Carson of Venus: The Eye of Amtor #1
Tumblr media
Carson of Venus: The Eye of Amtor #1 American Mythology Productions 2020 Written by Mike Wolfer & Matt Betts Illustrated by Vincenzo Carratù Coloured by Periya Pillai Pellucidar: Dark of the Sun Written by Christopher Paul Carey Illustrated by Mike Wolfer Coloured by Periya Pillai All Lettering by Natalie Jane     In 2020, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. will be launching the Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe, an all-new series of interconnected novels by today's top sci-fi writers... And it all begins at American Mythology with a groundbreaking comics prequel series to the first ERB Universe novel, Matt Betts' Carson of Venus: The Edge of All Worlds! In Carson of Venus: Eye of Amtor, stranded Earthman Carson Napier fights against time and the planet Venus itself, tasked with gathering natural artifacts from across wild Amtor before a mad king executes his friends Ero Shan and Nalte. But Carson is not alone, as Princess Duare battles at his side against unearthly creatures and savage landscapes! Then, thrill to the adventures of scientist Jason Gridley and his mysterious protégé Victory Harben in the astounding Pellucidar: Dark of the Sun, a special, three-part, back-up story that launches the epic plot-line that will run throughout the novels in the first ERBU "super-arc!"     For me this is something I find myself enjoying so very much. While Dynamite may utilise the world of John Carter what American Mythology is doing is something else entirely. If for whatever reason you aren't familiar with the worlds that Burroughs created these stories are the most closely resembling what it was he did. So for long-time fans and for those being introduced the effect is nearly the same, we're welcomed into worlds of awe, wonder and pure imagination. Also that I am constantly amazed by what we see within the pages is incredible, it's like opening a new gift with each arc because you just don't know what's going to be inside. The love, care and passion that these are done with shines through every panel of every page and that's something that bleeds into the reader as well.     First of all thank you for this opening splash page because we see these giant zebra hyena's and they are after the ugly brutish my little ponies and it sets the stage for what's to come beautifully. Since Burroughs drew heavily upon the influences he knew it should come as no surprise that we see an isolated “neutral” city that seems to be run by a cross of Roman and Greek influences. I felt the Robot warning me of danger almost immediately and I think that adds something to the mix that is welcome and missing in general. That feeling you get from the mix of writing and illustration that creates the ambiance that is as much a tell as anything else.     The story & plot development here is amazing and how we see the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information is perfectly presented. The character development is strong and constantly growing and moving forward. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way while also helping to create the books ebb & flow is so nicely rendered.     The interiors here are phenomenal! The linework is exquisite and the creativity and imagination on display that is brought to life through how the attention to detail shines through, fabulous dahling. I am a fan of the way we see backgrounds and how they work within the composition in the panels to bring depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall size and scope to the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such a strong and beautiful eye for storytelling. The colour work is extremely well handled here and the array of purples we see makes my heart sing, it's regal of course and my favourite colour. The way that we see the highlights, shading and shadow work created through the varying hues and tones within the colours is gorgeously rendered here. Plus that hairy chest on Carson, sigh.     I am definitely looking forward to what is coming next as the pair have to find the materials needed for the job Carson needs to do.     The back-up feature here is as delightful as the main one. Though I have to admit the interiors are a lot more interesting. That first page with the skulls, flowers and vines for the border oh yeah that's what I am talking about! This is the kind of crisp, clean and strong linework that I gravitate towards. The dialogue and what we see happening is fantastic! It is all about the banter between them for me as it has this ring of authenticity and playfulness that is rare to come by. I just wish it were longer lol.      So American Mythology and the worlds of Edgar Rice Burroughs continues to thrill audiences as it was always meant to and should be!

