Summer 2024 - Valtteri Bottas x Editor! Reader
Plot: Being able to work from home is the best thing for you and your travelling F1 boyfriend
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You’re job was literally the definition of perfect when it come to spending time with your boyfriend. He travelled a lot, like 24 times a year a lot and it was one of those things that most couples would be concerned that it would but a strain on the relationship but not for you and Valtteri.
You were an editor. That was how you put your job loosely when people asked what you do. When they deep-dived into what you actually did it was a half an hour conversation.
Primarily you were an editor for books, you edited and translated for a British Publishing House. Your work was remote only having to come into the office once every 3 weeks to just show your face and show your boss your progress.
You didn’t have … amazing grades leaving school only really English being your strong suit and became a freelance editor in photography while you lived with your parents.
You then found a love for music editing which really was just a hobby … but you ending up actually selling some stuff and making royalties on things you’d done for companies in your local area.
But when enough was enough and you decided to look for a steadier job you came across an Editorial Assistant Job. You swiped it up, having a love for literacy and reading so it seemed pretty perfect for you and worked your way up to editor.
Being an editor meant you didn’t have to ever really be in the office which to you was great, you could watch Scooby Doo reruns from your childhood whilst editing a smutty fantasy novel and had loads of free time for your side hustles in music editing and photography.
And it was even better when you met your Finnish hunk of a, now husband, then boyfriend.
You could travel to pretty much every race with him, spend time with him at his home in Finland and then spend a few days in the UK in the office for you. You had the healthiest relationship because of how often your routines worked together.
Currently you’d just landed in Baku, you’d done a very long stint, starting with being in England in the rainy weather day in your office talking to your boss and the author of the book you were currently working on. You’d spend the day going through the subtle changes you’d made and any errors you’d found. Your eyes were basically squares by the end of it.
One thing your husband loved about the UK was the pub atmosphere, so you met him at one close to your office building in London.
“Hey honey” you smile warmly at him, as he pushes forward the large glass of white wine he’d brought for you not so long ago as you could see the condensation on the outside of the glass.
“How was work?” He asked, Valtteri never really understood your job. He never knew what you were working on, or who you were emailing and on the phone too so it was always better to ask the broader questions.
“It was good, sooooo much progress on the book that I think I may be able to submit way earlier than the deadline and it be way better than Hallie anticipated” you grin, this project with the current book you were working on was something Valtteri did know about as you were so excited about it that you constantly talked to him about it.
“Yeah, that’s good, means we can spend some time in Amsterdam before Zandvoort?” He asks with a grin knowing you loved to go to the races a little earlier so that you could see more of the country that it was in, as you’d seen the tracks and the surrounding town or city so often you knew these like the back of your hand. So it was nice to explore other parts.
“Amsterdam sounds like fun! And yes I think I’ll finish reading the epilogue this weekend on the flight to the Netherlands, how does that sound?”
“Perfect as always” he replies cheersing you before kissing the side of your head lightly.
And then you found yourself in the both stormy and sunny weekend Zandvoort brought to you where you had a very amusing time editing a video of the Stake team members for their TikTok account that had amused everyone.
You’d only really done that because you had free time, your submitted the current project you were working on, and your boss at the publishing company hadn’t emailed you anything new so you decided to help admin edit some posts and photos to help get engagement. It was fun spending time with Valterri and the team just goofing around on Thursday before and intense weekend started.
You always loved the feelings of race weekend. Sitting in the hospitality while Valtteri and Zhou were in team briefings editing away whatever you felt like on your laptop before putting it away to watch the race. You loved the garage and talking to all the mechanics, you truly were part of the team.
After Zandvoort you spend 2 days there in the gorgeous town, talking bike rides through flower filled fields and taking pictures of cute little windmills and thatched roofs.
And then you’d ended up in the scorching heat of Milan and Monza where you’d gone shopping with Valtteri and he’d treated you to some really nice things in the fancy stores you’d never dream of affording.
You’d not actually been spotted by anyone which was strange as you always saw your husband as someone that has very notable features … ie his platinum blonde mullet.
“What about this, I think you could use a dress like this” Valtteri held up a green silk dress from Prada showing it to you and spinning it.
“And where would I wear that?” You laugh knowing it was far to fancy for anything you normally did.
“Mmmm anniversary dinner, a wedding, a award ceremony… end of season party with everyone, the 2025 car launch…” he grins naming all the various places.
You were the definition of a private wag. Your Instagram was private and had been for the many years you’d been with Valterri, so going to these events you always had to dress up very nice.
“I never usually wear green though” you comment looking at the deep emerald colour being presented to you.
“Mmmm but you’d look incredible in this” he says holding it up against your body just to double check.
“I mean you’d look more incredible with nothing but …” he teases and you immediately blush.
“Valtteri! You can’t say stuff like that here” you gasp looking around the shop before looking back at him. He’s just smiling and you lightly push his shoulder back.
“You can’t do that” you say shyly. He makes you go into the changing room to try the dress on for him before he ends up buying it for you.
