A Spooky Black Velvet Cake Recipe

Halloween lovers: black velvet. The cake layers are pitch black, super moist and decadent, naturally colored, and taste just like the delicious shell of an Oreo cookie! Paired with my favorite dye-free black buttercream recipe and lambeth piping, this black velvet cake is a real stunner. It’s elegant and a little eerie all at the same time, which makes it the perfect Halloween party cake!

Turns out that lambeth was the perfect choice to turn this black velvet cake into a spooky showstopper.

I used the black buttercream to fill and stack the cake, crumb coat it, and frost it with a smooth buttercream finish. After chilling the cake until the frosting was firm, I made a template for the garlands using this same parchment paper technique from my cherry chip cake recipe. Then, I used the following piping tips to decorate:

Wilton Tip 6B for the shell border around the bottom + top edges

Wilton Tip 4B for the shell border above the bottom 6B shell

Wilton Tip 104 for the ruffle garlands

Wilton Tip 32 for the overlapping shells below the garlands

100% dye-free layers of velvety black cocoa cake and black chocolate buttercream dressed up with lambeth piping for the perfect mix of elegance and spookiness.

Servings: 15 slices

Ingredients

Black Velvet Cake

2 Cups (265g) all purpose flour

1 2/3 Cups (340g) granulated sugar

2/3 Cup (80g) black cocoa powder

2 tsp baking soda

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 Cup (120ml) vegetable oil

2 large eggs, room temperature

1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract

1 Cup (240ml) full-fat buttermilk*, room temperature DIY recipe in notes

1 Cup (240ml) hot coffee or hot water

Dye-Free Black Buttercream

2 Cups (452g) unsalted butter, room temperature

5 Cups (600g) powdered sugar

1 Cup (112g) black cocoa powder**

4 Tbsp whole milk, room temperature

2 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/4 tsp salt, or to taste

Instructions

Make the Black Velvet Cake

Preheat the oven to 350ºF and prepare three 6-inch or two 8-inch cake pans by spraying the sides with cooking spray and fitting the bottoms with a wax paper or parchment cake circle.

Place all of the dry ingredients into the bowl of a stand mixer and stir on low for 30 seconds to fully combine them. Add the vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk and mix on low until just combined. With the mixer still on low, add the hot water in a slow stream, then turn the mixer to medium and beat until smooth, about 2 minutes. The batter will be very thin.

Pour into prepared cake pans no more than 2/3 full and bake for 32-36 minutes, until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting.

Make the Black Buttercream

In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, whip the butter on medium speed until creamy and light in color, about 4 minutes. Scrape down the bowl and paddle, then add half of the powdered sugar. Mix on low speed until just incorporated, then add the rest of the powdered sugar. With the mixer still in the off position, sift in the black cocoa powder and add the vanilla, milk, and salt. Mix on low until all ingredients are thoroughly combined, about 2 minutes, scraping down the bowl and paddle as needed.

The buttercream will look dark brown at this point, but the color will darken significantly over the next several hours. See the recipe notes for storage instructions if you're not planning on frosting the cake the same day.

Assembly

Once the cake layers have cooled completely, level them to your desired height. Fill and stack the layers with black buttercream, then crumb coat the cake with more black buttercream. Refrigerate the crumb coated cake for 20-30 minutes to let the frosting firm up.

To create the design pictured, use the black buttercream to create a smooth finish on the cake, then refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes. Use the rest of the black buttercream to create lambeth piping (feel free to use this tutorial as guidance). Accent the lambeth piping with round black sprinkles where desired.

Notes

*DIY Buttermilk recipe: add 1 Tbsp of white vinegar to a jar and top it with 1 Cup of whole milk. Stir and let sit for 15 minutes before using in the recipe.

**For the darkest black buttercream, you’ll want to use extra dark black cocoa powder. This can also be used for the cake portion of the recipe.

Why was the Buddha so respected?

One of the reasons was the power of his voice. His voice is recorded as "beautiful, sweet like honey, warm and graceful, resounding and clear."

He is also described as an individual who "speaks brightly, remarks brightly, narrates gracefully, talks clearly, expresses himself eloquently to make himself understood."

The Buddha called to anybody who visited him, "Welcome, welcome." He associated with people with friendliness, joy and gentleness.

He always politely greeted any person he encountered. He never greeted them in an unfriendly manner.

