Can I just say, apropos of nothing, that "anti dark spot" skin cream is just skin lightening cream by any other name, and as somebody with freckles, its existence is (a) offensive and (b) a scam.

(b) first: freckles are made of melanin, and melanin is INSIDE your skin, no amount of snake oil scam cream is going to remove them. You might be able to reduce how many form by using suncream, but you'd be amazed how easily they form (I just have to glance at the sun and I've got another half dozen), and besides, suncream will not have any effect on freckles that are already there, or on birthmark freckles, which are just a permanent feature of your skin.

So let's get to (a). Freckles come with certain specific complexions: ginger and pale complexions historically associated with Saxon and Celtic heritage; darker complexions associated with combined white and African heritage; and very dark complexions e.g. in India. All of these groups have historically faced prejudice. You might be surprised by the first one, but in the UK, the class system is derived from racial differences between colonising Normans and indigenous groups, and prejudice against features like freckles and red hair were a way to discourage intermarriage with "bad stock". And please think of all this if you're ever tempted to talk disparagingly about "sun damage" next time you see a freckled face.

Just like tannins in wine, avocado trees produce a compound (persin) to protect from predators. And that compound can be mildly toxic/allergenic to some. The wiki link suggests it’s mainly in the leaves, skin, and seed; and leeches into the fruit. Which, in theory, means that shaving off an outer and inner layer, could give extra protection.

The India “study” is laughable for its junior high school approach to DNA testing and it is bizarre that this would be cited by Superfoodly as in any way a marker for anything at all. A “50% methanolic extract” of anything, including water will cause the same problem – and will kill you outright. That this was published is just part of the nonsense of the world. The increasing dosing reflects increasing methanol concentrations in the ‘study’ – and the NIH if it funded this only reinforces the case for it to be shuttered altogether for its waste. Read Derek Lowe’s “In the Pipeline” for the number of papers coming out of this realm that cannot be reproduced or amount to self-evident idiocy – the numbers are staggering and upwards of 95%.

Avocado is perhaps the most nutrient dense cultivar extant. There are compounds in the seed that are toxic and are not found in the mesocarp. Nevertheless, the compounds of unique therapeutic interest in avocado are lipidic furans and their precursors, the avocatins, that play an extraordinary role in renormalization of many human pathologies and are part of the DNA of the fruit, found everywhere in it: leaves, seeds, skins, mesocarp. These were studied by me and others at the Greenfield Toxicology Laboratory at Eli Lilly and found to be as safe as can be measured for genotox. That is, a zero effect.

There is nothing biologically interesting about refined avocado oil and unrefined avocado oil is so unstable as to be not worth the purchase and no one who produces the oil pretends otherwise – – unlike virgin olive oil, virgin avocado oil (organic or not) is terrible tasting, smelly and stains everything it touches. Topically the oil penetrates the skin much faster than any other oil, but it’s viscosity is so high as to create skin clogging and therefore is comedogenic.

Meaning, they compared the mutagenic effects of the methanol with and without avocado.Methanol is a basic type of alcohol which yes, is more toxic than the alcohol type found in say, vodka, but methanol is among the 3 most common solvents used in scientific studies. The bottom line is that when you compare the vehicle with and without the tested ingredient, you have a baseline for comparison.

If you're anything like me, although you know Instagram marketing is a filter-filled donut of falsehood and the influencer who's in histrionics "absolutely LOVING!" a product is lying through her teeth for the Moneys, sometimes you can't help but fall prey to a pretty picture; and the enormous and thriving industrial complex of marketing mechanics behind it. They used sunlight, you guys. And BOUGAINVILLEAS. And people with wonderful bone structure. I'm only human after all.

It was about two months ago when I caved, and ordered two of Blur India's liquid lipsticks in the unimaginatively and forgettably named shades under the category that I like to call 'This Company Likes Having Sex'- they might've been called nudes, or dudes, or dudes with nudes. I forget, and I digress.

I received my package in the mail a few days later; taking it to my room brimming with excitement. And this, reader, is where things go horribly wrong with this story. I opened the box up, took out a lipstick, and realised in the span of thirty seconds and one application on my lips that

there was about a picogram of product in the whole bottle (factory mishap? or more sinister, built this way?)

everyone on Instagram was lying to me, without exception, and

my lips were on FIRE

Not literally, but trying to put some of that lipstick on my lips had meant I had scraped off half of the skin on them in the process. It JUST. WOULDN'T. SPREAD. My little sister had play makeup growing up that was easier to apply. I had given myself 'lipstick' with a permanent marker in sixth grade that was easier to apply. If you're Hercules, I would recommend this product. If you aren't, RIP your mouth.

Next; the patchiness. OH lord, the patchiness. Quilts in old fashioned TV shows would be put to shame by the way this lipstick spread itself out. Jesters could've worn my lower lip to court in medieval times. I had squares of globs of pigment, followed by swathes of skin as naked as the day I was born. I was shocked, but then distracted by the dryness. Bear in mind, I have a LOT of liquid lipstick. Name the brand, name the shade. None of them had done such a fantastic job of drying me out like this product did. My lips were parched. They were arid. You could've used them as the before in a vaseline ad for lotion.

The shade also looked nothing like it looked online, but that I could excuse. You know, given my mouth was figuratively in a drought.

But how could they have marketed themselves so effectively? I wondered. How could not a single post in their 600-ish posts have revealed the true nature of this malevolent batch of lipsticks?

In a sudden gust of realisation, it hit me why they called themselves Blur India. Every single post, every try-on video, every piece of promotional material, comes filtered to the nines. Pores? Invisible. Texture? Invisible. Horribly cracked mess of product? I N V I S I B L E

I end this post with a PSA. Don't trust influencers. Don't buy Insta makeup. Don't blow this up so I don't get hit with a lawsuit.