But after the race you spend some time on Lake Como in a cute little AirBnB that was closer to Switzerland and went on a small little relaxation retreat. You guys went to the spa and went on a boat road on the lake and swimming in cold water.
And finally you made the long flight to Azerbaijan… you were pretty tired from all the changes, but with a new project from your boss you were able to stay busy.

London, Part 1: June 17-22, 2024
It's been a long time since I traveled alone without having work or family or a con or something to guide my agenda. I landed in London with tickets to a couple of shows, but otherwise just open-ended days I could spend as I like. This is my favorite way to travel, whether alone, with my partner, or with a friend. I love being able to sleep as late as I like and do whatever the mood strikes each day.
The day I arrived, I took it easy. I took a shower and a nap, then found a place with fantastic steak & ale pie for dinner and wandered to a local park that had a beautiful Japanese garden. I was surprised to find the sun rose at 5 a.m. and set around 10 p.m. each day - earlier and later than I'm accustomed to, even in the height of summer in Maryland.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another happy surprise were the intersex-inclusive pride flags prominently displayed when I entered my hotel, the Premier Inn (London Kensington - Olympia).
Tumblr media
Side note on Premier Inn: I stayed at several of them during my travels. They're a budget hotel chain in the UK that's very queer-friendly, clean, secure, comfortable, quiet, and I had very good experiences at every location.
Once I had a good night's rest, I asked myself: "What do I want to do today?" And the answer to that question was "Go shopping." I was keen to check out Camden Market, a sprawling collection of small, quirky shops and restaurants in London. One of my favorite clothing stores, Psylo, is there, and I wanted to buy myself a cool outfit. Which I did!
Tumblr media
I also got an artsy photo taken of my eyeball to gift to my partner.
I had lunch at The Cheese Bar. It was fantastic.
Tumblr media
There were some truly wild shops in Camden Market that were visually impressive:
Tumblr media
I had a ball exploring the shops and little eateries (I even got a Pasteis de Nata, a kind of custard tart I fell in love with in Portugal a few years back), and I could've spent an entire day there, but I was restless and eager to see more stuff, so I ended up wandering to the nearby London Zoo. It was a pretty sweet zoo with lots of different animals and habitats represented. There was a free-roaming tamarind inside the rainforest building, which was cool to see up close. (I have a video, but Tumblr limits you to uploading only one video per post, boo.)
I wandered through Queen Mary's Rose Garden after that, and stopped by the gorgeous Daunt Books, which specializes in travel books.
Tumblr media
London definitely has an amazing bookshop scene. The next day, I visited 10 more of them, focusing on occult bookshops. I found my books in stock at a few of them (squee!) and chatted with the owners as I signed them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was also delighted to see Pamela Colman Smith's fireplace at Treadwell's:
Tumblr media
And Gerald Gardner's original meeting place at the Atlantis Bookshop:
Tumblr media
I loved visiting these bookshops, especially if they carried my friends' books. It warmed my heart to see their books in another country.
I also teared up a bit visiting Gay's The Word, the UK's oldest LGBTQ+ bookshop, which was featured in the movie Pride (2014). I was thrilled to see they carried my friend Tamsin's book.
Tumblr media
I also checked out the Vagina Museum. I'd followed them on social media for years, so it was really nice to visit and support them in person. It's small, and in kind of a rough location, but it's worth a visit.
That day, I had the best fish and chips of my entire life at The Crown & Anchor, which I mistakenly thought was the pub in Ted Lasso when I found it on Google Maps (turns out they renamed a different pub with that name for the show). Holy crap, I want to eat that specific fish and chips the rest of my life. Every other time I had fish and chips on the trip, it failed to live up to this one. I got spoiled early. It was so buttery and crisp and utterly perfect.
The next big trip highlight was seeing a production of Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. It's a reconstruction of the Globe from the Elizabethan era. I sprung for a seat with a cushion(!) on the second level, and I had a great view of the fantastic production. I'm so glad I got to see this specific play, because it's my favorite. The cast was amazing, and seeing it in that theatre was a deeply moving experience, like stepping back in time.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
youtube
They also had one of the rare original folios of Shakespeare's plays on display:
Tumblr media
As if that experience didn't give my brain enough happy chemicals, afterwards I went to Dopamine Land. Dopamine Land is a temporary exhibit/experience available all over the world, where you wander through about 10 different rooms that stimulate and soothe your senses in different ways, including a giant, adult-sized ball pit. I really liked the first room, which was all mirrors and color-changing dangling lights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day, I visited Tate Britain with my friend Beckett, who has been an online friend for the past decade, and is both a fantastic musician in her own right and also a big supporter of my band, the Misbehavin' Maidens. She and her wife met me at the museum and we got to do one of the LGBTQIA+ tours. It was a super interesting tour focusing on a handful of pieces by queer artists, with queer themes expressed in the pieces. Apparently, each of the LGBTQIA+ tours is different, so I'd definitely go back and do it again.
Another highlight of Tate Britain was seeing The Lady of Shallott painting by John William Waterhouse, which I think was on the cover of one of my English Lit textbooks in college.
