Understanding the Vital Role of a Personal Injury Lawyer
Everyone faces unforeseen situations, and unfortunately, some include personal injuries. When that happens, it becomes necessary to engage a personal injury lawyer near me. This type of attorney plays a crucial part when seeking compensation for your damages due to someone else's negligence. Here's an in-depth discussion regarding what a personal injury lawyer can do for you.
Assistance in Case Evaluation
The first thing that a personal injury lawyer provides is assistance in evaluating your case. Following an accident or injury, the individual might be overwhelmed with medical appointments and recovery efforts. In such situations, having a professional legal counsel who can objectively assess your situation regarding potential claims and courses of action is invaluable.
Helping Navigate Legal Processes
Being involved in any kind of litigation possibly means dealing with complex legal procedures and documentation. A reliable personal injury lawyer will help simplify these processes by guiding their clients through every step—filling out forms correctly, meeting deadlines—making the legal process less daunting and more manageable.
Gathering Evidence
To establish another party's fault in causing an accident or injury efficiently requires strong evidence—a process with which a local personal injury lawyer can assist greatly. They conduct thorough investigations into accidents; compile medical records related to injuries sustained; obtain expert testimonies if required serve as essential evidence backing up your claims.
Crafting Effective Legal Strategies
Not all personal injury lawsuits make it to courtrooms; they sometimes are settled outside the courtroom without any formal findings by either judges or juries—known as settlements. On other occasions, they proceed through full-fledged trials before reaching a conclusion. Skilled local personal lawyers understand how to choose suitable strategies tailored for each individually unique case based on its particular circumstances.
Representing Clients at Negotiations & Trials
In many cases involving personal injuries, insurance companies try settling claims as fast as possible. However, their initial offers might not compensate victims adequately for their damages. In this case, having an experienced personal injury attorney near you becomes beneficial. These legal professionals will represent your interests during negotiations ensuring that you receive fair compensation for your losses.
When negotiations fail, these cases often move to court, where presentation skills become vital. Again, a seasoned attorney ensures that your case is argued convincely and compellingly before the judge or jury.
Providing Emotional Support
Being victims of personal injuries often come with emotional stress stemming from physical pain, financial strain, or other related issues. A local lawyer provides emotional support; they help their clients stay balanced when going through such situations by offering much-needed reassurance during the entire process—from investigating claims to representing clients in negotiations and trials.
In conclusion Dealing with personal injuries can be a challenging experience; it is instrumental in getting knowledgeable legal counsel on your side during this difficult period. Be it case evaluation, navigating complex legal procedures, gathering evidence or crafting effective legal strategies—a proficient local personal injury attorney will effectively guide you every step of the way until you recover deserved compensation for your losses while also ensuring necessary emotional support throughout the process—making dealing with such trying circumstances just a bit easier.

Hello local lawyer BemusedlyBespectacled. How does one get a job as a lawyer specializing in suing high-profile assholes, the way Mark Bankston seems to? What field of lawyering is he?
He is a personal injury attorney! Apparently his firm's thing originally was doing product defect cases – stuff where you have, like, a car that has a defect, and as a result you're in a car crash and are horribly injured, so you sue the car manufacturer.
With personal injury attorneys, typically you only take a chunk of whatever money you win (he's described it as "I eat what I kill"). So like, if you win a million dollars for the client, you get some percentage of that million to make up for the months and/or years of work you did essentially for free.
I think with the Sandy Hook parents, he took their case pro bono, but is still recouping some lost money because of how much sanctionable shit Jones' lawyers pulled. (And that is money that goes directly to him/his firm, because he wasted time and money on, like, trial prep for a trial that was delayed by several months, or hiring a court reporter for a depo that was essentially hours of bullshit, solely because of Jones' shenanigans)
With this new case with Musk, I think he's just gotten a reputation now as a guy who is very, very good at taking down powerful media figures who defame people by making up or spreading conspiracy theories about them. No idea how he's getting paid for that one (I don't know if it's pro bono or if it's with the usual agreement), but I think it doesn't matter, given that he's almost immedaitely had to ask for sanctions from Musk's side because the guy defending that disaster of a deposition DIDN'T HAVE A TEXAS LAW LICENSE, WASN'T ADMITTED PRO HOC VICE, AND WASN'T THERE WITH A "SPONSORING" TEXAS ATTORNEY, WHICH IS WHAT YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO DO EVEN IF YOU'RE ADMITTED PRO HOC VICE.

Rubio's Coastal Grill, Citing Rising Business Costs, Abruptly Shuts Down 48 Restaurants in California
Rising business costs can really hurt restaurants like Rubio's Coastal Grill in California. When costs for ingredients, rent, and labor go up, it becomes harder for businesses to make a profit. For example, if the price of fish increases, Rubio's would have to either raise menu prices or accept lower profits. If they raise prices too much, customers might choose to eat elsewhere. High costs can also lead to cutting staff hours or even laying off workers, which affects service quality. When a business can’t keep up with expenses, it may struggle to stay open. If these challenges continue, restaurants like Rubio's might have to close their doors for good, impacting not just the owners but also the employees and the local community.

The Statute of Limitations
How long does a plaintiff have to file a civil suit after an injury occurs?
The statute of limitations on a personal injury case can last anywhere from two to six years. This depends on the type of accident and the nature of the injuries.
Most personal injury cases involve negligence. A wrongful death lawsuit is a little different, and has its own statute of limitations. A medical malpractice case is another matter altogether.
youtube
Average Duration of Personal Injury Lawsuit
Depending on the nature of the injury, the average personal injury lawsuit can last anywhere from six months to a year. This includes the discovery process, which involves the gathering of evidence about the incident. This includes the completion of depositions, and questionnaires, as well as requests for medical records.
