Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

Ooh. Ouch. I can tell you in advance your reaction to Bridge to Terabithia won’t be the same as mine. I didn’t read the book as a child. I went in cold, with only the trailers and the movie poster to let me guess what I might see. As such, I was disappointed. To prevent you from having the same “bad” experience as me, read this review.

12-year-old Jesse Aarons (Josh Hutcherson) is bullied at school, feels ignored at home - when he isn’t smothered with chores by his strict father (Robert Patrick) - and lonely. When Leslie Burke (AnnaSophia Robb) moves in next door, they become inseparable and begin having adventures in the imaginary kingdom of Terabithia - which can only be reached by swinging on a rope over a stream in the nearby woods.

Based on the book by Katherine Paterson, this is NOT a fantasy adventure film. It's a family drama. It’s about a desperately lonely boy whose family is poor. Bridge to Terabithia talks of the power of imagination and ultimately, loss. If we judge it on this scale, the picture fares well. Josh Hutcherson is excellent as Jesse. He’s a real person; rude and sometimes frustrating but also kind, insightful and tender. A scene where he clearly has mixed feelings about his father setting a lethal trap for a pest that’s been destroying the crops inside their greenhouse feels completely genuine. You see yourself in him. Not so much the one-dimensional characters which populate the rest of the film. There are several but I’m going to single out Zooey Deschanel as the music teacher. She’s this idyllic woman with no basis in reality. Every time we see her classes, no one is learning notes or doing exercises. Instead, the children are happily following her along as she sings a song they all recognize. Combined with some of her actions outside of school hours, it makes you wonder if the writers have ever seen a real teacher. Take another look. Would she seem so sweet and innocent if she were a man and Jesse a 12-year-old girl?

The biggest flaw with this film are the characters. Too many are generic bullies who run rampant whenever the plot needs them to. Key figures in Jesse’s life are the other extreme; angels who seem too pure for this world and leave sticky saccharine trails. I grew frustrated waiting for the magic and the fairies to come in, for the pretence that everything was imaginary to disappear. Ok, my bad. Still, the characters and the way the drama is telegraphed by their obvious arcs is noticeable even if you know what sort of movie this is.

Bridge to Terabithia has an intended audience and for them, the film is effective. Younger viewers will not recognize the flaws I saw. However, my “job” isn’t to speculate on what might’ve been. Until I get a time machine and warn myself of what I’m about to see, all I can report is my opinion/experience and it wasn’t a positive one. I hope you have a better time watching Bridge to Terabithia than I did. (February 15, 2019)

Vineri, cu patru zile înainte de alegerile prezidențiale din SUA, Statele Unite au înregistrat 100.000 de cazuri noi de Covid-19. Această cifră a înregistrat cea mai mare creștere a cazurilor de coronavirus într-o zi la nivel mondial.

În total, Statele Unite au suferit 9 milioane de cazuri de Covid-19 până vineri, sau aproape 3% din populație, cu aproape 229.000 de decese de la izbucnirea pandemiei de la începutul acestui an, potrivit unui raport Reuters, 31 octombrie, „&f2&” .

Autoritățile sanitare din SUA au confirmat vineri că 100.233 de persoane au fost testate pozitiv pentru Covid-19 în ultimele 24 de ore.

Numărul de vineri a stabilit cel mai mare record zilnic de Covid-19 din SUA pentru a cincea oară în 10 zile, depășind cel mai mare vârf zilnic de 91.248 de cazuri noi din ziua precedentă.

Raportul reprezintă, de asemenea, cel mai mare număr de victime zilnice din lume în timpul pandemiei, depășind vârful record al Indiei de 24 de ore în cazuri zilnice de 97.894 înregistrate în septembrie.

Vineri, zeci de state au raportat individual un număr record de noi cazuri zilnice.

„Cel puțin 6 milioane de americani au căzut în sărăcie și alte milioane sunt șomeri”, se arată în raport.

Raportul intermediar de 71 de pagini al personalului democrat de la Subcomisia pentru alegerile Camerei Parlamentului privind criza coronavirusului a mai spus că anchetatorii au identificat peste 60 de cazuri în care oficialii administrației Trump au respins sau au respins sfaturile oamenilor de știință de vârf pentru a promova interesele politice ale președintelui.

Let me explain to you why Mališa is the best war movie ever - or at elast better than X-men First Class.

Take every single thing you would want from a WW1-centered movie.

