Guide to “Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town” (Switch)

This is a post containing tips and tricks for all skill level players of Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town, a cute farming simulator based on OG Harvest Moon.  I play on the Switch, so all information is verified for the Switch version only.  Some little snippets of this are copypasted from other sources but I've verified 99% of them myself.  Feel free to reblog with added tips or corrections.

First and most importantly, the burning question: YES, you can be gay in Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town.  You can also adopt a pet penguin.  That should be reason enough to give this one a try.

IN-GAME TUTORIALS

Bookshelves like the one in your house or the one at the library contain all the useful tutorials on the game.  I recommend reading through those first.  Helpful tutorials will also pop up when you purchase animals, telling you all about how to care for them.

You also want to check the "Education" channel on tv every day.  Don't worry, the programs are short and you can Cancel-button out of these programs if they seem like old news.  

SAVING AND SLEEP

Unlike a lot of farming simulators, you can save any time in SoS FoMT.  Just go to your menu and chose "write in journal."  The game also autosaves at 6am when you wake up.

Sleeping each night does not save the game but it is important because it replenishes two different stats.  These stats are Stamina (represented by the power berries in the upper right hand corner of your screen) and Fatigue (represented by the smiley face in the upper right hand corner of the screen.)  If you get too low on Fatigue, you will pass out and lose a day while you rest in the clinic.  You can tell when you're getting close to this because the smiley face will turn green (warning) and then blue (you're in trouble.)  Bathing in the hot springs also replenishes both Stamina and Fatigue.  As far as my own experiments go, you should be alright if you don't overwork with tools and you go to bed sometime between 1 and 2am.  You can stay up a little later without fainting but there is a chance you may "sleep in" the next day (the day will start at 10am).

After you get several house upgrades at Gott's Workshop you will unlock the Bathroom feature.  This is a house upgrade that lets you recharge 1-2 power berries worth of stamina in one half hour.  It's not as efficient as the hot spring, but it can be useful in a pinch.

ROMANCE

To find out if a character can be married just pay attention to the screen when you talk to them.  There will be a little heart under their picture if you can marry them.  This heart will change color to indicate your progression as you court them.  You can also check the "Residents" option from the menu to see everyone in town and their heart meters (except, I think, the Goddess, Huang, and Kappa, whose heart meters are secret.)  There will also be musical notes to indicate how platonically friendly you are with various people.

To court a character just talk to them everyday and give them items that they like.  If you're interested in a character, google their name to find a wiki page with their complete likes and dislikes.  Giving them items they dislike will decrease their affection for you, so avoid that.  You can also save before giving them a gift and reload the game if the gift didn't go well.  Wrapping a gift at the store makes it a tiny bit more potent.

Characters will also gradually lose affection for you over time if you don't talk to them.  This happens very slowly, so don't worry about it too much.  The exception is the Sprites, who seem to lose musical notes very quickly if you use them for farm labor.

The Goddess and Kappa both have a marriage criteria that requires you to admit to the Goddess that you're interested in one or the other. If you admit to her that you're interested in Kappa, then you can't marry the Goddess; likewise if you pick the Goddess, then you can't marry Kappa.

To get married, you'll need to:

Raise your love level to a red heart color (60,000 LP) See the candidate's heart events (google your candidate's name to find out where and when these happen) Remodel your house to a large size (at Gott's Workshop) Buy the Large Bed (at Gott's Workshop) Give the Blue Feather to propose marriage (available at the store after you see all your lover's heart events.)

You'll also need to have given your lover the "Preserved Flower."  Google "Preserved Flower" to find out how you come about this, but basically the tl;dr is that you automatically get access to it during your first Fall.

Your wedding will automatically be scheduled on your farmhouse calendar. The ceremony will take place 7 days after your propose (e.g., if you proposed on a Wednesday, your ceremony will be the following Wednesday). If a festival is scheduled to take place on the same day as your wedding, your ceremony will be moved to the next day. Your wedding can take place on the same day as a villager's birthday.

After you get married, the other candidates' heart meters will disappear.  If you want to see their heart events, wait to propose until you've done so.

PLANTING

The game encourages you to plant seeds in the classic 9x9 square, though you are able to walk through crops and trelisses, so that may not be necessary.  1 bag of seeds plants a 9x9 square.  You can buy seeds at the General Store or from Huang once you have befriended him by giving him Gold Ore.  