A lawyer will also wait until the plaintiff has reached maximum medical improvement before deciding whether or not to settle the case. This could take anywhere from nine months to fifteen months, depending on the type of case.
Filing A Lawsuit
The statute of limitations is not the only thing you need to know about how long a plaintiff has to file redress after an accident. In fact, the process of filing a lawsuit can be the only means by which you can fully recover your damages for serious injuries.
A good lawyer knows when to settle a case, and the time to get a settlement is the time to act. It is also worth noting that most clients prefer to settle their claims as early as possible. This is because the longer a claim takes, the more likely it is that you will lose your case. You also want to be sure to get a lawyer who knows how to leverage your case's strengths and weaknesses.

monkie kid winged au (flightless birds au) stuff, lets go
MK was born with wings that are a size too small, he can’t fly with them
Wukong’s wings were severely damaged by the mountain, to the point where he can’t fly. (his wings are the one part of him immortality/invulnerability doesn’t heal). he normally keeps them hidden for this reason, and most people who didn’t know him pre-havoc in heaven assume he never even had wings. (he can still use his cloud sail) (MK doesn’t know about Wukong’s wings)
Macaque only has one wing. He usually uses a glamor to make it seem like he has two.
MK originally started looking up to the Monkey King because “oh hey, it’s a hero that doesn’t need wings in order to fly”
Mei has hummingbird wings. she doesn’t really need them because of the whole Dragon and Motorbike and Being Fast thing, but they’re there
...everyone elses wings are up for debate/interpretation because i honestly know jack shit about birds
Wukong’s wings alongside being unusable are in uh. not all that good condition due to how he just. basically ignores them and hides them. (he uses a glamor to keep them hidden, but he doesn’t really....like remembering how damaged his wings are, so he doesn’t take care of them.)
Red Son only finds out that MK can’t fly when he knocks the other off a building and has to save him (....this happens in Bad Weather.)
the Sign Saga
basically theres a giant billboard within the city that people keep smacking into while flying (even Wukong smacked into it while cloud sailing once) and its seemingly indestructible. the sign also happens to have a drawing of Wukong on it with the slogan “the sky is a safe place to fly”
....the reason everyone keeps smacking into the sign is because a while back MK accidentally cursed it when he was upset over not being able to fly (and at the time was in possession of a cursed object).
Red Son finds out about this after he slammed into the sign hard enough he dislocated his wing and had to go to MK for help. (....this would be before the New Years special, so before Red Son’s redemption arc. have fun with that)
Red Son: what do you mean you cursed the sign???? MK: look, it wasn’t my fault, Red Son: YOU LITERALLY JUST SAID THAT YOU CURSED IT
Red Son smacks MK on the head using his uninjured wing because “you’re dumb Noodle Boy, I can’t believe you accidentally started the Sign Curse”
Wukong also hates the sign. for multiple reasons really, including the fact he did not get permission for it to be made (his lawyer has tried suing the company that put it up multiple times) but mostly because the sign having his face on it and saying “the sky is a safe place to fly” when he himself can’t fly with his wings is.....yeah. kinda upsetting.
LBD calls MK a “flightless bird”.....
“Oh poor little flightless bird who’s eyes are blinded by the sun... you were always destined to fall.”
as said earlier, MK doesn’t know about Wukong’s wings, so when Macaque shows Wukong as having wings in Shadow Play....well MK is understandably confused.
But Monkey King doesn’t have wings!” “Doesn’t have- ha! Oh, bud, exactly how much has your so called mentor kept hidden from you?”
when LBD starts trying to turn MK to stone in the season 2 finale, she managed to get his wings. they ache and have lost some of their colour for some extent of time after.
on the ship, the others demand Wukong remove his glamors so that they can treat his injuries, and. this is how they find out about Wukong’s wings
said wings currently have some bloodied bandages wrapped around them, because whatever got the rest of him also got his wings. not to mention the fact his wings were already in horrible condition, so-
they lecture him about proper wing care
remember how Macaque only has one wing?
that wasn’t always the case
Wukong, at this point in time, thinks that he’s the one who did it, and is utterly horrified by it. this may or may not be why he won’t use the full extent of his powers
.....he’s not actually the one who did it
theres a reason Macaque knew about LBD
*(casually projects my fear of heights onto Macaque)*
i will not be elaborating on that other than the fact that when he lost his wing the fight did not occur on solid ground
in this AU when LBD possesses someone, their wings become skeletal
this isn’t necessarily canon to this AU, but if she were to possess Macaque, a ghostly see through wing would appear where his missing one is
...on a completely different note though. once everyone is on the ship some of them have to carry Macaque and Wukong around when they need to go someplace that requires flying (since, yknow, Wukong lost his ability to cloud sail)
Wukong resigns himself to it after 5 minutes but Macaque complains and struggles so much (fear of heights kicking in) that the only person who can safely carry him is Sandy
MK got a hoverboard so he doesn’t have to be carried. (Wukong wanted to use the hoverboard too but he Sucked Ass at it and none of them are taking the chance of him falling off)
Red Son and Mei both take MK for flights sometimes. why? because its fun, thats why.
and....thats about all i have for this au thus far. will make more posts when theres more hdkfjflkjslks

There are those that say that drowning is peaceful…Gordon Tracy respectfully disagrees. Gordon Tracy knows that drowning can be the most painful experience without ever being dealt a physical injury…
Thanks to @misssquidtracy and @agentfreelancer1 for laying eyes on this and giving me the confidence to post it!
----------
The abrupt turnover from the weightlessness of dreams into the full force of consciousness is a rough transition at the best of times. It is made even more jarring when a person wakes in an unfamiliar setting. It is made almost unbearable upon the realization that every breath taken in burns to the core.