Non-human pov? Huge aerial takes of the city with parallels between takes where it's new and when it's destroyed? A gay-coded guy punches a politician? A pigeon shits on another politician who just said they should get rid of beggars and pests, starting with that pigeon? A running gag with a guy who is always on a different side of the conflict every time we see him? But also symbolism in who's a good person and who's not simply with who calls Mališa a dove and who calls her a pigeon? Recognizing that there are good and bad guys in all sides of a conflict by having the aforementionned switching guy be beaten up by his own comrades in arms in both sides? World War 1 but outside of the trenches, from a more civilian pov? The beforemath and the aftermath of the war on the city? Leslie Nielsen playing an american general? An otherwise entirely serbian (and croatian) cast? The DELIBERATE use of black and white since it was already time for coloured movies at the time? The widows sparing a bit of bread for Mališa, proving there's good people in this world even in the most desperate times?

Take every single other thing you would want and that I didn't mention. Do you want the assassination of the archduke to be gorily displayed onscreen? Do you want a tasteful blur on the background to be the assassination while we're focused on Mališa? Do you want the assassination to be completely skimmed over because it's only the trigger not the power barrel to the explosion of the war? WHATEVER YOU WANT FROM A WW1-CENTERED MOVIE I TELL YOU and it's true because this movie is what you want it to be.

X-Men First Class was described as follow:

It starts during WW2 (in Auschwitz) but it also has some Cuban Crisis thing with big war ships and missiles so I'm not checking in the "WW2" thing.

Mališa (which, for legal reasons, does not exist, and is a fake movie made in the style of Goncharov after a tiktok which was making fun of obscure movies by describing a fake, black and white serbian movies seen through the eyes of a pigeon) was described as follow:

The Dual Deaths of the Lady Spider

TW: death, sadness, being buried alive, implied cannibalism, acts of violence, and suicide

Leslie dies, eventually.

The sounds of violence fill her ears and Leslie grins, whipping around the corners of the ship. It’d been a while since there’d been a good mutiny, it hadn’t been 10 AM for a while now. They’d missed it.

The Lady Spider had never really had an issue with mutiny. At the end of the day, she was the captain. She led the crew, had brought them all together and still kept them tied together in her web. Mutiny kept things exciting, kept them all on their toes.

Leslie spins around at the half dozen people still actively pursuing her, smiling manically. They fire into the group, and they fire back. A bullet finds home centimeters from Leslies mechanized eye and she falls, using her last moments to flip off whoever shot her.

She wakes surrounded on all sides by hard packed earth. What the fuck. On instinct she opens her mouth to yell at the crew but it only fills her lungs with dirt. They’d cough if they were able to.

Thus begins the cycle. Die, revive, struggle, die, revive. Leslie does not know how long it takes, only that it takes long enough that the carefully crafted metals of their arms are worn down and broken by the time they punch through the surface of the dirt to pull themselves through. Leslie kneels over, coughing, pulling air back into their lungs for the first time in who knows how long. She stands shakily, thrown off balance by the lack of weight on her back.

On top of where she was buried, on top of her grave, is a tombstone.

Here lies Leslie, the Lady Spider, the Captain of the Warren Less-Than-Three. She is loved, they are missed

Leslie walks through the halls of the Warren Less-Than-Three, wearing practical shoes for once. She’d lost the spider limbs climbing out of the grave they’d dug for her. It’s a little difficult to pull a dozen limbs out from under six feet of dirt, especially when you’ve only got until you suffocate again to work with. But they’d made it out, they were here after all, even if they were down eight limbs.

“Annie?”

Click.

“Ralphie?”

Click.

“Nebul-”

Leslie stops dead in her tracks. Slumped over the counter, half decomposed, is the ships chef.

“What the fuck.” What the fuck. “What the fuck- Warren?” A distant creaking is the only response.

Leslie stumbles backwards from the kitchen, moves back into the hallway. Hearing the resounding creak of the Warren Less-Than-Three they walk through the silent halls of the ship towards the pilots room. What happened to her crew.

In the pilots room the Warren Less Than Three opens the camera feed. Creak’s been preparing this video for a while. Leslie sits down in the pilots seat, where she hasn’t had to be since they’d picked up Yoltic. Sits down, and watches.

They watch parts of Percy get brought back onto the ship, watch the crew sit him in the corner of the kitchen. The crew waits for him to come back, years pass and he never does.

Eshen is consumed by Better Odin and under any other circumstance she would have laughed, instead they curl inward and fight back tears.