NATURE SPRITES

As soon as possible in the game you will want to befriend the Sprites, who live in the north of town in a hut behind the church.  Buy some wheat flour at the general store and give each sprite a bag every day until they have at least four musical notes of friendship with you.  Then you will have the option of "ask for help."  Sprites help with farm chores like watering crops, harvesting, and taking care of the livestock.  Each sprite can water about 5 or 6 9x9 squares of crops each day, so if you have a big field, hire multiple Sprites.  I recommend hiring them each for 7 days.  Remember to check each morning if you have any Sprites working for you and how many days they have left; you can do this by going to the menu screen and checking "nature sprites" in the same menu as "Residents," "Animals," and "Pets."

Sprites that care for your livestock will not talk to them / pet them, so you still need to do that.  Also, they will automatically feed them from your silo/feed bin, so if you want animals to graze, make sure and beat your sprite to the coop and barn to ring that bell.

You don't need to play with your sprites to raise their proficiency at chores--just hiring them to do the chores will give them experience.  

GATHERING WOOD AND MATERIAL STONE

When you start the game your field will be full of small stones and branches.  Use your axe and hammer to break these up and get wood and material stone.  These resources are needed to upgrade your buildings at Gott's Workshop, so having a lot of them is really necessary.  Also, while you're clearing your field, make sure to use the scythe to chop the weeds--it takes stamina, but they sometimes contain colorful grass (which is best sold right away.  It makes a terrible gift.)

As you progress and upgrade your tools at the Forge you will be able to chop bigger stumps and smash bigger rocks.  These are found on mother's hill and in the park in the center of town.  Stumps are also found near Gott's Workshop, but don't be fooled by the big stump near Gott's Workshop; it cannot be chopped.

HORSE

You can’t buy a horse in game, but you can get it for free. Meet Mugi for the first time during spring (as early as possible recommended), and he will send you a pony the next day, asking you to take care of it. Now, make sure you talk to the pony everyday, and buy a brush from Saibara at the Forge to brush it everyday. Mugi will attempt to take it away during end of year. If the affection of the pony is high, he will give it to you for free. Else, you will lose your only opportunity in getting a horse (some sources say you'll have another shot in 2 years).

LIVESTOCK

I don't think animals get sick in this game, so the motivation to take care of your chickens comes from wanting them to produce high quality eggs.  Every day you must talk to each one, collect their eggs, and let them out in the field to graze.  They will graze even if its winter or if you have no grass.  This is also true of rabbits.  For rabbits, remember to cut their fur if they look fluffy; it sells for a lot.  If you want more rabbits, buy a pregnancy kit from PoPoultry (Lilla's Farm) and apply it to the rabbit when her fur is full-grown.  Chickens do not need a pregnancy kit; you can just put an egg into the incubator in the coup and it will hatch in three days.

Cows must be talked to, brushed, and milked each day.  Buy a milker and a brush at the Forge from Saibara.  Each flavor of cow provides a different kind of milk; only the plain cow's milk can be made into butter or cheese.  Cows can be impregnated with a cow pregnancy kit from the ranch (Mugi's Farm).  Cows and sheep need grass to eat each day, so if you don't have grass planted (e.g. in the winter) make sure to buy some fodder and give it to them.

Sheep and alpacas must be talked to and brushed each day.  Every few days they will grow fluffy and need to be trimmed with the clippers (buy these at the forge).  Sheep and alpacas can be impregnated with their corresponding pregnancy kits from the ranch (Mugi's Farm).

MINING

The main reason for hitting the mine early in the game is to collect the ores you'll need to upgrade your tools.  You will need 1 piece of each ore to upgrade a tool 1 time.

To dig deep in the mines, save the game ("write in journal") at the start of each level.  Hoe the ground in various spots until you find a ladder, then reload the game.  The ladder will be in the same spot, so you can save yourself the trouble of digging around for it.  You'll want to dig down until at least level 9 or 10 to get some Mithril ores for your tool upgrades.  Be careful to watch your stamina and fatigue so you don't run out.  If you exit the mine, the ladders will all reset and you'll have to start from level 0.

In winter the Lake Mine will open up.  You can find lots of high-value gemstones there.  The first seven floors are mostly the same; on any floor ending in 8 you can find Moonstones.  If you don't want to spend a lot of real-life time working in the mines, just enter the mine, smash the rocks, exit, and enter again.  The rocks will reset and you won't have to use stamina digging around for a ladder.  In the Lake Mine you can make some good money this way, though in the regular mine there is not really enough high-value ores on floor 0 to make it worthwhile.

THE GODDESS, VAN, AND KAPPA

To summon the Harvest Goddess, throw an offering into the pool beneath the waterfall near the hot spring.  The best offerings are eggs, milk, or vegetables you've grown yourself.  It is important to befriend the Goddess early on because she gives you a power berry and unlocks Van.

