~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There were three rules that came with being in the theater department at Los Feliz High School.
Rule One: No talking in the wings.
From the moment I met my co-star Reggie Peters at auditions, I knew he was going to be a pain to work with.
For example, he did not prepare an audition song. Instead, he broke out a guitar and took a request from Mrs. Harrison and wowed with his impressive vocals instead. His lines were half memorized and his wardrobe was not fit for the dance portion of the audition.
For Christs sake we’re doing NEWSIES!
The rehearsal period was over a month long and every week about thirty students crammed into the auditorium to relentlessly rehearse and prepare for opening night.
My character, Katherine, didn’t dance much other than in King of New York. The big tap dance number I had to master next week.
A lot of my time was spent waiting in the wings for my next cue. Unfortunately, so was Reggie’s.
“Wait was that my cue?”
“SHHHHH!” I said, looking anxiously to see if the stage manager on the other side of the stage heard us.
“Oh come on,” he said, “they can’t hear me over the music.”
I rolled my eyes before grabbing his hand and dragging him to the hallway of dressing rooms right behind the stage.
“Do you seriously not know anything?”
He looked at me confused.
“The rules of being in theater?” I said, when he shrugged I continued, “One, no talking in the wings. Two, no eating or smoking in costume. And three, always show up early or else you’re late.”
“I didn’t think this was that serious.”
I scoffed, “Why did you even sign up for this?”
He shrugged, “Mrs. Harrison cornered me in English and said she needed someone who could actually sing for Jack Kelly.”
I rolled my eyes, “You better keep your mouth clean. I don’t want to have to kiss someone who’s breath stinks every weekend.”
Suddenly, the door we just came out popped open.
“(Y/N)! It’s almost your cue! Reggie, what are you doing out here?” Julie whispered.
“Nothing. Let’s go Reginald.”
“It’s Reggie!”
Rule 2: No eating in costume
The snack table near the dressing room was kept stocked with lots of different things, and it was meant for those out of costume or stagehands since we didn’t get to eat dinner until afterwards on show nights.
I’d never been a stickler about eating in costume considering I’ve done it myself numerous times. At least I was always careful about it though, putting on a jacket or blanket over me to keep stains from getting on the meticulous costumes our school would make.
“What are you doing?”
I tried to keep my voice low, but the shock and panic that went through me when I saw orange smears on Reggie’s vest from the pack of Cheetos in his hand made it come out in a squeek.
He looked up at me frantically, “I forgot!”
I huffed in frustration before running into the womens dressing room to grab paper towels.
Reggie tried to take them from me when I came out but I slapped his hand away.
“You’ll try to rub it, you need to pat the stain out.”
The wet paper towel made the brown vest look darker, but at least I got the orange out.
I grabbed his hand and dragged him back into the dressing room, “Stand there.”
He stood where I pointed right beside the electrical outlet and watched me silently as I plugged in the hair dryer and set it to the cool setting. I put it on it’s lowest setting so I could carefully listen so we wouldn’t be late for our cues. Luckily it was Pulitzer’s solo so we should have enough time.
I looked up and noticed his cheeks were red, “What? It isn’t too hot is it?”
“Uh- no I just- we’re in the dressing room alone-”
“And I’m getting the stain out of your shirt so Katie won’t go nuts when she sees your costume almost ruined. No one’s gonna say anything Reggie, especially not to me. This happens more than you think.”
He nodded and looked down at the vest. It was still slightly damp but not enough to be noticeable on stage.
“Thank you,” Reggie said as I pulled the door open.
“Next time put a jacket on before you eat. Three simple rules Peters. Remember them.”
Rule 3: Always show up early or you’re late
It was almost the end of our show run. The past few weeks had been amazing and it was saddening to think that tonight I would have to say goodbye to Katherine.
As I sat in my dressing room I heard a knock at the door, Julie entered and stood behind me as I pinned my hair up for my wig.
“Have you seen Reggie? It’s almost 10 minutes till places.”
“No I haven’t, has he messaged Luke about being the understudy?”
She shook her head, “Katie said he hadn’t.”
I felt anxiety rise in my chest, hopefully we wouldn’t have to delay the show just to get someone in costume.
I peaked my head outside and just as I did Reggie Peters came sprinting down the hallway.
“Where have you been?”
“I got a flat on the way, how much time do I have?”
“10 minutes till places. If you hurry you might not be late.”
He nodded.
“Rule number 3 Peters!”
He shouted over his shoulder back at me, “I know!”
I rolled my eyes. Having pity for the boy, I decided to try and help.
I went and grabbed his mic from the stage manager and updated her on the situation. With it in hand I went back to his dressing room and knocked.
“Come in!”
Reggie stumbled around the room finding pieces of his costume to pull on.
“Sit,” I said once he had the pants and shirt on.
