS, EOS and different undertakings
* High-Performance : Egretia is an open chain with high simultaneous handling power, where execution is advanced for the necessities of the diversion business. It has a quick TPS (Transaction Per Second) rate. Regardless, in blockchain innovation, an "outlandish triangle" exists, implying that adaptability, decentralization, and security can't be accomplished at the same time. Utilizing a DPoS component to significantly build adaptability, in excess of 2000 exchanges every second could be upheld in the underlying test chain. Later on, we will increment the TPS as indicated by business needs.
*Real time parameter adjustment : Egretia can change framework parameters without bifurcation: Instead, Egretia will be ready to change blocktime, blocksize, exchange charge and so forth through voting. Egretia can alter the framework parameters without bifurcation: Instead, Egretia will have the capacity to understand a dynamic change of parameters, for example, blocksize, yield speed, and dealing with charge through voting strategy in view of agreement.
*Convenient and efficient development tools : The demonstrated devices of Egret establishes a strong framework for the Egretia blockchain venture, making blockchain application improvement basic, advantageous and effective.

Mating season must be over, because Steve has shed his fluffy tail feathers and the colour has faded out of his wattles and combs. The others are bugging us about eating him already but we promised we wouldn't until he became a father so I guess Steve gets to live another year.
The mounds the male churkeys build turned out to have a secondary purpose: the females take them apart for nesting materials. The nests are uncomplicated little knots of grass and twigs in which they lay four to six eggs, a bit bigger than chicken eggs and sometimes with spots or blotches on them. With their bit done, the males just bugger off - we haven't seen any except Steve in days - and leave the hens to do all the incubating.
We have also learned that the churkeys can fly, they're just not very good at it. One of them managed to become briefly airborne while she chased me and Kibwana away from her nest. With the mother thus occupied, Kelleher came in from the other direction to steal the eggs. We scrambled them. They taste like regular eggs but somehow more so.
Anyway, please enjoy some aesthetically interesting mushrooms.

We have finally identified one of our mystery animals! We still don't know what the Large Herbivore is, or what killed the macawk in the grass, but we have a face for the Night Screamer.
Having made an uneasy peace with our fowl neighbours, we resumed poking around cataloging the local flora. In the process we discovered our second ungulate, a cute little fellow only about thirty centimetres tall at the shoulder. Like the hookhorns it appears to be some kind of goat, though its horns are very short and rounded, kind of like a giraffe's. There turned out to be four of them - and a dog.
Yes, these things have their own watchdog. Like the ones that accompanied the hookhorns, they are very similar to the goats in build and colouration. All five animals were under the cover of low plants and appeared to be sleeping until we discovered them. That woke them up, and the watchdog took up a defensive position between us and its charges and began to bark and snarl furiously. Not wanting our toes to be savagely gnawed, we retreated.
Wang wants to call the ungulates Cabruahuas, like a cross between Cabra (goat) and Chihuahua (chihuahua). There's still no sign of any other humans here, so the dogs probably aren't trained... but if they just do this, then why? They don't seem to be getting anything out of it.
This has been bugging me ever since Kibwana and I first saw the hookhorns, so I did what any sensible person would clearly do. Figuring these must be nocturnal, I sat up in a nearby broccotree half the night to watch what they did - and I still don't believe what I saw. After dark the cabruahuas came out to start nibbling on low foliage, while the watchdog caught mice and birds that the herbivores disturbed. Then when the goats settled down to do some cud-chewing, the dog went to two different ones and nursed.
I'm pretty sure the dog is an adult, so why is it drinking milk? Most adult mammals can't digest milk, humans are actually weird that way. Fresh milk doesn't seem like a good enough reason for the dogs and the ungulates to stick together like this, so there must be something else going on. We're just not seeing it yet.
After a short rest the little herd and their companion wandered off further into the woods and I decided to head back. I didn't want to nod off and fall out of the tree. I had just touched the ground when the Night Screamer started its yowling, sounding like it was right next to me.
I don't even remember climbing back up the tree. I clung to the trunk as it got louder and louder, and closer and closer. I thought I was about to be killed by Bigfoot or something. Then it emerged from the rhubarb and revealed itself to be this bizarre koala-cat thing, no bigger than the goats, that proceeded to howl like a tortured soul six or seven more times. It swiveled its huge ears listening to a reply that came from somewhere out across the grassland, and then seemed satisfied and started climbing the tree. For a moment it was startled to find me there, but I was evidently not threatening, because the little tree gremlin just gave me a contemptuous look and continued on up.
The noise may be a way of establishing territory or something. I really don't care. I'm just glad it wasn't big enough to eat me. This one doesn't need a new name, it's been a Night Screamer since day one, and a Night Screamer it may stay.