Swamy Ramanuja and Thirupavai Pasuram 21
Pasuram 21 (Vallal perum pasukkal aatra padaithaan)
When someone says “vallal perum pasukkal aatra padaithan”, nothing comes to our mind other than the glories of Swami Ramanuja. If we ask a person as to how many sishyas did, acharyas before Swami Ramanuja had, the answer would be in single digits, one, two, five, or six. But if we ask how many sishyas did Swami Ramanuja had, the answer would be “ekaanthinaam dvaadasabis sahasrai”, “samsevidhas samyamisapdasathya”, i.e lots and lots of them. Imagine Swami Ramanuja walking first, followed by 700+ sanyaasis, followed by 12,000 srivaishnavas, followed by innumerable women in the streets of Srirangam. What a sight it would have been! As Swami Nammazhwar himself remarked about the future emergence of Swami Ramanuja and said “Kandom Kandom Kandom! kannuku iniyana kandom” (Thiruvaimozhi 5.2.2). This may be the best phrase of exclamation for that sight.  Not only that, He chose the cream of the cream and appointed them as the 74 simhaasanaadhipathis. If we look at the glories of these 74 simhaasanaadhipathis, there is one word that captures it “yetra kalangal edhir pongi meedhalipa”. They are sishyas of Swami Ramanuja, who are characterized by the highest qualities that a sishya should possess to match an acharyan like Swami Ramanuja. (aacharya saarva baumaraana Ramanujaku yetriirukum thanmai udayaya sathpaathra boothargalaana chachisyargal). (Edhir pongi meedhalipa – “sishyadicheth paraajayam” , they surpass the acharyan as well. These qualities of those sishyas were again due to Swami Ramanuja’s divine blessing upon them.
One of the 74 simhaasanaadhipathis was Swami Koorathaazhwaan. Once upon a time, Swami Ramanuja and Swami Koorathaazhwan set to Kashmir to get the Bhoodayanavruthi grantham from the library over there. With great difficulty, they got there and even got the permission to read and take notes from that voluminous book. But due to some unforeseen circumstances, the book was not available to us for the time that they wanted to enjoy them. Swami Ramanuja said “Oh! Koorathaazhwaan! We did not get a good opportunity to read that grantham this time. We were not able to finish the book fully”.  Swami Koorathaazhwan replied “Swami. Do not worry! Last night, when devareer went to sleep, adiyen glanced it once and due to your divine grace, adiyen is able to remember all the pages of the book verbatim. So, please tell me where should adiyen tell those contents to devareer. Right here? or in the middle of the 2 rivers (referring to Srirangam)”.  (“Inge vinnapam seyyavo, irandaatrin naduve vinnapam seyyavo?”).
Swami Thiruvarangathamudhanar celebrates Swami Koorathaazhwan in his Ramanuja Nootrandaadhi
“Mozhiyai kadakum perum pugazhaan vanja mukkurumbaam
Kuzhiyai kadakum nam koorathaazhwaan saran koodiyapin
Pazhiyai kadakum iraamanusan pugah paadi, alla
Vazhiyai kadathal, enakini yaadhum varutham andre”
  -Ramanuja Notrandaadhi 7
Tumblr media
Yetra Kalangal Edhir Pongi Meedhalithava Swami’s sishyaas
This is one example of how a sishya of Swami Ramanuja is. Likewise, there are many more stories in Swami’s life like this to illustrate the glories of the great sishyas that Swami Ramanuja graced. Swami Arulala Perumal Emberumanar, Swami Mudhaliaandaan, Swami Embaar, all were like this. These sishyas are referred to as “maatraadhe paal soriyum”. They shower the meanings and explanations that they learnt from Swami Ramanuja without any change, without inserting any of their own thoughts. They give us those thoughts of Swami Ramanuja in a book form of us, like how a cow would give copious amount of milk incessantly, when it listens to Krishna’s flute. Such sishyas (vallam perum pasukal) were made so (aatra padaithavar) by Swami Ramanuja. (aatra refers = aparimithamaaga, i.e., without any boundaries, brilliant, wonderful etc). “maatraar unaku vali tholaindhu un vaasar kan” refers to Yadhavaprakas, the guru of Swami Ramanuja earlier, who realized that he is in the wrong path, and surrendered at the Lotus feet of Swami Ramanuja (maatraar (Yadhavaprakasar), vali tholaindhu (after realizing that he is week , i.e., his fallacies, un vaasar kan – at the Lotus feet of Swami Ramanuja.

