Lucy Percy Hay, Countess of Carlisle (1599-1660), Van Dyck c1637, private collection.
Her father was the so called “wizard Earl” Henry Percy Earl of Northumberland and her mother Dorothy Deveraux one of the Earl of Essex’s sisters. Dorothy in turn was the daughter of Lettice Knollys, who was herself in turn the daughter of Catherine Carey the daughter of Mary Boleyn - sister of Anne Boleyn and aunt of Elizabeth I - and maybe Henry VIII himself depending on if you think he was Catherine Carey’s father or not.
Despite this illustrious linage, Lucy’s childhood was overshadowed by her fathers incarceration in the Tower of London for his alleged role in the gunpowder plot, and the collapse of her parents marriage. At age 17 Lucy eloped with James Hay, Viscount Doncaster, a member of James Is bedchamber and minor favorite who was twice her age and a widower with children. Although she claimed to be in love with him, it’s just as likely Lucy saw James Hay as her ticket out of the tower and to court.
Around 1620 it’s believed that Lucy became lovers with the then Marquis of Buckingham, with her husbands approval - George was the key to the king and to favors. The gamble paid off as the Doncasters were created Earl and Countess of Carlisle about this time. Lucy and George would remain involved until his death in 1628. Her husband James died in 1632 leaving Lucy a wealthy, well-connected, child-free widow; and a major figure at Charles I’s court as the sometimes ally, sometimes frenemy of the Queen. She was said to be one of the great beauties and wits of the era, and her salon was a major hub of political networking and literary patronage. She was also, despite her reputation for libertinage, something of a puritan.
The above painting was a gift for another rumored lover; Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Stafford, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
During the civil war Lucy developed a reputation for playing both sides for the middle, eventually returning to the tower for involvement in conspiracies against the newly established commonwealth. She died of a stroke in 1660, her days of glory long behind her.
There has never been a proper biography or study of Lucy and her career, despite being one of the major political influence brokers, intelligence agents, and cultural patrons of the age. Instead, Lucy is mostly remembered today as the potential inspiration for Milady de Winter from The Three Musketeers, along with a number of other salacious stories of varying accuracy, such as supposedly informing the five MPs of their impending arrest in 1642. Due to the fact few of her papers have survived, getting to the woman behind the sensational legends is not easy.

Peter Davis (October 25, 1887 - April 29, 1971) is known as the music teacher of Louis Armstrong. He was born in New Orleans. The census data indicate that his father listed himself as a widower and a day worker.
He was first introduced to music training when he took lessons from the celebrated music teacher William J. Nickerson. He learned the piano and the cornet. By the time he was an adult, he was training other students. His music teaching career began around 1912 when he was hired as the warden at the Colored Waifs’ Home for Boys soon after became the director of music. Most of his students were given lessons on the cornet or the trumpet. Many more took lessons on a variety of instruments, including the piano, clarinet, bass tuba, saxophone, snare drum, bass drum, and trombone.
He never became as well-known as his most famous student, Louis Armstrong. In nearly every article and book published on the life of Armstrong, prominent acknowledgment is given to him, who had the ingenuity to recognize the innate talents of young Armstrong. Some of his other students included Dave Bartholomew, Henry “Kid” Rene, Willie Humphrey, Percy Humphrey, Danny Barker, Chester Zardis, and, Robert Mikell.
He was one of New Orleans’s better-known musicians from the WWI era to the 1960s. He played numerous instruments in a variety of venues across the city and always seemed busy with engagements until his retirement in 1949. Upon his retirement, he volunteered as a scoutmaster in the African American community, leading scouts on camping and hiking trips through the woods in and around New Orleans, teaching them survival skills during the mornings and in the afternoon, and offering music lessons to the interested boys on an instrument of their choice. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Michael Bolotin (born February 26, 1953), known professionally as Michael Bolton, is an American singer and songwriter. Bolton performed in the hard rock and heavy metal music genres from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, both on his early solo albums and those he recorded as the frontman of the band Blackjack. He became better known for his series of pop rock ballads, recorded after a stylistic change in the late 1980s.
Bolton has sold more than 75 million records, and recorded eight top 10 albums and two number-one singles on the Billboard charts, as well as winning six American Music Awards and two Grammy Awards. He has performed with artists including Lucia Aliberti, Patti LaBelle, José Carreras, Tony Cetinski, Ray Charles, Celine Dion, Plácido Domingo, Renée Fleming, Wynonna Judd, B.B. King, The Lonely Island, Luciano Pavarotti, Percy Sledge, and Zucchero.
Early Life
Bolton was born in New Haven, Connecticut. His father, George Bolotin, was a local official in the Democratic Party, and his mother, Helen, was a homemaker. He has a brother, Orrin, and a sister, Sandra. By age 7, Bolton was able to play the saxophone. He began writing songs at age 9. At age 14, he formed a group, the Nomads, that were signed to a singles contract by Epic Records when Bolton was 16. With his parents' permission, he dropped out of high school and left home at age 15 to travel cross country along U.S. Route 66 and pursue music full-time. He took odd jobs, including as Paula Abdul’s babysitter.
Hard rock and songwriting
Bolton began recording in 1975 at The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This first album was self-titled using his original family name of Bolotin. Early in his musical career, he focused on hard rock, with his band Blackjack once opening for heavy metal artist Ozzy Osbourne on tour. It was rumored that in 1983 Bolton auditioned for, but was denied, the lead vocalist position with Osbourne's former band, Black Sabbath. Bolton later stated this was untrue, saying "That rumor about me auditioning for Black Sabbath was only a rumor, I don't know how on earth it started." In 2015, Bolton's 1980 song "Maybe It's the Power of Love" with Blackjack was sampled by rapper Kanye West for his song "Never Let Me Down".
After anglicizing his family name to Bolton, he gained his first major hit as a songwriter, co-writing "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" for Laura Branigan, previously best known for singing the pop hit "Gloria". Narrowly missing the Top 10 on the US pop chart, Branigan took the song to number one on the Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks in 1983. The two sought to work with each other again, and their next collaboration was when Bolton co-wrote "I Found Someone" for Branigan in 1985. Her version was only a minor hit, but two years later, Cher resurrected the song, and with it her own singing career. Bolton co-wrote several other songs for both singers. Bolton recorded his own rendition of "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" in 1988, which reached number one on the Hot 100.
Tumblr media
Bolton achieved his greatest success as a pop singer in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He performed songs written by or co-written with major hit songwriters of the era including Diane Warren and Desmond Child (as well as "Steel Bars" penned by Bolton and Bob Dylan). but also had several hits that were remakes of 1960s soul classics. One of his first major hits was his 1987 interpretation of the Otis Redding classic "(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay". Redding's widow, Zelma Redding, said she was so moved by Bolton's performance "that it brought tears to my eyes. It reminded me so much of my husband that I know if he heard it, he would feel the same." Always interested in soul music and Motown classics, in 1989, Bolton released a cover version of "Georgia on My Mind" by Ray Charles, with which he had another hit. In 1991, Bolton released the album Time, Love & Tenderness which featured his Grammy Award-winning cover version of "When a Man Loves a Woman", first recorded by Percy Sledge.
From 1987 to 1995, Bolton had four top ten albums and seven top ten songs in the U.S. He had even greater success on the adult contemporary chart with where her had a string of 14 consecutive top ten hits including eight number ones.
Bolton also had 12 top ten songs in Canada, but was less successful outside of North America with four top ten singles in the UK and a few others in various other European countries.
Bolton's work during the period has been criticized for being derivative, and in 1992, the Isley Brothers filed a lawsuit against Bolton, claiming his 1991 hit song "Love Is a Wonderful Thing" plagiarized their 1966 song of the same name. A fifteen-year legal battle resulted in a $4.2 million payment to the Isleys from Bolton, his co-writer and their publisher. A previous similar lawsuit regarding "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" had been settled in Bolton's favor.
