This Magic Grid Will Give You Endless Grilled Cheese Ideas
One Recipe, Endless Variations By Kristin Stangl 02/10/22
In This Article
The Bread
The Cheese
The Fat
The Add-Ins
Grilled cheese ranks high in the world of comfort food. A top-notch grilled cheese hits these essentials: ooey, gooey cheese, buttery toasted bread, and—above all—simplicity. The mark of good comfort food is, after all, an ease in preparation. A few ingredients and less than 10 minutes will yield a mighty tasty grilled cheese sandwich.
The beauty of the grilled cheese framework is that it comes with the chance to build and experiment. There is a whole, big, grilled cheese universe out there beyond those sliced white bread and American cheese slabs. Armed with this recipe and our Grilled Cheese Chooser—the basic premise of bread, cheese, fat/oil, and add-ins—you can build an endless variety of soul-satisfying grilled cheese sandwiches. 12,650, to be exact.
The Bread
Your very first grilled cheese sandwich was probably on simple white sandwich bread, not an artisanal loaf. But that shouldn’t stop you now from mixing things up as you build your way to grilled cheese glory. The bread should be sturdy enough to stand up to a few flips around a skillet and nothing too crumbly. But otherwise, the choice is yours—you may want to stand out with flavor (like a marbled rye bread would) or simply hold space for the other flavors and melting cheese to shine.
The Cheese
The lead actor in this story is certainly the cheese and there is much to consider when deciding what you want for your final product. The ooey, gooey melt of a cheese like American or the sharp bite of a cheddar? Why not both to cover all of the bases? The cheese can also go off the beaten path to roads less traveled in this context, like a goat cheese or a Brie. This element of your sandwich is where the comforting warmth comes in, so pick your dairy wisely, but know that since it is cheese and cheese is delicious, you can't really make a wrong choice here.
The Fat
In order to garner a crisp, golden brown toast to your bread, some fat is necessary. Butter or mayo can be spread directly on the outside of the bread slices before making it to the pan; while bacon fat or other oils can be warmed in the pan first before sandwich grilling kicks off. This element is essential to that crisp toasted crunch that marks a grilled cheese worth celebrating. Butter and bacon fat will add an extra hit of flavor, while other choices will simply aid in even-browning and toasting.
The Add-Ins
Grilled cheese purists can skip this step, but the inclusion of a little something extra is what sets your tasty invention apart from a just-your-average grilled cheese. These add-ins can be something that lends contour to a flavor profile—like a schmear of garlicky fresh pesto, the sharp tang of dijon mustard, or another condiment. The add-in can also be an extra element that lends crunch (hello, bacon) or spice (chipotle, pickled jalapeno, or Sriracha to name a few). Just like the cheese selection, the add-ins can be singular or a few at once. Think chipotle-bacon, cheddar grilled cheese on sourdough, or a mozzarella, tomato-pesto number on brioche.
The key elements never change, like actors in a grilled-cheese play. The bread, cheese, fat, and optional flavor add-ins are ready to guide you along a choose-your-own-adventure grilled cheese journey. The specific options laid in this matrix are really just the beginning. Now that you have the formula, the options are endless.

Egg Recipes to Start Your Morning off Right
Eggs have gotten a bad rap. It’s true they’re high in cholesterol, but everyone responds to cholesterol differently. Eggs don’t raise cholesterol for about 70 percent of us, say scientists at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. In fact, studies have found that eating eggs can raise your good cholesterol—HDL—which helps remove the bad version from your blood stream. If your doctor says you’re okay to eat eggs, you can take advantage of the high-quality protein, heart-healthy unsaturated fats, and vital nutrients these egg recipes deliver.
Here are 11 delicious egg recipes for your day:
1. Asparagus Egg Toast >
It can be pretty tough to get your recommended number of servings of veggies a day unless you have some for breakfast. Here’s a wonderful, savory treat that pits a new spin on plain old avocado toast: Just add some asparagus! One of our favorite egg recipes, this delicious dish for two combines mashed avocado, grilled asparagus spears and poached eggs, sitting on toasted whole wheat sourdough bread.

