Explore More About Ceremonial Cacao, Hot Cocoa, and Drinking Chocolate
Drinking chocolate and hot cocoa differ not only in price but also in component quality and concentration. The two products share a fundamental component — cacao — but are prepared and mixed differently. Hot cocoa is frequently bland and sugary, but drinking chocolate has a rich and nuanced flavor that can be sweetened or left unsweetened.
What Exactly Is Hot Cocoa?
The cacao comes from Peru. Hot cocoa is a beverage and drink combination that dates back to the nineteenth century. Previously, hot chocolate was a nobility-only beverage made from coarsely crushed cacao beans and sugar. A Dutch scientist built the first cocoa butter pressed in the early 1800s, a contraption that removed around half the fat from cacao beans.
This left behind low-fat cacao cakes that could be ground into a chocolate powder. Cocoa butter quickly found a market in cosmetic products industries, making cocoa powder less valued but abundant.
Cacao processors combined cocoa powder and sugar to create a therapeutic drink. While sugar dissolved easily in liquids, consumers discovered that the new powdered chocolate sank.
Soon after, those Dutch chemists found a method for alkalinizing cocoa powder, which made it simpler to dissolve in water. This method is now known as "ditching," and it is used by huge hot chocolate makers.
What Is Chocolate Drinking?
Drinking chocolate is often a cup of pure chocolate thinned out with hot water or milk with hot cocoa mixed to flavor the beverage. Cacao premium drinking chocolate is found in dark and milk chocolate variants, making it easy to find a healthy alternative.
Before the development of contemporary chocolate, there was no technology to refine chocolate to create the smooth product of bean-to-bar chocolate that we know today, hence the majority of chocolate drinks were gritty. In that regard, drinking chocolate now is more decadent and nutritious than hot cocoa, which is an older beverage.
Drinking chocolate is a richer beverage than hot cocoa. Cacao Premium Drinking Chocolate is the ideal indulgence at any time of day or night.
What Exactly Is Ceremonial Cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is a variation of the popular drinking chocolate items we sell. Ceremonial-grade cacao is untempered chocolate prepared from pure cacao bean paste that is all-natural, unadulterated, and 100 percent pure.
Although it may not look or taste like your favorite chocolate bar, it has several health advantages and is being adopted as a new morning routine by many, frequently as a substitute for coffee.
Whether you like it or not, the word "ceremonial cacao" has captivated the public's attention. While ceremonial cacao may signify different things to different individuals, cacao is used in this context as a ritual that may boost mood and serve as a conduit for opening the heart.

SOUTH AMERICA ISRAELITES
AFRO-GUYANA
Afro-Guyanese people are inhabitants of Guyana who are of Sub-Saharan African descent, generally descended from slaves brought to the Guianas to work on sugar plantations. In 1621 the Dutch West India Company acquired a charter to colonize and monopolize trade in the Americas and in Africa where they established a chain of slave trading and collection forts along the western African coast to supply slave labor for the Americas. The first of many hundreds of shiploads of enslaved Africans began arriving in Guyana in 1640 to work on the Dutch slave labor plantations. Slave labor was used to build the remarkable system of large drainage canals, dikes and sluices that form a protective barrier between the Atlantic Ocean and the low-lying coastline where most of the population still lives. One of the largest segments of Guyana's population are the descendants of those freed slaves who stayed in the colony after 1833. They make up about three-tenths of the population. Guyana is the only English-speaking country of South America, it was also never a Spanish or Portuguese colony, but instead Dutch and then British. Emancipation Day in Guyana comes every August 1st and commemorates the abolition of slavery in Guyana in 1834. Guyana shares Emancipation Day with other Caribbean nations that were formerly British colonies. There is currently a Hebrew culture center in Guyana called ‘The Prophetic Priesthood at Jerusalem,’ that keeps the laws of The Highest. Also, the territory now known as Guyana was first inhabited by indigenous groups such as the Carib (Galibi or Kalinago), Arawak (Taino), Warrau, Wayana and Akawai. Before the captive’s slaves were brought to Guyana.
AFRO-BRAZILIAN
From the late 1500s to the 1860s, Brazil was consistently the largest destination for African slaves in the Americas. In that period, approximately 4 million enslaved Africans were imported to Brazil. Thousands of African slaves were brought to work in the gold mines. They were landed in Rio de Janeiro and sent to other regions. By the late 18th century, Rio de Janeiro was an "African city": most of its inhabitants were slaves. No other place in the world had as many slaves since the end of the Roman Empire. In 1808 the Portuguese Royal Family, fleeing from Napoleon, took charge in Rio de Janeiro. Some 15,000 Portuguese nobles moved to Brazil. The region changed a lot, becoming more European. The coast, in the past the place where millions of African slaves arrived (mostly from modern-day Angola, Ghana, Nigeria and Benin) to work in sugar-cane plantations, is where nowadays there is a predominance of Mulattoes, those of African and European ancestry. However, Salvador, Bahia is considered the largest African city outside of Africa, with over 80% of its inhabitants being African-Brazilians. It has been estimated by Darcy Ribeiro, a Brazilian anthropologist, author and politician that,12 million Africans were captured to be brought to Brazil, even though the majority of them died before becoming slaves in the country, only 45% of the Africans captured in Africa, to become slaves in Brazil, survived. Brazilian slavery included a diverse range of labor roles. For example, gold mining in Brazil began to grow around 1690 in interior regions of Brazil, such as modern-day region of Minas Gerais. Slaves in Brazil also worked on sugar plantations, such as those found in the first capital of Brazil—Salvador, Bahia. Other products of slave labor in Brazil during that era in Brazilian history included tobacco, textiles, and cachaça, which were often vital items traded in exchange for slaves on the African continent.