Tumblr media
Bolton's last Top 40 single in the US was the 1997 hit "Go the Distance" (from the Disney animated movie Hercules), which peaked at No. 1 on the US adult contemporary chart. He hired conductor Larry Baird, the orchestral musical director, conductor, and arranger for The Moody Blues, Three Dog Night, and Al Jarreau, for his 2001 tour.
Later Work
Bolton's popularity declined in the late 1990s, but he continued to have adult contemporary hits through the mid-2000s. He released albums every year or two through the mid-2010s. His album Only a Woman Like You was released in 2001 with the title song co-written by Shania Twain. In 2006, Bolton and Nicollette Sheridan, his fiancée at the time, sang a duet, "The Second Time Around", for the album Bolton Swings Sinatra. For Over the Rainbow, an album which was recorded in five days, Bolton recorded the song "New York, New York", which was also on his Bolton Swings Sinatra album. This was for an episode of the TV series, Challenge Anneka. The proceeds from the album went to children's hospices across the UK. Bolton released his album One World One Love in the UK on September 21, 2009. The first single, "Just One Love", was released one week earlier. In June 2011, Bolton collaborated with Indian musician A. R. Rahman for a song recorded for Gems – The Duets Collection. In 2013, Bolton released the album Ain't No Mountain High Enough: A Tribute to Hitsville U.S.A., which featured duets with Kelly Rowland, Melanie Fiona and Orianthi.
Tumblr media
In addition to his recordings, Bolton has continued to perform publicly. In March 2007, he toured South Africa for the first time, where he was the headline act at Jacaranda 94.2 FM's two-day concert. He performed a duet entitled "Il Mio Amico" with the Italian singer Anna Tatangelo at the Sanremo Music Festival 2008. The song was originally sung by Tatangelo alone, but the duet version contained English lyrics as well.
In May 2011, Bolton was featured as a guest vocalist in The Lonely Island's song "Jack Sparrow" on their Turtleneck & Chain album. His performance with the comedic hip-hop trio focused on his (intentionally) off-topic chorus and miscommunication with the group, and the video featured him dressed in costumes as Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Forrest Gump, Erin Brockovich, and Tony Montana from Scarface.
Bolton has also performed his music in other media. In August 2006, Bolton he one of Lucy Lawless's duet partners on the Fox Broadcasting Company network's program Celebrity Duets, which Simon Cowell's Syco Productions Company produced for the network. In late 2013 and early 2014, he appeared in Honda commercials in which he sings. In 2015, he sang on an episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver concerning the IRS. In the same year, he performed in a Pizza Hut commercial singing Jingle Bells while a family opens up their pizza order. Bolton contributed "Upbeat Inspirational Song About Life" and its reprise to Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, which was released on July 27, 2018. He also voices the Tiger that sings the song in the film. In 2021, he guest-starred in season six of The Masked Singer where he sang Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Faith Evans as "Skunk". In 2023, he competed in season nine as "Wolf". After he was eliminated on "DC Superheroes Night", he took the time to promote his upcoming album and did an encore by performing "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You". Bolton competed in the American Song Contest, representing Connecticut and performing the song Beautiful World, with his first performance in the first week, on March 21, 2022. He made it to the finals, finishing in seventh place.
Film Career
Bolton has made several cameo appearances in feature films and television, usually appearing as himself, such as in Meet Wally Sparks (1997), Two and a Half Men (2012),and The Nanny (1998).
In September 2010, Bolton was a contestant on the 11th season of Dancing with the Stars. He and his dance partner Chelsie Hightower were the second couple to be eliminated, on September 28, 2010.
On May 15, 2018, American Dream: Detroit, a documentary produced by Bolton, premiered in the Redford Theatre. Bolton loves Detroit and wanted to highlight its economic comeback. The documentary features interviews with several business moguls, singers and other Detroit natives, including Christopher Ilitch, Jerry Bruckheimer, Francis Ford Coppola, Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, and Alice Cooper.
Although he has been rumored to have appeared as an extra in Dune (1984) as a "spice-eyed" drummer, Bolton has stated in interviews that it is not him.
Tumblr media
Personal life
Bolton describes himself as a "rebel Jew". He was raised in a liberal family, describing his childhood home as decorated with both a Hanukkah menorah and a Christmas tree. His grandparents kept a kashrut household. He left Hebrew school at age 12 when his rabbi forbade him from returning unless he stopped joking around. Nevertheless, Bolton became bar mitzvah at age 13 and maintains some beliefs in Judaism.
Bolton has been a vegetarian since 1970.
In January 2013, Bolton published an autobiography, The Soul of It All: My Music, My Life.
Bolton lives in Westport, Connecticut.
Relationships and Family
Bolton was married to Maureen McGuire from 1975 to 1990. They have three daughters together, each born two years apart: Isa, Holly, and Taryn. He became a grandfather for the first time in October 2010, through his daughter Taryn. As of February 2019, he has six grandchildren.
Bolton was introduced to actress Nicollette Sheridan in 1992 by adult contemporary/jazz saxophonist Kenny G. Bolton and Sheridan dated until breaking up in 1995. They reunited again in 2005, becoming engaged in March 2006, However, it was confirmed in August 2008 that they had broken off their engagement.
Since 1975, Bolton has released 24 studio albums and 35 singles. Nine of his singles have peaked at No. 1 on either the Billboard Hot 100 or the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts in the US.

Love can save people. It can redeem.
It can also damn you and others.
If anything, Delilah is a cautionary tale on how you could love someone so much, you never think twice about damning the entire world in the name of it, and that it can be so easy to never stop.
As you say, many others could have gone down the same road as Delilah and Sylas. And yet they didn't. Because they chose to stop and reflect before it was too late.
But because she never did, all that waited Delilah was perpetual defeat. It doesn't matter if she's got all the time in the world. Because no matter what, she will never win.
It's a lesson that she will never learn.
I mean…one can I suppose take that message from the story of Delilah, but that’s not really what I was getting at. I am not personally saying “oh how sad for her!”; I am saying this:
Tumblr media
As you say, she’s a dark mirror - a living example of how it would have been so very easy for so many heroic characters to be just a touch less scrupulous. She serves to show just how easy it would have been for Percy to say “well, I guess what’s done is done” re: guns; for Vex to give into Saundor or for her justified hunger and self preservation to calcify into avarice; for Fjord to have Jester take them and theirs to the Feywild and leave the Menagerie Coast to drown; for Caleb to go on his Assembly Murder Spree and use the T-Dock; or, a millennium before Delilah existed, for the Ring of Brass to have cut line and teleported or flown out rather than mitigating their damage. And yet none of them did, because they not only loved their partners and friends; they loved their homes and the world. So our post-Divergence era heroes are happy, and even amidst the Calamity the Ring of Brass endures...and Delilah was deservedly hoisted by her own petard into the mind palace of a weird girl who likes rats.
Delilah is compelling not because others would do what she did - in fact, everyone I mentioned demonstrably did not. She is compelling because she didn’t know when to stop, and it’s her own fault. It’s fitting and, at least to me, pretty hilarious, that Delilah never wins; with any luck she’s been swept under whatever cosmic rug Laudna’s resurrection achieved and we never hear from her again. She played stupid games and she won stupid prizes. In the same way that I am most interested in heroic characters who were asked who they were in the dark and in doing so realized they were, at heart, not the monsters they could have been, and dragged themselves out, I am bored stiff by the “oh the villain just needed LOVE and they would have been good” school of thought.
I want a villain (like Delilah, or Avantika, or Lucien) who was shown an off-ramp, and each time slammed down on the gas, and then crashed into a wall, and then exploded. And I especially want a villain like Delilah who had love, and who didn’t need to choose between love and power, and who managed to still take truly the most garbage third option possible.
(Relatedly: this is also why all concepts of Imogen making even the tiniest deal with Delilah to save Laudna, let alone this become a full corruption arc for her, absolutely suck. Why on Exandria would one ever willingly make a deal with the tattered, miserable, widowed cringe fail patron of Love Isn’t Enough, Actually? This is D&D: there are far better fiends and horrors available.)