Van is a traveling merchant visiting Mineral Town from the nearby Forgotten Valley.  He runs a store every Wednesday on the second floor of the Inn, and a pet shop on the 15th of every season in Rose Plaza.  If there is a festival he won't be available.

The Kappa is a magical being who lives in the lake on Mother's Hill. He will appear after you throw a Cucumber into the water. Kappa doesn't talk much, but he'll accept your offering and then return underwater. He will only accept Cucumber; the game won't allow you to throw anything else into the lake.  After about 10 cucumbers he'll give you a blue power berry, which makes you more resilient in the rain.  

FISHING

You get the fishing rod from Zach (the shipper) when you visit him at his house on the beach.  It can be upgraded as you use it enough, just like any other tool.  Remember to hold down the tool button each time you cast to "power up" the tool (just like with any other tool.)

A level 2 (copper) fishing rod should catch a little less than 1 fish per hour.  This averages to a little under $100 per hour, or about the same as mining on level 1 of the regular mines.  Foraging or chopping and selling wood and material stone will yield higher $$$ in less time.

MANUFACTURED GOODS

Once you've upgraded your coop and barn via Gott's Workshop, you will have the option to buy machines that can be used to manufacture goods.  You must comission these machines from Saibara and they are quite pricey - plus you need Adamantite, which you can get most easily at the Spring Derby.

Cheese sells for a LOT.  Butter cannot be sold but it is useful in recipes.  Mayonnaise sells for more than eggs.

HOLIDAYS

I am here to tell you that you cannot save-scrub the Spring Derby.  If you reload your game after the races, the next load will have completely different winners.  So you have to accept the risk and bet on a horse.

On White Day, if you are a boy character, give your beloved cookies.  You will probably need the kitchen to bake the cookies, so you may not be able to do this in year 1.

Most of the other festivals are pretty straight forward.

POST-MARRIAGE

Some of the annual festivals will change once you're married.

The gift-giving Valentines Day (Winter 14) and White Day (Spring 14) will have your spouse sneaking chocolates or cookies into your rucksack after you go to bed for the day. The beach fireworks show on Summer 24 will be with your spouse. Your spouse will also be waiting for you at the summit of Mother's Hill for the Autumn 13 Moonlight Night viewing. An evening dessert party takes place on the Autumn 30 Pumpkin Jamboree. The winter Starlight Night festival takes place inside of your farmhouse with your spouse. You can now celebrate your birthday and your spouse's birthday with an evening party. Walk into your farmhouse between 6:00 pm and midnight to be greeted by your spouse, who will ask if you know how important today is. If you correctly answer your spouse's question, then you will have a small dinner celebration and earn +3000 LP with them. But, if you guess incorrectly, then you will lose 2000 LP.

The first time you celebrate your birthday with your spouse, you'll receive one of the 7 rings.

Your wedding anniversary will also be celebrated, but this occurs in the morning when you wake up. Your spouse will again ask if you know what the significance of this day is, with +3000 LP for the correct answer and -2000 LP for the wrong answer. Your spouse will give you a wrapped gift containing either an Amethyst, Diamond, Pink Diamond, Ruby, or Topaz.

On your 50th wedding anniversary, your spouse will give you a BIG gift: a mountain cottage located in the meadow near the summit of Mother's Hill. You can spend the night in this vacation house. The wall calendar inside the mountain cottage contains one of the seven Truth Jewels that when combined, form the Truth Gem.

COOKING

You won’t be able to do any cooking until you’ve upgraded your house at Gotts’ Workshop, as doing so will give you a new kitchen! You’ll still need cooking equipment though, which will steadily become available for purchase from the General Store over time.

You can get new recipes from watching the entertainment channel on your TV, the best source being “Tasty Time” on Tuesdays, if it’s on. Sometimes, you’ll also get recipes from interacting with townsfolk; on a few different occasions, I was rewarded with a recipe for giving a character a birthday present. Don’t forget to check when they all are on your calendar!

Eco Lifestyle or Enviro-Living or Greenlyfe fuck you give me $40

is the very catchy and very not fake title of the most recently announced Sims 4 expansion pack. It’s a very controversial release for a million reasons, but first let me get one thing out of the way.

The Sims community can look... bad at times. More than once I’ve seen a screencap of comments on Reddit with people saying us asking for what we want in the game is “entitled”. 

No the fuck it is not. I’ve bought every pack, for every iteration of The Sims, on its release date. I have probably spent well over $1500-2000 on The Sims in the last 20 years. If they want me to buy a pack, at this point, they really need to make it worth it.

Because we’re almost at the 6 year anniversary of The Sims 4. There’s 30 expansions, and even the best gaming machines out there are already having a hell of a time running the game as is. My load time from startup to building is nearly 9 minutes. 