2. Cloud Eggs >
These extra fluffy baked eggs became an internet sensation because they taste out of this world. To make one of our favorite egg recipes, You simply whip up egg whites until they’re foamy (the way you would make meringue), spoon onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, scoop out the center and drop the egg yolk in. Bake at 450 degrees F for six to eight minutes and you have a high-protein breakfast like you’ve never tasted before.
Counts as: 1 PowerFuel
3. Pesto Tomato Omelet >
If you crave savory in the AM, this will be your go-to egg recipe. A Tablespoon of pesto and sundried tomatoes, plus fresh roasted cherry tomatoes, make this an egg white omelet to die for! But because it’s made of egg whites, it’s healthier for you than a whole egg omelet.
Counts as: 1 PowerFuel, 2 Extras and ½ Vegetable.
4. Sweet Potato Black Bean Omelet >
This super-easy omelet really delivers on the flavor. It also delivers on the healthy too. Black beans and egg whites add to the high-quality protein this breakfast treat delivers. Avocado supplies healthy monounsaturated fat. And sweet potatoes are a powerhouse of vitamins, including vitamin A, as well as cancer-fighting chemicals such as lycopene and other carotenoids.

6. Veggie Omelet Muffins >
If you have an on-the-go life (who doesn’t?), it’s feels like a luxury to have a delicious homemade breakfast that’s diet-friendly and health all ready to pop in the microwave. You’ll need a muffin pan and a little weekend prep time to get these veggie-stuffed egg “muffins” ready for the week. This summer Urban Village Brewing Company, a Philadelphia-based brewpub opened in Schmidt’s Commons in Northern Liberties. Founded by Landmark Americana’s Dave Goldman and Tom Revelli this one-off concept offers tank-to-table craft beers brewed on site and brick-oven fired pizzas and artisan bread specialties prepared with natural, yeast leavened dough. Inspiration for the menu items is based on a simple philosophy of pairing good fresh food with freshly brewed beer. Executive Chef Christopher Davis uses naturally leavened dough in the form of a fresh, finished pizza sourced with local ingredients and intended to be enjoyed and paired with a craft beer brewed on site in the company of great friends.
Some of their most popular beers included the Rye Bread which is a rye ipa and drinks just as you would imagine drinking rye bread would be. Flavor from hops, rye malt and caraway come together perfectly in this unique and delicious ipa. The Huntingdon Drive IPA has a blend of simcoe, citra and amarillo hops with significant late additions make this beer flavor and aroma forward without being overly bitter. The C.P.A. pale ale is being distributed to all 4 Landmark Americana locations, as well as South Philly Taproom. This popular pale ale is single hopped with citra hops. Guests have the option of 4 oz., 8 oz., 12 oz. and 16 oz. pours. Branded 32 oz. crowlers are also sold and Urban Villagers – otherwise known as the enthusiastic and helpful staff – will be happy to fill any growlers that patrons bring in for takeout.
“Our hope is for people to love it here, feel comfortable enough to come a few times a week and make it a neighborhood place. If you’re not in the neighborhood we want people to feel confident that making the journey will lead to delicious, consistent beer, food and service, 100% of the time,” said Tom Revelli.
As part of their overall mission to give the neighborhood and their customers what they want, the team at Urban Village serves brunch, lunch, dinner and provides a kids menu, as well as gluten free options. Besides beer, Urban Village has become known for their artisanal, naturally-fermented levain that very few places take the time for, but the end result is worth it in the form of the most chewy, crunchy, mouth-watering pizza crust. The crust, although delicious enough to eat plain, is adorned with a variety of toppings in ‘red’ or ‘white’.
The biggest sellers are the Rita Pizza with tomato sauce, house made mozzarella and basil; as well as the Penelope Pizza with house made pepperoni, fresh house ricotta and basil pesto. We enjoyed the Samantha Pizza with spicy fennel sausage, golden fennel, tomato sauce and ricotta salata. Urban Village’s new brunch menu naturally includes brunch-focused pizzas like the Val Pizza topped with over easy eggs, Canadian bacon, tomato and hollandaise and the Raven Pizza with scrambled eggs, green onion and house kimchi join eight of the classic red and white offerings all available during brunch hours.
For brunch they’re also making homemade everything bagels for the Salmon Lox platter with cream cheese, pickled egg, caper and onion. Cream Chip Beef, is upgraded with house made pastrami for those chilly winter days when you’re just craving comfort food. We tried the French Toast with whipped ricotta and apple preserves perfect for those looking for something sweet. Additionally, two inventive new brunch cocktails grace the menu: Bloody Mary made with fresh horseradish and aquavit and a Beermosa made from any of Urban Village’s 12 tank to tap to table beers and freshly squeezed OJ. Brunch will be served Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Not matter when you stop by, you can start off your meal with the Urban Village Fries piled high like a mountain of gluttony with braised brisket, chili relish and manchego beer cheese sauce. This dish will surely be your best friend if you wish to sample most of the beers from behind the bar. They also serve Smoked Wings which are free range chicken wings tossed with spicy buffalo or Moroccan chili sauce served with bleu cheese dressing.
New small plates include Fried Cauliflower with sundried tomatoes, golden raisins, Parmesan and mint in the small plates section. The Connie Pizza, chock full of garlic goodness, boasts little-neck clams, spicy tomato sauce and smoked pancetta. The vegan Celeste Pizza has roasted corn puree, cherry tomatoes and shishito peppers. New sandwiches include a Brick Chicken sandwich made with chicken breast, smoked bacon, garlic mayo, lettuce and tomato.
The brewery highlights gluten-free options in the form of the Shaved Salad with golden fennel, ricotta salata, garden vegetables, almonds and basil vinaigrette; Handcut Fries, Whipped Ricotta with seasonal vegetables, and vin cotto (without a side of toasted sourdough bread), and Spicy Red Mussels with house fennel sausage, capers with a roasted tomato and herb broth.
The kids’ menu at a restaurant that excels in pizza, is straightforward to please the often-picky pint-sized 10 and under crowd. Menu highlights include cheese pizza, pepperoni pizza or sausage pizza, also available is a grilled cheese served with fries or fresh fruit. Kid drinks including Boylan’s craft bottled soda, milk, chocolate milk and juice.
Bar hours of operation are every day 11:00 am to 2:00 am. The kitchen will be open Sunday through Wednesday, 11:00 am to 12:00 am and Thursday through Saturday, 11:00 am to 1:00 am.