OOF THE TITLE–i have a hunch what’s coming but AAAH let’s do this. (future me here: lmao okay, it got lengthy at the end bc I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS)
“Did I get trampled by a horse while sleeping?” you reap what you sow Cherie, you reap what you sow. “No, because I am dying—” // “Don’t joke about that.” oh no :// Anthony still has those nightmares sometimes doesn’t he? gosh i feel like he needs to talk to Cherie whenever he gets those. make him feel safer.
“I will never drink again.” // “You know, I’ve heard your brother say that multiple times and you’re both liars.” LMAO Anthony has experience taking care of both siblings being hungover now. “Cecily doesn’t need the stress of thinking her sister has been in a carriage accident, Y/N.” good point Anthony, always the logical one alskalsk Cherie has all the dramatics taken care of. “Raw eggs and garlic.” the perfect mixture of salmonella LMAO. but no, Anthony taking care of Cherie while hungover is just the cutest and sweetest thing in the world.
“Remind me again why we’re doing this?” meanwhile in the other house, Percy is already complaining why they invited Anthony too when it should have been fine if it was just Cherie LMAO. i can hear him grumbling from miles away. “You can say that at my funeral after I get poisoned at tonight’s dinner and leave you a widow.” LMAAAAAAAAAAAO i can definitely see Percy already paying Aunt Lavinia and begging her to do something about this alskalks. like this whole scene with Anthony and Cherie i am so so sooo sure the mirror of it in the Avon house is Percy complaining to Aunty L. it’s just too funny to picture it like that lol.
ah we’re still at the boy or girl debate i see lmao. i can’t wait for them to find out it’s both. “Nah, you should probably save that list for yourself for the near future.” KENNETH LMAO NOT IN FRONT OF PERCY’S SALAD. he’s not helping Anthony’s case here alkslaks that chaotic energy i love. “Well, you told me to dance with him—” // “You’re the architect of this union when you think about it.” BWAHAH ELIAS. YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW MY GUY. is that a theme here alskalsk i feel like that’s the theme of this chapter lmao. “None of this would’ve been possible without you.” LMAO I LOVE THIS. Elias is just rethinking his life choices now ALSKALSK he planted the seed, now he’s eating the fruit, or in his perspective, the weed lmao. dear lord this dinner alksdsdbdlaj the chaos. “We all know that’s a lie Ken.” BWAHAH WAIT DOES CECE KNOW?? pls i loveeeee. i need more of Cece teasing Hugh and Kenneth every single chance she gets. but lmao, Cece has such a good point everyone in this family does fall in love head first and so so fast. the evidence is astounding like. it’s in their blood LMAO “Don’t worry, you can ask Benedict about what I was like when I was so much as in the same room with you.” i wonder how many times Benedict has rolled his eyes during those times. world record if you ask me.
“Oh my, I hope I’m not interrupting.” WHAT THE FUCK IS HE, THE FUCK?? WHY WOULD HE JUST BARGE IN??? he’s already getting on my nerves UGH. “a look that you could only describe as anger crossing his face” HE HAS NO RIGHT TO BE ANGRY FUCK YOU. god he’s such a FUCKING ASSHOLE UGH. why is he so fucking smug about this??? he’s taunting them and he’s fucking enjoying it. this fucking vile, poor excuse of a human. can someone pass me that knife, i won’t do anything bad i promise.
“grabbing the knife on the table” OMG ALSKALSK GO CHERIE. LMAO i actually didn’t expect to predict that lmao. “I’ll carve your fucking heart!” OOF!!!! i’m pretty sure in that era, that F-bomb is more than just a bomb, it’s more a nuclear explosion especially when it’s Cherie saying that lmao. i mean look at their reactions. my god this is intense.
“What do I care what you want?” sigh….she’s misplacing her anger here and ugh. trust me, i get her. and i’m all for it, she has every single right to be angry and i would’ve been all for it if she got just a tinyyyyy stab there. BUT, she’s aiming it at the wrong direction now. and sadly, this is not going to end well if she keeps going. as much as i have faith in Anthony’s patience, i honestly am not sure how long he’ll be able to take being Cherie’s punching bag if ever she gets like this again. bc that’s not okay, even if she’s angry, and even is she’s hurt and all, it still won’t excuse it If And When™️ (bc i have a bad feelings it’s bound to happen) she says something bad and hurtful all fueled by anger. i’m sure Anthony will be able to understand the situation or why she’d snapped at him but, i mean, Anthony has a lil bit of a temper and stubbornness of his own. we’re all human after all, we can only take so much and control our emotions to a point. everyone has limits. and just bc the words are said due to intense emotions, that doesn’t mean they won’t hurt.
“It’s not your place to give me orders. Nor will it ever be. Keep that in mind the next time you have the audacity to assume otherwise.” ….Sigh™️ i’m back at it again with my sighing LMAO. AND AND i’m pretty sure i’m going to bring back the whole Communication Is Key™️ again bc let’s be real, it’s will solve all their problems since chapter 1 lmao.
okay, thoughts have be thunk. i’ll be honest, i didn’t interpret what Anthony said as ‘giving her orders’ bc i mostly saw it as him telling her she can’t go back bc she will do something she will regret. in a way, yeah, i understand why Cherie saw it that way but honestly, what was Anthony supposed to do? i feel like either choice he made, he’d lose. it’s another case of choosing the lesser evil, which in this case had been obvious enough and actually has a VERY big difference in consequences.
stopping her and taking her out of the room led to them having this argument, their first fight. which could’ve been handled better i’m sure but everyone’s shocked, everyone’s frustrated and angry. Cherie is full of so many emotions all at once, i mean this is the man who ruined her and her mother’s life. and then we have Anthony getting frustrated bc he honestly can’t see why she’s now angry at him when he technically didn’t do anything wrong. and i can’t blame him for that either bc i will get to that in a sec. so now she’s angry at him, and everything is tense between them. but it’s much more manageable and fixable once they sit down, all calm and clear headed and have a conversation like Mature Adults™️
but the other way, say Anthony let her hurt that man, get her (earned) revenge. one: it would NOT make her feel better and she will realize that once it’s too late. two: Anthony will take the blame of the whole ‘why didn’t you stop her’ not only from himself, but everyone else around them. granted, Cherie isn’t his to control nor is she his responsibility in a way, but at the end of the day, he is her husband.
i mean, Percy himself turned to Anthony for help to get her away. hell, he called him Anthony no Lord Bridgerton or formalities whatsoever. idk about you but i don’t think Percy would’ve done that and dropped his pride or that boundary so so sooo quickly if Cherie’s safety wasn’t a concern. and if what they say that Cherie truly had Cassie’s temper, i’m sure Percy would’ve been the one person who at least had an idea how to deal with it. bc i’m sure he’s seen it before, multiples times at least and have probably been the receiving end of it. and i’m sure, after everything that happened, he’s spent years contemplating on what the better ways he could’ve gone about it every time he and Cassie got into an argument.
and oh my god wait, i just realized something too. in between Anthony’s nightmares, and then him saying earlier in the chapter about her not to joke about dying. i can only imagine that that flashed before Anthony’s eyes for split second. i mean, him saying about her getting hanged if she murdered someone. but what if, what if, Fuckwad™️ manages to get the upper hand? what would happen if he hurt Cherie badly? played it off as an act of defense? with how fucking insane and vile this man is, i honestly do not doubt him going that far, in midst of his anger AND hatred for Cherie, do we really think he’s above hurting her? Anthony is already so so scared to lose Cherie to something completely out of his control, and even then, he will stillblame himself for it. what more if it was something he could’ve stopped? especially if he was right therei mean, he was sitting right beside her.
not to mention, they’re not the only ones in the room. and i’m not talking about the staff and everything and gossip and what not. i’m talking about the safety. we’ve got to remember, Cece is pregnant here. not only will it cause stress and shock, but what if in midst of the chaos if Anthony hadn’t stopped Cherie, the table topples over Cece by accident? or she gets hit by something, like some glass breaks, or other cutlery gets in the way? what if it’ll end up hurting someone else? Aunt Lavinia, Iona, someone could’ve gotten hurt in the middle of it. what if Anthony’s reflexes hadn’t been great, miscalculated it and instead of stopping Cherie from lunging at Fuckwad™️, he ends up getting hurt himself while he tries to stop her? what if that knife had hit him instead? what would Cherie feel after the dust settles and she sees what she’s done?