Carson of Venus: Realm of the Dead #1
Tumblr media
Carson of Venus: Realm of the Dead #1 American Mythology Productions 2020 Written by Mike Wolfer Illustrated by Cyrus Mesarcia Coloured by Periya Pillai Lettered by Natalie Jane     In an act of vengeance for the humiliation he suffered at Carson's hands years before, Skor succeeded in kidnapping Duare and Nalte. With the help of two time-lost adventures from a strange land called “Caspak,” Carson and Ero Shan succeeded in rescuing Nalte, but Skor managed to escape with Duare in tow. Not wanting to expose his friends to further danger, Carson ordered Ero Shan to return Nalte to Sanara, while he would strike out on his own in search of his kidnapped, true love. But terrors that lurk in the dense jungles of Amtor are as immeasurable as they are fearsome.....     There is a lot to like here and chief among them is the fact that we see Amtor, Venus, explored further. I mean it's our sister planet and hidden beneath all those clouds so the fact that Burroughs wanted to populate it with these similar and yet different species. I love this it also gives Cyrus and Periya that opportunity to take those and use their own creativity and all together it really creates something special. For those who have never had the opportunity to explore the worlds Edgar built this is a perfect opportunity to do so.     I really like the way that this is being told. Mike does such a marvellous with the story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold and how the reader learns information. Case in point is when Carson encounters someone and their conversation which bleeds into the character development making it all the more impressive. Said character development is amazing to see through the situations and circumstances that the characters find themselves in. This reveals so much about the characters and you feel for them in some really nice and unexpected ways. I cannot be any more impressed with the way Mike is telling this story. The pacing is superb and how it flows through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way helps create this dynamic ebb & flow to the book.     I used to think Burrough's was a great inspiration for a lot of his stories but with the way we see the story's here through American Mythology it not only reignites that in me but it serves as a reminder of just how good and ahead of his time he was. To bring this to a new generation as well it something special in my opinion.     The interiors here are just simply wondrous to behold. To see those creatures opening up the book is just beyond the scope of imagination and it really catches the readers' eye and attention. I love the mood, tone and feel that the interiors bring to this and has this dark menacing feel throughout which just heightens every emotion that you feel. The linework is gorgeous and how the varying weights are being utilised to show off the attention to detail is sensational. When you see the wildlife and the treetops and the ground what we see almost has this fantasy/magical quality to it. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels shows this stellar eye for storytelling. The composition within the panels with how these extraordinary backgrounds are shown bring us some dynamite depth perception, scale and the overall sense of the size and scope of the story. The colour work is phenomenal and how we see these hues and tones within the colours creating the shading, highlights and shadows is beyond incredible. The way we see them utilised throughout really is super impressive and just a highlight.      This really plays heavily to what true science fiction storytelling is all about and it harkens us back to an age when storytelling was full of awe and wonder mixed with danger and romance. It doesn't get much better than this my friends.