McDonald’s dares diners to eat its crab sandwich
Image: mcdonalds
McDonald’s is betting on the strength of its customers’ stomachs.
The burger giant said Thursday that it is now serving a crab sandwich at four San Jose, California, locations as part of a test run.
The new menu item consists of snow crab meat mixed with diced celery and mayo and served with lettuce and tomato on a toasted sourdough bun.

The fast food chain said it tapped former Top Chef contestant Ryan Scott to help make it.
The move was spurred by the success of the chain’s regionally exclusive Gilroy Garlic Fries, which were sold out in Bay Area stores last May.
If the crab sandwich proves to be a similar hit, the chain plans to roll it out at 250 locations across the region.
McDonald’s has been encouraging locations countrywide to experiment with more dishes beloved by locals. Milwaukee stores have served bratwurst, many in Southern California have added a Pesto Mozzarella Melt and parts of Texas and Ohio have tested a bigger version of the Big Mac called the “Grand Mac.”
You can get Snow Crab at McDonald’s now? This horrifies slash excites me beyond what I’ll ever be able to describe in words. @McDonalds

While a crab sandwich may seem like an unusual choice for a chain best known for cheap, greasy food, it’s not the first time McDonald’s has ventured into seafood beyond its filet-o-fish. Select locations in the northeastern United States have served lobster rolls throughout each of the past two summers, and deep-fried “McShrimp” and shrimp burgers are available in certain countries.
McDonald’s has also been pushing into more gourmet offerings lately as it faces competition from “fast casual” restaurants like Chipotle and Panera.