so Anthony dragging her out of the room, i honestly can’t see a better way he could’ve done or approached that. desperate times, desperate measures. he had to think quick or else it would’ve been so so soo much worse.
i’m honestly not one for taking sides bc both had a few lapses in their judgement and i see where both of them are coming from but, i will say, Cherie was more blinded than Anthony. bc the difference is that, Anthony really didn’t have much of a choice and acted accordingly especially with how fast everything happened. whereas Cherie, especially her words, is being run by intense emotions and being clouded with said emotions after the case when they’d already reached the backyard.
and honestly, yeah, Anthony could have given her comfort, but with how angry she was, i’m afraid she’ll probably take it the wrong way. and boy, if he told her to calm down i swear that would’ve been a bad choice too. i honestly can’t see any other way Anthony could’ve done. maybe he could’ve been gentler and tried to sweet talk her to calm her down and provided comfort but with how stubborn and angry Cherie was? i doubt that would’ve worked either. idk. i think she needs a reminder that Anthony isn’t against her here. he’s on her side and he will always be on her side. he didn’t stop her for some selfish reason, he did it for her, and her safety and her sanity bc i honestly can’t imagine what it would do to her once all that anger dies down and the adrenaline has fizzled and all she’ll see is the blood on her hands.
honestly, i’m so glad Elias was at least calm about this, the best he way he could. i mean, we’ve seen it before when Cherie got angry at him few chapters back, he really isn’t one to blow up. kinda like how Percy is in this situation too. it’s like they’re father and son huh LMAO. but no, i’m glad bc not only will it make it worse if he had a temper, Cece would’ve been so so concerned and stressed and i’m pretty sure that’s not good for the baby. i’m sure that crossed Elias’ mind too.
goooood, i know the next chapter is going to be just as intense. especially since since this is their first big fight. but i’m sure they’ll work through it. they just need to, come on say it with me, Communicate™️ but aaah we’re closer to the end, and i know it’s going to be bittersweet but i can’t wait for the next one! this was intense but i loved it nonetheless.
– TM Anon™️
TM ANON OH MY GOD-
Honey I want to print this analysis out and pin it on my wall THIS IS AMAZING AND YOU’RE AMAZING AND I’M TOTALLY FANGIRLING OVER YOU❤🥰
AAAAAAA I’M SO EXCITED-
I didn’t think anyone ever read the title names, this took me by surprise in such a lovely way! ❤
Anthony definitely has those nightmares where she dies 💔 He has them very often! 💔
Lolll I feel like Cherie and Elias are somehow similar when they’re hungover, they’re both extremely grumpy and dramatic 😂 And Anthony has some experience with that, because of Elias 😂
“Remind me again why we’re doing this?” meanwhile in the other house, Percy is already complaining why they invited Anthony too when it should have been fine if it was just Cherie LMAO. Ooooh I love this mental image so much! 😂 And that is so true, Percy was no doubt complaining about how they didn’t need to invite Anthony, and how Cherie didn’t have to bring him with her 😂 Meanwhile Lavinia was facepalming and reminding him that Cherie and Anthony are married 😂
Kenneth pretends to be above all the drama but he deep down loves it, that’s why he messes with Anthony right in front of Percy and Elias 😂 And Anthony and Cherie are so going to remind Elias that he’s essentially the reason why they’re together now 😂 If it weren’t for him, I doubt they would have met or get that close ❤
Cece knoooows 😏❤ She totally knows and she talked to Hugh about Ken already❤
Oh Benedict probably rolled his eyes like millions of times whenever Anthony was in the same room with Cherie before they got together because Anthony is not subtle at allll😈
i’m pretty sure in that era, that F-bomb is more than just a bomb, it’s more a nuclear explosion especially when it’s Cherie saying that lmao. EXACTLY!
Cursing in public was a big no no, like especially in front of ladies, and a lady wasn’t even supposed to know that word let alone use it like that 😂 It flew over Iona and Cece’s heads but all the men at the table were SHOCKED 😂
She is directing her anger at the wrong direction, I agree! ❤ And that will lead to some real tense moments, because as you said, Anthony is patient but he has his own temper and stubbornness 😈
They need to work on their communication! ❤
in a way, yeah, i understand why Cherie saw it that way but honestly, what was Anthony supposed to do? i feel like either choice he made, he’d lose. it’s another case of choosing the lesser evil, which in this case had been obvious enough and actually has a VERY big difference in consequences. I agree with this so much! ❤ He did what was right, and even if Cherie can’t see that right at that second, things could’ve gone so much worse than a lover’s quarrel in the backyard if Anthony didn’t do what he did ❤
i mean, Percy himself turned to Anthony for help to get her away. hell, he called him Anthony no Lord Bridgerton or formalities whatsoever. idk about you but i don’t think Percy would've done that and dropped his pride or that boundary so so sooo quickly if Cherie’s safety wasn’t a concern.
I AM SCREAMING-
You noticed that tiny detail! 😱😍 Omg you expressed it in a much better way than I could, yesssss! Both Percy and Anthony could see things in a very clear way the moment she lunged for the knife and Anthony pulled her back, and this first priorities were;
1)    Get Cherie out
2)    Keep her safe and away from there
And that could only happen if Anthony got her out of that room! And Percy knew he could trust Anthony with Cherie’s safety, no matter how “annoyed” he pretends to be by him, Anthony is the one person who Percy trusts completely with Cherie ❤
and if what they say that Cherie truly had Cassie’s temper, i’m sure Percy would’ve been the one person who at least had an idea how to deal with it. bc i’m sure he’s seen it before, multiples times at least and have probably been the receiving end of it. YESSSS!
Percy has seen it before for sure, with Cassie! And considering Cherie’s temper is like a reflection of Cassie’s, he knew the best bet was to get her out and give her time to calm down ❤
in between Anthony’s nightmares, and then him saying earlier in the chapter about her not to joke about dying. i can only imagine that that flashed before Anthony’s eyes for split second. i mean, him saying about her getting hanged if she murdered someone. but what if, what if, Fuckwad™️ manages to get the upper hand? what would happen if he hurt Cherie badly? played it off as an act of defense?
Ooooh this is a genius idea, I haven’t thought about this before BUT IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE! 😍 Like, Anthony already had nightmares about her dying when everything was going absolutely great, and now that there’s an actual danger of that happening? It probably did flash before his eyes! ❤
Yessss, her trying to attack Frederick was already incredibly dangerous for her own well being but also for the others as well! ❤ Like, for example Elias wanted to attack him too, I’m sure he did, but one touch from Cece was enough to make him remember that protecting Cece (and his family) was above taking revenge right there and then ❤ It could’ve gone so badly, thankfully it didn’t! ❤
so Anthony dragging her out of the room, i honestly can’t see a better way he could’ve done or approached that. desperate times, desperate measures. he had to think quick or else it would’ve been so so soo much worse. THIS IS SO TRUE!
That was the right call on his part, for everyone in that room❤
and honestly, yeah, Anthony could have given her comfort, but with how angry she was, i’m afraid she’ll probably take it the wrong way. and boy, if he told her to calm down i swear that would’ve been a bad choice too. i honestly can’t see any other way Anthony could’ve done. maybe he could’ve been gentler and tried to sweet talk her to calm her down and provided comfort but with how stubborn and angry Cherie was? i doubt that would’ve worked either
Exactly, and the way Anthony sees it, making sure she’s physically alright was the first priority there! Like, in his perspective, calming her down could wait until he was sure she was unharmed, or that she wouldn’t do anything that could possibly lead to her getting harmed❤ He was being pretty logical about the situation, and that’s also why they clashed that badly because Cherie is led by her emotions at that point while Anthony is using his logic❤ That fight was inevitable, because not only do they not understand each other, they also didn’t listen to each other❤
i think she needs a reminder that Anthony isn’t against her here. he’s on her side and he will always be on her side. This is a great point! ❤ Anthony and Cherie are in love but they still aren’t used to “working as a team” yet, and that will be something they’re going to have to learn in the next chapters, and it will improve their relationship for so much better ❤
Elias and Cherie are absolute opposites when it comes to expressing their anger 😁 Elias took after Percy on that, while Cherie took after Cassie🥰
Oh I have loooots of ideas for the next chapter and I’m so excited! I hope you’ll like it! ❤
DARLIIING THIS WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I love your analyses so much, and it makes me see the chapter from such a different and new perspective, I can’t thank you enough for this! ❤❤ Love you! ❤❤❤

Hey!:) Do you have any hc for eros!Percy?