AFRO-URUGUAYANS
The majority of 190,000 Afro-Uruguayans are in Montevideo. The port of Buenos Aires served as the exclusive entry point for enslaved Africans in the RĂo de la Plata region. Slaves entering the port of Buenos Aires were then regularly shipped inland to CĂłrdoba and the northwestern provinces of Salta and TucumĂĄn in Argentina, across the Andes Mountains to Chile (see Afro-Chileans) and to the mines of PotosĂ in Alto PerĂş. Most African slaves worked as domestic servants or day laborers. Slavery was abolished gradually between 1842 and 1852. Economically they remain among the poorest sectors of Uruguayan society: most are non-qualified workers employed in the construction industry, domestic service, or cleaning and porter services. There is high unemployment among young Afro-Uruguayans. English is spoken in this country, but mostly for business, and then 99% of the population of Uruguay speaks Spanish.
AFRO-PERUVIANS
The first slaves arrived with the conquistadors (Spaniards) in 1521. In 1529 and 1537, Francisco Pizarro was granted permits to import 363 slaves to colonial Peru. The "New laws" of 1548 and the influence of the denunciation of the abuses against Native Americans by Friar Bartolomé de las Casas, slaves gradually replaced natives at the Encomienda’s. Over the course of the slave trade, approximately 95,000 slaves were brought into Peru, with the last group arriving in 1850.
Slave owners in Peru developed preferences to have slaves from specific areas of Africa (believed to have certain characteristics); they wanted to have slaves of one area who could communicate with each other. They believed slaves from Guinea, from the Senegal River down to the Slave Coast, were easier to manage and had marketable skills. They already knew how to plant and cultivate rice, train horses, and herd cattle on horseback. The slave owners also preferred slaves from the area stretching from Nigeria to eastern Ghana. The slave owners' third choice was for slaves from Congo, Mantenga, Cambado, Misanga, Mozambique, Madagascar, Terranova (who were probably bought in Porto-Novo, Benin), Mina and Angola. Two types of black slaves were forced to travel to Peru. Those born in Africa were commonly referred to as negros bozales ("untamed blacks"), which was also used in a derogatory sense. These slaves were shipped from west or southwest Africa or transported from the Spanish Indies or other Spanish colonies. Afro-Peruvians previously acculturated to Spanish culture and the ones who spoke Spanish were called negros ladinos (Latinized Negros) “Ladino” was a racist term used in the Iberia Peninsula. The Iberian Peninsula is Portugal and Spain, sound familiar? Well, if it does that’s because that is where black Jews (Yahudim) were expelled from and taking to the west coast of Africa only to be brought to the Americas and the Islands of the sea. Which would mean the slaves that were taking to Peru are descendants of these slaves, which would mean, they are the TRUE Jew/Yahudim.
In 1835, President Felipe Santiago Salaverry signed a decree again legalizing the deportation of slaves through the other Latin American countries. Thus, two years after his death, will be removed from the constitution the principle of "emancipating soil" according to which a slave entering Peru is, de facto, made free. In 1854, General JosĂŠ de San MartĂn outlaws slave trade in Peru. In 1856, President RamĂłn Castilla y Marquezado declared slavery abolished. Afro-Peruvian music has its roots in the communities of black slaves brought to work in the mines along the Peruvian coast. Today, Afro-Peruvians (also known as Afro descent Peruvians) reside mainly on the central and south coast, with the majority of the population in the provinces of Lima, Callao, Nazca, Chincha, Ica and CaĂąete. Many Afro-Peruvians live on the northern coast in Lambayeque and Piura. The greatest concentration of Afro-Peruvians and mestizos of Afro descent is in the Callao, an area that has historically received many of the Afro-Peruvians from the north and southern coast.
AFRO-ECUADORIAN
Slave ships first arrived in Ecuadorian ports in 1526, and slaves worked on plantations and in gold mines. Afro-Ecuadorians make up most of the balance of the percentage and include mulattos (mixed European and sub-Saharan African) and zambos (mixed indigenous and sub-Saharan African). Afro-Ecuadorians are an ethnic group in Ecuador who are descendants of black African slaves brought by the Spanish during their conquest of Ecuador from the Incas. They make up from 3% to 5% of Ecuador's population. The Afro-Ecuadorian culture is found primarily in the country's northwest coastal region. Africans form a majority (70%) in the province of Esmeraldas and also have an important concentration in the Valle del Chota in the Imbabura Province. They can be also found in important numbers in Quito and Guayaquil. Today, Afro-Ecuadorians have the highest unemployment level and are among the poorest of Ecuadorian social groups. Also, there is evidence that this group still faces regional inequalities and racial discrimination, particularly in urban areas.
AFRO-CHILEANS Afro-Chileans are descended from the Sub-Saharan part of Africa, who were brought to the New World by religious orders and Spaniards. Slavery bloomed from 1580 to 1660, the import of slaves into Chile was a response to a long-term population decline among indigenous peoples. Black slaves were often used as housekeepers, agriculture, gold mining, and construction projects. Mortality was high, due to harsh working environment. and other posts of confidence. It is believed some of them might have come from Peru from the Antilles or towns in Africa, specifically from the Bantu regions some also were considered as descendants of Enslaved Africans brought from Africa to Present day Peru, Cuba, Brazil, then later brought to Chile. Afro-Chileans are mainly located in Arica y Parinacota in northern Chile. They are not recognized by Chilean government as an ethnic group.