It took Gordon Tracy much longer than he would like to admit to himself to piece together his situation. His vision took a moment to clear. He pulled the blanket down from around his face, using it as a way to clear the sleep from his eyes. He looked around. The room was a sterile white with curtained partitions. There was no doubt in his mind that he was in a hospital.
He tried to sit up and immediately he was struck with the notion that it wasn’t necessarily his brightest idea. The muscles in his torso screamed protest in the form of a searing ache that spread through his chest. He gasped in a breath at the sudden pain, only for that to bring its own punishment. Fire burned through his body and he dropped leadenly back onto the pillows.
Is this the end? Gordon thought to himself. The last time he had known a sensation as bad as this had been in the hydrofoil crash. He had thought that he was dying then as well. He took small sips of air as his body began to calm, the pain subsiding into a duller, more manageable ache. It gave Gordon plenty of time to reflect back on the events that led up to this. Everything was fuzzy in his mind.
He remembered a sinking ship…in the Atlantic? The North Sea? He remembered that it was cold and…the storm. Yes…there had been a storm. A big one. With violent waves. Thunderbird 4 had had trouble stabilizing in the rough seas as Gordon had worked to rescue those in the water and Virgil had worked to rescue those still on board the sinking vessel. But no matter how hard Gordon tried he couldn’t remember anything else. Everything was a blur.
He heard the echo of heels on linoleum, and for a moment Gordon realized how preternaturally quiet this wing of the hospital was. In every hospital he had ever been in, there had been the hum of nurses and the whirring and beeping of machinery, but here, there was no hum of ambient noise, just the steady footfalls of someone approaching his room.
He tried once more to sit up at the approach, slower this time. He didn’t know why he was here, but a bright smile and a bit of playful flirting couldn’t hurt his chances of getting out of this bed early on good behavior. He forced himself to lean back naturally against the back of the hospital bed.
Sensible black kitten heels were the first thing Gordon saw peeking under the curtain. Gordon frowned slightly. Neither the shoes nor what he could see of the legs that were covered only in pantyhose suggested that he was about to receive a visit from a nurse. Those were the trademarks of a lawyer or a reporter…unless…could it be?
Had Lady Penelope come to visit him in the hospital? The thought simultaneously thrilled and horrified him. He loved the thought that she worried enough to come visit him, but a part of him cringed at the thought of her seeing him like this. He wondered if he could get away with pretending to be asleep.
The curtain began to slide open. Gordon caught the flash of a sleeve in a very pale purple color. Lilac his brain supplied, though he was more preoccupied with the fact that the sleeve, its color and texture and the shine of its buttons, was somehow both altogether foreign and yet intimately familiar to him. His mind hazily cast about for memories just out of reach even as the curtain continued to open.
Lilacs…little purple flowers…a suit in a matching color…brown hair…a halo of white…white and wood…a coffin?
Gordon’s stomach dropped. Any breath inside left him in a whoosh and, for a brief moment it was as if the whole world dropped away. His eyes locked with the eyes of the woman on the other side. The corners of her mouth turned upward into a pitying smile. Gordon’s mouth ran dry and his throat suddenly felt too closed up to function. There were several moments of stunned silence before Gordon was able to make his throat work.
“Mom?” The voice that escaped him was not the voice of the charming and daring International Rescue operative he had grown into, but the soft uncertain voice of a child.
“Hello, Gordon,” she said, moving to Gordon’s bedside. She sat down and Gordon exhaled shakily. He felt her weight on the bed, could feel the warmth rolling off of her even through the thick hospital blankets.
“Mom…I…I don’t…understand,” Gordon said. His heart ached and his mind whirred too quickly to get a sentence out in its entirety. She shook her head sadly.
“You’ve grown so much…” She reached forward to push a few stray locks of sandy hair from Gordon’s face. The brush of very real and very warm fingertips against his temples had a sob ripping from Gordon’s throat. Lucille drew Gordon into her arms and held him, just as she had done all those years ago when she had still been able to.
Gordon felt the rush of emotions pouring forth as he pulled his mother against him with an iron strength. Flashes of images played across his vision, blurred through tears that fell freely as he buried his face in her neck. Memories began to overwhelm his senses. Memories of peering into tidal pools at the beach, of learning to swim in the kiddy pools, of kisses on scraped knees and of falling asleep in his mother’s lap as she read to him before bed. Memories of the excitement before the fateful trip. Memories of a broken Virgil, his young mind falling easy prey to the survivor’s guilt that haunted him into his adulthood.
Memories of lowering his mother into the ground. Of the sky weeping as she was lowered into the grave. Of a family dynamic shifted by her premature departure from the earth.
Gordon wept as he once again was able to hold his mother in his arms. She made soft, soothing shushing noises, rocking him gently as she had done when he was young. He looked up at her, taking in every feature. She was just as he remembered her. The light dusting of freckles across her cheeks. Her warm eyes that used to dance as she laughed. There were so many things he wanted to ask her, so many words that raced to his lips.
“Am I dead?” It wasn’t the question he had expected to come out first. Lucille shook her head.
“You aren’t dead. Not yet, my little guppy,” she said, her hands continuing their soothing circuit from his hair to his shoulders and back.
“How are you here?” Gordon asked. Lucille considered her son for a moment. When she had last seen him, he had been a child. But Gordon was no longer a child. He had grown in strength. As much as she wanted to protect him from the painful knowledge he sought, she knew that it was no longer an option. Gordon was old enough to know the truth.
“You are in the in between,” she said. Gordon’s soft brown eyes looked back at her uncomprehendingly.
“The…in between?” he repeated. Lucille nodded and looked out to the hall, as if hearing something that Gordon couldn’t, “What happened, mom? Where are the others? Where’s Virgil?” Lucille’s eyes closed in pain.
“You nearly drowned,” she said. Gordon’s heart skipped several beats painfully.