I LOVE EROS!PERCY
- okay so i personally love the og myth of eros being a primordial god rather than the son of aphrodite & mars so that’s what i’m gonna do and NO hoo eros bc that was not it....... idk what rr did there for real but anyways
- percy as a son of eros would essentially be my lifeline due to the fact that he is insanely beautiful while being very competent in combat while having high intelligence & extreme power bc being the son of a primordial god is PEAK
- at camp he used to be in the hermes cabin but everyone was confused bc come on...... he BELONGS in the aphrodite cabin but there’s something different about him - almost otherworldly & somewhat ancient but then you see him wearing bright blue crocs and jorts and you’re like no. this king is from the Modern Era (say that how justin mcelroy would say it)
- but then ofc the whole war against titans happens and he gets officially claimed by eros and everything kinda falls into place - and as a child of eros here’s some of his powers:
- he can radiate beauty and stop his enemies from fighting him even while he charges them head on (yes that’s real it’s michael kahale’s power)
- he has amokinesis meaning he can control emotions of love & desire but he never uses it bc he doesn’t wanna make someone be w someone they don’t wanna be w
- however something a son of eros CAN do is manipulate effortlessly - using your beauty and your intellect to gain information? sneak around and get let off because you use your powers & leave everyone in a cloudy haze? yeah that’s iconic and he DOES do that during fights & in his day to day when someone is being a dick to him or his friends
- i imagine a black widow type-esque vibe but better knddjdn like super beautiful but insanely powerful & intelligent! my brown king can do scissor kicks and choke bad guys out w his thighs and he’s valid and i will support him
- he has mastered the skill of archery and often trains w the sons of apollo (a hunter group similar to the hunters of artemis) & he joins their group and gets through the ranks to have a more higher/powerful position
- now i love the idea of percy being someone people can go to when they need help - he helps people w their family/friend issues, he helps people find self love, he gives relationship advice & friendship advice - he’s just someone everyone trusts & admires! and it helps to look at a pretty face hehe
- one time on valentine’s day he wore a white shirt w the word “LOVER” printed in red with red rimmed heart shaped sun glasses and blue jeans w heart patterned white vans while he’s sucking on a strawberry flavored heart shaped lollipop and a huge smile/smirk on his face and you know what - he absolutely KILLED it! he gives everyone roses and compliments and this is an excuse for him & the camp to eat a plethora of candy <3 it’s a day where he can enjoy being a son of eros while making EVERYONE’S day brighter :’)

Ive made a thing..
So it starts off with Lore Olympus, Hades and Persephone fall in love and rule together, persephone leaving for spring
They come to a point where all they wish for is a child, yet cannot have one, hades being god of the dead (or whatever, like in the old hymns)
They wish for one so much, they make a well coveted in precious stones, every day wishing.
Their wishes so strong, form a child who emerges swaddled in sands of silk, her coppery baby hair, golden eyes and silver skin,
They are happy, teaching her all of the stories of the world.
Naming her Remanie,
an observer, a remnant, a storyteller, child of memories.
Demeter, who has always been angry at hades, is fuelled by disgust at his child and steals her away.
She hides her in the mortal world, far away from greece in the deep mountains and ocean shore where a people were living, she didnt want the child to suffer as persephone was still her daughter, so she gave the child to the people, taken in by a widowed man and his sister
The child was 9 years old, but quickly learned the language and found happiness and love, but then the invaders came, heard of a girl who was cherished by all for she brought wonderful fruits and medicines.
They tried to steal her away back to the old world along with many other children from the people.
In her anguish and ferocity she turned the whole ship into a large mass of wrangled trees and stone, sinking to the botton, deep where even Poseidon could not detect her.
She sank so deep, if she were mortal she would have died but instead was put to a deep trancelike sleep.
Hades and persephone mourned their daughter, pain turned to anger, all the gods could not find her and demeter feared for them to find out the truth, she went back to find the girl but the people had gone, moved west, and believed remenie to be lost forever.
This brings us to the industrial revolution/hadestown, persephone and hades grew cold and angry at eachother.
"Wait for me, im coming with you"
The story of Orpheus and Euridice spread through the ages by the people,
Persephone and Hades began rekindling what they once had and ruled together again but it was still with glimmers of resentment and pain.
In the heroes of olympus/percy jackson era, when the children of hades were hateful towards the children of the other gods, causeing the world wars and battles, the great prophecy saying the child of the big three would be the rise or fall of olympus. The three gods swore off having half-blood children, yet nico was still alive in modern time. In his shadow travels he could hear the song.
"Lah la la lah la lahhh"
Once a ballad of hades and persephones love for eachother.
He continues to hear this song, in his fathers voice, and then in Orpheus' eloquent voice of love and loss.
He can't figure out why he keeps hearing it
"King of shadows, king of shades.."
A new prophecy,
Swallowed to the sea below
Spring and deaths child of hopes
Will unite the world to equals at last
bringing life or death by a childs hand
Child of death and one of the Sea
Will find her and bring her back to thee
(Or somethin idk how to write prophesies dont judge)
Nico and Percy unite (between the last olympian and the lost hero)
They only know to look through the sea and stop on a coast, exhausted after battling monsters and are taken in by a small family, they ask of stories of a lost child, they recount a story of all the children who'd been taken for centuries
Nico dreams of her in the dark, begins calling to her and she begins to stir
As they continue on their quest they realize they must go to the deep where oceanus once ran the seas, and find her, bringing her back to the king and queen of the underworld.
She helps in the fight against gaia....
Thats all I got rn but whatd you think?

A (not) quick rundown of the grayscaleverse
please know that this is very early in the development of this multiverse, so many things can have changed.
Ink was a Sans born in the ANTI-VOID, to become the Creator and give life to the multiverse, but due to his memory problems, does not remember that, or the balance. He does not control which AUs he creates.
Error was the original Aftertale Sans, but then manages to get stuck into the ANTI-VOID, yada yada, he’s the Destroyer, that has to make sure the multiverse does not get too full.
Dream is Ink’s greatest ally, and spreads positivity to the multiverse, often getting sick by forgetting to take care of himself.
Nightmare is the Dark Sanses dad figure, he works hard to keep the balance between negativity and positivity.
FRESH is not Fresh. YES, there are two of them. FRESH is the unfeeling virus that keeps harassing Error, and Fresh is the Dark Sanses cinnamon roll.
[Members of the Dark Sanses/Nightmare’s Gang:
Killer: first recruit, is the only one in the gang to have witnessed Nightmare’s apathetic era. Big bro team.
Horror: second recruit, cooks like a professional, DON’T YOU DARE WASTE FOOD.
Sugar: came with Horror, his older brother. Cinnamon roll, does not go on raids or even FIGHT at all.
Windigo: the Horrortale brothers’ human that they spared. Had to resort to cannibalism to survive her AU. Goes on raids sometimes.
Dust: third recruit, figured out a way to stay stable despite his growing DETERMINATION. Does not see Papirus’ ghost anymore.
Cross: Fourth recruit, still is being possessed by X, but they don’t fight anymore.
X: the Chara possessing Cross, they like to help the Gang to cause havoc.
Fresh: cinnamon roll, no cursing.]