Nikolophice does not escape the watchful eye of the Warren Less-Than-Three when they step out the airlock past 10 PM.

Leslie watches her crew slowly disappear from the dinner table. Watches leftovers pile up in the fridge. Watches Nebula as ze continues to cook for a crew of twelve, attempting to pretend that nothing has changed.

She watches as they pull Nicolophace’s body out of space, covered in surgical scars and metal grafts. Carmilla. They never did manage to kill her, why didn’t they mange just that.

They see their crew die, one by one, just as the mechanisms did.

Achilles is brought back beaten. Cyrus drowns themself in alcohol. Eve leaves the ship with one last goodbye.

The ship lands on Lelipad. Leslie screws her right eye shut but the left- her fucking mechanism- remains stubbornly open, fixed on the camera feed. The ship lands on Lelipad.

Leslie sees Ralphie spend decades crafting intricate tombstones, each an ideal reflection of each member who has passed away. She watches them build her own in mute horror. They’d thought she was gone.

They watch Ralphie leave the ship and never return.

Nebula does their best, for it’s credit. But theres only so much you can do as a chef on a ship made for twelve. He forgets, eventually, to keep up on maintenance. After centuries, ze simply falls.

Leslie, the Lady Spider, Captain of the Starship Warren Less-Than-Three, watches herself walk back in through the doors and sobs.

The captain goes down with the ship.

Leslie steps foot on the ship for the first time in thousands of years. They finally found her. Leslie grins, slow and venomous, and walks further into Carmilla’s ship.

She’s got one chance at this. They’re no scientist but they know that if they die now they are not coming back in anything worth talking about. Especially here. Her hand clenches around the hilt of the knife Eve made her a millennia ago. She was finally going to put the damn thing to use. No one was left to tell her it was a terrible idea to try and kill a vampire, no one was left to care if they failed.

Carmilla was waiting, as she always was, smiling condescendingly- looking down at them. Looking down at her own fucking creation. Looking down at the people she cursed with immortality.

“Lost the legs this time?”

“Fuck you.”

Carmilla smiles, leans against her hands. Leslies grip on the knife tightens again.

“You’re really trying again? We both know how that went last time.”

“What the fuck did you do to Nik.”

“Oh nothing- just had some fun.”

“They’re fucking dead.”

“They seemed to be under the impression that you were as well.”

Leslie strikes, lunges towards the doctor. Carmilla sighs, moves to block- but she’s fought this fight before. This is an old battle, started back when the doctor stuck a chunk of metal in her eye and left her in a burning building on New Texas. For the first time, her blade hits home. Carmilla looks surprised.

“Congratulations,” she says- but her voice is strained through the ever present condescending confidence and Leslie smiles.

“Thank you.” And the knife twists.

It’s easier than she’d thought to get Carmilla pinned up against one of the many lab tables, scratching at their arms- attempting to pull the blade out of her chest.

“Why did you do it?”

“Do what.” Carmilla hisses- glaring at the lady spider grinning at her.

“Make us,” Leslie says casually as she sinks the blade in another inch. Carmilla coughs, chokes around her words-

“Immortality gets lonely- I wasn’t about to die anytime soon.” The doctor is smiling, even as Leslie sinks Eve’s dagger in her heart. Leslie leans close, grins back.

“Careful what you wish for Doc.”

And she jerks the knife up.

“What do you think Warren? Time to go soon?” Leslie speaks to creak as she washes dishes from dinner time. She’s got leftovers in the fridge now, of course, which she plans on eating before she truly leaves- but she’ll ask Warren Less-Than-Three for later. They hear a creak and smile. Time to go.

Leslies truly alone now. They found the Aurora years ago, empty beyond a wooden husk and deactivated. Carmilla had been the only one left, but Leslie wasn’t exactly planning on letting her regenerate.

They dry another dish, walk out of the kitchen and into the Warren Less-Than-Three again. This isn’t the first time she’s been alone on this ship. It’s going to be her last.

The fridge is empty now.

Leslie sits in the pilot’s seat, leans back against the Warren Less-Than-Three, and smiles.

“Ready to go?”

A creak resounds through the ship. Leslie reaches forward, pulls a few levers, presses a button, and shuts down the Warren Less-Than-Three for good.

As the oxygen slowly depletes on the ship, the Lady Spider, Captain of the Warren Less-Than-Three, closes their eyes.

It’s 10 PM somewhere.