The Buddha is said to have been endowed with the 32 Signs and 80 minor characteristics of a Great Man. He was particularly good-looking and had a physical demeanour superior to that of gods, brahmas, humans and all beings. Naturally, he had a pure bright complexion, golden in colour. His body was unblemished and spotless. After attaining Enlightenment, his body started emitting rays of six colours, pervading all directions, resembling a garland of rays of several colours around him wherever he goes. He also had a lustre streaming forth as far as 80 cubits. Nara Siha Gatha, considered as the description of Buddha by Princess Yashodhara too paints a picture of a handsome man who stood out in a crowd- she likens him to the full moon amidst stars, outshining all.

The brahman Sonadanda described him as 'handsome, of fine appearance, pleasant to see, with a good complexion and a beautiful form and countenance'. These natural good looks were further enhanced by his deep inner calm.

A renowned Brahmin teacher named Sela, praised the Buddha with several verses.

"O Blessed One, your body's perfect, you're radiant, handsome, lovely to behold; golden colored, with teeth so white; you're strong. The characteristics of a handsome man, the marks of a great man, are all found on your body. Your eyes are clear, your face is fair, you're formidable, upright, majestic. In the midst of the Sangha of ascetics, you shine like the sun. You're a mendicant fine to see, with skin of golden sheen'

The canonical texts suggest the appearance of the Buddha to be extremely pleasant and serene.

Who is Mary Marvel?

First introduced in Captain Marvel Adventures #18 in 1942, Mary Marvel was the other half of Mary Batson, Billy Batson’s long-lost twin sister who was separated from him as a baby and then raised by the wealthy Mrs. Bromfield. Mary was created to appeal to the young girl comic audience for Fawcett Comics and was portrayed as the perfect 40s girl, even being physically modeled after Judy Garland. Rather than having the same gods and attributes as Captain Marvel and Captain Marvel Jr., Mary Marvel had the Grace of Selene, the Strength of Hippolyta, the Skill of Ariadne, the Fleetness of Zephyrus, the Beauty of Aurora, and the Wisdom of Minerva. The framing device sometimes used for her stories was a good deeds ledger in which Mary recorded good deeds that she did every day.

Christmas is my FAVORITE holiday, besides Halloween of course. So when I saw that @galaxy-mindsxx had this beautiful prompt list I knew that I needed to participate. So Lex’s 25 Days of Prompts is open! From December 1st to December 25th I will be posting prompts from this list with different fandoms. 1. Person A and Person B wanted to make a gingerbread house, except Person B keeps eating all the candy they both bought and Person A debates over whether or not they should buy more or just finish eating the gingerbread.

2. Person A is having a snowball fight with their friend/sibling and they accidentally hit Person B with a snowball instead. The main problem is that the snowball had a lot of ice in it and now Person A and B are at the hospital.

3. Person A and Person B got drunk at a mutuals Christmas party and they both thought it would be funny to “set up” everyone they thought looked cute together by moving the mistletoe around, except now everyone’s done it to them.

4. Person A watches their mutual friends teach Person B how to skate, to which they’re reminded of a baby deer. It’s from this where Person A realizes they may just be a little in love with Person B.

5. Person B catches Person A singing their favourite Christmas song and now Person B keeps trying to start a duet of “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” with A everywhere they go.

6. Person A works at one of the hot chocolate booths on Main Street for the towns/city’s Christmas Parade and they’re rather concerned for the fact that Person B has come up for their third cup of hot chocolate in the past half hour.

7. Person B’s parents wanted to host a Holiday Party but they left it up to B to decorate so they call Person A for help because B doesn’t even know how much garland is supposed to go on a Christmas tree.

8. Person A and B always argue, but they’re at a good friends Christmas party and they have to remain somewhat civil and—is that mistletoe???

9. Person A and B’s mutual friends organized a Secret Santa and Person B suspiciously got Person A. Their friends help B pick the perfect gift.

10. Person A and Person B (a mysterious stranger who looks incredibly sad and alone) are stuck in a snowed-in airport with both of their flights delayed.

11. Person A invited Person B over to watch Christmas movies ‘cause it’s officially socially acceptable to. Miraculously however, it’s the first snowfall of the year, and Person B can’t stop staring at their best friend.

12. Person A and B’s friends are all going to a ski lodge for the week. All is good and fun until everyone realizes that they all have to share rooms, and somehow, A and B got paired together.

13. They just released the new Christmas Rentals at Family Video and Steve is in charge of stocking them. But after seeing you outside trying to catch snowflakes on your tongue he accidentally knocks over a shelf. The stores a mess, but Steve only cares about talking to you. (Specific to Steve ‘cause I felt this was too cute of an idea to not do.)

14. Person B gets drunk and won’t stop singing Christmas songs at the top of your lungs. Luckily, Person A thinks they’re cute.