Best Peruvian food
Tumblr media
Meals:
Ceviche - a meal made of fresh fish/sea food, there’s many types of ceviches all around South America and it’s one of the best food I tried there. I really recommend eating ceviche for lunch at local markets, but it’s also a common starter in restaurants
Lomo saltado - a meal made of beef (or pork), rice, some vegetables like tomatoes and pepper and some herbs
Cuy - guinea pig, a traditional dish from the andes, I personally did not want to try it but if you like meat it’s a good traditional food to try
Alpaca - another traditional meal I did not try is the alpaca. A lot of restaurants propose this meal in Cusco. (Whatever you think about eating alpacas, please know that this is a traditional meal for a lot of communities in the Andes and that it helped them survive during generations because it’s a type of food easily available for them, so please don’t judge these communities, you are not better than them because you wouldn’t eat this “cute animal”)
Pollada - a traditional meal made with chicken accompanied by stuff such as potatoes, rice, vegetables... In Peru it’s very popular to have a pollada to raise some money (basically people pay you to eat the pollada so that you can earn money). I ate one in the slums I was volunteering in so that a mother could buy orthopedic shoes for her disabled son
Papa a la huancahina - sliced potatoes drown in a delicious sauce, it’s one of my favorite meals from Peru :)
Anticucho - stew meat that you can eat on the street or at restaurants, it’s quite cheap and can be eaten with a lot of different spices/sauces
Corn soup and quinua soup - a popular dish from the andes. People make soup with produce from their fields, such as corn, quinua, potatoes... If you do a homestay, for example at Lake Titicaca, you will eat of lot of these :)
Trucha (del lago) - at Lake Titicaca, you will also have the opportunity to try some fresh trout from the Lake
Arroz chaufa - fried rice, a meal that mixes traditional Peruvian and Chinese food and was created by Chinese immigrants in Peru
Aji de Gallina - a chicken dish with a spicy yellow sauce
Tumblr media
Street food:
Choclo con queso - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had this for lunch. It’s pretty cheap, you can find it anywhere, it’s actually quite good and it’s the perfect backpacker lunch for when you don’t want to go to a restaurant
Leche de tigre - this dish is almost like ceviche, it’s basically a seafood soup, made with sea food, lemon juice, onion...
Pan con queso, pan con huevo, pan con palta - this is the perfect breakfast for when your hostel doesn’t have one. You can find this anywhere (which includes any bus station, good to know when you’re going on a day trip and want to buy some breakfast) and it’s super cheap, generally 1 sol
Picarones - fried sweet potatoes donuts, they’re delicious :)
Papa rellena - potato filled with beef and various ingredients such as onions, tomatoes, olives, garlic...
Queso helado - a traditional ice-cream with cinnamon on top, from the region of Arequipa, I tried it for dessert for my birthday and it was really good  :)
Tumblr media
Drinks:
Chicha morada -  a very popular drink made with pineapple and purple corn. It is actually quite easy to make, almost like tea :)
Inka cola - basically Peru’s Coca-Cola, it is very sweet and almost tastes like medecine but if you like sugar and sodas then you should definitely give it a try if you come to Peru !
Coca tea - you’ll definitely have it if you plan on hiking the many Peruvian mountains. It’s perfect to avoid altitude sickness and to give you a good boost in the morning or after your hike
Muña tea - another traditional tea from the andes, I personally did not really like it but it’s good for your health and very natural. You can have it for breakfast in most hostels and homestays
Tumblr media
Fruits:
On the local markets you will be able to find a lot of fruits and vegetables known in Europe and North America for a very low price such as: bananas, tomatoes, cucumber, pineapple, blueberries, strawberries, mangoes... Avocado is a little bit more expensive but still really cheap compared to Europe. It’s quite easy to stay healthy and to be a vegetarian here in Peru :)
But I also found a lot of exotic fruits I didn’t know existed, a few examples:
Granadilla - an orange fruit of which you eat the seeds, it’s a bit like passion fruit
Mamey - it’s a bigger fruit that you can share between a few people, I really liked it :)
I love Peru and its food so I wanted to share it with you guys :) Peruvian food is really diverse, there’s different cuisines depending on the regions and also a strong influence of foreigners who opened restaurants in Peru. If you come to Peru, try as much food as you can, you won’t regret it! I’m not Peruvian so I hope I didn’t make any mistake (I did my research^^) but if I did please tell me so I can correct it! And if there’s some good Peruvian dishes I did not talk about, feel free to add them in the comments :)

Are Sweet Potatoes Good for You? Everything You Need to Know
Sweet potatoes are a favorite fall food. But are sweet potatoes good for you and should you be eating them year-round? Here’s what you need to know about sweet potato nutrition, sweet potato health benefits, and more.
When I was a kid growing up in British Columbia, my kale and turnip-loving parents didn’t feed us processed sugar of any kind.
But once in a while, on a special occasion, we’d have sweet potatoes. When they were baking in the oven, our tiny cabin would fill with warmth (which was its own special treat, especially in the Canadian winter!) and the exquisite smell of sweet-potatoey goodness.