Tumblr media
After the museum, we went to a pub and I had my first Sticky Toffee Pudding! It was delicious - served with salted caramel ice cream. (I developed a preference over the course of the trip, though, to have it served with custard.)
Tumblr media
My first Tube ride made me giggle, incidentally:

A little bit of everything
As someone who's moved country, made a found family and then moved back home, I can empathize with these two A LOT.
Currently crying, so cry with me.
Farewell to my favs, Ted and Rebecca 💜
Rebecca stared vacantly out the large panel windows of her office. It was a sunny morning in late August, the UK was in a record-high heatwave, the air con in the Greyhound facility had broken last Tuesday, but all she felt was cold. She wrapped her arms around herself as she mindlessly watched training on the field below her with tired and unseeing eyes. It was as if all the warmth in the world had been sapped from her as soon as he had left and she didn’t know why or what to do about it.
“Rebecca…”
The call of her name brought her back to the present moment, but she didn’t turn her head or utter a reply.
“Rebecca…” It was Higgins’ voice that carried over to her.
“Hmm?” She finally emitted but without any real interest.
“Are you able to attend the 11am appointment with the Milk sisters?”
Milk sisters, Milk sisters, Milk sisters. Something was supposed to be funny about them but she couldn’t remember what. She closed her eyes and suddenly saw flashes of she and him in the pub. Memories hit of her trying her hardest to be a hard-arse and him breaking her down with his silly little puns. It wasn’t funny, but she was cracking up, her stoic facade fading, because it was him and he was perfect.
“Rebecca?” She wanted to hush Higgins, to tell him she was busy making mounds of the memories she’d made back when she thought there’d be years yet to make many more. Instead, she stood in silence and chased wistful affection.
“I’m calling Keeley,” Higgins eventually muttered resignedly.
Resignedly. Resigned. Ted had resigned. Ted had left Richmond. Ted had left her.

I can't fit the whole story in the tags so it's going here. Buckle up folks because I live for retelling my parents story.
OK so my mum finishes uni, decides she can't go back to her boring life in Cornwall so she dumps her boyfriend, packs up all her stuff and takes up a 9 month teaching post in Russia teaching English to Russian kids. There she gets into all sorts of shenanigans including a party at the Kazakhstan embassy, an infamous chicken incident and that one time she accidently spilt home brewed vodka and it was so toxic it stripped layers of metal off of the sink. Theres an issue with the building shes living in so she ends up relocating and has to move in with another one of the teachers, we'll call her R. Anyways she's living it up in Russia meanwhile my dad is stuck in a job he hates in Glasgow working for BT (which he only got through nepotism) but he's super into computers, super nerdy and has lots of similar friends including one guy, we'll call G. Mum and R's teaching post ends in Russia and they both go back to the UK with a deal that the first one of them to get a job in London will move there and they'll both live together, R gets the job so my mum once again leaves Cornwall for London. Back to Dad, he's still stuck in Scotland but his friend G has just met a really nice girl in London none other than R! So they meet, fall in love and decide to get married. At this wedding my mum and dad meet for the first time but it's not the love at first sight you'd think because THEY HATED EACH OTHER. Basically R and G thought they'd be perfect for each other, both a bit weird, edgy and interested in the same music so R and G tried EVERYTHING to set my parents up at the wedding, making them sit next to each other. But my parents, both happily single, didn't want to be set up so they pointedly ignored each other. According to my dad his first impression of my mum was "big hat" and according to my mum she was so drunk that day she doesn't remember meeting him at all. So yeah not the ideal first meeting BUT the day after the wedding R and G decide to go to the pub with their closest friends including my mum and dad. There my mum and dad kind of meet each other properly you know outside of the context of being set up and realise they do get on well, they can both drink a lot and they have similar taste in music and they kind of liked each other. BUT they live in completely different ends of the country it'll never work out, right? Well they swap emails and stay in touch, including a cute month of playing virtual poo sticks together (awwww) anyways my mum visits Scotland for a weekend, my dad comes down to London and eventually they decide my dad should just move in permanently. So my dad moves in with my mum, her sister and my mum's ex boyfriend (yikes) in London, all sorts happen lots of stores I've heard from parties they hosted. Anyways this is kind of the sad bit, my mums sister gets cancer and after a year of pretty horrible suffering she dies, instead of running out my dad sticks my mum (who he's only known for less than a year) because he's a lovely person. Then less than a year later my mum's dad dies of cancer, and my dad again supports her and is just generally a good person where most people would have freaked out. After they've been through all that they decide to get married, according to them they always say they got all the hard stuff out the way in the first 2 years of the relationship so anything they face now is pretty insignificant to the pain they faced then. So yeah that's their story I love it so much because its literally enemies to lovers, plus it just makes me so happy to retell it because at least in my friend group, my parents are one of the few still together, and people always ask me how they do it. :)
I watched When Harry Met Sally yesterday so now I'm curious how everyone's parents met. Any and all stories are welcome!

