PESTECH - the beginning

PESTECH CEO Paul Lim Pay Chuan IS A MAN OF AMBITION. He is 45 years old, and have been leading the company for the past 8 years. Before PESTECH, he was with Toshiba Transmission & Distribution Systems Asia Sdn Bhd for 5 years. It is those years in these mutinationals, he picked up the contacts and skills to manage complex projects. He could have climbed the corporate ladder and joined its leadership position someday, but when his uncle PESTECH chairman Lim Ah Hock came calling in 2000, he joined as a general manager. PESTECH at the time was a successful SME, slowly building a name for itself as a local subcontractor for electrical jobs. His uncle is a capable business man, but being 47 at the time, he needed new blood to bring PESTECH to the next level. For Paul Lim, this presented an opportunity. In Toshiba, he could be a managing director and command the respect of the local subsidiary and life will be very comfortable as a corporate manager. But it is an MNC with many capable leaders, each vying for the few leadership position. He could make a go for it, but he could join PESTECH and turn it into international champion someday rivalling these MNC it their own turf. The rest as they say, is history. PESTECH was listed in the ACE market in 2012. In the first day, it closed at a 9% discount to its issue price of RM1. Subsequently, the stock has grown from RM 0.91 to the eventual high of RM 7.08 in 2016 before, a bonus cum right issue in 2016, that brought it down to the RM 1.4 level. By simple calculation, investor that have bought on the IPO day will have obtained return exceeding 700%.

PESTECH has set itself the ambition of participating in the high value project works for the  electrical power infrastructure in ASEAN. It is reported that Southeast Asian countries will invest USD13.6 billion in the smart grid infrastructure between 2014 and 2024. This would include smart metering and the modernization of electricity transmission and distribution networks. By 2024, the largest markets will be Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam, according to a new study published by Northeast Group, LLC. Its annual report has captured the goal fairly well. This is a company with clear objectives, having leadership that is well tuned for bidding in high value contractor projects. It has slowly built up its portfolio over the past years. It has benefited from the energy corridor in Sarawak, having won and delivered projects in Murun and Samalaju, Sarawak. It subsequently participated in projects of higher value in TNB to install and commission new governor system upgrading at SJ Tenom Pangi, Sabah. Management spoke of gaining the experience in power plant control and automation, indicating a strategy to cultivate experience required to climb the value chain. It has also been sending its project team to participate in road shows, to project capabilities and build more networks as it embark on its oversea expansion. Having dabbling in electrical substation, it also intend to go into rail electrification engineering by establishng home-bred local team in this area. This division could see itself benefiting from the MRT 2 project in Klang Valley. As Malaysia has now started to invite bidding for the KL-Singapore High Speed Rail project, PESTECH could eventually find itself adding another mega projects under it portfolio of projects. Longer term, this could pave the way for it to participate in the One Belt One Road project,  helping to build rail roads across ASEAN to eventually connecting it to the China rail networks.

Risk

This is a growth story that hopefully will pan out. For investor keen to build exposure of electricafication in ASEAN and the One Belt One Road strategy, PESTECH could be an interesting company to watch. It has since been under radar of the high performing fund house such as Kenanga Growth Fund. If it continue its run since the IPO, investor could see itself reaping the benefit of a multi bagger. The risk of course, is that as PESTECH bid for overseas project, payment might not be as easy as it is only doing projects locally. It could continue to grow as long as bank is willing to support its high receivable. PESTECH itself has been careful. In the recent project, management cited that the project Kazakstan is funded by World Bank, assuring investors payment should not be an issue as long as project completes on schedule. Will PESTECH be able to fulfill its destine of becoming a ASEAN based power infrastructure conglomerate,  or will it capipulate as and if it stumbled on one of its oversea venture? Only time will tell.