Clearly, I’m extremely fond of sweet potatoes. So when I decided to write an article about them, I had to check all my happy memories at the keyboard and look at the evidence.
Are sweet potatoes good for you? Are there any sweet potato health benefits? Where do they come from?
How can we prepare them, aside from in holiday casseroles and pies? And most confusing of all (to almost everyone), what’s the difference between sweet potatoes and yams?
Meet the Sweet Potato
iStock.com/smartstock
Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are large, starchy, sweet-tasting vegetables. They actually belong to the morning glory family.
Despite the shared name, sweet potatoes are only distantly related to the potatoes used to make French fries or potato chips. Non-sweet potatoes (including red, white, and Yukon gold varieties) are part of the edible nightshade family. Other members include tomatoes, tomatillos, eggplants, peppers, pimentos, and Goji berries.
Sweet potatoes are root tubers. Other root tubers include beets, carrots, parsnips, celeriac, and turnips. Root tubers store water and energy, like starch and other carbohydrates, underground. They draw upon these resources to feed the aboveground parts of the plant.
The Origin of the Sweet Potato
Sweet potatoes are some of the oldest foods known to humanity.
They are native to Central and South America. We have fossil evidence that sweet potatoes were growing in the Americas 35 million years ago. But very recently, scientists discovered 57-million-year-old leaf fossils in India that appear to be ancient morning glory leaves. This could beat the American claim as the point of origin of the sweet potato family by about 22 million years.
Wherever and whenever they originated, and however they have traveled the globe, I’m incredibly thankful that most of us have sweet potatoes in our lives today.
What’s the Difference Between a Sweet Potato and a Yam?
People often mistakenly refer to sweet potatoes as “yams.” But these two plants aren’t actually related at all.
Yams are related to grasses and lilies and native to Africa and Asia. They’re usually cylindrical with black or brown, rough, bark-like skin, and white, purple, or red flesh. Sweet potatoes have characteristic tapered ends with smoother skin.
You can find sweet potatoes at just about any grocery store. However, in North America and Europe, you will only find true yams stocked at international and specialty markets.
You might be thinking, “but I see yams at my grocery store all the time” — and you’d be right that they’re labeled that way. But this label is deceiving.
There are actually two types of sweet potatoes in most mainstream produce sections: firm and soft. Grocers needed a way to differentiate between the two types. The soft kind, which includes the Garnet and Jewel varieties, resemble yams. This is how they picked up the false name.
How Many Sweet Potato Varieties Exist?
iStock.com/xuanhuongho
While most supermarkets carry one or two different types of sweet potatoes, about 25 varieties are available in the United States. And I was amazed to discover that this represents only a tiny fraction of the total diversity of sweet potatoes.
The sweet potato geeks of the world may be fascinated to know that the International Potato Center in Peru maintains a gene bank consisting of over 6,500 varieties of sweet potato. I don’t know about you, but personally, I wish I could try them all!
Sweet potato varieties range in color from dark red to brown to purple to orange-yellow to white. They also have different tastes, sizes, shapes, and textures.
Here are Just a Few of the Most Popular Types of Sweet Potatoes:
Garnet, Jewel, and Beauregard sweet potatoes have reddish-orange skin and deep orange flesh. These are often the ones masquerading as yams at mainstream grocery stores. Who knew sweet potatoes could be so sneaky?
White sweet potatoes are crumbly, with white flesh and golden brown skin. They don’t contain as many antioxidants as orange varieties.
Okinawan sweet potatoes are also known as purple sweet potatoes because of their high anthocyanin content. Anthocyanins are the pigments that give red, blue, and violet plant foods their beautiful colors. Anthocyanins are also what give Okinawan potatoes 150% more antioxidant power than blueberries.
Despite their name, Okinawan potatoes are actually native to the Americas. They were brought over to Japan sometime in the 16th century, where they grow well and have become a staple in Japanese dishes. In North America, you will most likely find true purple sweet potatoes in an Asian supermarket.
Japanese or Satsumaimo sweet potatoes are known for being sweeter than most other types. This is especially true when they start caramelizing in the oven.
Sweet potatoes are very hardy vegetables. They’re able to grow at many altitudes, in many climates, and under compromised soil conditions. Even if you don’t have the greenest of thumbs, sweet potatoes are pretty forgiving with just a little TLC.
What Makes a Sweet Potato Sweet?
iStock.com/HausOnThePrairie
Have you ever smelled a sweet potato caramelize in the oven or used them to make a pie or a cake?
If so, you know that even though they aren’t related to what we think of as potatoes, at least the “sweet” part of their name is entirely appropriate.
When you heat sweet potatoes, an enzyme starts breaking down their starch into a sugar called maltose. Maltose isn’t as sweet as table sugar. But it’s enough to satisfy a sweet tooth that hasn’t been entirely overwhelmed by M&M’s and Hershey’s Kisses.
You can control the sweetness of sweet potatoes somewhat by how you cook them. Cooking sweet potatoes quickly (for instance, by steaming them or cutting them into smaller pieces before roasting) can reduce their ultimate sweetness.
On the other hand, cooking sweet potatoes slowly on low heat will allow that maltose-making enzyme more time to convert the starch into sugar — giving you sweeter sweet potatoes.
Looking for even more control over the sweetness? The sweet potato enzyme is activated once they reach around 135°F and stops working at around 170°F. (That’s 57° to 77°C). So the more time they spend in that range, the sweeter they’ll be.