Is Manchester better than other UK cities for international students?
Manchester, a lively metropolis in the heart of the northwest of England, has become an increasingly favored destination for students from all over the globe. Having said that, could it be considered the best city in the UK? Let us look at the reasons that impel Manchester to be the choice for students from around the world.
Tumblr media
Academic Excellence
Manchester has what one may call the world's most prestigious universities, such as the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University. The University of Manchester, in particular, is the 27th in the Global QS World University Rankings 2024 and performs better than many institutions from other cities in the UK.
• 4 universities in Manchester
• About 100,000 students, with 40,000+ of them from other countries
• 25 Nobel Prize winners associated with the University of Manchester
Cultural Diversity
International students are integrated into society much easier in a multicultural city like Manchester, which is why it is one of the famous cultural centers at the international level too.
• More than 200 languages are spoken in the city
• Diverse ethnic groups, including the cultivation of cultural relations
• Annual cultural festivals and events reactivity on world cultures and holidays
Cost of Living
As opposed to London and some other of the leading UK cities, Manchester offers more affordable living costs but still with a focus on quality of life.
• The average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the city center is £758 (which is £1,752 in London)
• Monthly public transport pass: £68 (compared to £167 in London)
• The general cost of living is 35% lower than in London
Career Opportunities
With demand for job positions for local people and immigrants and media, digital, and creative industries in the city at an all-time high the city is a hub for a lot of international and UK-based companies. Considering these, we are setting up the Business Cluster and the Artificial Intelligence Center.
Manchester, with its abundant job market and the fact that it is a key hub for high achievements allows for a perfect stepping stone for higher viable walkability and urban transport connections provide the students with a friendly environment to get around by.
• Over 2,000 overseas companies have stationed themselves there.
• How is it fared by the visitors so far?
City Infra
The very simple and direct instructions will help the students find their way and they will take it. Manchester is an easy city for students to study in as it is a small city and it has a very good public transportation system that makes it easy for pupils to move around.
• Buses and trams cover the entire city.
• Manchester Airport: for as low as £ 20, you can get a direct flight to more than 200 destinations, both domestic and abroad.
• The downtown core is very close to a majority of shops and restaurants
Entertainment and Nightlife
The city offers a mix of excellence and fun by having the right blend of scholarly education and social activities for people of different backgrounds. The city is well equipped to cater to the varied needs of those who are attracted to different venues and instances, and the places in which they operate have been supplied with licenses.
• The city that has the entertainment license has more than 500 bars and other venues that are usually party spots.
• A cultural activity such as the museum-themed pub crawl can happen in Birmingham.
• The city site itself is a labyrinth of museums, galleries, and concert halls.
Green Spaces
Still, with the continent surrounded by plantations and the rural West Side once covered by gardens, the area guarantees opportunities for those who love nature. However, in the city, the outdoor space diversity is limited to impressive parks and the Peak District.
• 150 parks and green areas within the city.
• The city is located on the outskirts of a huge piece of land, it may be extended
Educational institutions, that is to say, are taking a proactive approach instigating various security measures targeted at safeguarding the lives of students from overseas.
Universities usually pay attention to the security issues that might be faced by international students with many colleges having 24/7 security patrols and support that is related to campus safety.
Support for International Students
Global students feel the care of the universities and social services are extended to them as well when they visit the university and local communities. Giving a detailed description of how international students are taken care of at the universities, Manchester is the best place you could choose. Universities in the city offer a complete and encompassing array of support services that have been designed specifically for the international student population.
There exists in each university a special office for the problems of international students such as accommodations, health, legal matters, etc as well as language proficiency help centers.
Research Opportunities
With the city's continuous upsurge in technology and scientific knowledge, students have fundamental and unsaturated scientific research facilities that Manchester gets from the city's innovation drive and marks it out for the many positive aspects. The expression "Golden Triangle" often heard in association with Manchester research, refers to one of the top places where research is conducted. The money was made use of for the establishment of research infrastructure facilities and this includes developing technology and implementing research related to several global industries.
City investment in technology and innovation is the key reason why the research prospects for students are unique in Manchester.
• Turnover ratio of 60-70%
• Feedback from students regarding their experience at LNTUC
Comparison with Other UK Cities
No doubt, all these cities have some features that attract individuals, however, the former one is blessed with all the best features.
On the one hand, London provides activities, travel possibilities, and education to students who have more than enough money to pay for the high living standards of London; on the other hand, they can undertake the same activities here in other U.K. cities, like the vibrant northern city of Manchester, for less money. A perfect blend of urban amenities and access to nature
Student Accommodation: Uninist
Uninist is simply one of the best housing providers in Manchester that are ideal for international students and are set up in a manner that allows them to live and study safely and comfortably. They assure the students that every apartment building they manage is of modern design with the best amenities and all are located within easy reach of the majority of universities. Uninist is near universities and is equipped with extensive amenities for the students to have fun. The intention is to make the journey of the students from home to Manchester and make the way they live in the city as good as possible. No matter the school, each property is a good part of the home.