I handed him the vest and tucked the mic pack into the back of his belt before letting him run the wire up through the shirt.
“Do your hair, I’ll get the makeup ready.”
He tousled his hair and I couldn’t help but stare. Him clearing his throat brought me back to reality and I began applying the foundation and powder to his face. The entire time I felt his eyes looking at me causing my face to become unexplainably hot.
Finally I pressed a cut up makeup sponge covered in black and gray eye shadow to give him the look of a dirty newsie.
“All done,” I said. I tried to stand up quickly so I could go and get my face to not feel like it’s on fire.
He grabbed my wrist, “Thank you.”
“For what?”
He sighed, “You’re always helping me with something.”
“Well,” I smiled, “Hopefully you’d do the same for me if the situation was reversed. Besides theater geeks look out for each other.”
“I’m not a geek!”
I laughed, “It’s almost time for places. Let’s go Peters.”
The final curtain call had most of the cast in tears. This was the night we’d have to put all the props away and say goodbye to Newsies.
I neatly put my costume away before turning off my dressing room light for one last time.
I’ll admit. Working with Reggie wasn’t all that bad. At least he was a good kisser and took a mint before the finale each night.
I pulled my duffle bag over my shoulder and walked towards the entrance of the school.
“(Y/n)!”
I looked behind me to see Reggie jogging to catch up with me.
“The rest of the crew is going to iHop, are you coming?”
“I dont know,” I said, “I’m kinda tired.”
“Come on,” he groaned.
“No Reginald I’m tired and sad the show ended.”
He smirked, “And going with the rest of the cast will make the grief a little less.”
I rolled my eyes.
“Please?”
I walked off leaving him to trail behind me.
“Please (Y/n)!”
“Why do you want me to go that bad Reginald?”
“It’s Reggie,” he said, I smirked, “And... I don’t know anyone else that well.”
 I stopped and turned to him, he looked slightly embarrassed.
“Please? I don’t wanna go by myself.”
I sighed, “Fine. But you’re buying me a milkshake.”
He smiled widely and before I could react pressed a kiss to my cheek.
As he pulled back he realized what he had done causing us both to blush.
“Is that against the rules?”
Sirius x Reader- One Adventure
Hey! Could you do a Sirius Black x reader where the reader is dating some other guy and Sirius is jealous and one day he tells him/her about how he feels but the reader doesn't feel the same and it's AnGsTy jjdjcjsjd
“You going to join us then?” Sirius asked, slinging his arm around your shoulders, a warm smile on his face as you walked beside him.
“And get detention again?” You scoffed. “I think not. Besides, I’m sorry Sirius, but I’ve got a date tonight,”
“But you’re always hanging out with that bloke,” Sirius whined, stomach churning at the thought of another man being able to hold you and love you as he wanted to. “We never see you anymore,”
“That bloke is my boyfriend, thank you very much,” You shot back as you ducked underneath Sirius’ arm to free yourself. “And you know I don’t mean to skip out on plans but I’m busy. James does the same thing with Lily, it’s just a part of growing up,”
Sirius wanted to scream. Losing you, losing the girl he loved most, would never be a part of “growing up”. It was absolute torture and you couldn’t see the way he stayed up all night, asking whatever gods were out there for them to make you see that you two would be perfect together.
You noticed Sirius’ dejected expression and sighed. “Oh don’t go giving me those puppy dog eyes...  Just tonight then, alright? I’ll come but you better not get me in trouble!” You scolded as Sirius immediately perked up, jumping and howling for joy.
“See you in the courtyard at ten, L/N!” He exclaimed, pressing a wet kiss to your cheek that you quickly swiped at with the sleeve of your jumper.
“Get on then, you’ve got potions,” You laughed, shoving him towards the dungeons as you made your way to transfiguration.
“What do you mean don’t come tonight?” James was puzzled as Sirius had them all gathered in the common room. “It was the perfect prank, Snivellus won’t know what’s coming to him,”
“I’ve got more important things to do,” Sirius grinned. “I got Y/N to agree to hang out with us and-”
“Sirius, no,” Remus butt in, shutting down his best friend’s thinking. “You can’t tell her, she’s happy right now, can’t you let her be?”
“But what if she feels the same?!” Sirius argued. “I can see it sometimes, she isn’t the same with me as she is with the rest of you. I can just feel it Moony... Y/N is special, imagine all the adventures we could go on. I can see a future with her,” Sirius admitted, pleading his dear friend to understand. “I can’t go any longer without telling her.”
Peter sighed, “Do whatever you want Sirius, we just don’t want to see you hurt,”
“No worries Wormtail!” Sirius grinned, “Nobody can say no to this,” He trailed his hands down his chest winking at his pals who groaned in annoyance.
“We won’t show, just get out of here,” Remus teased Sirius in mock disgust.