Are Sweet Potatoes Good for You?
iStock.com/piyaset
The people of Okinawa, Japan have traditionally enjoyed one of the highest life expectancies in the world. I discovered this when my dad was researching his book Healthy at 100: The Scientifically Proven Secrets of the World’s Healthiest and Longest-Lived Peoples.
One of those secrets, it turns out, is lots and lots of sweet potatoes. The traditional Okinawan diet consists of minimal meat, dairy, eggs, and processed foods. Instead, they eat mostly whole plant foods. And they get a remarkable 60% of their calories from sweet potatoes alone.
It’s partly because of this high-fiber and antioxidant-rich dietary pattern that Okinawans enjoy such a long lifespan. Living to be one hundred years or older is not uncommon in Okinawa. Okinawans also experience less chronic disease than Americans do — with significantly fewer deaths from heart disease and cancers of the colon, breast, and prostate.
Traditional Papua New Guinea Highlanders have also been known to eat a lot of sweet potatoes. In fact, tubers like sweet potatoes and yams provide 90% of their calories!
They don’t eat much, if any, meat either. How has a sweet potato-based diet affected their health?
A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 1994 found that, when these native groups still followed this traditional way of eating, they enjoyed lower blood pressure and weight than Westerners. And they almost never experienced heart disease, strokes, or other modern chronic diseases.
So are sweet potatoes good for you? Yes, they are!
What makes them so good for you?
Sweet Potato Nutrition
Sweet potatoes are high in fiber, vitamin C, potassium, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), niacin (vitamin B3), vitamin B6, manganese, magnesium, and copper.
They get their orange color from beta-carotene, which is a pigment and antioxidant. Sweet potatoes also contain a modest but helpful amount of protein — around four grams per cup when cooked.
When compared to white potatoes, sweet potatoes offer more vitamins and antioxidants. Surprisingly, considering their sweeter taste, they also have a mildly lower glycemic index score. This makes them slower to digest.
But the greatest sweet potato nutritional glory of all may be its rich supply of vitamin A. A single sweet potato offers over double the daily value for vitamin A.
Sweet Potatoes Are Remarkably High in Vitamin A
Worldwide, vitamin A deficiency is the leading cause of preventable blindness in children. An estimated 250,000 to 500,000 children become blind every year due to a lack of this critical nutrient. Half of these children die within a year of losing their sight.
Hoping to solve this problem (and with perhaps a few other less noble motives in the mix), over the last several decades, biotechnology companies, governments, foundations, and scientists have spent hundreds of millions of dollars attempting to develop and popularize “golden rice.”
This is a form of rice that’s been genetically engineered to provide beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A). Despite decades of effort, the product still hasn’t reached the market.
How ironic that this same effort could have gotten sweet potatoes and the means to grow them into the hands of most of the impoverished families now suffering from vitamin A deficiency. Of course, that wouldn’t have made biotech company, Syngenta, any money. But it would have helped a whole lot more people than golden rice ever has, and most likely, ever will.
News flash: The biotech industry and its supporters have long promoted GMO golden rice as an urgently needed solution to vitamin A deficiency. But in late 2018, in a surprising twist, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) concluded its consultation process on golden rice by informing the current developers, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), that golden rice does not meet the nutritional requirements to make a health claim.
In effect, the FDA was saying that GMO golden rice offers no meaningful nutritional benefits.
Which again raises the question: How much better off would people be if the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on developing golden rice had instead been used to support the growth of sweet potatoes, carrots, and other vitamin A-rich vegetables in parts of the world where vitamin A deficiencies are a problem?
10 Incredible Sweet Potato Health Benefits
The unique nutritional profile of sweet potatoes makes them powerful allies in preventing disease and supporting overall health.
Here are some health benefits of adding sweet potatoes to your diet.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #1: They Support Digestive Health
Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of fiber, especially when you eat the skin. Fiber is important for your digestive health, preventing constipation and serious diseases, such as colon cancer.
One medium sweet potato has six grams of dietary fiber. They also contain resistant starch, a type of starch that plays a role in feeding your body’s “good” bacteria.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #2: They Keep Your Heart Healthy
The high fiber content of sweet potatoes can lower LDL (bad) cholesterol levels, helping to prevent cardiovascular disease.
Sweet potatoes are also high in potassium, which works in balance with sodium in your body to maintain healthy blood pressure.
They’re also high in copper, an essential metal for making red blood cells and keeping your heart healthy. Low levels of copper have been linked to dangerously high homocysteine, blood pressure, and LDL cholesterol levels.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #3: They Help Stabilize Blood Sugar
The fiber and complex carbohydrates in sweet potatoes can help keep your blood sugar stable. And it can help you feel full longer. Sweet potato varieties also contain other substances that benefit stable blood sugar.
A 2004 study published in Diabetes Care successfully used Caiapo, an extract from white sweet potatoes, to naturally reduce and manage blood glucose in people with type 2 diabetes.
The 30 participants who were given 4 grams of Caiapo every day for 12 weeks saw a decrease in their HbA(1c) (going from 7.21 to 6.68), fasting blood glucose (143.7 vs. 128.5), and two-hour blood glucose (193.3 vs.162.8). The 31 participants who were given a placebo instead saw no such results.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #4: They Can Boost Your Immunity
Sweet potatoes are rich in antioxidants that prevent free radical damage in your body.
One cup of baked sweet potato contains 52% of your daily value for vitamin C, which is important for wound healing and tissue repair.