Leslie opens her eyes to glaring whiteness. They stand to their feet, look around to spot- Her crew. Leslie grins, walks towards them- pushes tears down from where they were beginning to form.

“Really didn’t think I’d end up here with the rest of you.”

Summary: I know of no Queen of England, save my mother. And I will accept no other queen, except my mother.

It was the king's thirty-fifth birthday, so a celebration was held in his honor. The whole royal family, the council, some ambassadors, and a few select nobles had been invited to attend the event.

Normally, the event would be put together by the king's wife, the Queen. But when she passed away three years ago, her daughter, Princess Elizabeth Coraline Mikaelson took over, assisted by her aunt, as well as her mother's old ladies-in-waiting, when possible.

Each guest was chosen by the women, and the event was strictly invite only, with the threat of imprisonment, and even beheading, keeping any unwanted personnel away.

But sadly, that did not mean all pests were kept out, as a result of the council's insistence for the king to begin seeking a new bride, so they could secure a male heir, Camille O'Connell had made her way onto the invite list.

She was a distant cousin of the current king of France, and with Sean O'Connell constantly pushing the matter, the council had decided to accept her as a candidate. That was the official statement the council had written down in the documents. But everybody knew the real reason.

Camille was the closest, blue-eyed, blond woman that the council would find, with the most royal blood to be crowned queen.

There were many women who were much closer to various royal families, but all of them had been rejected by the king.

So the council, in one last Hail Mary, had prayed that this woman, who shared a resemblance to the late Queen, would be enough for the King to accept.

But so far, after the initial introduction, the king hadn't glanced twice at the women.

This didn't dismay the women, who constantly tried to involve herself with the people at the party.

She tried to mimic the late Queen by trying to involve herself with the politics, but was quickly dismissed by a quick glare and hiss from her brother, to, "Join the ladies."

So with her head hung low, she picked up her skirts, and approached the women, only to be greeted with fans. Katherine's bright red lips formed into a smirk, Camille couldn't see it from the other side of the fan, but the ex-lady-in-waiting's eyes said it all.

The blond was unwanted.

"It's quite pathetic isn't it." Katherine said, snapping her fan shut onto her hand as she stared down at Camille, "I would have thought for sure the council would have taken the hint by now."

"Well they are men. What can you expect?" Bonnie Mikaelson, the wife of the youngest Mikaelson sighed, joining her sister-in-law. She glanced at Camille, "As a woman, I would have expected better of you. You should be able to take a hint, no."

The blond grew angry, "How dare you! I'm going to be the next Queen! I suggest you show me some respect!"

This outburst caught everybody's attention.

Klaus stopped talking with his brothers, his eyes narrowing at the women, he took a step towards her, only to be stopped by a manicured hand.

He turned to see his sister smiling at him. Without a word, she nodded towards her niece, who was making her way towards Camillie.

"And who dares spread such lies?" Elizabeth asked, joining the group of women, her tone low. Her expression was calm and controlled, unlike Camillie's who was beginning to huff from her outburst.

"My brother! Sean said so!" Camille answered proudly.

"That's unfortunate. Your brother must be lying to you." Elizabeth informed the women. "I know of no Queen of England, save my mother." Camille opened her mouth to try and argue, but she was stopped by the look in the princess' eyes, "And I will accept no other queen, except my mother."

This left everybody speechless.

Nobody could counter the princess' words, the only one who could, was the king, and he was remaining silent.

If the princess herself refused to acknowledge any other queen, then what could they do?

The last Queen was beloved by the people, the king himself trying to gain another, would not please the people, leaving the council with no other option then try to gain the royal family's approval.

But now, the princess had publicly refused to acknowledge any other Queen, other than her mother.

Katherine and her husband smiled, proud.

If you looked closely, you could see Lady Rebekah's eyes grow glossy, well a tear slid down Lady Bonnie's.

And the king…

Klaus' eyes were wide, as he stared at his daughter.

"Caroline…" He whispered, the name that left a sweet taste in his mouth, and a hum in his ears.

If only she could see their child now.

The older Elizabeth got, the more she reminded him of her mother.

Her hair, the same sunshine shade of mother's hair.

Her eyes, the same bright pools her mother's were.

But this…

Back straight, head held high, the strength in her eyes. The very image of a Queen, just like Caroline was.

The king walked over to his daughter, the attendants wondering what he would do, Elizabeth stared her father in the eyes, having no intention of taking back her words.

Klaus smiled, pleased to see her determination, which only reassured him that he was about to do the right thing.