The megafauna have arrived.
So far most of the animals we've seen have been pretty small, with only hints of larger ones. Now that the river has swollen to nearly two hundred metres wide and everything is blooming, the big stuff is migrating back from wherever the hell it's been all dry season. Everything came to drink at once and I barely know where to begin.
The most eyecatching ones are another goat-looking thing, which we have named the Spandauer because the red and white stripes look like the filling of a cherry-cheese pastry. They move in herds of one male and six to ten females - the males are easy to identify because they have long horns with what looks like some kind of fungus growing on them. Each group also has its own pair of watchdogs. Several of these little herds would meet at the river and the males would bleat at each other and swing their heads around, but they never actually fought like the hookhorns did. The dogs do their best to keep the groups separate.
Moving up the scale there are these huge shaggy brown beasts that Kelleher named the Triceracow because there's no other way to describe them. The males have huge horns, like longhorn cattle, and are very aggressive. Any thought of making burgers out of them evaporated quickly when they started bellowing at each other. They don't have dogs, and the dogs that accompanied the hookhorns and spandauers made sure their charges kept their distance.
I feel like this is important. The dogs are a goat-only phenomenon, so far as we know. Do the triceracows just not need them because they're big enough to defend themselves?
Finally and biggest of all, there's this... fucking thing.
We don't know what this is. It resembles nothing we know of. We cannot think what it evolved from. It's ten feet tall with no hair, buck teeth, big claws, and the eyes of a creature that has gazed into the abyss and saw the abyss gazing back. It seems to be an herbivore and might actually be the origin of the giant pile of poo we found in the woods, but it is clearly something that could kill you without even noticing and we will be doing our utmost to avoid that situation.
It needs a suitably terrifying name. Unfortunately, I jokingly referred to it as the Giant Bingus and that's what we're calling it now. If I get killed by one of these I will know why.

After nearly a week the rain finally stopped, the sun came out, and everything burst into bloom. The tops of the Flower Towers have put out blue blossoms, the broccotrees have white ones, little viny things that grow on the bamboo palms have turned out to be magenta orchids like the ones you used to buy at the supermarket, and the entire grassland looks like a pride parade! Commander Singh, Kelleher, and Wang are all hiding in a tent with massive hayfever but the rest of us went out and frolicked. We rolled around in it and threw handfuls of petals at each other like kids. Even the weaselschnitzel got in on the fun, tearing around chasing each other like... well, like small dogs.
Boonmee has become convinced by our behaviour that at least one type of pollen here contains a psychoactive. She is madly sampling and sorting to try to find out which. Rossi, however, thinks we're just happy to see flowers. He points out that we were in space for nine years (there's a reason all applicants had to be unmarried, childless, and under thirty), during which time the only plants we saw were the ones in the hydroponic garden. All this colour has us high as kites on our own endorphins.
And there are bees! There are several kinds but none of us know anything about entomology so we're sorting them by size. The bees are a source of great joy for some reason.
Oh, and it turns out the shiny churkeys are the male ones, which had occurred to us but we couldn't be sure before. The reason they were so interested in our tents is because I guess their shtick is to find a high spot and crow like a rooster, then do a silly dance to try to convince the ladies they're husband material. Steve got fully rejected on his first attempt and looked so sad we wished we could buy him a beer. We are planning to eat Steve eventually, but not until he's gotten laid. Our man deserves to die happy.

The source of the skin-peeling yowling while we try to sleep remains unidentified. When we find it we're killing it on principle.
Kibwana had one of his brilliant ideas today: we could take the netted bags we used to secure items in microgravity and repurpose them for fishing! He and I took a couple of them apart and sewed them together into a bigger net, then went looking for a place where the river had a couple of big plants close enough to string it between. We found one in a spot that was particularly dense with what we've been calling bamboo palms, and the cover there allowed us to witness something absolutely buckwild.
Movement in the grass caught our eyes, and a creature like a small deer or slender goat, about two feet tall at the shoulder, emerged. It had cloven hooves and a goatlike beard, though it was otherwise short-haired, pale on the back and belly but with caramel-coloured markings in the same sort of places where a panda would be black. Its horns grew back and straight for about three quarters of their length before abruptly curving forward, which led us to call this a Hookhorn Goat.
The shocking thing, though, was the creature that came and cut the first hookhorn off from entering the water. This animal had very similar markings to the hookhorn and was about the same size, but with no horns or beard, and paws instead of hooves. For a moment we couldn't figure out why its face looked so weird until we realized it wasn't an ungulate at all. It was some kind of dog.
There proved to be about two dozen of the hookhorns and two of the dogs. The first dog kept the hookhorns back, while the second sniffed around the water's edge looking for anything dangerous. Kibwana and I stood stone-still and tried not to breathe. When the dog was satisfied, it rejoined the group, and the two of them herded the hookhorns across the river, swimming on either side to keep them all together.
The opposite bank happened to be steeper and less boggy, so the animals climbed out and shook off, then began to graze. Kibwana and I didn't want to scare them so we continued to hide, watching as best we could from about fifty metres away. Two of the male hookhorns had a beef about something, so they started shaking their heads at each other. That seemed to be a signal to the dogs to separate them from the rest of the herd, which they did. Then the males put their foreheads together and shoved, until one of them caught the hook of his horns on the straight part of his rival's and used that leverage to tip him over. The loser got up, and they did best out of three before one wandered off to nurse his pride while the winner went back to eating, and the dogs let everybody mingle again.
For obvious reasons, we're calling them Watchdogs.
When we told the story back at the landing site, Commander Singh didn't believe us. She thought we must have been mistaken about what we saw, because you can't have shepherd dogs on a planet with nobody to train them. Other reactions were mixed. Some people thought this must mean there are still humans somewhere nearby... but if there were, wouldn't they have come to investigate us by now?
We did catch some fish, though, along with some things that look like fish but aren't. Now... to figure out which ones are edible.