And the vitamin A in sweet potatoes helps your body make immune cells that stave off infections and disease and have anti-tumor effects. Purple sweet potatoes contain especially potent antioxidants.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #5: They Are Good for Your Eyes
Sweet potatoes contain several nutrients that have been linked to improved eye health and vision. Some of the most powerful are the carotenoids. They include alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin.
Beta-carotene, when taken as a supplement in isolation from the other carotenoids, can cause imbalances. But when eaten in foods, where it is always accompanied by, and in balance with, an entire suite of carotenoids, it’s been shown to have powerful anti-cancer and vision-enhancing properties.
Orange sweet potatoes (as well as other orange plants, including carrots) have particularly high concentrations of carotenoids.
It’s not just the orange sweet potatoes that are good for your vision, though. A class of anthocyanins called PSPA, derived from purple sweet potato roots, might also benefit your eyes.
A study published in Food & Nutrition Research in 2015 looked at whether PSPA could influence the health and growth of human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells.
Why does this matter? The RPE is responsible for helping your eyes absorb light. It also directs immune response when faced with a threat to eye health. The researchers found that PSPA promoted DNA synthesis and healthy RPE cell growth and survival. They concluded that PSPA could potentially find use as a supplement for maintaining healthy vision.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #6: They Fuel Your Brain
Sweet potatoes also contain compounds that help your brain function at its best, including choline and manganese.
Choline is an essential nutrient for brain growth and development, as well as the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine that sends messages between cells.
Manganese is also important for brain health. It binds to neurotransmitters and helps move electrical impulses through your body faster. You can find 43% of your daily value of manganese in one cup of baked sweet potato.
The anthocyanins unique to purple sweet potatoes may also have memory-enhancing properties.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #7: They Can Help Ease Stress and Anxiety
Sweet potatoes may help you relax. They’re high in magnesium, which has been shown to play a role in calming the brain. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to depression, mood disturbances, and headaches.
Other good sources of magnesium include avocados, legumes, tofu, nuts, seeds, and leafy greens.
(I’m dreaming right now of a loaded baked sweet potato piled high with a soft nut cheeze, avocado, a drizzle of flax oil, and a sprinkle of seasoning. It’s also accompanied by some freshly steamed and piping hot leafy greens for a delicious, magnesium-rich meal.)
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #8: They Can Help Boost Fertility
Vitamin A is an essential nutrient for healthy reproduction. And as we know, sweet potatoes are a fantastic source.
Sweet potatoes also offer a rich supply of iron, which has also been shown to be important in supporting fertility.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #9: They Can Help Fight Cancer
Sweet potatoes are a rich source of cancer-fighting antioxidants, especially in their skin. They have other anti-cancer properties, too.
Up to 80% of the protein in sweet potatoes is a type of storage protein known as sporamin. This unique protein has been studied for anti-cancer ability and found to be effective in several disease types.
Research has been promising in the use of sporamin to inhibit tongue, gallbladder, and colorectal cancers. It has also been shown capable of slowing cancer cell growth and reducing cell migration and invasion in metastatic cancers.
Sweet potato peels, particularly those of the purple varieties, may be especially powerful when it comes to cancer prevention.
A study published in Nutrition and Cancer in 2016 looked at the antioxidant and anti-cancer effects of an extract from sweet potato peels. They found promising anti-cancer activity for cancers of the breast, colon, ovary, lung, and head/neck.
Sweet Potato Health Benefit #10: They Have Anti-Inflammatory Effects
Eating sweet potatoes may also help reduce inflammation.
This is chiefly due to their high levels of beta-carotene, vitamin C, and magnesium. Their abundance of antioxidants doesn’t hurt here, either.
One of the particular antioxidants that’s found most abundantly in purple sweet potato flesh is cyanidin. Cyanidin has been linked to reducing inflammation, especially in the digestive tract.
How to Choose and Store Sweet Potatoes
Next time you shop for sweet potatoes, here are a few things to keep in mind.
When you pick one up, take a close look at its skin (no, you don’t have to pack your magnifying glass). It should all be mostly the same color without visible signs of decay or cracking.
Give it a little squeeze. You don’t want your sweet potato to be squishy anywhere, as this could indicate rotting.
When you get your sweet potatoes home, make them a nice place to rest in a basket on your countertop or pantry. You should keep them dry and cool (room temperature, not refrigerated).
Typically, you should use sweet potatoes within a few weeks of purchase.
The Best Way to Prepare Sweet Potatoes
iStock.com/vaaseenaa
Maybe you eat sweet potatoes regularly. Or maybe you only think of them as a seasonal side dish.
Me? I’ve enjoyed a baked sweet potato for breakfast with a delicious organic tofu chive spread on it. Or for lunch with salad dressing or a peanut curry sauce. Or as a base for dinner, or even dessert.
I haven’t tried a steamed sweet potato smoothie (although, come to think of it, maybe I should!). Sweet potatoes are delicious, incredibly versatile, and you can eat them in more ways than you think.
You can prepare them by boiling, steaming, baking, stir-frying, grilling, or cooking and mashing.
But the bottom line is: You just might want to cook sweet potatoes in whatever makes you most likely to eat — and enjoy them.
The only way I’d recommend not preparing sweet potatoes is by deep-frying them. This isn’t the healthiest way to cook food anyway. But for sweet potatoes, it can actually lead to the creation of acrylamide — a potential carcinogen.