Error and Nightmare + Dark Sanses don’t trust each other. They would FIGHT on the same side, but Nightmare + Dark Sanses are not aware of the balance, and Error just has trust issues in general.
Ink is not aware of the balance, while Dream isn’t either but sits in a throne  of denial concerning his brother.
As for the hunstmen crew, i already told the story of underblizzard, but basically, there is an OP Sans sharing a body most of the time with 6 human children that decided to recruit a bunch of morally gray, also OP Sanses to kill his sworn enemy efore they enslave the entire multiverse via complicated SOUL stuff. They were all adopted by Error at some point, and always listen to him.
 [Members of the Huntsmen crew:
Snowflake: see above
Ira: Snowflake’s friend and first recruit, actually takes the role of leader most of the time but always listens to Snowflake. Has PTSD as well as a SOUL illness, courtesy of their AU.
Luxu: decided to join after their AU was destroyed by Dustlins. Their AU had been the original Dancelust.
Ava: joined to escape their overprotective and somewhat toxic brother.]
The Pixelation Team are people that are aware of the balance, but are unable/unwilling to abandon their current lives in order to serve their cause full time, so take on a double life, slaughtering AUs at night, ”helping” the star sanses at day(the time actually varies, but anyways).
[Members of the pixelation team: (Star persona/Dark persona) (the first two i got from the blood moon series on AO3)
Blueberry/Bluescreen: has been helping Error since being released from his kidnapping. Also killing off residents of AUs that are about to touch, when Error is unable to destroy, so that their deaths are less painful.
Honey/Blood Moon: was shown by his brother and Error what happens when AUs touch shortly after discovering that they were keeping in contact. Has been in the Team ever since.
Lust/Heartbreak: became friends with Error after the latter came to his AU in accident in the middle of a panic attack, then kept coming. It was easy to join after years of being written off as simply “the whore“.
Stargazer/Meteor: from Outertale 88, started to talk to Error after he began coming there to watch the stars since Ink always came when he was in the original Outertale. Keeps the visits to his AU a secret from the light sanses, and said AU is considered a safe heaven to the Glitch Family. He does not go to other AUs to kill, but to heal the ones he can help.]
The Underperspective AU is a forgotten original, located far away from the other AUs. Is a safe, neutral ground were everyone is nice and there is no human child. Often gets visits from the rest of the Glitch Family.
[Underperspective:
Just/Justice(Sans): is super nice and prefers not to judge people, hates prejudice, and is basically anything a Sans is NOT exept for the love for karma.
Kar/Karma(Chara), Percy/Perserverance(Asriel) & Sea/Synthesia(Papyrus): cinnamon rolls, protect them. Also, Sea has synthesia, the type that makes him see colorful shapes when he hears something.]
The Glitch Children are the children that Error adopted and raised(fun fact: they all call him mama). Are all connected to the ANTI-VOID in some way.
[Cycle: oldest, is protective and mature, always working with her mama to keep the Glitch Family a secret from the Multiverse.
Vanishment/Vanny: second oldest, is super shy and kind.
Corruption: is the second youngest but calls Vanny his little sister and she calls him her big brother. Is a watered down fusion of FRESH and Fresh + a protective streak.
Widow/Princess: youngest of all, a cinnamon roll that acts surprisingly mature sometimes.]
The Glitch Family is actually just the Huntsmen Crew, Pixelation Team, Glitch Children, the entire Underperspective AU and Error, who managed to somehow adopt them all and without even noticing, they were soon a very large family united by the sole principle of protecting their mother figure(and a lot of love, but that came later).
The Grayscaleverse focuses on the glitch family the most, with the Dark Sanses in second place, and the fact i did not even bother to list the Star Sanses reveals just how much i care about them(just trow every single biased Judge from all the original AUs together). But it is important to note that all the four Gods/Guardians have issues.

The Weekend Warrior Home Edition June 12, 2020 – THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND, DA 5 BLOODS, ARTEMIS FOWL, YOU DON’T NOMI and more!
Sorry about the delay in this week’s column. Some stuff came up that was out of my control… like the actual summer.
Tumblr media
If this were a normal weekend, I’d be writing about the box office prospects about a few movies, including Judd Apatow’s new comedy THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND (Universal), which teams him with “Saturday Night Live’s” enfant terrible, Pete Davidson. Instead, I’m once again writing about movies mostly not playing in theaters except for a few sporadic drive-ins across the country.
I already reviewed The King of Staten Island earlier this week – you can read that here – and though I know it will be playing in some regional drive-ins, I have no idea how many nor do I think Universal will report any box office if it does make decent bank. I think there will be general interest among younger people who like Pete Davidson on SNL but I’m not sure anyone over a certain age, say 30 or 40, will have much interest in what Davidson and Apatow can do together. The general gist of the movie is that Davidson plays Scott, a Staten Island slacker whose widowed mother (Marisa Tomei) starts dating a fireman, much to the chagrin of Scott, who lost his fireman father at an early age. You can read my review to see what I think, but it’s relatively tame for Apatow compared to his earlier films. I’m not sure that makes it necessarily better but people seem to be digging it.
Tumblr media
One of my favorite movies from last year’s Tribeca and what is essentially this week’s “Featured Film” is Jeffrey McHale’s YOU DON’T NOMI (RLJE Films), which takes an in-depth look at Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 movie Showgirls, thought to be one of the worst movies and biggest bombs in its day but also a movie that has grown a built-in cult audience that adores it. It’s a pretty straight-ahead doc that relies on a number of experts to discuss the problems and virtues of Verhoeven’s film, including David Schmader, who did the DVD commentary for Showgirls, and author Adam Nayman, who is responsible for the book, “It Doesn’t Suck: Showgirls.” While I never fell into either the love it or hate it camp for Showgirls, I love how McHale’s doc acts as a thesis piece to explain exactly why so many critics took issue with Verhoeven’s much-maligned follow-up to hits Basic Instinct and Total Recall.
I won’t spoil the movie’s climax showing Showgirls finally achieving redemption, but it’s a pretty amazing event from 2015 that shows that maybe Showgirls has gotten past the hatred and ridicule that followed it around for decades. If nothing else, You Don’t Nomi will make you want to rent and watch (or rewatch) Showgirls almost immediately after seeing it. You might even agree with this film that it’s a misunderstood masterpiece on second viewing.
I’ve also decided to scrap the sections in this column, since two of the other big movie releases this week are going straight to streaming services, although both would probably have gotten some sort of theatrical release if not for COVID.

One of the other major releases of the weekend is Netflix’s streaming of Spike Lee’s DA FIVE BLOODS, his look at the Vietnam War through the eyes of four black Army vets who return to the country to retrieve the body of their fallen comrade… as well as a cache of gold bullion they found and hid during their previous tour.
I’ll be the first to admit that the quality of Spike Lee’s filmmaking over the past couple of decades has been somewhat spotty at best, although BlacckKKlansman was probably one of his better films over the past couple decades. Da Five Bloods reunites Lee with his BlackkKlansman co-writer, Kevin Willmot, and though it’s a fictitious tale, there are a few themes and elements in common.
Delroy Lindo and Lee regular Isiah Whitlock Jr. star as two of the Bloods, Paul and Melvin (along with Clarke Peters’ Otis and Norm Lewis’ Eddie). We meet them as they’re reunited in Vietnam, soon joined by Paul’s son David (Jonathan Majors) along to keep an eye on his father’s health. Chadwick Boseman plays the group’s leader, “Stormin’ Norman,” in the flashback sequence to the war era showing what happened to the Bloods on the fateful day their chopper went down behind enemy lines. There are a few satellite characters, played by Mélanie Thierry and Paul Walter Hauser (making a return from BlackKklansman), as well as Jean Reno, Jasper Pääkkönen and Johnny Trí Nguyễn, who all become involved in the Bloods’ search for gold
When you think of Vietnam War movies, it’s impossible not to think of Apocalypse Now, and Lee throws in a few obvious nods, whether it’s using “Flight of the Valkyrie” or the Chamber Brothers’ “Time Has Come to Day” but in general, the musical choices are solid. I wouldn’t say that the screenplay is particularly enlightening, the story being far more simple than
Just when you have settled into what you think is a fairly laid-back pace, Lee throws a “Holy shit!” moment at you that completely changes the complexion of what you’ve been watching, and that’s when the movie starts breaking into a few more action setpieces, some better than others.