He embraced his daughter, before turning to some of the most important and influential people in the nation. "Let me be clear, I have no intention of re-marrying. As your princess clearly stated, England will only have one Queen. And so long as I reign, her Queen will only ever be Caroline Elizabeth Mikaelson."

"But what about an Heir, your majesty?" Sean pleaded, trying to get the king to see reason.

Klaus smiled, and turned to his daughter, "England already has an Heir, when my time comes. Elizabeth Coraline Mikaelson will become Queen, and King."

Elizabeth nods, smiling, she agrees with her father, "The Queen's Daughter and The King's Heir."

I know this was short, it was sad/sweet/heartwarming, with multiple layers of emotions (at least that's what I thought), but it was short nonetheless. I feel kind of guilty writing short drabbles, because my disclaimers are so long, so this is the disclaimer I'm going to use for shorter fics. I know some of you may say, why don't I use this shorter version for all my fics then, well because like the disclaimer says, I'm scared of getting sued (not enough to stop writing - but enough to have a long ass disclaimer), and the long disclaimer gives me a peace of mind, because I searched up everything I needed in a fanfic disclaimer, and then created my disclaimer based off that, so I could cover all my bases.

Also, the prompt line came from "The Tudors", delivered by Marry, and I just loved it. And ofcourse, my Klaroline obsessed brain came up with this as a result. Our blacksmith’s name is Eve!! She has a mechanized left leg and a history as the leader of a rebellion. Pronouns: she/they (played by: @velcrooooo )

Anne: Anne is the quartermaster, that is until she finally manages to dethrone Leslie. Her mechanism is quite big. It is the entirety of her spine and neck, as well as part of her skull! A fun fact about her is that she has a history of being a pirate even before the pests!! Pronouns: she/her (played by: @jcbookworm )

Nebula, our chef, is up next!! They have a very interesting mechanism. It is all of their internal organs! I guess that what happens when you get pushed off an apartment balcony!! His blog is @nebulaskitchencorner Pronouns: he/they/it, really any except for she/her (played by: @stone-of-moss )

The pilot of our ship is Yoltic!! However, the ship is sentient, so we don’t really know what they do. Anyway, their mechanism is their rib cage. We love a scientist <3. Pronouns: they/them (played by @mrs-brightside00 )

Achilles, our commnications officer, has mechanized ankles. The fun part about Achilles is that because of their mechanical ankles, they can change their height!! And believe me, they do. An interesting fact about them is they have a history as a assassin!! Pronouns he/they. (played by @this-blog-is-something )

Next up is Ursa!! She’s the ship’s doctor and her mechanisms are her hands. Fun fact: Ursa learned first hand the importance of backup plans when she destroyed her planetary system’s government. Pronouns: she/they (played by @a-bi-moth (I think?))

Next up is Eshen! Now, Eshen is a special case. He says that he is not part of the crew, but he also refuses to leave. Because of this, he does not have a job. We have tried to get him to join, but he has refused. He does have a mechanism though. It is his gem heart. Edit: He has since fully signed on and taken the role of boshun!!! Their blog is @bosun-eshen !! Pronouns: he/she/they, really anything but it/itself (played by @rosie-with-knives )

Nikolophice is the “external hazards evaluator” or as they like to call it, space meteorologist. Their mechanism is their spine, and a tail. The way they joined is a funny story because they were actually trying to kill the rest of us. We adopted them instead <3. Pronouns: they/them (?) (played by @kakosophos )

Next is Cryus! They’re a deckhand, which basically means they do whatever needs to be done.Their liver is their mechanism. Yes, I know what you’re thinking and it is because of alcohol. A fun thing Cryus did is when they found out they were immortal, they immediately started a rebellion and left. Pronouns: they/them (played by @sylph8 )

Last, but certainly not least, is Kori! Our most recent member, we found Kori just....on the ship? We don’t really know where Kori came from. Well, we do. Kori escaped from Yog’soth eating the y’gdrasil system. We just don’t know how Kori ended up on our ship. K is our resident smart person! By that, i mean that k is our librarian (or archivist). Kori’s blog is @kori-archivist-gremlin Pronouns: none (use kori or k) (played by @caffienegremlin )

Finally, we have the ship creakself: Warren <3!! Yes, the <3 is part of creak’s name. Creak gained sentience through one of our friend’s (fria, but we’ll talk about her later). Pronouns: creak/creakself (not played by anyone)