“D…rowned?” Lucille took his hand and looked him in the eyes.
“When you and Virgil were in the North Sea…there was a wave…a violent one. It sent the ship listing. It nearly capsized. You were hit by falling debris and the ship sent you under as it thrashed in the surf…” she explained gently. Gordon’s second hand slowly let go of his mother as he brought it to his chest. The ache…the burn…it all made sense. There was a terrible, ugly familiarity to the experience. Gordon cast about for another question, anything to stay the onslaught of the memories from his hydrofoil incident.
“Were you there?” he asked. She shook her head.
“No, sweetheart. I wasn’t there.”
“Then how…”
“I heard Virgil telling the nurses what had happened,” she said, “He’s rather upset with them at the moment.” Gordon frowned.
“How come I can’t hear him?” If this was all happening around him, surely he would know. Lucille gave him the same pitying look she had given him before.
“You’re in the in between, guppy. You—“
“What does that mean?!” Gordon asked, a flash of his younger self rearing its head. She shook her head and pushed his hair back once more. She seemed to be working herself up to bearing some very unpleasant news.
“It means you are between life and death, my little guppy,” she said. “That you can see and hear me, means you are very close to death.” Gordon’s shoulders dropped, and he lowered his eyes as he processed the simple, yet completely devastating statement. So this was the end? He supposed he’d rather face it with his mother than on his own. Lucille leaned in to tilt his chin up again. “You aren’t dead yet, Gordon. You still have a choice.”
“I…do?” Lucille nodded to him.
“I don’t promise an easy or smooth recovery, but you can turn back now. You can still fight this, guppy,” she said. Gordon considered that a moment before locking his eyes with his mother again.
“But…what about you?” he asked, his voice small, “Will you be alone?” Lucille shook her head.
“Please don’t stay for me,” she said. “You deserve a long and happy life, Gordon. Don’t stay because you fear I will be alone. I will see you again one day.” Gordon’s eyes searched her face. If the pain in his chest was anything to go by, his recovery would be a long and terrible one. He didn’t relish the idea of another stint in the hospital. Yet at the same time, he couldn’t bring himself to forget about everything he had left to live for. His brothers…Grandma…Dad…Brains…Kayo…he couldn’t just let them down like this. He swallowed as he made up his mind.
“I’m so sorry, mom,” he said, pulling her into his arms once more, holding her like it was the last time. “I…I have to go. I have to fight.” Lucille smiled sadly and pulled him tightly against her as well.
“It’s ok, Gordon,” she said. “It will all be ok.” She slowly broke their contact and started to get up. Gordon couldn’t keep the small noise of protest completely down. Lucille walked over to the curtain surrounding his bed. She took it in her hand and took one more long look at Gordon, blowing him a kiss.
“Get some rest, Guppy. Your brothers will be happy to see you when you wake up.” Gordon watched her until she had curled the curtains all the way around and he didn’t dare close his eyes until her footsteps had vanished and he knew he was well and truly alone. Gordon dropped leadenly back on the pillow, thinking to himself that it was always hard to fall asleep with tears in his eyes.
~@~
Scott started awake as he heard a change in the rhythm of the machines measuring his brother’s vitals. He quickly looked around at all the monitors that were currently hooked up to his brother. Everything seemed to be stable….even elevating. That, at least, was promising. They’d almost lost him twice in the time they had been here and Scott wasn’t sure his heart could take a third decline.
He sat back in his seat and stretched his stiff shoulders. There was a reason they all hated hospitals. He almost missed the slight movement of Gordon’s fingers. He might have, if he had stretched a moment longer. Instead, he leaned in, putting his hand on the bed near Gordon’s.
“That’s it, Squid….easy does it…” Scott murmured soothingly. Gordon’s fingers again stretched out for contact, and Scott obliged, touching just fingertips at first. While Gordon wasn’t able to form words in his state, Scott could see his brother relax at the contact. Scott swallowed and pulled Gordon’s hand into his own.
“I’ve got you, Gordon. I’ve got you.”

Undone, 30/30 (Bitney) - Stephanie/Veronica

Chapter Summary: Bianca faces her deepest fear.
TW: Character death, physical violence with multiple injuries, emotional abuse, PTSD
***
“Courtney….Courtney wake up...please, please, oh god!”
Tears course down Bianca’s cheeks as her chest wrenches with gulping sobs. What the fuck did she do, what did she say to cause this? She doesn’t remember. She only remembers the terror, screaming with fear, and then the crash. The car had careened through the guardrail, crashing down a steep slope of rocks, onto a narrow stretch of sandy beach.
It’s all her fault. All her fault that they were in this mess to begin with. All her fault that Courtney has fallen forward, head bleeding, unmoving, kept upright only from the inflated airbags surrounding her. She grips one of her lifeless hands against her chest, unable to stop the tears that obscure her vision.
She’s never going to forgive herself.
“B?”
At first Bianca thinks she’s hallucinating, thinks her mind is playing cruel tricks on her, until she realizes that Courtney’s eyes have slowly opened.
“Oh god. Oh thank god. Fuck…” Bianca begins to cry harder, lifting Courtney’s hand, pressing her palm to her lips.
“Are you okay?” Courtney croaks out.
Of course that’s the first thing she asks. After a crash that Bianca caused, that nearly killed her. Of course the first thing she’s concerned with is whether Bianca is okay.
Bianca would laugh if it wasn’t so supremely fucked up.
“I’m fine, baby, but you...you’re hurt.” She reaches forward, touches her cheek.
“I feel...I feel okay.” Courtney takes a few deep breaths, flexing her fingers and toes. Testing her body, making sure she can move.
“That’s good. That’s really good,” Bianca says, relief coursing through her. It’s only then that she hears the sound of a disembodied voice coming from somewhere in the car.