Honestly, it’s a little strange seeing all these old black guys running around and shooting guns without Samuel Jackson being among them. Make no mistake that this is first and foremost Delroy Lindo’s film, as he gives a strong if not somewhat erratic performance, and he’s the crux of the story, but Whitlock and the other actors have some nice moments, as well. The bonding between the four guys is pervasive, to the point where it almost feels like the other characters are interfering, maybe because they are.
It’s a great time to release Da 5 Bloods, due to what is going on in this country, and like with BlackKklansman, Lee throws in a few shots at Trump, the guys referring to him as “President Fake Bone Spurs.” At least in this case, it’s incorporated into the story, but I hope Lee realizes that these Trump references will ensure these movies will feel dated if watched ten or twelve years from now.
That all said, Da 5 Bloods is a decent Spike Lee Joint, maybe not quite on par with BlackkKlansman but better than his last attempt at a war movie, 2008’s Miracle at St. Anna.

As expected by quite a few people earlier during this pandemic, Walt Disney Pictures decided to send the Kenneth Branagh-directed ARTEMIS FOWL movie directly to their Disney+ streaming service, despite the movie having been in various stages of development for a decade or more. Unlike Da 5 Bloods and The King of New York, this movie based on Eoin Colfer’s book series, is far more streamlined with a kid-friendly running time of 95 minutes. Phew!
It centers around 12-year-old super-genius Artemis Fowl (Ferdia Shaw) whose father (also named Artemis Fowl and played by Colin Farrell) goes missing, forcing the young “Artie” to look for a powerful mystical device called the Aculos. Joining him on this quest are his non-butler Domovoi (Nonzo Anonsie), Dom’s daughter Juliet (Tamara Smart), an elven police officer named Holly Short (Lara McDonnell) and an oversized dwarf played by a bearded Josh Gad. Oh, yeah, and in this world, fairies, trolls and dwarves are real, but most humans don’t know about their existence due to their secrecy as well as having a way to erase humans’ memories ala Men in Black.
I’m quite sure the latter will be a qualifying benchmark for those who review the movie without having read any of Colfer’s fantasy series – like myself -- but it takes similar ideas as David Ayer’s Bright and the Amazon series Carnival Row and transforms them into something that attempts to be in the vein of Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts but maybe comes across more like Percy Jackson. The irony is that Chris Columbus directed the initial chapters of both Potter and Jackson, but Artemis Fowl benefits from having Branagh at the helm.
I will freely admit that I’m very much a bonafide Branagh stan, and much of that is due to the way he’s handled bringing fantasy worlds to life in movies like Thor and Cinderella. Artemis Fowl is right up his alley, and he does an exemplary job even if most of his cast other than Gad… oh, yeah, and Dame Judi Dench, who plays the head of the “fairy police” – are fairly inexperienced. You can kind of tell that’s the case with first-timer Shaw, and his inexperience might be one of the tougher things for which older viewers might have to contend. Younger viewers won’t take issue with any of the problems that might throw off those expecting more from Artemis Fowl, because the storytelling is kept at a fairly brisk pace with a few decent action setpieces.
Artemis Fowl could have been released theatrically and been one of the summer’s sadly forgotten films. It finds a fun way of setting up the characters and ideas – presumably most of them taken directly from Colfer’s book – plus it sets up the possibility for even more fun family-friendly fantasy storytelling.

There are a few other movies below I was hoping to get to, but see my note at the top of this column about why it was delayed by a day. If I get to any of the ones below, I’ll update and mention on social media.
One of the movies delayed from March but now getting a digital release is Carl Hunter’s drama SOMETIMES ALWAYS NEVER (Blue Fox Entertainment) -- not to be confused with Never Rarely Sometimes Always with the two movies at one point in danger of coming out on the same weekend!  It stars Bill Nighy as tailor Alan, who has been searching for years for his missing son Michael, who stormed out after a Scrabble Game. When a body turns up, Alan must try to work things out with his younger son Peter, played by Sam Riley, and an online player they think could be Michael.
Jonas Alexander Arnby’s Danish film EXIT PLAN (Screen Media) stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones playing insurance claims investigator Max, who follows the clues of a death to the remote Hotel Aurora, a facility that specializes in assisted suicide, uncovering some disturbing revelations in the bargain.
Joshua Caldwell’s  INFAMOUS (Vertical Entertainment), which will be available via VOD and in select Virtual Cinemas, stars Bella Thorne as Arielle, a down-on-her-luck dreamer seeking popularity who runs into Jake Manley’s Dean, an ex-con working for his abusive father who dies in an accident sending the two of them on the run.
The dance drama, Aviva (Outsider Pictures/Strand Releasing), directed by Boaz Yakin (Remember the Titans, Max), was supposed to premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March, but it will instead get its premiere through Virtual Cinema this Friday. It’s a love story that explores gender dynamics with dance sequences choreographed by Bobbi Jene Smith of the Batsheva Dance Company. Aviva is a young Parisian who gets into an online romance with a New Yorker named Eden, eventually meeting and getting married with the story told by four different dancers/actors simultaneously.
I haven’t had a chance to watch Flavio Alves’ The Garden Left Behind, starring Michael Madsen and Ed Asner, but it was a winner of the Audience Award at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival, so I’m definitely interested in learning more about its story of a young trans woman from Mexico who lives with her grandmother as undocumented immigrants in New York City.
Released in a union between Shudder and RLJE Films, The Dead Lands (Shudder/RLJE Films) hit Digital HD yesterday.  The supernatural fantasy set in New Zealand is co-directed by Peter Meteherangi Tikao Burger and Michael Hurst, and it stars Te Kohe Tuhaka as Waka, a murdered Maori warrior who has returned from the Afterlife who goes on a quest with with a young woman named Mehe (Darneen Christian) to discover who broke the world. Not quite sure why didn’t get to this one, as I’m usually interested in New Zealand-based films as well as supernatural fantasy.
Daniel (For the Bible Tells Me So) Karslake’s new doc For They Know Not What They Do (First Run Features), which will hit virtual cinemas this Friday, which looks at the intersection between religion, sexual orientation and gender identity in America through a number of families of faith learning to accept their LGBTQ children. It has pretty much run the festival circuit through most of last year, winning a number of audience awards.
Coming to the Film Forum’s Virtual Cinema this Friday is Bill Duke’s 1985 directorial debut The Killing Floor and Alastair Sim’s 1954 schoolgirl romp, The Belles of St. Trinian’s. Uptown at Film at Lincoln Center, besides the Human Rights Watch Film Festival (see below), they’ll be debuting Hong Sangsoo’s 2014 film Hill of Freedom (Grasshopper Films) in their already quite robust Virtual Cinema.
A few other films I wasn’t able to get to this week, include Return to Hardwick (Gravitas Ventures) and The Departure  (October Coast), so I guess I did better than last week?
A few film festivals taking place mostly virtually this week include the annual New York edition of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival, running from June 11 through 20, and the Fine Arts Film Festival in Venice, California (June 8 to 14). The latter is offering 92 films from 27 countries with different packages including the entire festival for $20 or individual series for $10. Also, the Oxford Film Festival continues its virtual festival with two music docs, Dillon Hayes’ short All I Have to Offer You is Me about country-Western singer Larry Callies, as he tries to get his voice back after a degenerative disorder, and Dennis Cahlo’s feature In Flowers Through Space, in which the filmmaker tries to use the Fibonacci Sequence to try to create a unique music album. You can also check out Ben  & Bo Powell’s Mississippi doc Nothin’ No Better about Rosedale, Mississippi, and more short blocks, all available on Oxford’s Virtual Site.