Lights, Camera, Action! Stunning Locations in the UK to Shoot Your Next Masterpiece
Tumblr media
Looking to shoot a cool reel for your Instagram, a music video or even a film? The United Kingdom boasts a wealth of captivating landscapes and architecturally rich settings, making it a filmmaker's paradise. Whether you're crafting a heart-wrenching indie flick, a pulse-pounding music video, or a social media reel, the UK offers a diverse backdrop to bring your creative vision to life. For the history buff with a camera, Scotland's dramatic castles like Eilean Donan or Dunvegan provide a touch of medieval charm. Imagine epic battle scenes or brooding monologues set against the backdrop of these ancient fortresses, their windswept ramparts whispering tales of the past. London, a bustling metropolis, offers a different kind of grandeur. Iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge or Buckingham Palace can add a touch of quintessential British flair to your production. Explore the cobbled streets of Notting Hill for a quirky, bohemian vibe, or capture the fast-paced energy of Piccadilly Circus for a truly urban feel. The rolling hills and picturesque villages of the Cotswolds are perfect for a story that oozes quintessential English charm. Think thatched-roof cottages adorned with vibrant flowers, charming country pubs, and babbling brooks – a scene straight out of a Jane Austen novel. For a taste of the otherworldly, head north to the Scottish Highlands. The dramatic landscapes, with their rugged mountains, vast lochs (lakes), and sweeping valleys, are guaranteed to leave a lasting impression. Imagine a lone figure silhouetted against a fiery sunset over the Isle of Skye, or capture the mystical allure of the standing stones at Callanish. Wales, with its dramatic coastlines and moody mountains, offers a wild, untamed beauty. The dramatic cliffs of Pembrokeshire Coast National Park or the fairytale-like beauty of Snowdonia National Park are perfect backdrops for stories that evoke a sense of adventure and mystery. But the UK's beauty isn't limited to wide-open spaces. Abandoned industrial sites offer a unique, post-apocalyptic aesthetic. Picture a gritty music video set against the backdrop of a derelict steelworks, or a dystopian film shot in a forgotten warehouse.Don't forget the power of the unexpected. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden alleyways, quirky cafes, or colorful street art – sometimes the most captivating locations are the ones you stumble upon unexpectedly. So, grab your camera, unleash your creativity, and get ready to explore the UK's cinematic treasures. With its diverse landscapes, rich history, and vibrant culture, the UK is a filmmaker's playground waiting to be discovered. Right, so here I am at my desk, attacking this bag of allegedly "just like Fritos" crisps that some poncy YouTube influencer's been raving about from her swanky London flat. She's probably never even been to America, let alone developed the kind of religious devotion to corn chips that comes from growing up in a country where cheese can be sprayed from a can. And trust me, I know my processed American snacks - I practically mainlined Mountain Dew through secondary school before moving to the UK.
The crunch when I bite into one is properly offensive. It's like the crisp equivalent of Dick Van Dyke's accent in Mary Poppins - trying so hard to be American but missing by about three thousand miles. The flavour's completely mental, like someone's tried to recreate a Big Mac using only the power of their imagination and a spice rack they found in their nan's kitchen. Hold the corn, add a metric ton of whatever the hell that tang is supposed to be, and congratulations - you've just committed a crime against snack food.
I chuck another one in my gob because I'm a masochist, apparently. It's like watching someone butcher the American national anthem at a football match - you know it's wrong, but you can't look away. These crisps are the tribute band version of actual Fritos, all swagger and no substance, like a pound shop Elvis who's never actually heard "Suspicious Minds."
Oh, YouTube girl, you sweet summer child. You can't just declare something "tastes exactly like" when you've clearly been huffing British air too long. When you're craving a taste of home, these sad little pretenders are about as satisfying as using a chocolate Hobnob to scratch an Oreo itch.
I mean, if I wanted proper British food, I'd be down the pub right now, getting stuck into some chips that think salt is a spice and mushy peas that look like they've given up on life. But this American girl needs proper flavour - the kind that makes your tongue think it's having an out-of-body experience. These crisps? They're about as American as Queen Charlotte's knickers.
God save the Frito, indeed. And God save me from any more YouTube recommendations about "perfect dupes" for American snacks. Next thing you know, they'll be telling me Irn-Bru is "just like Dr Pepper." And then I really will lose my bloody mind.