“Hello? Ma’am? Are you still there?”
She’s still on the line with the 911 operator, Bianca realizes, searching frantically for her phone.
“Ma’am?”
“Yes, we’re here, please help!” she calls out, picking the phone up off the floor. “Please!”
“Do you smell something weird?” Courtney asks slowly, turning her head. “Like smoke?”
“Um…” Bianca’s been so preoccupied with worry over Courtney that she hasn’t even really taken in their surroundings. Her car is obviously totaled on the rocks, and when she starts to pay attention, she does smell smoke. Shit.
“We should get out of here,” Courtney says, unbuckling her seatbelt.
“Okay,” Bianca agrees. She unbuckles too, trying her door handle and finding it jammed, even when she uses force. “Shit. I think my door’s stuck, I-”
“Okay, mine seems alright.” Courtney opens her door and gets out, stepping onto the sand gingerly, and Bianca can tell how much pain she must be in from the way she moves.
She turns back and offers a hand to Bianca, to help her climb out. But Bianca doesn’t have time to take it before a figure emerges, and then all she can do is scream.
Her warning is too late. Jared’s grabbed Courtney, holding her in a restrained position before she can even blink. Bianca nearly dives after them, scrambling out of the car. There’s a knife glinting at Courtney’s throat, and it’s all Bianca can see, terror coursing through her body as she claps a hand over her mouth.
Jared turns to her, speaking in an eerily soft voice.
“Hey, baby. Are you okay?”
“Jared, what are you doing?” Bianca sobs. “Let her go, please.”
“Please,” Courtney echoes, eyes wide with fear.
“Shut up! I should fucking slit your throat right now; you almost killed my wife,” he barks in her ear, then turns to Bianca, voice almost cajoling. “You know I...I would never hurt you, Bianca. You know that, right? You’re still my wife, the mother of my baby. I love you more than anything in the world.”
“Let her go, Jared.” Bianca feels weak and tired, close to losing it entirely.
“Is this bitch really all you can think of right now?” He digs the knife in, drawing blood, and Courtney gasps, tears rolling down her cheeks.
Bianca can see how utterly terrified she is and it’s heartbreaking. She’s used to Courtney being the strong one, and seeing her face as she comes to terms with the helplessness of her position makes Bianca’s stomach turn.
She knows that her only hope, their only hope, is for him to let go, so she swallows down the panic, the bile rising in her throat, and repeats, “Let her go.”
“Look, I’m an open minded guy. You want to mess around with girls? I get it. But...this one’s a bad influence. Okay?”
“None of this is her fault, please-”
“Bianca, we can find another blonde, okay? It’s LA. They’re everywhere.” To Courtney, right into her ear, he murmurs, “You hear that, sweetheart? Everywhere.”
“Jared, I’m asking you one more time. Let her go. Okay?”
“Will you talk to me? About all this? Will you come back home?”
Bianca glances at Courtney’s face, pale and terrified, eyes glassy, before forcing herself to look directly into Jared's eyes. “Yes,” she promises, struggling to keep her voice steady.
“You’re lying.” He bends Courtney’s arm roughly behind her back, causing her to cry out.
“I’m not.” Bianca feels like she’s going to vomit, but she persists. “I’ve been having second thoughts about the divorce, because...because I love you so much. And...we’re gonna be parents. What we’ve wanted for so long.”
“What about your little girlfriend?”
“I don’t care about her,” Bianca’s voice breaks, but she goes on. “I just...if you hurt her, you’ll get in trouble, and I don’t want that. So please. Just let her go, and then we can go home and talk. Okay?”
“You really don’t care about her?”
“No. She’s just...a mistake. My brain was all fucked up from pregnancy hormones and I...I was confused. I thought you were angry with me, and that made me...hate myself. But now I...I want to come home.”
He stares at her, stone-faced, and Bianca can’t tell if it’s working. Her stomach churns, tears filling her eyes again. She feels desperate, unable to even look at Courtney, since the second she glances away from Jared’s face, he’d know for sure how she feels.
“Please,” she begs, the words feeling bitter and foreign in her mouth. “If something bad happened to you, because-because of my dumb fuck-up, then I’d never forgive myself. I love you. I love you so, so much.”
Jared finally releases Courtney and she sprints a few feet before stumbling, dropping to her knees in the sand. Bianca reaches for her, a sob of pure relief escaping her chest. She’s okay, she’s okay, Bianca told herself.
He comes forward, taking a step towards Bianca, but she’s too busy helping Courtney to her feet.
“Stay back!” she shouts, wrapping her arms around Courtney’s waist. All she wants is to protect her.
“You said that you would come home with me,” he growls, chest heaving.
“I lied.”
“I knew it. You fucking cunt!”
He lunges forward, and then it’s all a blur. Courtney manages to get between them, knock the knife from his hand, and then he grabs a fistful of her hair. In the struggle, he pulls her to the ground, wraps his hands around her throat.
Bianca doesn’t know how the rock got into her hands but she’s charging forward, hitting him on the back of the head as hard as she can. He turns around towards her and she hits him again, and again. And then she can’t stop, not until Courtney’s arms wrap around her from the side, pulling her away gently, letting the rock fall from her fingers into the sand.
She falls into Courtney’s arms, unable to stop shaking and crying.
“I didn’t mean it, I didn’t mean any of it, I-” she sobs, gasping for air.
“I know, baby. It’s okay.” Courtney presses her lips to Bianca’s cheek, holding her up, trying to soothe her as best she can, stroking her hair, repeating, “It’s okay.”
Bianca just shakes her head. Nothing is okay right now.
“It’s not…I’m going to get sent to prison. And the baby-”
“Hey.” Courtney cradles her face. “I promise. It’s going to be okay.”