Also, the June episode of Hulu’s horror series “Into the Dark” is Good Boy, a movie directed by Tyler MacIntyre, starring Judy Greer, Steve Guttenberg and Ellen Wong (from Scott Pilgrim!) that has Greer adopting an emotional support dog that kills anyone who causes her anxiety. Just in time for Pet Appreciation Week! Yeah, I’m gonna have to see this one.
Next week, more movies (mostly) not in theaters!
By the way, if you read this week’s column and have bothered to read this far down, feel free to drop me some thoughts at Edward dot Douglas at Gmail dot Com or drop me a note or tweet on Twitter. I love hearing from readers … honestly, I do!

Spotlight on... the 11th Earl and Countess of Northumberland
In this new series of posts, we will look at a few details from the lives of members of the Percy family who were part of Alnwick Castle's history.
First up are Josceline Percy, 11th Earl of Northumberland, and his countess Elizabeth (also known as Betty).
Tumblr media
Josceline Percy, 11th Earl of Northumberland (1644-1670)
Josceline, born in 1644, was the subject of a large commitment by his father, the 10th Earl, to his training and education, in order to make Josceline “a citizen to his country”. The 10th Earl also negotiated a marriage for his son, to a lady named Audry Wriothesley who he “judged... to be of a Nature, Temper and Humour likely to have made him an excellent wife, which would have brought me much comfort in the latter part of my life”.
The 10th Earl’s use of “would” above is due to the fact that Audry died before the marriage could take place. Her sister Elizabeth, or Betty, would instead be selected as Josceline’s wife.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHO WERE AUDRY AND BETTY WRIOTHESLEY?
The Wriothesley sisters were daughters of the 4th Earl of Southampton. Southampton’s father, the 3rd Earl, was the famous Wriothesley who patronised William Shakespeare, and to whom two of Shakespeare’s longer poems are dedicated (the only known occasions when Shakespeare directly wrote as himself).
Betty would also stand to inherit an annual sum of £5000 from her grandfather the Earl of Chichester.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Josceline appeared to be ill quite frequently. One letter he wrote to his tutor, Dr Mapletoft, states "I believe that few persons have suffered more in diseases without dying than I have done. I did not stir one inch from the place I was in for 22 days, being kept first 14 or 15 by the smallpox, and then by a fever  which was, in my opinion, much the worse of the two."
Four months later, another letter mentions “a very high fever, which afterwards proved to be the scarlet fever”. Though Josceline died in his late twenties, he seems to have been lucky to have survived as long as that!
He seems to have had some level of self-awareness, too. An additional letter to Mapletoft has Josceline declaring “I hear so little of truth from anybody, that I am the last man that learns of anything amiss concerning myself”.
Betty was known for her beauty - Samuel Pepys described her in his Diary as “a beautiful lady indeed!” - but her marriage to Josceline was delayed due to his repeated illnesses. The marriage took place on the 23rd December, 1662: Josceline was in his late teens, and Betty was a couple of years his junior.
Their first child was born in 1666, which must have been a relief to the 10th Earl, who was apparently becoming concerned at the absence of an heir to continue the Percy family line. However, the child was a daughter, Elizabeth, and the couple only received a ‘grudging congratulation’ from the Earl. In 1668, very shortly before the Earl’s death, a son was born, and the continuation of the earldom was assured. Unfortunately, the son died in infancy.
When the 10th Earl died, Josceline became 11th Earl of Northumberland, and Betty his Countess. He received many letters expressing condolences for his father’s death, including one from the future King James VII and II.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
WHAT DID JAMES WRITE?
In his letter to Josceline, the future King wrote:
“It will not be necessary for me to use many words to persuade you how sensibly I am touched with the loss you have made of your father, since you know so well the kindness that I have for your whole family... I do assure you you shall find the continuance of my kindness for you upon all occasions; and as I lost in him a very good friend, so I hope I shall find you as much so as he was, since you will always find me your most affectionate friend...”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The new Earl’s health did not improve, and when a second daughter died in 1670, he and the pregnant Betty decided to travel abroad, accompanied by their friend and physician, the learned philosopher John Locke.
Once they had reached Paris, Locke and the Countess remained - she was unable to conduct a long journey all at once - but the Earl continued to Rome. He was described as having “heated himself with travelling... for many days”, and by the time he reached Turin he had caught a fever which resulted in his death in his late twenties.
A few weeks after Josceline’s death, Betty gave birth to a stillborn child. Their only surviving daughter, three year old Elizabeth, inherited all the titles and lands that were transmissible to her as a female heir.

Elizabeth Percy, daughter of Josceline and Betty, later Duchess of Somerset
Betty, at the age of 25, was now a widow who had lost a husband, a son and a daughter within five months. She returned to England, but found herself under the imperious attention of her commanding mother-in-law, as well as romantic attentions from suitors - she was, after all, renowned for her great beauty, as well as her youth, high rank and wealth. She moved again, and began to live in Paris, but found suitors there too.
One of these suitors was William Seymour, 3rd Duke of Somerset, who died in 1671, aged 21, apparently “at grief for the unkindness” of Betty, “whom he had long courted in vain”. The most famous one, however, was the English Ambassador in Paris, Ralph, Lord Montagu.
The courtship of Montagu and Betty became a frequent subject of correspondence among the aristocratic ladies of France at the time, including Madame de Sevigne, now considered one of the most iconic letter-writers in French literature, and the author Madame de la Fayette, who jealously found the Countess badly-dressed and without any grace, and who wondered what Montagu saw in her! Men, however, found plenty to admire about Betty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DE LA FAYETTE? I KNOW THAT NAME...
The most famous Lafayette is probably the Marquis de Lafayette, who fought in the American Revolution and is currently a major character in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton. He is descended from the Madame de la Fayette who was so disparaging about the widow Betty Percy - but how?
Madame de la Fayette’s son, the marquis Rene-Armand, bequeathed the name and property of the House of Lafayette to his distant cousin Charles Motier de Champetieres in 1692 - Rene-Armand’s brother was an abbot, and he had no sons. However, his daughter Marie-Madeleine did inherit the Lafayette lands.
Charles’ son Edouard took the name of Lafayette, and it was Edouard’s son Jacques to whom Marie-Madeleine transmitted the Lafayette lands on her death in 1717. Jacques was her cousin, and was only aged 6 at the time. When Jacques died in January 1734, his brother Michel became the Marquis de Lafayette - and as Michel was born on 13th August 1731, he was only two years old at the time!
Finally, Michel’s son Gilbert du Motier became marquis on his father’s death, travelled to America, and became the Lafayette so involved with the revolutions across the world at the end of the 18th century.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Montagu, who later became Duke of Montagu, had a reputation of being irresistible, but Betty was not won over easily. It took Montagu some considerable time to court her, even refusing to do so much as look at other known beauties in case he offended her. Eventually, his attempts to woo her succeeded, and they married in autumn 1673.
However, as soon as the marriage was announced, Betty’s mother-in-law, the formidable Dowager Countess of Northumberland, claimed custody of her daughter Elizabeth citing a clause in Josceline’s will.
Betty, now Lady Montagu, protested, implored, and attempted to resist, but was not successful, and the Percy heiress was transferred from her mother to a much stricter guardian. The young Elizabeth had been in the care of her father’s old tutor, Dr Mapletoft, and Betty wrote to him, declaring:
“I desire that you would stay to come with her; for I shall not be at ease if you are not with her. And pray take care to defend her from her grandmother, who has not so much civility left as to come and speak to me herself; but by a letter has let me know that she does expect to have her delivered up; if not, she must use force. Poor child! Pray God send her health, and protect her from all the designs that are upon her at this time.”
Tumblr media
Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Wriothesley, Countess of Northumberland and later Duchess of Montagu
Though their time together was short, and Josceline’s life equally so, the 11th Earl and Countess of Northumberland are an essential part of Percy family and Alnwick Castle history. They can be seen as the end of one era, that of the earldom of Northumberland, and the beginning of another, where the Percy family line, and that of Alnwick Castle, would become more complicated and eventually culminate in the dukedom of Northumberland in 1766.