Finally something we can eat! We're calling this one the Gigaduck. Seven of them flew in this morning, honking up a storm, and landed in the boggy area to look for food. The small animals we've seen scurrying about are very wary of us, and even the quite large macawk didn't want us getting too close, as if they can sense we don’t belong in this world. These things, on the other hand, gave no fucks whatsoever, so we were able to get a really good look.
Gigaducks are around a metre and a half tall if they stretch, and nearly seven kilograms, hence the 'giga'. They've got a long neck and long legs for wading, but something about them is still very definitely duck-shaped. Plumage is mostly dark brown but with a white patch on each cheek, the feet and beak are powder blue, and the neck and back have some purplish iridescence. The beak is very wide, so when they face directly towards you their beady little eyes are way too far apart. The eyes are blood red and filled with the malevolence of all their dinosaur ancestors.
They seem willing to eat basically anything, just dipping their beaks in the water and nibbling around until something comes too close. Ireland (who despite her name is actually Australian) suggested they might have electroreceptors in their beaks to help them hunt, like platypus. We saw them eating water plants, a few crabby-looking things, small fish, and even one of the aquatic hamsters. The image of a giant duck swallowing a live hamster whole is probably going to haunt my nightmares for a while.
But since they are evidently ducks, the next logical question was whether we could eat them. To this end we lured one in with rations and then strangled it with wire. This did not go as smoothly as we might have hoped. The rest of the flock flew away honking like foghorns, but we triumphantly plucked, weighed, carved, and barbecued our victim. The meat was very lean and red, tasting like a cross between beef and dark meat of poultry. Needed seasoning, but I guess we'll work on that.

Update: the Giant Bingus is definitely our mystery large herbivore. We know this because we saw one gnaw branches off a broccotree and then take a dump.
Also Update: the gigaducks definitely have eggs now. They seem to be taking turns sitting on them and there are guards posted to keep us (and everything else) getting anywhere near their nests in the lander. Not that we're getting close to the river anyway, what with all the megafauna around. We saw a tarasque take the leg off a triceracow. Just crunched it right off like a carrot stick. The cow managed to flee on its three remaining limbs but ended up lying down and bleeding to death, so at least we got some steaks. Reynolds, who is from Florida, has speculated that tarasques might be like large crocodiles and alligators, which can go for months without food.
Update the Third: One of Kibwana's pet poison puff caterpillars died but the other one has pupated and emerged as a butterfly that looks very boring and brown with its wings folded but shows black and white stripes with them open - like the pink, we figure this is a Don't Eat Me I'm Toxic sign. He released it and it flew away to do butterfly stuff. Godspeed, little dude!

It is still raining. I'm sitting here playing bridge with Reynolds, Kibwana, and one of the shiny churkeys - we have named him Steve and he's not very good at bridge so we usually make him the dummy hand. Vandebeek and Ireland next door have found another way to entertain themselves and they think they're being quiet but they're not. She laughs during orgasm. I'm not sure my self-esteem could handle that.
I've been doing a lot of thinking about knowledge, and specifically how much of it will die when we die. Even useless knowledge, like Vandebeek's interest in ancient languages or Kelleher's encyclopedic expertise on Pokémon. Or this card game - we three all know how to play it, but if we don't teach our kids (and we kind of have to have kids if humans are gonna survive) then it's gone forever. You could say a game isn’t very important, but I remember how excited people were to rediscover the rules of the Egyptian game of Mehen. That was a connection to the past, to the very origins of civilization. My sister and I made ourselves a set and played it for hours.
Our descendants won't have that. What came before us is gone and we can never, ever get it back. Not only will my future kids never play Mehen, they won't even play Hungry Hungry Hippos. They will certainly never eat pierogis or make wycinanki.
I guess I can give them approximations of those things if I want to, but they won't mean anything. Cutting out paper snowflakes is fun by itself but the motifs my Grandad taught me are all plants and animals that are long extinct and tied to religions that seem pretty irrelevant from here. It'll be the same for the others. We all come from places and peoples that no longer exist.
I think I'm gonna teach everybody how to play Mehen.