Bianca knows it’s a lie. Knows that she can’t promise that. Especially when she looks over at Jared laying in the sand. There’s so much blood. She squeezes her eyes shut and Courtney takes her by the shoulders, turning her to face the water.
“Don’t look,” Courtney tells her. “Just...watch the water. It’s just us on the beach, okay?”
Bianca nods, trying to swallow down the fear stinging the back of her throat. Nothing right now is certain. The only thing she knows, as faint sirens in the distance get stronger, is that she is well and truly fucked.
***
Courtney tries to sit still as the doctor stitches up her forehead, but all she wants to do is jump up off the bed and run. She has no idea where Bianca is. No one will tell her anything. She wants to fight. She wants to scream. But she also feels incapacitated, every movement causing her body to ache and throb.
The scene at the beach was a nightmare. She doesn’t remember anything about the crash, only waking up, and then the horrifying confrontation with Jared. As the sirens approached, firefighters swarming down the side of the hill, Courtney barely had time to thrust her phone into Bianca’s hands before they ripped them apart. She urged her to call Ben or Jinkx, not say anything or make any statement until she spoke to the lawyers. The cops were next, followed closely by the paramedics, and by the time Courtney was being shut into an ambulance, Bianca was already in the back of a squad car. The paramedics apparently proclaimed her fine, unscathed enough not to go to the hospital with Courtney, even though Courtney tried frantically to tell them that she was pregnant, that she needed a doctor.
She can’t help the few tears that trickle down her cheeks, prompting the doctor to ask if it hurts. She shakes her head slightly, worry consuming her, barely listening as another doctor walks in to proclaim that her wrist is broken and she needs a cast.
Later, when her wrist is being wrapped, Ben rushes into the room, and the sight of a familiar face makes her burst into tears.
“Where is she? Is she okay?” Courtney asks, gulping for air.
Ben pulls a chair over, takes her free hand.
“Jinkx and Asia are both at the station with her.”
“It was self-defense, Ben, I swear. He had run us off the road, and then he held me at knifepoint and demanded that she go with him, and then he came towards us and tried to strangle me and I-”
“Hey, listen. I know this is probably an impossible request right now, but I need you to try not to worry. They know the history and what questions to ask; they’ll do everything they can to get her out of there. She’s in really good hands, I promise.”
Courtney squeezes her eyes shut. She knows she should be grateful--Bianca has both Jinkx and Asia on her side, fighting for her--but she can’t help feel guilty and helpless.
“So, um...visiting hours are over for the day, but...I mean, if they keep her overnight, I can drive you there in the morning.”
A sob escapes from Courtney’s chest.
“I’m sorry,” he says. “I’m really sorry.”
Courtney looks over at him, eyes liquid, nodding.
“I know. Thanks, Ben.”
“Of course,” Ben said, then someone seems to dawn on him and he asks, “Wait...he tried to strangle you?”
“Yes.” Courtney moves her head, and Ben looks over the bruises on her neck with a deeply furrowed brow.
“Can I take some pictures?”
“Yeah. The hospital already took some, but…” Courtney shifts, allows him to quickly snap a few photos of her injuries and send them off, probably to Jinkx.
When he’s finished, he puts his phone down, telling her, “Try to rest, okay?”
“Kay…” Courtney sighs, the physical exhaustion hitting her again like a freight train.
“Glad you danced with me that night?” he asks gently.
In spite of herself, Courtney does let out a chuckle at that.
“You have no idea,” she tells him, sighing.
***
Bianca knows that she should trust them, knows that Asia and Jinkx are there for her, but even just being in jail is so terrifying, she can barely speak.
What if the room is bugged? What if she somehow says the wrong thing? And what about Courtney? She had a head injury, and they’d taken her away in an ambulance, while Bianca was proclaimed unscathed. But what about the baby? And what if Courtney’s injuries are worse than what they’d thought? Bianca hates the idea of her all alone in the hospital, knows that she’ll be worrying and scared the entire time.
Jinkx promises that Ben will find Courtney, make sure she’s alright and keep her company in the hospital. That makes her feel a tiny, tiny bit better.
“Bianca, I know this is hard. But listen to me...our goal here is to get all of the charges dropped. Asia’s already got your therapist preparing a statement, and the fact that he immediately broke a restraining order helps your case a lot.”
Bianca nods slowly.
“We have his phone messages, and the texts,” Asia tells her. “They’re not overtly threatening, but they’re pretty bad. And there are witnesses to his temper from last Friday, so-”
Jinkx’s phone begins to buzz and she looks down.
“Fuck,” she says softly.
“What?” Asia asks.
“Ben just sent me pictures of Courtney’s injuries.” She looks up at Bianca, brow furrowed. “Was he choking her when you picked up the rock?”
Bianca nods, head down, tears rolling down her cheeks and splashing on the metal surface of the table.
“Okay, this is…” Jinkx gestures for Asia to come sit down. “Stay with her. I’m gonna go call the DA.”
Asia pours a glass of water and takes it to Bianca, encouraging her to drink. She takes a small sip, the cold water hitting the back of her dry, scratchy throat, immediately making her realize how thirsty she is.
“Are you okay?” Asia asks gently. “Is there anything you need right now? This must be horrible for you.”
“I…” Bianca stops. She knows what she wants to ask, but she’s afraid.
“What is it?” Asia prods.
“Is he…?” Bianca squeezes her eyes shut. She’d seen his body, of course, the pool of blood below his head. But they’d whisked her away so quickly, she didn’t see him being loaded into the back of the ambulance.
“He’s dead,” Asia tells her.
Bianca lets out a sob, overcome with guilt and shame. Because the first feeling she had when she heard the news wasn’t remorse. It wasn’t shock, or sadness, or even numbness. It was relief.
Asia takes one of her hands, holds it tenderly while she cries.