15. Person A and B’s friends take them sledding and since the two of them are both competitive af, they challenge each other to a sled-race.

16. Person A and Person B decide to bake Christmas cookies and they kind of have a “moment”. Person A gets nervous and throws flour at B’s face, triggering a food fight.

17. Person B’s best friend convinced them to write a letter to “Santa” of what they wanted for Christmas. Except, Person A now has B’s letter and…Person A is Person B’s greatest wish.

18. Person A invited Person B to help them decorate their tree and B’s shocked that A has this many ornaments.

19. Person A works as an elf for the town’s/city’s yearly out-door “North Pole Festival” and Person B keep smiling at A for a reason unknown to them.

20. Person A teaches Person B how to wrap presents. Correction: A teaches B how to wrap presents properly.

21. Person A and B attend their friends Christmas Party and the way B is looking at A makes them feel things.

22. It’s Person A and B’s first Christmas as a married couple, and Person A has a special surprise for B.

23. It’s Christmas Eve and Person A’s car breaks down in the middle of a snowstorm. Luckily, they’re practically in front of their best friends house/apartment. A decides to stay there the night and the two of them watch Christmas Specials all night.

24. Person A and B go Christmas tree hunting together. It’s fun, but extremely frustrating because Person B has their eyes on the biggest tree in the lot which A guarantees will not fit in their apartment. (Just imagine that scene in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.)

25. This Christmas marks Person A and B’s fourth anniversary of being together. At their Christmas Party, B plans on giving A a gift that they hope A will say yes to.

26. No one will take Person A to drive around and look at the Christmas light displays, so A asks Person B to come with. A spends the whole time looking at the displays, but Person B seems to be focused on something else entirely.

27. Person A brings Person B home for the holidays and B is panicking because they’re trying to make the best impression.

28. It’s a snow day, so out of boredom Person A and B decide to play a joking game of making the other blush/speechless with Christmas pick-up lines. Needless to say however, neither of them are joking.

29. Person B isn’t a huge fan of Christmas because they always end up being left alone. So, Person A goes all out to make sure this Christmas is the best.

30. Person A and B are neighbors and throughout the past week, every day, Person B asks if they can “borrow” Person A’s sugar; and A can’t tell if B is simply making a shit ton of cookies, or if they like A.

31. Person A needs a date to their family’s Christmas Dinner and Person B just happens to be at the right place, at the right time.

32. Person B tries to bake Person A’s favorite Christmas cookies, except B calls A over because B burnt them all and they don’t know what to do.

33. (This one is Steve specific.) It’s the first year that Hawkins High is trying out Candy Grams. You’ve gotten a few from your friends, however it’s the excessive amount of candy canes from a “Secret Santa” that truly confuses you.

34. Person A and B are hanging out when the power suddenly goes out and they’ve long since finished their hot-chocolates and they’re both cold so Person A offers to cuddle. For warmth. Obviously.

35. Person A and B are helping decorate their work place. Except the two of them get a little too carried away with the tinsel.

36. (Steve specific, again.) Steve and Robin work another job during the holidays to earn a little extra money. It sucks though because wrapping presents isn’t fun. Until you burst into the store on Christmas Eve with bags full of presents that need wrapping. Steve thinks you’re cute, though, so he doesn’t quite mind.

37. A friend of Person A’s family is having a Christmas wedding. Person A isn’t that interested until they spot a Groomsman (Person B) who has great hair and won’t stop drunkenly singing Christmas songs at the after party.

38. Person B finds Person A’s secret stash of Christmas presents. A lot of them are for B, and A can certainly tell Person B is having a hard time trying not to take a peek.

39. Person A and B’s friends arrange a get together with them at their local diner. Except, the two of them are there before them, and there’s a huge snowstorm that traps A and B and a few patrons in and so Person A and Person B have to try and amuse themselves.

40. Person A and B get slightly tipsy off the eggnog while they’re decorating A’s tree and some sober thoughts are shared through drunken words.

41. Person A and B are best friends who just happen to be neighbors. There’s a house decorating contest going on in their neighborhood, and the pair are determined to beat each other.

42. Sword-fighting is fun with candy canes…until someone’s gets stabbed in the arm.

43. It’s Christmas Eve, and as you read “The Night Before Christmas” to the party, Steve internally laments on how grateful he is to have you. (Steve specific.)

44. Person A and Person B’s families have been friends forever. A would always go to B’s house for Christmas Eve but the one time A and B got into a huge fight and thus the tradition stopped. Now, the tradition is being started up again and holy shit, when did Person B get hot?