The Monster Men “Soul of the Beast” #1
Tumblr media
The Monster Men: “Soul of the Beast” #1 American Mythology Productions 2019 Written by Mike Wolfer Illustrated by Roy Allan Martinez Coloured by Periya Pillai Lettered by Natalie Jane     Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic tale of mad science, shocking horror, and monsters galore rages to life in an all-new comic story that begins where "The Monster Men" novel ended! On a secluded, jungle island near Borneo, Professor Maxon and his daughter Virginia barely survived the onslaught of the rampaging, half-human beasts that he created in his laboratory. Now, Virginia and Townsend Harper Jr. return to the island where he originally believed that he was Maxon's mysterious creature, Number 13... But the real Number 13 is very much alive and prowls the steaming, island jungle in search of human victims! Mike Wolfer and Roy Allan Martinez, the team who brought you Eternal Thirst of Dracula, combine their talents once again to create an unparalleled excursion into terror, officially endorsed by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. as the sequel to the classic horror novel! This special, prelude one-shot leads directly into the upcoming The Monster Men: Heart of Wrath mini-series.     Let me tell you what I love about this. Mike cares for and totally appreciates the world these characters live in and it shows in the way that the story is being told. It has this novel approach to it, meaning it's told more like a prose novel than a comic book, as if the book were an adaptation of a novel. That is how it reads and utterly fantastic to experience this. There is another added bonus here and that's if you haven't the Burroughs novels that's okay because the way that this is being told also makes it completely new reader friendly. Take that chance and pick this up and see the kind of elevated storytelling that we find at American Mythology.     I am loving the way that this story is being told. The narration and how that relates to what we see and which leads to meeting the narrator is incredibly interesting and and well told. Whom he is speaking to or of remains a bit of a mystery but we do learn that they are more than familiar with the world of the weird that Burroughs wrote about. As we meet the cast of characters for the first time, in this book, it has this strange effect. We've been pretty much told what they are going to do and why and seeing this trio arriving at their destination leaves that puts this feeling in your gut that something bad is about to go down.     Roy Allan is an amazing talented illustrator and his linework that we see and how he is able to manipulate the varying weights bring out this attention to detail is something to see. When you look at some of the panels and the folks within I see an influences of artists that are so eerie and yet gorgeous. The composition inside the panels and how the backgrounds are utilised to help show us depth perception, scale and brings us a sense of size and scope to the book. Every page we see here is so beautifully done and the colouring included to make what we see just as much a visual journey as it is a written one. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such a sensational eye for storytelling. The colour work is exquisite to behold. Periya is able to create that eerie mood where you feel that the jungle is quiet, too quiet. The way we see the various hues and tones within colours to create the shading, highlights and shadows is stupendous to see on the page.     This story just makes me want to see and read so much more. The writing here is mindbogglingly good and it takes into this world as if we were a part of it, that we're there with Bulan as they experience this island and face their personal demons. Not to mention what else may be living on this island in the 13 months they've been gone. On a side note seeing that compound and how it's set up I would've moved in when they left. Talk about the ideal place to get away from the madness of the world around us.      American Mythology is home to some unique and fantastic stories that you really ought to be reading.

The Monster Men: Heart of Wrath #3
Tumblr media
The Monster Men: Heart of Wrath #3 American Mythology Productions 2019 Written by Mike Wolfer Illustrated by Roy Allan Martinez Coloured by Periya Pillai Lettered by Natalie Jane This canonical sequel reveals terrors that will leave you with nightmares as rugged Townsend Harper, Jr. and beautiful Virginia Maxon face the legacy of her father's mad experiments into the creation of human life in mysterious chemical vats. But the creatures birthed by science are far from human, misshapen and monstrous beasts who hunger for human flesh. As they fight for their lives in the jungles of a secluded island hell, Townsend and Virginia find that their enemies include not only a horde of fiendish creatures, but a detachment of soldiers led by British Army lieutenant Arkwright, who has resumed Professor Maxon's doomed experiments to create his own army of beasts. Only one can possibly save Townsend and Virginia and stop the mad British officer's scheme... the fearsome creature of inhuman strength who answers to the name Number 13!  Fracking Covid made this take so long to come out but I will say this boy was it ever worth the wait!  The story Mike is weaving here using the characters from the original and then some is utterly spectacular.  The first page here is a wonderful bout of catch-up as Bulan, Townsend, wanders the underground tunnel system looking for Virginia. I am enjoying the way that this is being told.  