Ska, what perfume do you associate with Lee and Eugene from Queer?

I have 1000% been thinking about this already which is a testament to how this book (and film) are eating my brain!

On a very flat Watsonian level they’re both living such starkly utilitarian lives as alienated expats that it’s hard to imagine them having anything so extraneous in their lives. (Eugene’s relatively closer to normalcy and a settled life — before he meets Lee, at least — and I’d tentatively link him with one of the era’s fragranced aftershaves like Skin Bracer.) But for vibes we have so much to go on!

Lee’s fragrance profile should be big, virile, and strange — there are a lot of wonderful perfumes with narcotic notes (and arguably intoxicating notes are a foundation of the modern perfume genre with tobacco notes and the same aromatic botanicals that have a strong presence in distilled liquors like gin) but his experience of the whole kaleidoscopic world of dope is less sweetly seductive and more sweaty and obsessive. I could see him with a smoky, dirty vintage animalic like Knize Ten. Elegant and not cheap, fitting his well to do upbringing and European experience, but leathery and birch-tarry and unmistakable. It seems to strike some people as genteel in an old school kind of way but will always have skanky vibes for me. Male thot cologne and overwhelmingly masculine, except…

Or ELdO Secretions Magnifiques maybe? Raunchy and weird and an acquired taste given the stated goal:

The famous “4S”: Sueur, Salive, Sang et Sperme (Sweat, Saliva, Blood and Sperm)

Sex, stress, and the triumph of desire over reason. Cummy and marine.

For Eugene I think of DS & Durga Burning Barbershop:

Something that’s been radically transformed by its proximity to a raging force of nature, but not overtaken.

Or something very very close in sillage, barely noticeable, hanging close on the skin so you’re not sure if you’re just smelling the body itself. Guiltily anxiously yet hornily huffing your sleeping lover until he shifts away from you.

I would love it if Strangers Parfumerie did a scent inspired by this film — they’re a really wonderful experimental indie house with a lot of scents inspired by queer art and queer eroticism. It’ll all depend on whether the solo perfumer behind it vibes with the novel and its adaptation but it would be cool.

already had a massive crush on javier before i went to see this movie so not even the awful bleach job and weird blue contacts could stop me.

saw this in theaters in 2012 seated in between my mother and father. experienced what i can only liken to 10x speed samsara. have never been the same.

i have like. this weird kind of... blind spot? i guess? where because i watched this show as it aired and because tumblr fandom was... the way it was in 2014. i always kind of default to fandom!will in my mind and am like "what the fuck was all that? what would hannibal ever see in him?" and then i rewatch and i am reminded of my absolute darling freak of a man who pulls people towards him like a sinkhole and lives the whole of his life trying not to drown in the sucking wound he has in the middle of his chest.

anyway. hannibal is my baby forever in all his myriad forms but madsibal is incomparable imo. and his and will's is a love story for the ages. truly, like... apotheosis. sublimation of form. gothic fairytale romance. cradle of filth lyrics.

Charlie/India Stoker - Ship it

What made you ship it?

The piano duet!

What are your favorite things about the ship?

I love a good corruption arc involving a young female character. I can't think of many stories that have the kind of ending that Stoker has, which I appreciate. Also, doubling! Both India and Charlie have this eerie out of place feel to them - India being locked away in this gothic mansion, isolated from her peers, Charlie being locked away in an institution.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I suppose that I'm more invested in India as a character than I am with Charlie. He's there for her journey so I don't mind her killing him at the end (although I do like fic that explores what would happen if he lived.)

Uncle Charlie/Charlie - Ship it

What made you ship it?

I was intrigued by it the first time I watched the film but I resisted shipping it, then a few years ago I watched the film properly for the second time and they took over my brain and haven't let go yet.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

That it's such a rich complex relationship. It's both extremely troubling (incestuous, abusive and an age gap - they're a triple threat!) and extremely romantic. What does it mean to be connected, by blood and potentially psychically, to someone like Uncle Charlie who is awful yet also has a point about some things? Again, the doubling and the way it examines gender roles are really interesting to me (people who say it can't be a noir because there's no femme fatale are wrong - Uncle Charlie is clearly the femme fatale!)

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

This is unpopular with the letterboxd crowd but the incestuous subtext is what elevates the film beyond a standard thriller and it would not be better if it wasn't there. Just because something makes you uncomfortable doesn't mean that it's bad.

Silva/Bond - Ship it

What made you ship it?

I watched Skyfall, saw Bond getting homoerotically menaced and I enjoyed it.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

The interesting thing about the Craig Bond films is the way they examine what does it mean to be an MI6 agent and Silva operates as a dark mirror to Bond to explore this. When you factor in M their relationship almost feels pseudo-incestuous with Bond as the good loyal son and Silva the bad rebellious son come back to torment Mummy. There have been Bond films that have tried to touch on these kind of themes but this one goes as far as it can for a mainstream blockbuster.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

Shipping it in general seems to be unpopular. For some reason everyone went crazy for Bond/Q instead.