***
It takes Jinkx almost a full day of fighting with the DA’s office, but once they see the preponderance of evidence supporting both self-defense and defense of another, they finally agree to drop all charges.
After Bianca’s processed and released, she trudges towards the exit. She’s not sure why it’s surprising to spot Courtney in the waiting area, but it’s not until Courtney practically leaps over a row of chairs and throws her arms around her that Bianca falls apart, sobbing against her.
Courtney holds her, unmoving, letting her cry for as long as she needs to. When Bianca finally pulls back, surveying Courtney’s injuries with red, swollen eyes, she manages to choke out, “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. Are you okay?” Courtney murmurs, and Bianca nods. “Are you sure? Do you want to see a doctor?”
“Not today,” Bianca says tearfully. “I just want to go home.”
“Okay,” Courtney says, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
***
It’s a few days later, laying in bed, when Bianca surprises Courtney with the desire to return to work.
“Are you serious?”
Bianca nods, closing her eyes briefly to let a wave of nausea pass over her before looking up at Courtney with clear eyes.
“I just need one thing to feel normal,” she says. “And if I can just finish the season…”
Courtney nods, understanding, and pulls her close. “If that’s what you want, then that’s what you should do.”
It doesn’t really feel normal, though. Not exactly. It’s still a strange existence where sometimes, the ground shifts too quickly beneath her feet and it takes her a moment to adjust. She learns to move slower, breathe deeper.
In the beginning, Courtney insists on driving her and picking her up every day, broken wrist and all. She still can’t really work, not with her cast on, but she doesn’t want Bianca to be alone in the car. It takes Bianca a few weeks to convince her that she can handle the fifteen minute commute herself. (Sometimes she thinks it’s herself that she really needs to convince.) Finally, after the car insurance money comes through and she buys herself a new car to replace the totaled wreck she left behind on the beach, Courtney relents.
And then one day at the beginning of December, one unremarkable day, she finds herself super aggravated in the morning by the changing deadlines as the schedule for that week’s episode keeps moving around, the ADs trying to accommodate demands from 3 different actors. At lunch, Adore keeps cracking her up with stories about a disastrous gig her band had over the weekend. Later in the afternoon, the baby must be doing the can-can, kicking so much that by the time Bianca gets home, she can’t wait to have Courtney feel it. And then of course, they get so distracted bickering about names that the onions begin burning on the stove, setting off the smoke alarms and nearly destroying a pan.
It isn’t until late in the evening, when Courtney settles into bed beside her, that she realizes: it’s been a whole day. A whole day of work stress and laughter and joy and aggravation. And she hasn’t thought about him once. She lets out a long, relieved sigh, tears filling her eyes.
“Are you okay?” Courtney slides an arm around her. Her cast came off a few weeks ago, replaced now with a more flexible brace. Her green eyes are soft, caring, and Bianca can’t resist reaching out to touch her cheek, chuckling softly as Courtney nuzzles back into her hand like a greedy kitten.
“Yeah...I was just thinking about…”
Courtney waits patiently, fingers lightly stroking Bianca’s abdomen.
“...about how we are not going to name her Kylie, and you need to stop bringing it up.” Bianca twists her expression into one of stern seriousness.
“But-”
“No buts! No Kylie!” Bianca exclaims, and Courtney lets out a scoff.
“Fine,” she concedes. “What about Julian Assange Del Rio?”
“You’re a demon.”
“Alright, alright...but Olivia Newton John is still on the table, right?”
“I told you that I will consider Olivia. But not Newton John.”
“Well then what’s the point?” Courtney huffs crossly, flopping backwards against the pillows with her arms crossed.
Bianca narrows her eyes, both of them glaring at each other for a few heated moments until they simultaneously break, dissolving into laughter.
She takes Courtney’s face in her hands, pulling her in for a messy, giggly kiss.
“Love you, B.”
“I love you, too. Idiot.”
***
Ruby Del Rio is born on April 1st. Courtney says this means that she’s destined to be hilarious like her mother, but Bianca isn’t sure.
“April Fool’s Day isn’t exactly the height of comedy, is it?”
“Well...she’s an infant. Did you expect cutting social satire?” Courtney counters. She’s wedged herself into Bianca’s narrow hospital bed, snuggling against her shoulder.
“True.” Bianca gazes down at the baby in her arms, a little pink creature with blotchy cheeks and a wisp of light brown hair. She’s the most beautiful thing Bianca’s ever seen. “You gonna be funny, baby girl? Was your first joke destroying mama’s pussy? Huh? Was that funny?”
“Assuming you heal, it’s a pretty good prank,” Courtney says. “Besides, she’s got your head, what did you expect?”
“Between her giant head and getting me to shit on the operating table, she really is pretty hilarious,” Bianca says, and Courtney laughs. “What are you gonna do next, Ruby? How are you gonna top that?”
Ruby yawns, her tiny mouth opening so wide that Bianca is afraid her jaw is gonna unhinge.
“Maybe it’s too soon to pile so many expectations on her,” Courtney says.
“Maybe.” Bianca touches her hand, marveling at how small and perfect her little fingers are, how each one ends in its very own nail. And then when she grabs onto Bianca’s finger, she nearly bursts into tears of joy. She wonders if all parents are this amazed with their newborns, this enchanted by even the most mundane details of their offspring. Probably, yes.
“Although...I did bring this…” Courtney pulls something out of her back pocket and shows it to Bianca. It’s a tiny, baby-sized, bubblegum-pink pussy hat.
Bianca laughs, saying, “Put it on.”
Courtney gently slides the hat onto Ruby’s head, trying not to wake her.
“Awww...there you go, Ruby,” Bianca coos. “Now you can be just like all the basic white girls in our neighborhood…”
“Hey! That’s...fair, actually,” Courtney laughs, resting her cheek on Bianca’s shoulder.