45. Person A’s best friend rigged the Secret Santa so now they have to get B a present. The worse part? Person A has a huge crush on Person B.

46. Person A and B work as elves at “Santa’s Workshop” in the mall. It’s Christmas Eve and instead of cleaning up, A and B play around with the wrapping paper and bows.

47. It’s Person A’s best friends yearly Christmas Party and she just drunkenly dared A to kiss the cute, mystery stranger under the mistletoe by the end of the night. And Person B just so happens to be the cute, mysterious stranger.

48. Person A and B go on their first date to the skating rink. The only problem is that A is terrible at skating and keeps falling on their ass. B still thinks Person A looks cute though with snow falling on them.

49. Person A burns their tongue on hot chocolate and Person B’s first instinct is to spray a shit ton of whipped cream into A’s mouth to “soothe the burns”.

50. Person B got caught up with work on Christmas Eve and now there’s a possibility they won’t be home in time. But it doesn’t end up as bad as A thought. Actually, it ends up being one of the best Christmases of their life.

How To Make A Big Candy Buffet On a Small Budget

Including a candy buffet or dessert table at birthday parties and weddings has become the standard. It makes for a stunning statement piece in the room and gives your guests somewhere to go while you get the rest of the party started.

Once you start planning it, however, you realize how expensive it can be when you factor in all of the candy you want. It is possible to make your own candy buffet and to stay within budget, it just takes a little extra planning and know-how.

And that’s where we come in. Today, we’re giving you some helpful tips on how to plan stunning candy buffets or dessert table when you’re on a tight budget.

Put Big Candy in Big Jars

The picture above is a perfect execution of a budget-friendly candy buffet. If you’re looking to save money, you probably don’t want to fill up one of your biggest jars with a candy like M&M’s or Sixlets. They’re too small and you’ll need tons of them to make the jars look full.

Michelle from Michelle’s Party Plan It used big gumballs and big gummy candies to take up more space in the big jars. If you’re looking for unwrapped, colored bulk candy wholesale, try Jordan Almonds instead of M&M’s. The bigger candy-coated candy takes up more space in the jar and you get a similar effect as the M&M’s. Plus, Jordan almonds are $32 for 5-lbs, whereas M&M’s are $58 per 5-lbs.

You can also fill large jars with tall candy like Pixie Stix, Twizzlers, or rock candy. Just make sure that there’s something decorative at the bottom so the candy is easy to reach for guests. The picture above is a great example of stacking tall candy so that it’s reachable for your guests. The entertainer here used what looks like white sugar (very clever!) to fill the jar up. Conversely, fill small jars with the smaller or more expensive candy. Your guests won’t take as much candy from the small jars…if they’re respectable, that is.

Use Other Snacks

Expand your candy buffet to include other desserts or snacks and you’ll save more money. You can buy some pretzels from the grocery store and dip them in chocolate, if you’re willing to spend some extra time. You can also make a big batch of something (popcorn, chocolate covered pretzels, donut holes) and split it up into individual servings, like the picture above.

The person who hosted this baby shower did a great job making this buffet look amazing, but probably didn’t spend much. She made a stunning backdrop using paper plates, rationed out popcorn and pudding, and even divided bubble bath into small individual gift jars. A little innovation goes along way for dessert buffets.

Decorate Wisely

Don’t discount the dollar store when it comes to candy jars and decor. When you’re on a budget and planning a candy buffet, the dollar store should be your first destination. Places like the Dollar Tree have tons of neutral and simple decor; and if they don’t have your preferred color, paint it! The party above features plastic dinosaur toys, a dinosaur mask, and wooden block letters all spray painted gold to match the girly, glam version of a dinosaur-themed bridal shower.

If you’re looking to fill up blank space on your table, consider making a DIY centerpiece like a big framed picture of the bridal couple or a floral arrangement. If you’re skipping the centerpiece, focus your attention on making a killer backdrop. It can be as simple as taping some balloons to the wall or tying some fabric scraps together to match your color scheme. If you don’t have a backdrop, your candy buffet will look empty and might “disappear” against the wall. Your best bet if you don’t have it in your budget to make a backdrop? Place your buffet in front of a window or an accent wall.

Take Advantage of Free Resources

The Internet has tons of free resources for parties and weddings, so don’t waste your time or money making your own labels and decorations. There are tons of free printables on party planning sites like Catch My Party, I Heart Naptime, and tons of other blogs.

All you need to do is download the printables, customize the labels to what you have on your dessert table, and your candy buffet is guaranteed to pack a big punch.