If it works well with your recipe, try leaving the skin on for some potent fiber and nutrients. Sweet potato skin is also full of antioxidants. In fact, sweet potato skin may have over 10 times the antioxidant power of the flesh inside.
Including a few grams of fat in your sweet potato recipes can significantly increase the amount of beta-carotene your body absorbs from the meal. Just use a small amount of nut butter, avocado, olive oil (if you use oil), or have a fat source in the same meal.

‘High-Rise Hell’: N.Y.C. Skyscraper’s Elevator Breakdowns Strand Tenants (NYT) When it was completed in 1931, the City Bank-Farmers Trust Company Building towered over the financial district as one of the tallest buildings in New York City. The 59-story building, at 20 Exchange Place, is now a bustling residential high-rise with more than 750 apartments. Tenants breeze into the lobby, with its soaring ceilings and elaborate marble mosaics, and into Art Deco-style elevators to reach their homes. Or they used to, anyway. Since November, the skyscraper has been plagued by long elevator outages that have turned daily life upside down and trapped residents with mobility issues inside their apartments. Elevator service is unpredictable and often nonexistent, for hours at a time, above the 15th floor. The elevators that service only the lower floors have continued to work, even as the outages in the others have grown more frequent in the last two months. The sheer height of the building has made the persistent outages particularly infuriating for residents, who can pay as much as $5,000 a month for a market-rate one-bedroom unit. In interviews and emails, more than a dozen residents told The New York Times about living in what one of them described as “high-rise hell,” and about how they have reorganized their lives as a result. They have canceled plans, missed appointments, been late for work, ditched heavy strollers, contemplated moving. (But how do you move out of a high-rise without a reliable elevator?) “Our lives completely changed the moment these elevators stopped working,” said Faisal Al Mutar, 30, who lives in a studio on the 22nd floor.
Guyana’s tiny population braces for a gusher of petrodollars (Economist) It used to be a disused sawmill surrounded by fields of sugar cane. But since oil was discovered off Guyana’s coast in 2015 the 52-hectare site in Georgetown, the capital, has been transformed into the biggest logistics hub in the country. From this waterfront spot, Guyana Shore Base serves ExxonMobil, an American oil giant, and other foreign firms drilling for oil off the Caribbean coast. At two big berths along the Demerara river ships pull up to offload equipment for maintenance and pick up supplies for hundreds of workers toiling away on offshore rigs. The buzz at the shore base hints at how a rush of petrodollars could transform one of South America’s poorest countries. Autarkic policies introduced under socialist rule in the 1970s left Guyana struggling with unsustainable debts and sluggish growth. Many of the country’s 800,000 people make ends meet doing the same things their grandparents did: farming rice, chopping timber or mining gold. But since the discovery of light, sweet crude in its waters, Guyana’s fortunes have begun to turn. The country has received a surge of foreign investment and built a sovereign-wealth fund to store its share of the oil money. As a result, it was the world’s fastest-growing economy during the covid-19 pandemic. Now it stands to gain as the war in Ukraine sends oil prices soaring past $100 per barrel and countries that rely on Russian fuel scramble for alternatives. Will a sudden injection of petrodollars boost much-needed infrastructure and pull thousands out of poverty? Or will it be squandered or stolen?
Peru’s president survives 2nd impeachment effort in 8 months (AP) Pedro Castillo, Peru’s embattled president, avoided joining the South American nation’s list of impeached leaders as opposition lawmakers Monday night failed to get enough votes to remove him from office eight months into his term. Castillo, a political neophyte who shook the country when he defeated the political elite to become president, survived his second impeachment attempt. He characterized the accusations against him as speculation and argued that none could be substantiated. The lawmakers seeking to remove Castillo had noted he is the subject of three preliminary investigations into possible corruption, which under Peruvian law cannot proceed until he is out of office. There is also a separate accusation from a would-be collaborator who alleged he is part of a criminal group that receives money in exchange for public works. The lawmakers accused Castillo of “permanent moral incapacity,” a term incorporated into Peruvian constitutional laws that experts say lacks an objective definition and that Congress has used six times since 2017 to try to remove presidents.
Russia-Ukraine peace talks (NYT) Russian and Ukrainian envoys met for talks in Istanbul today as both sides put forward concessions that could be the first steps toward a draft peace agreement. Russia said it would “drastically” reduce its military activity around Kyiv and Chernihiv, in the north. Ukraine for the first time proposed negotiations on the status of Crimea, to be conducted over 15 years. To a large extent, the diplomatic concessions reflect what is already the reality on the ground: Russia’s campaign to take Kyiv has stalled, and Russian forces have even been pushed back by Ukrainian counteroffensives. The Crimean peninsula has been under de facto Russian rule since it was annexed in 2014. Russia also said it was willing to prepare a meeting between its president, Vladimir Putin, and President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. Zelensky has sought such a meeting for months. The fate of the eastern Donbas region, which Russia no longer recognizes as part of Ukraine, could be discussed during that meeting, an aide to Zelensky said. The key to a peace agreement appeared to be Ukraine’s willingness to adopt a neutral status—including by not joining NATO or hosting Western troops—in exchange for international “security guarantees.”