They have to make every single byte of data matter at this point. I remember writing a rant a year or so ago advising Maxis to do 1 or 2 more packs and then dip. 5 or 6 packs later, we get the Eco Lifestyle Expansion Pack. Not a Game Pack. Not a Stuff Pack. An entire fucking Expansion Pack, $40, about eco living.

“Well Sam, just cuz you don’t play the game or give a shit about the environment doesn’t mean other people don’t!” Good point. That’s probably why eco-friendliness has been a core part of the entire goddamn game from day 1. 

Here is a non-exhaustive list of all the eco shit already in the game: Gardening is like, the most-developed skill in the entire game by far. It’s the #1 way to get rich quick. “Off the grid” is a trait you can give to your lot, meaning you can’t use electronics on that lot. We have solar panels (in the hidden menu but still). In Island Living, you can become a “conservationalist” by cleaning up the island, literally the same point as this EP but in a city. Tiny Living includes eco-friendly bonuses on tiny lots. I’m pretty sure “Green Thumb”  and “Vegetarian” are traits you can give your Sim. Laundry Day’s ENTIRE THEME is eco-friendliness. It included a goddamn washboard and bucket and clothesline for your 1500s pilgrim Sims to get their Laura Ingels on.

Point being, we have enough eco-bullshit in the game already. That’s just the shit that I, a builder who never plays, am aware of. There’s probably a lot more I don’t even know about.

I’m begging. Stop putting out shit nobody wants. We’re running out of RAM. Give me one last good expansion pack before I take my laptop out to pasture to put it out of its misery. Unfortunately, everyone seems to really want a goddamn farming pack. (The 2 packs voted into existence by fans, Laundry Day and Nifty Knitting, are already fucking ridiculous, and I’m deeply ashamed that I’m part of a community that thinks SIMULATING CHORES is FUN. Fuck off, I want to go to the future.) Put in some futuristic, minimalist, uber-modern shit. Lord knows I don’t need another goddamn toilet or traditional counter that looks exactly the same as the other 14 traditional counters. Pretty much every conceivable interior design style has been done (if not 2 or 5 times over) except minimalist/futuristic and I don’t know why.

The only pack I don’t have right now is the magic one because I don’t play and I don’t like the items it comes with. Eco has some really nice shit, so I might buy it just for that door in the trailer. Just like how I bought First Pet Stuff because there was a COFFEE TABLE that was also AN AQUARIUM! I was astounded when 99% of people COMPLAINED about my literal favorite item in the game. Tell me you don’t want exactly that in your living room right now, you liar.

But, point being, I won’t be happy about buying this one. And unfortunately, that’s a feeling I’ve had with a lot of The Sims 4′s content.

1. Tell me about your favourite childhood pet.  Billie!!  She was a little black cat who lived with us from the time I was about 8 until I was about 31.  YEAH, REALLY.  Most cats have 9 lives.  She had 99. (Srsly...she survived 3 days in a tree, a shot in the ass with a BB gun, multiple surgeries, a brain tumor, and a really freakin’ long time)  She was a sweetheart, a scary good hunter, and Missy Dog’s BFF.  She was also a wonderful accessory for my goth phase.  I really needed someone to purr at me back then.

2. If you could learn everything there was to know about a particular topic, what would it be?  How to be a successful nonfiction writer, so I could learn everything about MORE topics! Like Mary Roach!

3. You have to tattoo one inspiring word to yourself on your body. What is it? (OMG THIS IS HARD) Human.  It would simultaneously be a reminder that I am human and deserve to be treated as such, and that I am ONLY human and deserve to screw up every now and then.

4. Do you have any hobbies?  Drawing, gardening, crochet, and farming simulators >.>

5. You get to spend the day with a celebrity/musician/artist. Who is it? Von Miller.  He’s a damn good football player and a local celebrity...but! He also started a charity to give eye exams and glasses to kids in need!  I’d pick his brain about the nonprofit sector, and figure out how I could be most helpful.

6. If you could be great at any sport, which one would it be?  Running.  I want to run the Bolder Boulder, a 10K at 5400′ with crazy hills and crazy costumes and crazy people.  I want to run in costume, take jello shots at the unofficial aid stations, and finish the race.

7. Where would your dream home be located? Tell me about it.  A few blocks north of Liz’s dad’s house.  I’d love for her to be within walking distance of both parents...but I also want to be out of his city limits, in the suburb with the better fire department, EMS, and police department.

8. In which fictional world would you like to spend a year?  Pelican Town! Stardew Valley! YAAAASS

9. Pick a superpower. Any superpower.  FLYING.  Then I wouldn’t have to be scared of heights.