You should’ve known something was wrong when you had arrived in the courtyard and only Sirius was there. You should have left when he stuttered an excuse for why the other marauders couldn’t come. You should have ignored it when he called you pretty for the third time in not as many minutes, wiping his hands nervously on his jeans.
You shouldn’t have asked, “Everything alright?”
Sirius seemed to snap out of the anxious daze he was in, smiling brightly as he managed to gain back his composure. “Everything is perfect, if you’ll just do one thing for me,”
Your heart dropped in your stomach, your mind was screaming No! Don’t say it! Don’t ruin us. We’re friends, don’t ruin us! Yet Sirius didn’t here your silent pleading as he grabbed your hand in his, a gentle look in his eye that made you burn more than it made you melt.
“Sirius-” Your voice shook as you tried to stop this inevitable mistake.
“Y/N, please,” He interrupted softly, thumb stroking the back of your hand. A gesture that had once been comforting was now unsettling, you weren’t ready for him to tell you, you weren’t ready to hurt him.
Sirius thought the clamminess of your hands had been from nerves, but more excitement than anything and the wavering of your voice brought on by butterflies in your stomach. He smiled at you as he held your hand in his, under the moonlight.
“I know this might be a surprise,” He continued, not noticing the warning signs. “but Y/N, I love you and I can treat you better than he can, I can be better than he is. From day one it’s been you and me, we are inevitable, can’t you see? Oh, imagine it, the life we could live, the adventures we could take, the love we could have! We could-”
“No,” You squeaked, hand tearing away from his. “Sirius don’t go any further,”
“But-” Sirius started, puzzled, his stomach churning as you distanced yourself from him, now arm’s length away.
“I love you, I do, so much,” You said, voice shaking nearly as bad as your hands. “But Sirius, I only love you as a friend,”
His expression fell along with his heart and it just continued to plummet, his skin came alive as if he had been shocked by a live wire. You were looking him straight in the eye and it made his feel as if a black hole had opened up inside, swallowing everything and leaving him hollow. You stepped forward, a sad, pitying look in your eye.
“Sirius, please, I don’t want this to change us, I love you,”
“Dont say that to me,” He begged, legs suddenly feeling like jelly as he took one step back. He’d been the moth, drawn to your flame but now he only felt the burn.
“Siri...” You whimpered. “I do love you! Just...just not like that,”
“But we could do so much, go so far,” Sirius argued, as if you might suddenly change your mind.
“We still can, as friends,” You pushed, knowing you still wanted him in your life but not being able to give him your heart in the way he wanted. “Sirius why? Why bring this up when you know I have a boyfriend?”
“Because I can be more, I can be better than him” He said but his voice had lost it’s charisma and conviction. Sirius Black felt embarrassed, ashamed, alone.
“I’m happy, Sirius,” You emphasized in the hopes that would be enough for him. “If you truly love me as you say you do, don’t you want me to be happy?”
“If you love me, you would want me to be happy too,” He lashed out, biting his lip as he began to feel like a caged animal. He wanted to get away. He couldn’t handle this.
“I know that you wouldn’t be happy if I lied to you...” You reasoned. It seemed to break through as his eyes softened, exhaling a long breath that seemed to take all his energy.
“Could you ever see yourself with me?” Sirius had to ask, eyes wide and sad, misty with emotions that he wouldn’t allow himself to let out until was alone.
You shook your head gently, as if you didn’t want it to be true either. “I’m sorry, but no,”
It was the blow to his heart that he couldn’t reason with. She doesn’t want you, she has never wanted you. Idiot, idiot, idiot, idiot, his mind screamed at him.
You watched him carefully, not sure of how he was going to react. You surely weren’t expecting it though when he started to laugh, a deep and loud laughter that echoed throughout the courtyard and against the stars in the sky. “Of course, Y/N Y/L/N, the girl I love is the only girl who doesn’t want me,”
It might sound conceited but it had been a very long time since someone hadn’t fallen for his charm. He wasn’t used to it. If it had been anyone else saying no, it would be easier, he knew that. This was real love, or he thought it was.
“You’ll find someone,” You promised, trying to ease his pain somehow. He was still your friend. “And they’ll be ready to go on any adventure you have planned,”
“You’re the best adventure I could ever go on and the one adventure I’ll never be able to take,” He seemed to process your words now, the weight sinking in and crushing him where he stood as his shoulders slumped, his ability to stand tall in bad situations failing him. It seemed the burden of heartbreak was too large to carry on his own.
“You’ll find someone,” You repeated, unsure of what else to say.
With a shake of his head, Sirius was storming out of the courtyard, unshed tears in his eyes. there would be a day when he could look back on this and say you had made the right decision, you had done good and he was better off for it. But for now, he could only feel the hurt and drown in it.