Peak Indie Rock: 2006
Tumblr media
Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not by Arctic Monkeys January 23, 2006 / Domino
Could this be the greatest concept album about urban nightlife ever made? That distinction may go to the Velvets' more drug-centric first record but the Monkeys’ debut is definitely up there. Loaded with infectious hooks, propulsive guitars, and cheeky one-liners from Alex Turner, Whatever People Say took the UK by storm, becoming the fastest-selling debut album in British history. There’s a lot to love here, but closing track “A Certain Romance” is the high point. After twelve songs worth of reckless young pubbing and clubbing, barley twenty-year-old Turner offers an observational tear down of the dickhead tracksuit-clad local townies. But at the end, either out of acceptance or just plain exhaustion, he concludes, “they might overstep the line / But you just cannot get angry in the same way.” It’s a rare warm spot on the album (the mushy “Mardy Bum” is the other), and the perfect conclusion to the Monkeys’ brilliant debut. Everything All The Time by Band of Horses March 21, 2006 / Sub Pop
It’s hard to imagine, but going into recording their debut album, Band of Horses’ Ben Bridwell "really wanted an ELO-sounding record, with strings and keyboards and synths.” What they delivered instead, with the help of legendary producer Phil Ek, is something closer to the reverb-laden country/folk-ish rock of My Morning Jacket. Casual listeners like myself remember this album most for the all-time great that is “The Funeral” a song whose influence and pervasiveness extended into the 2010s. Cold War Kids notably ripped and slightly sped up its guitar riff for their 2015 hit “First.”
The Body, The Blood, The Machine by The Thermals August 22, 2006 / Sub Pop
According to The Thermals, this album “tells the story of a young couple who must flee a United States governed by fascist faux-Christians.” If that doesn’t seem like your particular brand of vodka, worry not—The Body, The Blood, The Machine need not be enjoyed as a concept album railing against the hypocrisy of the Bush-Cheney administration. Lead singer Hutch Harris’ nasally vocal delivery is a sure thing for anyone who’s ever enjoyed the Mountain Goats but felt they could benefit from a dash of The Exploding Hearts’ driving power pop. The Thermals weren’t the first punk band to make an ambitious concept album, they succeeded in delivering the best one of the 2000s (yes, better than American Idiot, which let’s be honest, kinda stinks). Furthermore, it set the table for future greats like Titus Andronicus’ The Monitor and Fucked Up’s David Comes to Life. There was a lot to be angry about in America in the mid-2000s. There’s even more to be angry and worried about today, but not enough young bands expressing it engagingly. The Body, The Blood, The Machine is exactly the kind of politically-charged, infectious pop punk album we desperately need in 2024.

I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass by Yo La Tengo September 12, 2006 / Matador Ah the mighty Yo La Tengo. The longest running act on this list, they are the only that could be considered part of the “old guard” of indie rock. Husband and wife duo Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley formed the band in 1984 with bassist James McNew joining in 1992. (To give you some perspective, second place Wilco formed a full ten years after YLT.) While peers like R.E.M. and Sonic Youth have long ago hung it up, Yo La Tengo has continued releasing fresh, adventurous, eclectic albums, and I Am Not Afraid of You may be the most eclectic of their vast discography. Call it their White Album, a record that delivers the goods from the krautrock-y nearly eleven minute opener “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind” to the NRBQ-influenced jingle “Mr. Tough” to the lovely string-laden Georgia ballad “I Feel Like Going Home.” It’s a kitchen-sink kind of album and it all works superbly…a sort of magic trick only the singular Yo La Tengo is capable of pulling off. Fun fact: The album’s title comes from a quote NBA player Tim Thomas said to his Knick teammate Stephon Marbury, “Everyone in this organization is afraid of you, but I'm not, and I will beat your ass.”
Ys by Joanna Newsom November 14, 2006 / Drag City
What a strange, mysterious, wonderful record Ys is. Five harp songs ranging from seven to seventeen minutes with heightened lyrics about pharisees, hairless blind cavalries, and Cosmia moths, this is not a particularly accessible album. It may seem better suited to falling asleep to on an hour-long flight than close-listening analysis. In truth, it’s great for both. And the beautiful orchestral arrangements provided by Van Dyke Parks make the daunting lyrical content considerably less daunting. Named after the mythical French city swallowed up by the sea, Ys initially appears to be an impenetrable mess of pastoral imagery set to Newsom’s gorgeous harp and fluttering voice, but closer inspection reveals deep layers of meaning. Take “Only Skin,” the album’s longest song and thematic centerpiece. According to Newsom, four of the album’s songs are about four major things that happened in her life in 2005, and “Only Skin” is “an effort to talk about the connections between the events.” The song addresses betrayal in a relationship, sexual desire, and healing while alluding to Sisyphus, Faulkner, and Percy Bysshe Shelley. Needless to say the song, like the entire album, is a rich text open to wide ranging interpretations.
Boys and Girls in America by The Hold Steady October 3, 2006 / Vagrant There are nights when I think Sal Paradise was right Boys and girls in America have such a sad time together So begins the third album by The Hold Steady, with frontman Craig Finn referencing On the Road and stringing a yarn about aimless young folks in the Twin Cities whose primary hobbies are drinking, screwing, and getting high. It’s just one in a discography full of songs about the very same subject. This band has gotten plenty of comparisons to Bruce Springsteen over the years, and while the Boss’ influence is definitely there, I see their closest analog as Steely Dan. Both made a career out of glorifying poetic losers, Finn and co just did it with triumphant yet cynical boozy rock while Steely Dan went the route of thinking man’s jazz rock. Side note: This is bad album art. Maybe not objectively bad, but certainly not right for the album. It’s too bright and romantic and joyful for what The Hold Steady do musically and lyrically. It feels better suited for Grouplove or I don’t know, Owl City. Don’t judge a book by its cover, but I vaguely recall seeing “Chips Ahoy!” on iTunes, looking at the digital artwork, and thinking “this is not for me.” Blood Visions by Jay Reatard October 10, 2006 / Fat Possum
Speaking of artwork, how’s this for an arresting cover? Guy with a shell-shocked look in his face, in nothing but briefs and covered in…red paint presumably? The title of the record is Blood Visions, so I’m willing to go with it being blood, a nice Carrie homage. Loud, fast, aggressive, and deliriously energetic, Blood Visions is the late great Jay Reatard’s garage punk magnum opus.