Bianca sighs, watching her fluttering eyelids, feeling the comforting warmth of her sleeping body.
“She’s pretty cute, huh?” she murmurs.
“She’s perfect,” Courtney declares. “Absolutely perfect.”

because fuck the NYT paywall:
By Elizabeth Williamson
Sept. 20, 2022
WATERBURY, Conn. — A federal bankruptcy judge in Houston ordered new personnel to oversee the bankruptcy of Alex Jones’s Infowars late on Tuesday, citing an ongoing lack of transparency, including over Mr. Jones’s lavish personal spending.
Judge Christopher Lopez dismissed Mr. Jones’s attorney and chief restructuring officer in the bankruptcy of Free Speech Systems, Infowars’ parent company, and expanded the duties of a Department of Justice-appointed trustee already monitoring the case. The judge authorized the trustee to hire additional legal and other help, specifying that any new hires must have “no connection to any of these cases,” he said, citing a need to investigate “insider relationships.”
“There has to be greater transparency in this case,” Judge Lopez said during the hearing on Tuesday, pointing to concerns with spending and other disclosures on the part of the company, which is run by Mr. Jones. “Without transparency, people lose faith in the process,” he added, referring to the federal bankruptcy system.
The lawyer and restructuring officer were together attempting to reorganize the company as part of the bankruptcy. In dismissing them, the judge did not fault their work, but rather cited a “lack of candor” on the part of the company, whose moves are dictated by Mr. Jones.
Mr. Jones put Free Speech Systems into bankruptcy in late July and has said he owes $54 million to PQPR, an entity owned and operated directly and indirectly by Mr. Jones and his parents. He filed the bankruptcy partly in response to ongoing litigation against him by the family members of 10 Sandy Hook victims, who say the bankruptcy is a gambit to prevent them from collecting what promise to be heavy financial damages in the cases.
Understand the Cases Against Alex Jones
Card 1 of 6
A united front. Alex Jones, a far-right conspiracy theorist, is the focus of a long-running legal battle waged by families of victims of a mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in 2012. Here is what to know:
Pushing misinformation. Mr. Jones used his Infowars media company to spread lies about Sandy Hook, claiming that the attack in 2012, in which 20 first graders and six educators were killed, was a hoax. The families of the victims say Mr. Jones’s lies have added to their devastation and his followers have harassed them, threatening their safety.
Defamation lawsuits. The families of 10 Sandy Hook victims sued Mr. Jones in four separate lawsuits. The cases never made it to a jury; Mr. Jones was found liable by default in all of them because he refused to turn over documents, including financial records, ordered by the courts over four years of litigation.
Mr. Jones’s line of defense. The Infowars host has claimed that his right to free speech protected him, even though the outcome of the cases was due to the fact that he failed to provide the necessary documents and testify.
Three new trials. A trial in Austin, Texas this July was the first of three that will determine how much Mr. Jones must pay the families of the Sandy Hook victims. The other two are scheduled for September, but are on hold after Mr. Jones put the Infowars parent company, Free Speech Systems, into Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week, halting all pending litigation.
Compensatory and punitive damages. On Aug. 4, a jury in the Texas trial awarded the parents of one of the children killed in the mass shooting more than $4 million in compensatory damages, which are based on proven harm, loss or injury. A day later, jurors decided Mr. Jones must pay the parents $45.2 million in punitive damages, which aim to punish especially harmful behavior and tend to be granted at the court’s discretion.
The families filed four separate defamation lawsuits against Mr. Jones after he spent years spreading lies that the Dec. 14, 2012, shooting that killed 20 first graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., was a government pretext for gun control and that their relatives were actors in the plot. People who believed Mr. Jones’s false claims have tormented the families online, confronted them on the street and threatened their lives.
Mr. Jones lost all four cases last year. Judges in Texas and Connecticut ruled him liable by default after he refused to comply with discovery orders. The families’ victories in those lawsuits set the stage for three trials for damages, after two of the cases were combined. In the first, in August, a jury awarded Neil Heslin and Scarlett Lewis, parents of the Sandy Hook victim Jesse Lewis, 6, compensatory and punitive damages of nearly $50 million. The second is in progress in Superior Court in Waterbury, Conn., resulting from a lawsuit filed by the families of eight other victims.
Mr. Jones is in Connecticut and is expected to testify in the damages trial this week. On Tuesday, Judge Lopez cited Mr. Jones’s spending of $80,000 for “security” for his trip to Connecticut as one of the questionable expenses prompting his decision to impose additional oversight. Mr. Jones has also run up tens of thousands of dollars in credit card debt, according to his court filings.
“This was a monumental step in increasing the transparency around a bankruptcy that Jones and his proxies have until now been keeping in the dark,” said Avi Moshenberg, who is representing the Sandy Hook families in a separate lawsuit against Mr. Jones.
In a filing to the bankruptcy court in late August, the families accused Mr. Jones of funneling assets from his business to himself and his relatives. The Sandy Hook families said in the filing that Mr. Jones had siphoned nearly $62 million from his business into financial vehicles benefiting himself and his family beginning in 2018, when the Sandy Hook families first filed suit.
Mr. Jones’s $54 million debt to PQPR is fictional, the families’ lawyers said in the August filing, calling the claim “a centerpiece of Jones’s plan to avoid compensating the Sandy Hook families.”
tl;dr the actual business of infowars is going to be handed over immediately to a trustee that works for the department of justice, who is going to take over handling where money goes for day-to-day operations while also auditing the business and possibly reversing prior fraudulent transactions. alex jones can no longer send himself money while insisting he's broke because he owes himself so much money. the trustee will be able to see exactly how much money he's making, and will be able to send it where it's actually supposed to go while also reporting the exact state of infowars' finances to the court, something jones literally defaulted to avoid doing.