Europeans expel dozens of Russian envoys to combat espionage (AP) In what appeared to be a coordinated action to tackle Russian espionage, at least four European allies expelled dozens of Russian diplomats on Tuesday. The expulsions come as relations between Russia and the West have plunged into a deep freeze following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. The Netherlands said it was expelling 17 Russians who it described as intelligence officers masquerading as diplomats. Belgium said it was ejecting 21 Russians. The Czech Republic gave one Russian diplomat 72 hours to leave the country. Ireland told four senior Russian officials to leave the country because of activities deemed not “in accordance with international standards of diplomatic behaviour.” Poland last week expelled 45 Russians whom the government identified as intelligence officers using their diplomatic status as cover to operate in the country.
Turkey, Romania work to defuse mines possibly floating from Ukraine’s shores (Washington Post) Turkey and Romania have scrambled in recent days to neutralize potentially explosive mines amid concerns that the weapons may be drifting across the Black Sea from Ukraine’s shores toward neighboring countries. Defense ministries for both countries, in separate announcements Monday, said they had dispatched their naval forces to defuse mines of unknown origin that appeared near their coasts. A mine that appeared Monday was the second reported in the waters near Turkey in three days. Turkey’s government had said previously that it was in contact with both Moscow and Kyiv about the weapons, but did not specify which side, if either, was responsible for the mines. The scramble comes after Russia’s intelligence service, the FSB, claimed on March 19 that poor weather had caused more than 400 naval mines to become disconnected from the cables that were anchoring them, and warned that the mines were “drifting freely in the western part of the Black Sea,” which includes the territorial waters of Ukraine, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey.
Finding humor in Ukraine war? It’s (always) the Onion’s way. (AP) Like all effective satire, the Onion’s headline had a ring of truth: “Putin Pleased as Plot to Ruin Russian Economy, Destroy International Standing Goes Exactly to Plan.” A month after Russia invaded Ukraine, the comedy website has been willing to look for humor in the most searing of stories even as it unfolds. The satirical site has identified Russian President Vladimir Putin’s college major as “aggression,” showed a coastal resort in Ukraine “with extremely affordable rates right now” and said the United Nations is escalating its response to the invasion from “warnings” to “stern warnings.” “Finding comedy in the Ukraine situation serves several functions,” says Chad Nackers, editor in chief of The Onion. “It is a powerful tool for exposing the folly and absurdity and human cruelty as well as providing some release from a stressful state of affairs and an endless cycle of misery.” “Laughter,” he says, “can fill the hole created by a sense of hopelessness.” During the past month, the Onion ran a mock “fact check” on Ukraine. To the statement that Russia claimed Ukraine is harboring biological weapons, the Onion said “fabricating allegations about enemies holding biological weapons is America’s job.”
General Strike Throws India Into Confusion (NYT) A two-day nationwide strike called by hundreds of thousands of workers to protest government economic policies has spread to large parts of India, with supporters of the walkout blocking roads and train tracks, and public transportation absent from the streets of many towns. As Indian authorities raced to roll out contingency plans to deal with the strike, the country’s federal power ministry directed all publicly run electricity companies to be on high alert to ensure that hospitals, defense installations and railways continue to be supplied with power. The shutdown, which began early Monday, was called by dozens of labor unions representing workers from both public and private sectors. Union leaders said the protests were aimed at a variety of government policies that they said harmed workers, farmers and Indians in general. They also said they were demanding an immediate scrapping of a new labor law that allows contract work, gives employers greater leeway in setting wages and increases working hours.
Taliban hard-liners turning back the clock in Afghanistan (AP) Taliban hard-liners are turning back the clock in Afghanistan with a flurry of repressive edicts over the past days that hark to their harsh rule from the late 1990s. Girls have been banned from going to school beyond the sixth grade, women are barred from boarding planes if they travel unaccompanied by a male relative. Men and women can only visit public parks on separate days and the use of mobile telephones in universities is prohibited. It doesn’t stop there. International media broadcasts—including the Pashto and Persian BBC services, which broadcast in the two languages of Afghanistan—are off the air as of the weekend. So are foreign drama series. On Monday, members of the Taliban vice and virtue ministry stood outside government ministries, ordering male employees without traditional turbans and beards—seen as a symbol of piety—to go home. According to a senior Taliban official and Afghans familiar with the Taliban’s leadership, the push to return to the past—which resulted in the edicts—emerged from a three-day meeting last week in the southern city of Kandahar, the birthplace of the Taliban. They say the edicts stem from the demands of the Taliban’s hard-line supreme leader, Haibatullah Akhundzada, who is apparently trying to steer the country back to the late 1990s, when the Taliban had banned women from education and public spaces, and outlawed music, television and many sports.
Many in Mideast see hypocrisy in Western embrace of Ukraine (AP) Within days of the Russian invasion, Western countries invoked international law, imposed crippling sanctions, began welcoming refugees with open arms and cheered on Ukraine’s armed resistance. The response has elicited outrage across the Middle East, where many see a glaring double standard in how the West responds to international conflicts. “We have seen every means we were told could not be activated for over 70 years deployed in less than seven days,” Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki told a security forum in Turkey earlier this month. “Amazing hypocrisy,” he added. The U.S.-led war in Iraq, which began 19 years ago this month, was widely seen as an unlawful invasion of one state by another. But Iraqis who fought the Americans were branded terrorists, and refugees fleeing to the West were often turned away, treated as potential security threats. The Biden administration said Wednesday the United States has assessed that Russian forces committed war crimes in Ukraine and would work with others to prosecute offenders. But the U.S. is not a member of the International Criminal Court and staunchly opposes any international probe of its own conduct or of its ally, Israel.
