Pet Sematary(2019) The Creed family moves to a small town where just beyond the forest is a pet cemetery, and beyond that something that brings your loved ones back...but not the same.

Now, after watching Bloodlines, the remakes sequel, this was oddly a fresh breath of air, except the ending. The ending is never good. There is a creepy enough atmosphere to the movie, and sometimes I feel like if there wasn't pressuring by Paramount to please, please, please, this movie might have been very good. But then again, the original Pet Sematary never felt like a movie needing a remake. A movie in need of a remake was IT , and sometime this month I'll get into that.

Don't Look Away(2023) People start seeing a mannequin of supernatural origins, that inevitably starts killing. This movie had a very It Follows vibe to it. I should have loved this movie, albeit the artistic vibe I was getting from it. The acting was so off, the chain of events felt so...off. This movie was so strange in certain regards.

This is where my realization of third acts being movie killers for horror movies starts to feel true. To beat a supernatural power you have to call upon somebody with knowledge, read an ancient text or blah, blah, blah. This is why horror anthologies are the best. Short and sweet.

So I just saw the second trailer for Pet Semetery 2019 reboot

And holy shit it looks like they're taking an entirely different perspective on this movie/book. There's going to be some spoilers so you've been warned. Okay anyways.....

In this remake I noticed that instead of the youngest sibling dying it's the older sibling instead. I find that interesting that they'd done a switch-a-roo like that. There's also a cult for the Pet Semetery. Basically from what the trailer shows, the eldest sibling's cat dies and comes back. The eldest sibling sees the cat and goes to get it only to get slammed by a semi truck. Instead of the youngest sibling who in the movie had chased after a kite and got hit. Honestly it seems pretty creative that they're trying a different approach with the series. Hopefully it'll work out for them.

The Pet Sematary au I've been thinking about for forever but never wrote-

Mike has trouble finding a place for mr chips in derry's old per cemetery. He walks a ways back and finds another place riddled with headstones. He buries his dog there, says a few prayers and heads home. Mr chips greets him the next morning, though something is different.

The situation comes to mind again when his friend's little brother dies. He can't stand to see him so distraught, so he takes him to the same place he'd taken Mr Chips

1 - Pet Semetary 2019

Synopsis: The Creeds (Louis,Rachel, Ellie, Gage, and kitty Church) discover a mysterious graveyard in the woods behind their new home. *Spoilers ahead.

Year/Country: 2019 / US

Subgenres: zombies, middle-of-nowhere, creepy kid

Reason for watching: Pet Semetary, the 1983 novel is a book that will forever stick with me. I first read it when I was 11 or 12 and I have so many moments burned in to my mind which is fitting since Stephen King himself says that this is his novel that scared him the most. I was really looking forward to this movie last year but didn’t get a chance to watch it until now.

Highlights: I have mixed feelings about the changes from the source material, but I do like the change to Ellie instead of Gage being the kid who is brought back. Also, John Lithgow was great as the neighbor Jud Crandall. But the real VIP was the family’s Maine Coon, Winston Churchill. In this version as with the original adaptation, Church was played by an actual cat (or team of cats) and was not at all CGI. In this version, Church had a lot more screen time and the styling him resurrected was so good (full disclosure: my rabbit and one of my cats watched this with me and they did not like Church).

Lowlights: As mentioned above, there were some changes from the source material, I was not happy with but that’s the trouble with any remake - you can’t please everyone. The pacing was a bit off - it was slower than most modern movies but not quite that slow build that is common with older movies. Most of the scares were dependent of jump scares.

Rewatchabilty: Maybe. Mostly for Church.

Overall review:  Probably better than the original adaptation (I would need to rewatch it to be sure) but not as good as the book.

Who should watch it?: Fans of Stephen King. People curious about zombie cats.