Week 3 in Prague: From Czech Cheers to English Beers
Ah, Prague, you've started to feel like home—albeit a home where I occasionally still get lost and mispronounce everything. But before we dive into the heartwarming tale of settling in, let's talk about my weekend escapade to London, because, why not add a bit of British flavor (if that even exists) to this Czech adventure?
London's Lessons: More Than Just an Accent Adjustment The Football Phenomenon: Attending the Fulham vs. Aston Villa match was an experience of a lifetime for me and a wild intro into British sports culture. Having played football (soccer) my whole life, it was always my dream to go to an English Premier League match. The unison of chants, the shared groans of despair, and the collective leap of joy with every goal—it's a camaraderie that transcends the game. And let's not forget the pre-game rituals in local pubs, where the air is thick with anticipation and ale. My takeaway? Football isn't just a sport in the UK; it's a religion, and match day is the weekly service.
The Nightlife Navigations: London's clubs and bars are a testament to the city's diverse cultural tapestry. Each venue, with its own vibe and tribe, felt like hopping from one continent to another. From the electric energy of Soho to the laid-back charm of Shoreditch, London after dark is a world unto itself. But here's a pro tip: keep an eye on the tube's closing time unless you fancy a midnight marathon back to your place. Craziest part about being there, however, was that by the end, we could not wait to come back “home” to Prague. Strange how we associate a country where we understand 99% less with “home”, over an alternative where we understand everything.
PRO TIP: Make sure to budget well (if you are on one). I don’t have a strict one but I did create a spreadsheet to see how much I spent in London, and it was a lot more than I expected. I got spoiled taking Ubers in Prague for like a couple of dollars everywhere, needless to say, that is not the case in London.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back to Prague: Feeling Like a Local (Sort of) Returning to Prague was like coming back to a familiar book where you're still discovering new chapters. The city's charm isn't just in its postcard-perfect Old Town; it's in the everyday moments and the small victories, like successfully ordering coffee in Czech without accidentally buying a farm animal. I've started to say "Dobrý den" (Good day) with less hesitation and "Děkuji" (Thank you) with more confidence. And yes, I still celebrate when the tram goes in the direction I intended.
Tip: Embrace the small wins. Every correct tram stop or successfully navigated grocery store trip is a step closer to feeling at home.
The Train Bar and an Unexpected Client Meeting: This week wasn't just about cultural assimilation; it also included a serendipitous professional twist. We visited the Train Bar—a quirky spot where the novelty of having drinks delivered by model trains never wears off. Seeing trains deliver our food and beer sparked the inner child in me which felt great. Earlier that day, we actually met with Operator ICT, a client for one of our class projects. Discussing project details that will take a whole semester to implement added a real aspect to school but surprisingly, it felt refreshing to actually work on something tangible.
Tip: When meeting with Czech people, a respectful "Dobrý den" can set a positive tone, no matter where you are. A lot of colloquial English phrases are not understood here so make sure to know your audience when you talk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Settling In: The Comfort in the Chaos As I navigate my third week, Prague's maze-like streets and tongue-twister language have started to feel less daunting. Finding a favorite café, jogging through Petřín Park, or just watching the sunset over the Charles Bridge, I'm reminded that home isn't just a place; it's the feeling of being part of something. Whether it's the historical allure of Prague or the bustling energy of London, each city offers a unique tapestry of experiences. Something else I have gotten used to is balancing going out on all nights of the week to make the most of your time, especially if you are traveling on the weekends. Since I was gone to London from Thursday-Sunday, it made my Monday-Wednesday a lot more important here, which meant going out those nights as well. Whether it’s a chill night out at a bar or an intense clubbing spree, learning to make the most of my moments here has been probably the biggest change here. Another thing my roommates and I had to change was our living habits. We have cleaners who come to our apartment every week to take care of the general cleaning the apartment needs, but ours was so trashed that even the cleaners had to report us to IFSA. It really sucks when your apartment is the spot to pregame and all the mess accumulates throughout the week. We received an email from the program advisors stating we had to be better about cleaning up our mess which was totally fair. Since then we’ve made a more conscious effort to take out the trash and clean dishes regularly rather than wait until the cleaners come to do it.
Tip: Make a local café or spot your "go-to." It's these little anchors that transform a city from a place you live in to a place you belong to.