The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information while working to move it all forward is presented exceptionally well.  I mean whether it’s narration, dialogue or through actions how we learn information is presented in a myriad of ways and it is fantastic plus it ties in tightly to the character development.  Which is spectacular by the way and there’s no greater moment to demonstrate that then Virginia doing what she did upon meeting Arkwright.  The pacing is great and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story with its twists and turns along the way it creates an incredibly dynamic tale. How we see the being structured and how the layers within the story continue to grow, evolve and emerge.  I like being surprised and there are a few moments when I was surprised genuinely so and those moments are what makes me love this series.  I do like how we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow. I am a huge fan of the work Roy Allan does on the interiors here.  I love the linework and how we see the varying weights and techniques being utilised to bring out this kind of attention to detail is stupendous.  I also like that Bulan is shirtless the entire time though I wish he had some hair on his chest or a least a happy trail.  That backgrounds are so integral to how we see the story and what they bring to the moments as well as the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story that we see is incredibly well rendered.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a remarkably talented eye for storytelling.  The colour work we see is phenomenal.  How the various hues and tones within the colours are ing utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows a true understanding of how colour works.  Plus i rather like seeing how it helps shape the musculature, Bulan, as well as seeing more than one technique in laying it down. This is so true to the source material that it just reads so incredibly well.  You forget in this modern world that once upon a time authors knew how to capture the imagination of their audience in some of the simplest yet complex ways imaginable and this creative team takes that inspiration and brings this to life in that vein.

Cueva del Mar is haunted by a curse that prowls the fog-shrouded coast of the seaside fishing village; whose residents have no choice but to offer human sacrifices to the unknown evil that appears on nights of the full moon aboard the Galleon of the Dead! But one man is determined to end the reign of terror, even if it costs him his own soul, and Zorro will stop at nothing to achieve his goal, even facing his most incredible foe yet- El Hijo del Muerte! Old-fashioned, haunted house terror meets lucha libre action and sword-swinging thrills in a Zorro tale you will never forget!    I have been a fan of Zorro for a large portion of my life thanks to my folks.  So I have followed his adventures through many incarnations throughout the publishing houses and I can say with 100% complete honesty that this is the best run I have had the pleasure to read.  While he was something of a highwayman and defender of the poor and the weak it only makes sense that we see him fighting supernatural elements here.  The natives of this land and the Spanish themselves have a long history of gods, creatures of myth and legend and witchcraft so to incorporate that into his adventures not only creates new avenues to explore but damn if it isn't fun too!    I love the way that this is being told!  The opening is sensational as it brings us the legend that surrounds the story.  This blends the hand me down story with events that may or may not have happened to create what we see happening here.  There is power in words and for those who believe, writers know this and so do readers though it’s not often acknowledged, and here we see the power that the legend has and it’s very, very frightening. The story & plot development we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is laid perfectly.  The character development is marvellous and to see two familiar faces and one whom I can only suspect alongside this rather large variety of new characters all of whom are being fleshed out beautifully.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the story it is easy to see how everything here works together to create the story’s ebb & flow.    The interiors here are bloody spectacular!  The linework is impeccable and how we see the varying weight being utilised to showcase the attention to detail that we see throughout is just plain mindbogglingly good.  Yes it has a traditional comic book vibe and feel to what we see but then to see the work in Don Diego’s clothing, which I now want to own, or how the buildings are shown, it just elevates everything we see.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a stellar eye for storytelling.  There is a creativity and imagination plus research into what the era was like that I appreciate so much, I mean that hillside with the homes built upwards sigh I wish I could live there.  The colour work is utterly fabulous!  There are different techniques utilised side by side so the gradation, the splatter or weathering look and the colour blocking make this look gorgeous.  The way we see the hues and tones within the colours utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work show a magnificent understanding of how colour works.    Folks let me stress to you how good this is!  The writing with it’s layering of subplots and the strength of the story alone make for some damn good reading.  This is what you need in your life right now, it’s a good solid escape from reality and this craziness we see in the world.