Wrapping Up: From Prague to London and Back This week was about blending the familiar with the new, from the cobblestones of Prague to the double-decker buses of London. It's a reminder that studying abroad isn't just about seeing new places; it's about seeing yourself in new situations, growing, learning, and, of course, trying to pronounce "Pražský hrad" without sounding like you're casting a spell.
Until next time, keep exploring, keep learning, and maybe, just maybe, keep a Czech phrasebook handy.
Na shledanou for now, Rachit Khandelwal

Creating a Welcoming Environment: How to Make an International Flatmate Feel at Home at University
Tumblr media
University life often brings together students from various parts of the world. Data shows that, during the 2021/22 academic year, there were about 680,000 international students attending a university course in the UK. With so many bright minds flying over to our country each year, you’re likely to share your student flat in Leeds, Bristol, or Newcastle with an international flatmate at some point. And welcoming them to their new home away from home is not only an act of kindness but also a precious opportunity to appreciate different cultures and enrich everyone’s university experience. Abodus Student Living, an expert in providing homely student accommodation, shares tips on how to make international flatmates feel at home in a foreign environment. Prepare meals together One of the tastier benefits of sharing an apartment with a flatmate from abroad is that you can experiment in the kitchen. Aaron Kirkwood, Interim Head of Sales & Marketing at Abodus Student Living, said: “Cooking traditional dishes from each other’s country can be a delicious way to bond over good, wholesome food. “If you have a Chinese flatmate, you could tuck into some freshly-made dumplings together. Or if your housemate is from Italy, you could ask them to show you how to prepare an authentic carbonara. “Showing an interest in international recipes and sharing meals with your new international friends can work wonders on their wellbeing. In fact, social eating can help beat feelings of loneliness and isolation, which are not that uncommon when moving to a new country for the first time. “Likewise, you may want to consider putting on your own apron and chef’s hat. Dishing up a meal for your flatmates will make them feel welcomed and appreciated, and they are bound to be very grateful for it. “Be mindful, however, of their dietary preferences or restrictions. For example, some people may have cultural dietary requirements, so be sure to stick to them to enjoy a happy meal together!” Celebrate cultural festivals As well as connecting over yummy dishes, another trick to make your international flatmates feel at home is to celebrate their own cultural holidays. When moving to a foreign country, students may miss out on traditional festivities that are a special recurrence in their place of origin. And while they may not show it, they might feel sad about not being able to experience those unique moments with family and friends back home. So, if you are aware of any cultural festival coming up, think about organising your own celebrations. Whether it is the Brazilian Carnival or the end of Ramadan, making an effort to remember your flatmates’ cultural holidays will surely bring a smile to their faces. You can dress up in colourful clothes, set up a little banquet in your living room, or boogie to some traditional and folklore music. This is the perfect way to learn more about different cultures and traditions while also creating fun and unforgettable memories. Explore the local area Once you’ve settled into your new accommodation, it is always a good idea to spend some time exploring the city and local area. Visit the attractions, parks, pubs, neighbourhoods, and venues – and don’t forget to ask your international housemate to tag along, too! Moving to a new location is an exciting experience, but it can also be a bit daunting when you first arrive, and even more so if it is in a completely different country. So, this is a great opportunity to discover the local community with your new pal and find out what the town has to offer. As you navigate its streets and locals, you can point out supermarkets and popular restaurants to your international mate, making it easier for them to know what’s where. What’s more, you might want to organise a day trip to the countryside together. If your housemate has never been to the UK before, they might ignore the sandy beaches and rolling hills that make our country so beautiful and fascinating. Share study tips Education systems across the world operate in their own unique ways. From seminars and lectures to exams and grades, there may be a number of aspects that differ from other universities around the globe. To help your international flatmate ease into university life and hit the ground running with their academic duties, think about providing them with study tips and sharing useful resources. For example, if their first exam is a written assignment, you may want to recommend a handy guide or talk them through what makes a good essay in the eyes of a British teacher. You could also offer to check their drafts and highlight any obvious mistakes. Remember that, in most cases, English won’t be their first language, so there may be a few grammatical imperfections here and there. Helping out your flatmates with their coursework, where possible, will increase their confidence and allow them to perform to the best of their ability. Likewise, if you need any support or advice, don’t hesitate to ask for their suggestions and opinions, too – they will be more than glad to give you a hand! Be supportive and understanding Living away from your family home can take its toll on your mental health. While university life is usually busy, fun, and entertaining, there are moments when it all gets a bit much, and you start missing your parents, siblings, and friends. If you’re feeling this way, don’t worry – it’s completely normal! In fact, as many as 70% of freshers experience homesickness within a few days of joining university. Sometimes, these sentiments might be even stronger and more frequent for international students, as the distance that separates them from their families is way larger. So, if your flatmate is feeling under the weather, try to be supportive, patient, and understanding. Offer a listening ear and encourage them, if they feel like it, to let out their emotions. And if you miss your loved ones and being back home, don’t be shy and let them know. This way, they will realise that you are all in the same boat and that feeling homesick from time to time is perfectly fine!
